Pastoral Systems Of Central Himalaya: How Long Will They Survive?, K S. Rao, K G. Saxena Sep 2024

Pastoral Systems Of Central Himalaya: How Long Will They Survive?, K S. Rao, K G. Saxena

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Pastoral systems of Central Himalaya are very old and until recent time were in balance with environment, Recent changes in sociopolitical setup have drastically altered the status of these systems. The change of political power in trans-Himalayan Tibetean plateau has resulted in closure of international boarders, thus taking away the mercantile aspects of pastoralists and reducing pastoral area. Increased human disturbances on fragile Himalayan marginal lands and excessive onslaught on forests for fuel and fodder by the sedentary population has resulted in degradation and non-productive grasslands which do not help pastoralists sustain existing systems. Changes in relations between migratory pastoralists …

Sustainable Direction For Resource Management An Assessment Of The Regional Council Role, Allan Lohrey Sep 2024

Sustainable Direction For Resource Management An Assessment Of The Regional Council Role, Allan Lohrey

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The 1980s has seen an increased world awareness of the concept of sustainability. In 1991 New Zealand enacted the Resource Management Act (RMA) which reflected society's concern for a need to consider future generations when making decisions relating to the use of natural resources. Regional councils have been allocated the role within the Act to promote sustainable management at the regional level. The short term challenge to regional councils is to manage resources in manner which strikes a pragmatic balance between the ongoing needs of society and the need to provide resources for future generations. Regional councils will know they …

Neurosymbolic Cognitive Methods For Enhancing Foundation Model-Based Reasoning, Kaushik Roy, Siyu Wu, Alessandro Oltramari Sep 2024

Neurosymbolic Cognitive Methods For Enhancing Foundation Model-Based Reasoning, Kaushik Roy, Siyu Wu, Alessandro Oltramari

Faculty Publications

Foundation models have emerged as powerful tools, exhibiting extraordinary performance across various tasks, such as language processing, visual recognition, code generation, and human-centered engagement. However, recent studies have highlighted their limitations when grounded, abstract, and generalized reasoning capabilities are required. Complex tasks often involve multiple hierarchical reasoning steps, which are typical features of human thinking processes. In fact, in this chapter we claim that cognitively-inspired computational models, such as the so-called Common Model of Cognition, are key to enable complex reasoning within foundation model-based artificial intelligence (AI) systems. We investigate neurosymbolic approaches for mapping AI system components to those of …

Breakthrough Conductivity Enhancement In Deep Eutectic Solvents Via Grotthuss-Type Proton Transport, Desiree Mae Prado, Clemens Burda, Anthony Jahng, Kayla Poling

Faculty Scholarship

There is an increasing demand for the development of ion-conducting electrolytes for energy storage systems. Much attention is directed toward deep eutectic solvents as potential candidates. In the search for highly conductive systems, the possibility of designing deep eutectic solvents with Grotthuss-type proton transport is widely overlooked. Herein, ethaline, a mixture of choline chloride and ethylene glycol is used in a 1:2 molar ratio, to induce a significant conductivity increase with the addition of water and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄). The achieved breakthrough conductivity is analyzed experimentally and simulated with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). At sufficient water content, an H-bonding …

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

Let G be a finite, weighted graph, and let [[EQUATION]] be a Time-scale with a fixed point [[EQUATION]] such that sup[[EQUATION]]. In this paper we construct the heat kernel on G in Time-scale [[EQUATION]] in terms of a certain convolution series involving he heat operator acting on a parametrix, which is a fairly general function depending on the vertex set of G and the time variable [[EQUATION]]. We develop some applications by choosing different parametrices and various Time-scales. The results we obtain here do extend, in part, aspects of the recent articles in that the Time-scale considered in this paper …

What Does A Scientist Look Like? Children's Perceptions Of Scientist Gender And Skin Tone, Angelina Joy, Channing J. Mathews, Adam Hartstone-Rose, Kelly Lynn Mulvaney

Purdue Center for Early Learning Faculty and Staff Publications

When asked to draw a scientist, children typically draw a gender stereotypical male representation; however, research has not yet assessed these representations in terms of scientist stereotypical skin tone. The current study examined children's (N = 69, 66.7% female, Mage = 7.60, SD = 2.13) scientist perceptions by analyzing both the gender and skin tone of their scientist drawings as well as stereotypical features represented (lab coats, scientific instruments, etc.). This study also examined how these perceptions as reflected in the drawings were related to children's explicit gender stereotypes and their science growth mindset. Boys were less likely …

Assessing Prevalence Of Blood Parasites And Ranaviruses In Hong Kong Freshwater Turtles, Julia Leung Sep 2024

Assessing Prevalence Of Blood Parasites And Ranaviruses In Hong Kong Freshwater Turtles, Julia Leung

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Blood parasites and ranaviruses are pathogens that impact freshwater turtles worldwide. Given that native turtle species in Hong Kong are already at a high risk of extinction, their survival becomes even more threatened in the event of a disease outbreak. However, prevalence of these pathogens among the native population in Hong Kong remains unstudied.

In this study, I aim to (1) obtain baseline prevalence data of blood parasites and ranaviruses in Hong Kong freshwater turtles, (2) compare different methods for detecting blood parasites and ranaviruses, (3) evaluate the applicability of using blood parasites as a wildlife forensic tool, assess and …

Domain-Based Nucleic-Acid Minimum Free Energy: Algorithmic Hardness And Parameterized Bounds, Erik D. Demaine, Elize Grizzell, Jayson Lynch, Ahmed Shalaby, Timothy Gomez, Markus Hecher, Robert Schweller, Damien Woods

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Molecular programmers and nanostructure engineers use domain-level design to abstract away messy DNA/RNA sequence, chemical and geometric details. Such domain-level abstractions are enforced by sequence design principles and provide a key principle that allows scaling up of complex multistranded DNA/RNA programs and structures. Determining the most favoured secondary structure, or Minimum Free Energy (MFE), of a set of strands, is typically studied at the sequence level but has seen limited domain-level work. We analyse the computational complexity of MFE for multistranded systems in a simple setting were we allow only 1 or 2 domains per strand. On the one hand, …

Evalution Of The Ability To Infer Tilt Angle And Size Distributions Of Fish Using A Broadband Scientific Echosounder Based On Simulation, Jing Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The biological information, such as species, size, and tilt angle, is crucial for converting the echo data into biomass information in acoustic surveys. Typically, the information can be obtained through trawl net sampling or underwater camera observations. However, both methods have some limitations. To overcome these limitations, scientists have utilized inversion methods with multi-frequency and broadband echosounders to derive biological information about fish, plankton, and krill. However, evaluating the reliability and accuracy of these inversion methods has been challenging due to the difficulty in obtaining accurate biological information. In this study, a numerical simulation method was used to generate fish …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Early recognition of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its precursor state, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), is pivotal in interrupting the progression of the disease and providing suitable treatment. Recent development in deep learning techniques has drawn great research attention for improving the efficacy of AD recognition. However, numerous current methods solely utilize data from a single auxiliary domain, limiting their ability to harness valuable intrinsic insights from multiple domains. To cope with the challenge, this paper is devoted to establishing an innovative multimodal medical data fusion model, termed as MMDF, to perform Alzheimer’s disease recognition. Multimodal data including clinical records and …

Development And Benchmark Of Polarizable Models For Ions, Luke Landry Sep 2024

Development And Benchmark Of Polarizable Models For Ions, Luke Landry

Dissertations

Metalloproteins are ubiquitous in biology, playing crucial roles in diverse processes. Meanwhile, molecular simulations have become an important tool in scientific research. To accurately simulate metalloprotein systems, accounting for polarization and charge transfer effects is required. The fluctuating charge (FQ) model can effectively simulate the charge transfer effect, but the existing models often lack specificity for metalloproteins. In our research, a tailored FQ model for zinc-containing metalloproteins, leveraging the extended charge equilibration (EQeq) scheme, was introduced. CM5 charges were used as the target in our model parameterization, which offers advantages over RESP/CHELPG charges. Most notably, CM5 charges hold independence over …

Basal materials in ice cores hold information about paleoclimate conditions, glacial processes, and the timing of past ice-free intervals, all of which aid understanding of ice sheet stability and its contribution to sea level rise in a warming climate. Only a few cores have been drilled through ice sheets into the underlying sediment and bedrock, producing limited material for analysis. The last of three Camp Century ice cores, which the U.S. Army collected in northwestern Greenland from 1963-1966 CE, recovered about 3.5 m of subglacial material, including ice and sediment. Here, we document the scientific history of the Camp Century …

Meta-Analysis Of Set-Based Multiple Phenotype Association Test Based On Gwas Summary Statistics From Different Cohorts, Lirong Zhu, Shuanglin Zhang, Qiuying Sha

Michigan Tech Publications

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have emerged as popular tools for identifying genetic variants that are associated with complex diseases. Standard analysis of a GWAS involves assessing the association between each variant and a disease. However, this approach suffers from limited reproducibility and difficulties in detecting multi-variant and pleiotropic effects. Although joint analysis of multiple phenotypes for GWAS can identify and interpret pleiotropic loci which are essential to understand pleiotropy in diseases and complex traits, most of the multiple phenotype association tests are designed for a single variant, resulting in much lower power, especially when their effect sizes are small and …

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) with atmospheric concentrations that have nearly tripled since pre-industrial times. Wetlands account for a large share of global CH4 emissions, yet the magnitude and factors controlling CH4 fluxes in tidal wetlands remain uncertain. We synthesized CH4 flux data from 100 chamber and 9 eddy covariance (EC) sites across tidal marshes in the conterminous United States to assess controlling factors and improve predictions of CH4 emissions. This effort included creating an open-source database of chamber-based GHG fluxes (https://doi.org/10.25573/serc.14227085). Annual fluxes across chamber and EC sites averaged 26 ± 53 g CH4 …

A Marine Knowledge System For Ocean Affairs: Integrating Data, Evaluating Usage, And Enabling Sustainable Marine Management, Yu-Jen Pan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study presents the evolution and assessment of the Marine Knowledge Education System (MKES), designed to improve user acceptance among students in professional marine science courses in Taiwan. The MKES leverages real-world maritime cases from the General Coast Guard Administration and is built upon existing technologies like cloud services, social networks, and data analysis tools. The technology acceptance model (TAM) provides the theoretical underpinning for the assessment of user confidence. Data was collected from 190 participants through purposive sampling. Path analysis confirmed all hypothesized relationships within the TAM with statistical significance (p < 0.001). Additionally, paired-sample t-tests revealed a significant increase in student acceptance of the MKES after integrating it into the marine science curriculum. These findings underscore the capacity of the MKES as a digital learning tool to enrich course pedagogy and improve student learning outcomes, thereby offering valuable support in advancing the education of professional marine managers.

The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash Sep 2024

The Foodpunk City: Advancing Portland's Food Security Through A Shared Ideology Of Adaptation & Resistance, Nickolas Hash

Dissertations and Theses

Food injustice is a form of violence perpetrated by state and corporate actors against a constituency under their governing power, particularly impacting marginalized and impoverished communities. It denies individuals access to nutritious food, perpetuating cycles of poverty, inequality, physical health risks, and social exclusion. Grassroots movements have emerged to challenge dominant paradigms and advocate for food sovereignty, agroecology, and food anarchy. In Portland, the movement represents a nontraditional approach to food security that closely resembles the reactionary ideology of urban "punk" culture. Both groups prioritize community autonomy over food systems, sustainable agricultural practices, and resistance to oppressive structures that perpetuate …

Therefore, a current study to determine if chemical byproducts are contaminating local estuaries …

Striatal Beat Frequency Interval Timing Model With Microgravity Stressor, Jason Michael Fitzgerald, Sorinel Oprisan Sep 2024

Striatal Beat Frequency Interval Timing Model With Microgravity Stressor, Jason Michael Fitzgerald, Sorinel Oprisan

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

The Striatal Beat Frequency (SBF) model of interval timing uses frontal cortex (FC) neural oscillations to record the state of the brain at the reinforcement time Tc during fixed interval (FI) procedures in the long-term memory (LMEM). The state of the FC oscillators at any given time is stored in a short-term memory (SMEM) buffer. The SBF model uses the spiny neurons of the basal ganglia (BG) as coincidence detectors to produce beats between the content of the SMEM and LMEM. Across multiple species that can perform interval timing, there are two invariant properties: (a) the timing is precise, and …
