Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) in agricultural crops likely create the worst possible images in the minds of various segments of our society today. To some there is only repulsion, which results in desire for total annihilation of Red-wings (by many agriculturists); while to others there is only attraction, which results in desire to leave the situation absolutely alone (by conservancy minded purists). The great middle ground includes those who vascillate back and forth, between these extremes, those who are not cognizant of the problems, and those that do not care. This has been changed by the passage of the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act (FEPCA). Now in certain cases you will find that EPA is working through the States under the FEPCA law to develop policy. You will find EPA and the amended FIFRA will play a very important role in your business for several years.

It has been known for centuries that light (photoperiod) is possibly the major environmental stimuli affecting bird behavior and physiology. The length of the light period stimulates the breeding cycle, migration, fat deposition, and molt in most species of birds. Therefore, it is only natural that one would think of using light as a means of bird control. In fact, light has already been used as a bird control; flood-light traps have been used to trap blackbirds (Meanley 1971); Meanley states that 2000-W search lights have been used to alleviate depredation by ducks in rice fields. This bibliography updates and expands the selected bibliography on Redwings prepared by Mealey and Mitchell in 1966. No effort was made to list the many progress and final reports on various aspects of blackbird research issued by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. Literature citations follow the Style used in The Journal of Wildlife Management.

I feel it would be interesting to examine another agricultural statistic to see whether the birds have had any influence on the agriculturists in Ohio with respect to what crops they plant. It is interesting to note that in 1960 we had about 3,383,000 acres of corn grown for grain in the state. That acreage has remained relatively constant. A low point was reached in 1969. The 1969 crop year here in Ohio was an extremely wet season; therefore there was difficulty in getting the crop planted in the spring of the year and difficulty getting the crop harvested in …

While human tinkering with the zoogeographical distribution of lower animals sometimes pays dividends, more often it opens up Pandora's box. Such is the case of the Weaver Finch family. This group of birds is characterized by its colonial habits, granivorous appetite which often counters man's best interests, and elaborate nest structures. The House Sparrow (passer domesticus) is a notable exception of the latter trait as its nests look like a Picasso interpretation of an Afro wig. Weaver Finches originated in Africa. Various N²-alkyl- and dialkylsubstituted 2’-deoxyguanosines have been synthesized. After future conversion into nucleotides, these compounds are to be used for incorporation into DNA. The modified DNA is expected to be useful in complexing studies with actinomycin. The presence of the 2-amino group in a purine has earlier been shown to be required for binding of actinomycin. Possible reasons for this requirement are an electronic effect or a precise steric fit involving hydrogen bonding. By comparing the relative stability of the complex formed between actinomycin and modified DNA versus actinomycin and normal DNA a better understanding of the mechanism …

A new general synthetic sequence and cyclization method was developed which utilizes parts of both the Reissert and Madelung indole cyclization methods and leads to substituted pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyridazines,pyrrolo[3,2-c]-pyridazines, and pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridazines. Thus, ethyl pyridazinylpyruvatel-oxides substituted with an ethyl formimidate or acetimidate group adjacent to the pyruvate group provides immediate precursors to pyrrolopyridazines. Mild acid hydrolysis of the acylimidate and subsequent cyclodehydration. Parallel to the latter stage of the Reissert indole cyclization method, affords ethyl pyrrolopyridazine carboxylates in high yields. On the other hand, treatment of the acylimidates with base provided ethyl pyrrolopyridazine glyxalates in high yields in a manner similar to the …

The Department of Fisheries and Fauna is responsible for the conservation of the native fauna in Western Australia. The main approach to this problem has been the creation of reserves for "The Conservation of Flora and Fauna". These reserves, known as "Wildlife Sanctuaries", are controlled by the Western Australian Wild Life Authority - a Statutory Authority serviced by the Department.

A mouse myeloma tumor was used as a model system to study the biochemical steps involved in the incorporation of mannose into glycoproteins. This tumor, MOPC-46B, synthesizes a K-type immunoglobulin light chain (K-46) which is a glycoprotein with a single oligosaccharide side chain containing mannose as one of its constituent sugars. MOPC-46B microsomal preparations contain enzymes which transfer mannose from the sugar nucleotide, GDPmannose, to endogenous lipid and protein acceptors. Formation of the mannolipid proceeds by the reversible transfer of mannose from GDP-mannose to an endogenous phospholipid. The mannolipid was purified and characterized by chemical methods and mass spectrometry as …

The synthetic analog approach has been applied to a clarification of the active sites of 2Fe-2S* proteins. The compound (Et₄N)₂[FeS(SCH₂)₂C₆H₄]₂, derived from o-xylyl-α,α′-dithiol, has been prepared and its structure has been determined by x-ray diffraction. The centrosymmetric anion contains two tetrahedrally coordinated ferric ions bridged by two sulfide ions and separated by 2.70 Å. Comparison of electronic, Mössbauer, and proton magnetic resonance spectra and magnetic susceptibility of the anion with the corresponding properties of the oxidized forms of the proteins reveals …

A variety of freshwater fishes were studied by light and electron microscopy, enzyme histochemical and biochemical methods, The objective was to determine normal structure and function in specific target organs and to compare these to altered states in aquatic pollution. The basic question, "can fish tissues and enzymes serve as indicators of water quality?," was asked. Microscopic alteration in gill was indicative of copper toxicity at an exposure of 20 parts per billion, Gross and light microscopic alterations were indicative of a single exposure of channel catfish to 15 parts per million of methyl mercuric chloride (CH₃HgCl). Germinating barley seeds have been shown to take up Bacillus subtilis DNA labelled with 5-bromouracil and tritiated thymidine and retain the DNA in the root system without substantially degrading it. The percentage of bacterial DNA recovered from the total root DNA was independent of the amount of bacterial DNA available for uptake. Four observations indicated the stability of bacterial DNA after uptake into barley roots: (1) the bacterial DNA retained its transforming ability after recovery from the roots; (2) the labelled B. subtilis DNA showed similar CsCl density gradient patterns before uptake and after uptake; (3) most of the radioactivity …

I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.
