Amblyrhiza And The Vertebrate Paleontology Of Anguillean Caves, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Ross D. E. Macphee Jan 1993

Amblyrhiza And The Vertebrate Paleontology Of Anguillean Caves, Donald A. Mcfarlane, Ross D. E. Macphee

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Recorded interest in the caves of Anguilla dates back to the second half of the nineteenth century. The earliest explorations were concerned with the locating phosphatic cave earths, and resulted in the mining of several sites. Incidental to this work, the bones of the largest island rodent ever discovered were collected from Aguillan caves. Whereas the phosphate mining operations were short-lived, the remains of the giant rodent Amblyrhiza have catalyzed a continued interest in the caves of Anguilla. The most recent series of explorations have provided the first adequate documentation of Amhlyrhiza fossil sites, and have started to yield radiometric …

Effects Of Domestic Wastewater Effluent On The Water Quality And Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In A Sharp County, Arkansas Stream, Linda E. Moss, George L. Harp Jan 1993

Effects Of Domestic Wastewater Effluent On The Water Quality And Aquatic Macroinvertebrates In A Sharp County, Arkansas Stream, Linda E. Moss, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the effluent of the Ash Flat Wastewater Treatment Plant changes the water quality or aquatic macroinvertebrate community structure of North Big Creek. Weekly water samples were analyzed for pH, N, P, COD, TSS and fecal coliform bacteria from 17 June to 19 August 1992. Aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected biweekly using a Turtox Indestructible™ Dip Net, and density indices were calculated. Station 1, above the effluent, was a spring habitat. Fecal coliform, N, P, TSS and COD values were higher at this station, while the aquatic macroinvertebrate community was relatively simple. The …

Controlling Mountain Beaver Damage In Forest Plantations, David S. De Calesta, Ralph E. Duddles, Michael C. Bondi Jan 1993

Controlling Mountain Beaver Damage In Forest Plantations, David S. De Calesta, Ralph E. Duddles, Michael C. Bondi

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Damage to conifer regeneration by mountain beavers, more commonly called boomers, results in significant losses in Western Oregon annually. Most of the damage is to 1- to 5-year-old conifer seedlings. Where populations are high, repeated clipping by mountain beavers can cause loss of production through poorly stocked acres-even reforestation failures.

Damage can continue on saplings up to 15 to 20 years old; however, newly planted seedlings are particularly vulnerable. In a few instances, extensive burrowing can undermine the roots of larger trees enough to topple them.

This publication will help you design a program to reduce mountain beaver damage in …

Evaluation Of Roadside Stabilization And Beautification Plantings In South-Central Utah, United States Department Of Agriculture, Forest Service

Plants

Numerous roadside plantings at semiarid sites in the south-central Utah counties of Juab, Sanpete, and Sevier were intended to stabilize roadsides with plants harmonizing with natural vegetation. The plantings, originally for demonstration, began in the 1950's. They included bareroot transplants and direct seedings. Soils and geologic substrates at six sites were analyzed for 15 characteristics. Plant performance and survival was summarized for 37 sites. Thirty species established well by direct seeding and 62 species established well from transplants. Numerous other species have also persisted at the planting sites but are not as vigorous or as well adapted. Direct seedings were …

Rangeland Monitoring: Analysis, Interpretation, And Evaluation, United States Bureau Of Land Management

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The collection of monitoring data results in quantitative and qualitative information obtained from measurements or estimates of the natural resources. These data are most valuable when their meaning is defined and presented in understandable terms to the resource manager. This is the analysis, interpretation, and evaluation process. The result is the documentation of conclusions on the progress of management to accomplish specific management objectives. Such conclusions are used for management and planning purposes, and in particular, for determining managment actions and establishing new or revised management objectives.

Rapamycin Inhibition Of Interleukin-2-Dependent P33(Cdk2) And P34(Cdc2) Kinase Activation In T Lymphocytes, W. G. Morice, Gregory Wiederrecht, Gregory J. Brunn, John Siekierka, R. T. Abraham Jan 1993

Rapamycin Inhibition Of Interleukin-2-Dependent P33(Cdk2) And P34(Cdc2) Kinase Activation In T Lymphocytes, W. G. Morice, Gregory Wiederrecht, Gregory J. Brunn, John Siekierka, R. T. Abraham

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The immunosuppressant rapamycin (RAP) is a potent inhibitor of the entry of interleukin (IL)-2-stimulated T cells into S-phase. Earlier results indicated that RAP treatment arrested the growth of the murine IL-2-dependent T cell line CTLL-2 in late G1-phase. To explore further the interactions of RAP with the cell cycle control machinery in T cells, we examined the effects of RAP treatment on the activation of the cyclin-dependent kinases p34(cdc2) and p33(cdk2) in G1-phase CTLL-2 cells. Stimulation of factor-deprived cells with IL-2 led to the assembly of high molecular weight complexes containing active p34(cdc2) and p33(cdk2). The appearance of these complexes …

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada Jan 1993

Community Dynamics Of Phytoplankton In A Typical Navigation Pool In The Upper Mississippi River, Theodore R. Lange, Ronald G. Rada

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In 1986 we studied phytoplankton in the mid-reaches of Pool 8, which is a typical navigation pool of the Upper Mississippi River. During years of normal discharge, the areas studied usually become distinctly different from each other (ranging from free-flowing river to stagnant marsh) as the ice-free season progresses. These differences among sites did not occur during our study because the discharge into Pool 8 during 1986 was about 85% greater than the 10-yr mean discharge (1972-1982). Moreover, differences among areas were not observed with respect to physical and chemical characteristics such as photic zone depth, temperature, dissolved nitrogen and …

Skeletal Structural Basis Of Density Banding In The Reef Coral Montastrea Annularis, Richard E. Dodge, Alina Szmant-Froelich, R. Garcia, Peter K. Swart, A. Forester, J. J. Leder

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Density banding in coral skeletons can provide for reconstruction of the coral's growth en- vironment over long periods. The physical differ- ences between low and high density portions of a skeletal band are not well understood. The skeletal architecture of M. annularis from Southeast Flor- ida, the Florida Keys, St. Croix, the Bahamas, and Mexico was compared in X-ray revealed high den- sity (HD), low density (LD), and stress HD bands. Density changes arose from differences in the size, but not spacing, of exothecal structural elements (horizontal dissepiments and vertical costae). En- dothecal architecture size (e.g., columella, dissepi- ments, septa) …

G93-1191 Glossary Of Water-Related Terms, William L. Kranz, Delynn Hay, James W. Goeke, David Gosselin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide is a glossary of water quantity, quality and human health related terms involving water. Terms are defined in contexts that could affect Nebraskans. We depend upon water for our very existence. The impact of water quality and quantity issues has never been greater. Yet the terminology used to describe the water we drink, the water we provide to plants and animals, the water stored underground, in lakes, rivers, and oceans, is not well understood by many Nebraskans. This listing of water-related terms is intended to reduce the potential for misunderstanding presentations made by elected officials, environmental agencies and …

Preserves At Risk: An Investigation Of Resource Management Strategies, Implications And Opportunities, R. J. Lilieholm

Elusive Documents

Human activities already threaten the globe's physical and biological systems. Worldwide, species extinction rates are estimated to be one thousand times what they would be in the absence of human activity (Wilson 1988). Raven (1988) estimates that 25% of the world's plant and animal species existing in 1985 may be extinct by 2015, with most extinctions occurring in tropical regions. While these extinction rates are staggering, global warming would greatly accelerate extinction rates that some scientists believe may already exceed those accompanying the decline of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago (Wolf 1987).

Rapamycin-Induced Inhibition Of P34(Cdc2) Kinase Activation Is Associated With G1/S-Phase Growth Arrest In T Lymphocytes, W. G. Morice, Gregory J. Brunn, Gregory Wiederrecht, John Siekierka, R. T. Abraham

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The macrolide rapamycin (RAP) is a potent inhibitor of interleukin-2 (IL- 2)-induced T-cell proliferation. Current models suggest that RAP, when complexed to its intracellular receptor, FK506-binding protein, interferes with an IL-2 receptor-coupled signaling pathway required for cell-cycle progression from G1- to S-phase. Here we show that RAP treatment inhibits the growth of an IL-2-dependent cytotoxic T-cell line, CTLL-2, in late G1- phase, just prior to entry of the cells into S-phase. In contrast, RAP- treated CTLL-2 cells retained the ability to respond to IL-2 with enhanced cytolytic activity, indicating that RAP was not a general suppressant of cellular responsiveness to …
