Biological Effects Of Dredging In An Offshore Borrow Area, Robert O. Johnson, Walter G. Nelson
Biological Effects Of Dredging In An Offshore Borrow Area, Robert O. Johnson, Walter G. Nelson
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Changes in benthic fauna were monitored following excavation of an offshore borrow area in the vicinity of Fort Pierce Inlet, Florida. Sampling stations were established along 2 transects located in the borrow area, 1 control transect north of the borrow area, and 1 control transect south of the borrow area. Results suggest that relatively larger reductions in abundance, but not number of species, of the benthic fauna occurred in the borrow area following dredging as compared with the controls. Therefore the decrease observed appears greater than can be accounted for on the basis of seasonal changes alone. Both parameters returned …

Dissolved Oxygen Concentrations In Florida's Humic-Colored Waters And Water Quality Standard Implications, Thomas V. Belanger, Forrest E. Dierberg, Jerry Roberts
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
The Florida Department of Environmental Regulation has established detailed dissolved oxygen standards for the various classes of surface water in the state. The results of this study and a review of the literature reveal that many natural humic-colored aquatic systems (usually Class III waters) rarely meet the established 5 mg/L criteria. We believe, based on our studies, that these conditions are natural and do not result from organic pollution. In view of this, we believe a review of the current DER Standard, for humic-colored waters only, is in order.

Fisheries Report No 71 - An Investigation Of The Mortality Of The Pearl Oyster, Pinctada Maxima, In Western Australia, Rand Dybdahl, David A. Pass
Fisheries Research Reports
A three year investigation into the cause of abnormally high mortality rates of the pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima, on the cultured pearl industry's lease sites in the North West of Western Australia was completed on 30 June 71983. The objective of this study was to determine environmental, physiological and pathological factors predisposing farm oysters to excessive Levels of mortality and, if possible, make recommendations to alleviate this problem.
As mass mortalities may have complex causes, complementary field and laboratory studies were instigated. The culture industry's method of collection, transportation and farm husbandry were examined. Environmental parameters were monitored. Various empirical …

Translational Control By Adenovirus: Lack Of Virus-Associated Rna(I) During Adenovirus Infection Results In Phosphorylation Of Initiation Factor Eif-2 And Inhibition Of Protein Synthesis, John Siekierka, Thomas M. Mariano, Patricia Reichel, Michael B. Mathews
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
The dl331 mutant of adenovirus serotype 5 fails to produce virus-associated (VA) RNA(I), and cells infected with this mutant do not synthesize proteins efficiently at late times in infection. The translational defect occurs at the level of polypeptide chain initiation, and cell-free extracts prepared from dl331-infected cells exhibit the defect observed in vivo. Addition of either eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF-2) or guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) to these cell-free extracts restores translational activity, with GEF functioning more efficiently in this regard. These results suggest that cells infected with the dl331 mutant develop a translational block at the level of …

Microaerobic Conditions Are Required For Magnetite Formation Within Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum, R. P. Blakemore, K. A. Short, D. A. Bazylinski, Charles Rosenblatt, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
The amount of magnetite (Fe3O4) within magnetosomes of the microaerophilic bacterium Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum varies with oxygen and nitrogen supply. The development of optical methods for directly measuring cell magnetism in culture samples has enabled us to quantitate bacterial Fe3O4 yields. We measured final cell yields, average cell magnetic moments, and magnetosome yields of growing cells. Cultures were grown with NO3-, NH4+, or both, in sealed, unshaken vials with initial headspace Po2 values ranging from 0 (trace) to 21 kPa.
More than 50% of cells had detectable …

Morphological Clines In Reduced Areas. The Case Of Henrotius Jordai (Reitter), Cave-Dwelling Beetle From Majorca Island, Xavier Bellés
International Journal of Speleology
The present paper shows a statistically significant correlation between the geographical latitude and the morphological variation of the pronotum of Henrotius jordai (Reitter) (Col. Caraboidea), cave-dwelling beetle from Majorca island, after studying the linear and curvilinear regression between these two variables. The existence of specimens situated at different heights of the regression lines leads to the conclusion that morphological variation is clinal. The phenomenon of “semi-isolation” to which the studied populations are subjected, because of their cavernicolous character, allows to explain the existence of a cline in such a restricted area as that occupied by this beetle (ca. 500 Km …
The Occurrence Of The Troglobitic Amphipod, Stygobromus Tenuis Tenuis (Smith) (Crangonyctidae) In The Taconic Mountains Of Southwestern Massachusetts (Usa): A Case For The Existence Of A Subterranean Refugium In A Glaciated Region, Douglas G. Smith
International Journal of Speleology
Stygobromus t. tenuis is one of only two species of troglobitic amphipods known to occur in the New England physiographic province. The rarity of subterranean organisms in New England is attributed to limited karst development and eradication of organisms from the region during glacial times. Traditionally it has been believed that those troglobitic species presently occurring north of the glacial terminus migrated there following glacial retreat from refugia south of the areas influenced by glacial conditions. However, a few recent studies favour the existence of subsurface refugia in glaciated regions during glacial times. Stygobromus t. tenuis is recorded from springs …

The Anatomy And Histology Of The Alimentary Tract Of The Blind Catfish Horaglanis Krishnai Menon, T. V. Anna Mercy, N. Krishna Pillai
International Journal of Speleology
H. krishnai is a blind catfish inhabiting the dug-out wells at Kottavam Kerala, South India. Studies on the alimentary tract of the fish show that, the alimentary tract, though typically teleostean, shows several adaptive modifications. The bulbous stomach helps in storing food which is helpful in an environment chronically deficient in food. The ileo-rectal sphincter helps in retaining the digested food in the intestine for a long duration to facilitate maximum absorption. This is very helpful as the intestine is short. The liver is well developed.

In recent years, Witkop and coworkers have isolated several structurally unique alkaloids from the colombian frog belonging to the genera Dendrobates. These alkaloids, which occur in the defensive skin secretions of the frog have been found to be highly active venoms as well as mucosal tissue irritants towards both mammals and reptiles. Among them are three important alkaloids histrionicotoxin, isodihydrohistronicotoxin and octahydrohistronicotoxin.

Computer Aided Simulation Of A Heating, Ventilating, And Air Conditioning System In A Building, Sunil Shrikrishna Kulkarni
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The Godwin Life Science Building on the Old Dominion University campus presents an interesting problem in terms of energy conservation. The building is the maximum energy resource consumer on the campus, having a criterion value of 234 KBtu/sq.ft-year (2657 MJoules/sq. rneter-year). A Simplified Energy Analysis Method (ASEAM) loads and systems computer program was used to simulate the building and its heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) plant in order to understand the building's high annual energy resource consumption rate, and to devise ways to overcome it. The main goal was to assess and propose energy conservation improvements to the existing …

A Model For Orientation Effects In Electron‐Transfer Reactions, Paul Siders, Robert J. Cave, R.A. Marcus
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
A method for solving the single‐particle Schrödinger equation with an oblate spheroidal potential of finite depth is presented. The wave functions are then used to calculate the matrix element TBA which appears in theories of nonadiabatic electron transfer. The results illustrate the effects of mutual orientation and separation of the two centers on TBA. Trends in these results are discussed in terms of geometrical and nodal structure effects. Analytical expressions related to TBA for states of spherical wells are presented and used to analyze the nodal structure effects for TBA for the spheroidal wells.

The Variability Of Holocene Climate Change: Evidence From Varved Lake Sediments, Walter E. Dean, J. Platt Bradbury, Roger Y. Anderson, Cathy Barnosky
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Varved sediments from a lake near the present forest-prairie border in northwestern Minnesota provide an annual record of climate change for the last 10,400 years. Climate-sensitive mineral, chemical, and biological components show that the mid-Holocene dry interval between 8500 and 4000 years ago is asymmetrical and actually consists of two distinct drier pulses separated by a moister interval that lasted about 600 years. Cyclic fluctuations with periods of several hundred years were abrupt and persistent throughout the Holocene and are most clearly recorded within the two drier pulses.

Artificial Intelligence: Myths And Realities, Hugo D'Alarcao
Bridgewater Review
Artificial intelligence the name conjures images of mechanical monsters, the Golem, Dr. Frankenstein’s creation and the rebellious computer Hal. We have always been fascinated by the possibility of creating a machine in our image, but this fascination is often accompanied by apprehension. We fear losing control of our creation and suspect that it might turn against us. It is this duality, this conflict between the desire to create and the fear of the consequences of the creation that has been so successfully exploited by writers. It is also, in part, this fascination that has recently brought the field of Artificial …

Benthic Diatom Community Dynamics In The Colorado River: Interactive Effects Of Periodic Dessication And Current Regime, Christopher Gerard Peterson
Publications (WR)
The response to periodic desiccation of periphyton communities developed in eddy environments or in areas exposed to variable, direct current was examined. Algal communities were incubated on clay tiles for between 2 and 12 weeks in the Colorado River, directly below Hoover Dam from October, 1983 - January, 1984. Mean daily discharge from the dam decreased over this period. To assess the influence of these discharge changes on community dynamics, samples collected over the first 12 weeks of the investigation were compared to samples of the same age collected over the final 8 weeks.
The small diatom taxon Achnahthes spp …

Late Tertiary Rodents From The Catamarca Province, Argentina : The Field Museum Collections, Lee A. Schremp
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The rodents collected in the 1920's by the Marshall Field Expedition for the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, are systematically reviewed and placed within the stratigraphic framework established at the time of collection. One new genus (Proeuryzygomys) and three new species (Abracoma intermedias, Proeuryzygomys diminutiva, and Cayiodon (Lelongia) catamarcensis) are proposed. Two distinct faunas are recognized corresponding to the Huayquerian and Montehermosan Land Mammal Ages respectively. Several computer programs were developed to aid in character analysis.
Hydrogeologic And Geochemical Factors Influencing The Impact Of A Chromium-Arsenic-Copper Wastewater Discharge On A Glacial Outwash Aquifer, Michael J. Gallagher
Hydrogeologic And Geochemical Factors Influencing The Impact Of A Chromium-Arsenic-Copper Wastewater Discharge On A Glacial Outwash Aquifer, Michael J. Gallagher
Masters Theses
A discharge of chromium-arsenic-copper laden wastewater occurred periodically from 1970 to 1980 at a wood preserving company located in southwestern Kalamazoo County, Michigan. As a result of this discharge, soils at the company site became contaminated with chromium, arsenic, and copper, and a local glacial outwash aquifer became contaminated with hexavalent chromium.
Soil samples collected from the discharge site were analyzed for clay-silt-sand-gravel content, organic matter, pH, clay mineralogy, and chromium, arsenic, copper, iron, and manganese content. Background soil samples were analyzed for most of the above catagories. Pearson r coefficients of correlation were calculated to determine the correlation of …

Statistical Consulting In A Geographically Dispersed Organization, Richard M. Engeman, William E. Dusenberry
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
There has been much discussion in the recent statistical literature concerning the optimal manner for a consulting statistician to operate within a larger organization. Marquardt (1979) described the "total involvement" approach, involving a statistician from conceptualization of a project to the final report; Finney (1982) discussed the questions a statistician should ask for effective consulting; and Bishop, Peterson, and Tragser (1982) argued that a statistician's most substantive contributions are made during the planning stages of a study. McCulloch et al. (1982) described a program for training statistical consultants, and Hunter (1981) discussed the roles a statistician may assume.

A Proposal To Fertilize The Overton Arm And Gregg Basin Areas Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson
Publications (WR)
Several limnological studies have been conducted in Lake Mead during the past decade. The recent studies clearly show that most of Lake Mead is deficient in nutrients, especially phosphorus, and very low in productivity. The reservoir-wide average total phosphorus concentration for 1981 - 1982 was only 9 mg/m3. This is below levels found In most oligotrophic lakes and reservoirs. Algal biomass, as measured by chlorophyll-a, averaged only 1.5 mg/m3. That also places Lake Mead in the oligotrophic range. Transparency, as measured by a Secchi disc, averaged 9-5 m in Lake Mead during 1981-1982. That far exceeds …

Some Comments On The Concepts Of Dose And Dose Equivalent, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Some Comments On The Concepts Of Dose And Dose Equivalent, Robert Katz, Werner Hofmann
Robert Katz Publications
Although dose is the simplest and most widely used measurement of a radiation field, it does not always lead to an unambiguous estimate of response. This is reflected in the very wide range of relative biologic effectiveness (RBE) values for biological systems. The ambiguity arises from the focus on energy deposition as the source of biological effect, whether in macroscopic or microscopic volumes. The properties of the biological detector play a role equally important to the properties of the radiation field in their interaction. To predict even the most experimentally accessible biological response, cell killing, we must know the probability …
