Developing A Coordinated Statewide Wildlife Damage Management Research And Extension Education Program, Paul D. Curtis, Daniel J. Decker

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Dealing with the negative side of human-wildlife interactions has become an increasingly important part of wildlife man-agement. This situation is due to a combina-tion of factors: human population growth and urbanization, patterns of land use associ-ated with human activities, and the increase in abundance of some wildlife species that cause problems for people. A broad consen-sus exists among state wildlife agency staff, state agricultural department staff, wildlife extension specialists, U.S. Department of Agriculture-Animal Damage Control agents, and state Farm Bureau officials that wildlife damage on agricultural lands has increased during the past 30 years, and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) currently …

Animal Damage Control: Are We Prepared For The Next Century?, Bobby R. Acord

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

I am pleased to be here with you today to discuss Animal Damage Control (ADC). I am also very pleased to see the number of ADC people attending this conference. It is an important indication of our professionalism. During the past several months, I have spoken to many of our people in ADC to challenge them to think about the future of our program. I have also spoken to many of our cooperators such as livestock organizations and resource management agencies about the same thing. This has been done in an effort to broaden our thinking about animal damage control …

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Nebraska is a major agricultural state. Nebraska ranks first in the nation in number of cattle on feed and fed cattle marketed, second in cash receipts from all livestock marketing, first in production of Great Northern beans, popcorn and alfalfa meal, and third in corn production. Agriculture is important to the state's economy. Some economists project that one-half of Nebraska workers depend on agriculture and the many related industries for their employment. The annual value of agricultural production in Nebraska is more than 8 billion dollars. Agriculture and wildlife damage problems often go hand-in-hand. We have problems in agricultural situations …

Landscape Plants, Forest Trees, And Crops Most Resistant To Mammal Damage: An Overview, Rex E. Marsh Apr 1991

Landscape Plants, Forest Trees, And Crops Most Resistant To Mammal Damage: An Overview, Rex E. Marsh

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

To capitalize on mammal-resistant plants, several approaches may be taken. The most common is to select crops not highly prone to mammal damage (i.e., resistant crops). If a generally susceptible crop is to be grown, the more resistant varieties or cultivars of that crop can be selected, if known. An approach that has not received the attention it warrants is the selection of parent stock with resistant characteristics and the selective breeding of useful species to develop strains, hybrids, or cultivars with improved mammal resistance. For several reasons, this latter approach shows the most promise for forest tree species. It …

Vertebrate Impacts On Oak Regeneration In California: A Review Of Management Options, Robert H. Schmidt, Robert M. Timm Apr 1991

Vertebrate Impacts On Oak Regeneration In California: A Review Of Management Options, Robert H. Schmidt, Robert M. Timm

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Hardwoods occupy about 25% of the total forest area in California (Bolsinger 1988). Predominant among the hardwoods are oaks (Table 1). Over the past 10 years, concerns have been raised about the ability of some oak woodland stands to replace themselves. These concerns have focused on 2 distinct management dilemmas. The first involves the gradual loss of oak woodland acreage due to human activities. These activities often involve some type of conversion, such as the clearing of trees for rangeland improvement, production agriculture, or residential development (Schmidt and Tietje 1987). The rapid increase in California's population means more pressure on …

Effectiveness Of Nylon Lines For Deterring Rock Doves From Landing On Ledges, William F. Andelt, Kenneth P. Burnham

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Abstract: The effectiveness of 74-kg, white, twisted nylon twine was evaluated for deterring rock doves (Columba livia) from landing on ledges at Colorado State University's Hughes Stadium in a controlled experiment during 1990. One, 2, and 3 lines were stretched 8 cm in front and 12 cm above (1 line), 8 and 18 cm above (2 lines), and 5, 12, and 18 cm above (3 lines) the ledges. The proportion of successful landings to attempted landings was reduced from 0.99 (0 lines) to 0.23 (1 line), 0.13 (2 lines), and 0.10 (3 lines). The number of pretreatment landings per ledge …

An Evolutionary Approach To Load Balancing Parallel Computations, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox Apr 1991

An Evolutionary Approach To Load Balancing Parallel Computations, N. Mansouri, Geoffrey C. Fox

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

We present a new approach to balancing the workload in a multicomputer when the problem is decomposed into subproblems mapped to the processors. It is based on a hybrid genetic algorithm. A number of design choices for genetic algorithms are combined in order to ameliorate the problem of premature convergence that is often encountered in the implementation of classical genetic algorithms. The algorithm is hybridized by including a hill climbing procedure which significantly improves the efficiency of the evolution. Moreover, it makes use of problem specific information to evade some computational costs and to reinforce favorable aspects of the genetic …

Plate Tectonics, Space, Geologic Time, And The Great Plains: A Primer For Non-Geologists, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. Apr 1991

Plate Tectonics, Space, Geologic Time, And The Great Plains: A Primer For Non-Geologists, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

For most Americans, "The Great Plains" evokes images of grasslands, dust storms, prairie fires, Native Americans on horseback, cowboys and wheat lands, and perhaps flat valleys crossed by braided rivers carrying a heavy load of sand and gravel, extremes of weather, and a climate typified by an alternation of droughts and wetter periods. Geologists picture such general images, too, but they also see radical changes in the landscape over periods expressed in millions rather than hundreds of years. Geologically speaking, human activities on the Great Plains are too recent to have much of a place in the broad geologic history …

Synthesis And Characterization Of An 18-Membered Macrocyclic Ligand Containing 2,2-Biimidazole For Selective Binding Of Transition Metal Ions, Mark Barnett Apr 1991

Synthesis And Characterization Of An 18-Membered Macrocyclic Ligand Containing 2,2-Biimidazole For Selective Binding Of Transition Metal Ions, Mark Barnett

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

A description of the synthetic approach to the preparation of an 18 membered macrocyclic ligand containing 2/2'-biimidazole is presented. A diol derivative of 2,2'-biimidazole is tosylated with p-toluene sulfonyl chloride making it susceptible to bimolecular substitution with a disodium salt of tetratosylated triethylenetetraamine. The final desired product is an 18N6 macrocycle, 4,7-(l,l'-(2,2'-biimidazolo))-l,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane, potentially capable of binding transition metal ions in various combinations with three chelating sites. Initial characterization includes NMR and IR spectroscopic analysis.

The Role Of Inositol Phosphate Cascade In Visual Excitation Of Invertebrate Microvillar Photoreceptors, Tamara M. Frank, A. Fein Apr 1991

The Role Of Inositol Phosphate Cascade In Visual Excitation Of Invertebrate Microvillar Photoreceptors, Tamara M. Frank, A. Fein

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The identity of the transmitter(s) involved in visual transduction in invertebrate microvillar photoreceptors remains unresolved. In this study, the role of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) was examined in Limulus ventral photoreceptors by studying the effects on the light response of heparin and neomycin, agents that inhibit the production or action of IP3. Both heparin and neomycin reduce responses to brief flashes of light and the transient component of responses to steps of light, and also inhibit IP3-induced calcium release, indicating that IP3 plays a direct role in invertebrate visual excitation. The effects of BAPTA, …

An Analysis Of Dissolved Organic Compounds And Their Contribution To Iron Complexation In The Shallow Leachate Plume Of The West Kl Landfill Kalamazoo, Michigan, Eric Fahle Apr 1991

An Analysis Of Dissolved Organic Compounds And Their Contribution To Iron Complexation In The Shallow Leachate Plume Of The West Kl Landfill Kalamazoo, Michigan, Eric Fahle

Masters Theses

High concentrations of dissolved iron are present in downgradient groundwater samples adjacent to the western border of the West KL Landfill. Analysis by Rudder (1988) of groundwater samples indicates oversaturation of selected iron oxides, iron sulfides and siderite in monitoring wells TW-4 and M3.

Previous research suggests that pyrogallol, gallic acid, tannic acid and similar organic compounds may retard the oxidation of ferrous iron in the shallow leachate plume of the West KL landfill (Rudder, 1988). Present research utilizing solid phase extraction, reverse phase high performance chromatography, Fourier transform IR spectrophotometry, UV/Visible spectrophotometry, and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy indicate that pyrogallol, …

Removal Of Chlorine From Chlorine-Nitrogen Mixture In A Film Of Liquid Water, Sarwan S. Sandhu Apr 1991

Removal Of Chlorine From Chlorine-Nitrogen Mixture In A Film Of Liquid Water, Sarwan S. Sandhu

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In industry there are many examples of absorption of a gas with or without chemical reaction in the liquid phase. In physical absorption, a particular gaseous component is removed from a gas mixture due to its larger solubility in the liquid phase solvent. The removal of butane and pentane from a refinery gas mixture by a heavy oil in the liquid phase is an example of physical absorption. In absorption with chemical reaction, the gaseous component to be removed transfers across the gas-liquid interface due to a difference in the bulk chemical potentials or concentrations in the two phases. The …

Molecular-Orbital Studies Via Satellite-Free X-Ray Fluorescence: Cl-K Absorption And K–Valence-Level Emission Spectra Of Chlorofluoromethanes, Rupert C. Perera, P. L. Cowan, Dennis W. Lindle, R. E. Lavilla, T. Jach, R. D. Deslattes Apr 1991

Molecular-Orbital Studies Via Satellite-Free X-Ray Fluorescence: Cl-K Absorption And K–Valence-Level Emission Spectra Of Chlorofluoromethanes, Rupert C. Perera, P. L. Cowan, Dennis W. Lindle, R. E. Lavilla, T. Jach, R. D. Deslattes

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

X-ray absorption and emission measurements in the vicinity of the chlorine K edge of the three chlorofluoromethanes have been made using monochromatic synchrotron radiation as the source of excitation. By selectively tuning the incident radiation to just above the Cl 1s single-electron ionization threshold for each molecule, less complex x-ray-emission spectra are obtained. This reduction in complexity is attributed to the elimination of multielectron transitions in the Cl K shell, which commonly produce satellite features in x-ray emission. The resulting "satellite-free" x-ray-emission spectra exhibit peaks due only to electrons in valence molecular orbitals filling a single Cl 1s vacancy. These …

Biological Effectiveness Of High-Energy Protons: Target Fragmentation, Francis A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, Ferenc Hajnal Apr 1991

Biological Effectiveness Of High-Energy Protons: Target Fragmentation, Francis A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, Ferenc Hajnal

Robert Katz Publications

High-energy protons traversing tissue produce local sources of high-linear-energy-transfer (LET) ions through nuclear fragmentation. We examine the contribution of these target fragments to the biological effectiveness of high-energy protons using the cellular track model. The effects of secondary ions are treated in terms of the production collision density using energy-dependent parameters from a high-energy fragmentation model. Calculations for mammalian cell cultures show that at high dose, at which intertrack effects become important, protons deliver damage similar to that produced by γ rays, and with fragmentation the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of protons increases moderately from unity. At low dose, where …

The Effects Of Urbanization On A Portion Of The Portage Creek Watershed: A Case Study On Surface Water And Groundwater Quality, Susan E. Rezek Apr 1991

The Effects Of Urbanization On A Portion Of The Portage Creek Watershed: A Case Study On Surface Water And Groundwater Quality, Susan E. Rezek

Masters Theses

The surface water and groundwater quality in the study area of the Portage Creek watershed was analyzed to determine the possible effects of urbanization. Dry weather and wet weather surface water and groundwater samples were collected from June 1986 to November 1986 at selected stations in the watershed.

Water samples were analyzed for 26 inorganic and organic parameters. Most concentrations were below analytic method detection limits. The analytical data indicate that sodium and chloride are the principal contaminants resulting from urbanization. The probable source of the contamination is deicing salt applied to the City of Portage, Michigan streets.

Overall, the …

Bird Hazing And Frightening Methods And Techniques (With Emphasis On Containment Ponds), Rex E. Marsh, William A. Erickson, Terrell P. Salmon

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Our primary purpose in preparing this overview of bird hazing or frightening methods and techniques is to provide the owners and operators of agricultural evaporation ponds with all possible information on hazing to minimize bird use of the ponds and reduce their exposure to possible contamination from accumulated substances, such as selenium.

While our main objective was to assist pond managers, our coverage of bird hazing is intentionally broad enough to be highly relevant to protect many agricultural crops and some aquaculture facilities from bird depredations, and to reduce bird numbers at airports where the potential for bird-aircraft strikes is …

Fisheries Research Report No 91 - A Synopsis Of The Biology And The Exploitation Of The Australasian Pilchard, Sardinops Neopilchardus (Steindachner) Part Ii: History Of Stock Assessment And Exploitation, W. J. Fletcher

Fisheries Research Reports

This report summarises the studies which have provided information on the population characteristics and exploitation of the pilchard, Sardinops neopilchardus in Australia and New Zealand. This review was undertaken to determine whether existing data could be used to assess the status of Western Australian or other stocks or, alternatively, what additional information was required.

The mean size of pilchards caught varies among locations but, in general, fish are between 140 and 160 mm LCF, corresponding to ages 2 - 5 years. The length-weight relationship also varies between locations

Attempts to initiate pilchard fisheries have been hampered by the lack of …

Advice For Undergraduates On Special Aspects Of Writing Mathematics, Stephen B. Maurer Mar 1991

Advice For Undergraduates On Special Aspects Of Writing Mathematics, Stephen B. Maurer

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

There are several guides to good mathematical writing for professionals, but few for undergraduates. Yet undergraduates who write mathematics papers need special guidance. For instance, professionals may need help writing clear definitions, but at least they know why explicit definitions are needed and know the basic format. In general, mathematics has many special formats that are not mere technical conventions but instead serve important purposes. Often students are not conscious of these conventions, and they rarely know their purposes. This paper contains a guide for students written in light of these observations.

Polarized X-Ray-Emission Studies Of Methyl Chloride And The Chlorofluoromethanes, Dennis W. Lindle, P. L. Cowan, T. Jach, R. E. Lavilla, R. D. Deslattes, Rupert C. Perera Mar 1991

Polarized X-Ray-Emission Studies Of Methyl Chloride And The Chlorofluoromethanes, Dennis W. Lindle, P. L. Cowan, T. Jach, R. E. Lavilla, R. D. Deslattes, Rupert C. Perera

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research

A new technique sensitive to molecular orientation and geometry, and based on measuring the polarization of x-ray emission, has been applied to the Cl-containing molecules methyl chloride (CH3Cl) and the chlorofluoromethanes (CF3Cl, CF2Cl2, and CFCl3) in the gas phase. Upon selective excitation using monochromatic synchrotron radiation in the Cl K-edge (Cl 1s) near-threshold region, polarization-selective x-ray emission studies reveal highly polarized molecular valence x-ray fluorescence for all four molecules. The degree and the orientation of the polarized emission are observed to be sensitive to the incident excitation energy near …

Regulating Air Toxics In Rhode Island: Policy Vs. Technical Decisions, Julie A. Roque

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Dr. Roqu6 recounts her work as a doctoral candidate at Brown in developing standards for the regulation of airborne carcinogens. Based in part on this experience, she argues that care needs be taken lest those who regulate Risk bury key policy decisions within a mass of often irrelevant technical details.
