Cartographic Pattern Recognition Using Template Matching, Angela G. Lammers, Ralph W. Wilkerson, Fikret ErçAl May 1993

Cartographic Pattern Recognition Using Template Matching, Angela G. Lammers, Ralph W. Wilkerson, Fikret ErçAl

Computer Science Technical Reports

In creating digital maps from paper maps, the paper map must first be scanned to produce a raster image, and then converted into vector format. Vector format allows non-graphical cartographic information to be stored along with the graphical objects. At the United States Geological Survey, the conversion from raster to vector format is performed by a commercial software package. The package also attempts to classify the graphical objects based on shape, line patterns, and other information gained from the raster file. Since the package frequently fails to classify a significant percentage of the elements in the map, manual map analysis …

A Novel Technique For Studying The Shear Elastic Properties Of Weak Solids, Jason A. Payne '93 May 1993

A Novel Technique For Studying The Shear Elastic Properties Of Weak Solids, Jason A. Payne '93

Honors Projects

We have developed a simple, inexpensive, and precise technique to measure the shear elastic modulus of weak solids using electromagnetic and optical tools. This technique can be easily adapted to measure the viscosity of a liquid also. A Helmholtz pair was used to produce a torque on a permanent magnet mounted on the smaller of two concentric cylinders, coupled by the material to be studied. The torque was controlled precisely and measured accurately in terms of the current flowing through the coils of the Helmholtz pair. An optical lever was employed to measure the angular displacement of the inner cylinder …

Age Determination Of Recent Cave Deposits Using Excess 210Pb - A New Technique, M. Baskaran, Thomas M. Iliffe Apr 1993

Age Determination Of Recent Cave Deposits Using Excess 210Pb - A New Technique, M. Baskaran, Thomas M. Iliffe

Environmental Science and Geology Faculty Research Publications

Cave deposits have been widely used as proxy recorders in deciphering palaeoclimate during the last glacial/interglacial maxima (∼ 120 ka) [Harmon et al., 1975; Atkinson et al., 1978; Goede and Harmon, 1983; Ayliffe and Veeh, 1989]. Palaeoclimatic studies of cave deposits for the past 1–1000 yr time scale require a precise dating technique, that until now has been lacking. Due to the multiple sources of carbon in speleothems, 14C dates obtained for recently deposited calcite are highly variable and thus, 14C dating techniques are not suitable to obtain speleothem ages for the past 1–1000 years.

Here, we show …

Preliminary Public Health Assessment: Petrochem Recycling Corporation/Ekotek Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, Agency For Toxic Substances And Disease Registry, Divisoin Of Health Assessment And Consultation

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The Petrochem/EkoTek site was operated by several owners as a refinery from 1953 until 1978 and as a hazardous waste storage treatment facility and a petroleum recycling facility from 1978 through 1988. Removal of essentially all petroleum products and hazardous wastes in tanks and drums was accomplished from 1988 - 1991. The process that will lead to the complete clean-up of the facility is ongoing. The site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL) in October 1992. Exposure of humans to contaminants in soil and air is thought to have occurred near Petrochem. The source(s) of those contaminants in …

Filtered Noise Can Mimic Low-Dimensional Chaotic Attractors, P. E. Rapp, Alfonso M. Albano, T. I. Schmah, L. A. Farwell Apr 1993

Filtered Noise Can Mimic Low-Dimensional Chaotic Attractors, P. E. Rapp, Alfonso M. Albano, T. I. Schmah, L. A. Farwell

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

This contribution presents four results. First, calculations indicate that when examined by the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm alone, filtered noise can mimic low-dimensional chaotic attractors. Given the ubiquity Of signal filtering in experimental investigations, this is potentially important. Second, a criterion is derived which provides an estimate of the minimum data accuracy needed to resolve the dimension of an attractor. Third, it is shown that a criterion derived by Eckmann and Ruelle [Physica D 56, 185 (1992)] to estimate the minimum number of data points required in a Grassberger-Procaccia calculation can be used to provide a further check on these dimension estimates. …

Peroxyoxalate Chemiluminescence And Capillary Electrophoresis : New Methods For Bioanalytical Chemistry, Nian Wu Apr 1993

Peroxyoxalate Chemiluminescence And Capillary Electrophoresis : New Methods For Bioanalytical Chemistry, Nian Wu

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The general research objectives lie in the development of new approaches to improve chemical analysis in the area of bioanalytical chemistry. More specifically this thesis is focused on the development and application of new methodologies and instrumentation involving two potentially powerful techniques: 1) Chemiluminescence-a spectroscopic technique in which the generation of fluorescence from the electronically excited state of the molecule is provided by a chemical reaction and 2) Capillary electrophoresis-a separation technique in which small ions as well as large biomolecules can be separated with high efficiency within a narrow capillary under the influence of high voltage.

Modeling Nutrient And Plankton Processes In The California Coastal Transition Zone, John Roland Moisan Apr 1993

Modeling Nutrient And Plankton Processes In The California Coastal Transition Zone, John Roland Moisan

OES Theses and Dissertations

Two time- and space-dependent, physical-bio-optical models have been developed for the California Coastal Transition Zone (CTZ) region with the overall objective of understanding and quantifying the processes th at contribute to the spatial and temporal development of nutrient and plankton distributions in the CTZ. The first of these models considers only time- and vertical processes at specific locations in the CTZ. The model food web components include: silicate, nitrate, ammonium, two phytoplankton size fractions, copepods, doliolids, euphausiids and a detritus pool. The wavelength dependent attenuation of the subsurface irradiance field, due to sea water, phytoplankton pigment concentrations and dissolved organic …

Lithofacies Of The Pliocene-Pleistocene Lucayan Limestone, Great Abaco Island, Little Bahama Bank, Mary K. Mullen Apr 1993

Lithofacies Of The Pliocene-Pleistocene Lucayan Limestone, Great Abaco Island, Little Bahama Bank, Mary K. Mullen

OES Theses and Dissertations

Petrographic and sedimentologic analyses of eleven shallow subsurface cores (3 to 19 meters in length) from the Lucayan Limestone where it occurs along northeastern Great Abaco Island (little Bahama Bank) are used to delineate five carbonate lithofacies. The most prevalent lithofacies is a mottled, nonskeletal, peloidal packstone to grainstone. Other lithofacies include a rudstone, a laminated nonskeletal grainstone, a crossbedded grainstone and a mudstone-wackestone.

Cementation varies from poor to very well cemented core intervals. Cements observed included equant granular, equant blocky, drusy, meniscus, and needle fiber "whisker" cements. These cements reflect a variety of diagenetic environments such as the vadose, …

Recent Benthic Foraminifera, Petrology, And Implications For Recent Transport In Wilmington And South Heyes Submarine Canyons, U.S. Atlantic Continental Margin, Jason James Lundquist

OES Theses and Dissertations

Two hundred and forty-six species of benthic foraminifera have been recognized in fourteen short cores (≤ 24cm) taken from within the Wilmington and South Heyes submarine canyons along the slope and rise of the United States Atlantic Continental Margin. Of these one hundred and forty-five species were identified to the species level, thirty were closely related to known species, sixty-six could not be assigned specific names, and five species were of uncertain generic placement. The petrologic character of the sediments was determined for each of the seventy-eight micropaleontogical samples.

Cluster analysis of benthic foraminiferal data identified twelve groups which, together …

Paleocene To Miocene Foraminifera From A Well Near Gloucester, Virginia, Nelson Stanley Ford Apr 1993

Paleocene To Miocene Foraminifera From A Well Near Gloucester, Virginia, Nelson Stanley Ford

OES Theses and Dissertations

Lithologic analysis of twenty-one core samples from a well near Gloucester, Virginia, when compared to published descriptions of formations occurring in the study area, indicates the presence of five formations. From oldest to youngest these units are the Aquia (late Paleocene), Nanjemoy (early Eocene), Chickahominy (late Eocene), Old Church (late Oligocene and early Miocene), and Eastover (late Miocene) formations. Comparison of the stratigraphic ranges of key planktic and benthic foraminifera from each of the core samples shows chronological agreement with previously published ages for each of these formations.

Paleoenvironmental analysis of each of the formations in the well is based …

Electron Microscopy Study Of Magnetosomes In Two Cultured Vibrioid Magnetotactic Bacteria, Fiona C. Meldrum, Stephen Mann, Brigid R. Heywood, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski Mar 1993

Electron Microscopy Study Of Magnetosomes In Two Cultured Vibrioid Magnetotactic Bacteria, Fiona C. Meldrum, Stephen Mann, Brigid R. Heywood, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski

Physics

Magnetite (Fe304) crystals produced by two strains of cultured vibrioid magnetotactic bacteria were studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Both magnetotactic strains were characterized by single chains of magnetite crystals aligned along the long axes of the cells. The strains, designated as MV-2 and MV-4, produced crystals that differed markedly in size and morphology. Crystals present in MV-4 cells were generally larger than those in MV-2 cells and displayed significantly smaller aspect ratios. Crystallographic analysis of the magnetosomes of MV-2 revealed an elongated hexagonal habit based on a prism of {110} faces capped by {111} …

Electron Microscopy Study Of Magnetosomes In A Cultured Coccoid Magnetotactic Bacterium, Fiona C. Meldrum, Stephen Mann, Brigid R. Heywood, Richard B. Frankel, D. A. Bazyllinski Mar 1993

Electron Microscopy Study Of Magnetosomes In A Cultured Coccoid Magnetotactic Bacterium, Fiona C. Meldrum, Stephen Mann, Brigid R. Heywood, Richard B. Frankel, D. A. Bazyllinski

Physics

Intracellular magnetite (Fe3O4) crystals produced by the magnetotactic bacterium MC-1 were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Strain MC-1 represents the first-reported isolation of a coccoid magnetotactic bacterium in axenic culture. The magnetosomes of this bacterium displayed a pseudo-hexagonal prismatic habit, were elongated along the crystallographic direction, and were truncated by {111}, {100} and {110} faces. The presence of {111} truncations represents a modification of the magnetosome morphology previously determined for those in other coccoid bacteria. Study of immature crystals produced by strain MC-1 showed that the crystal morphology was controlled even at early stages of …

Influence Of Retardation On The Vibrational Wave Function And Binding Energy Of The Helium Dimer, Fei Luo, Geunsik Kim, George C. Mcbane, Clayton F. Giese, W. Ronald Gentry Mar 1993

Influence Of Retardation On The Vibrational Wave Function And Binding Energy Of The Helium Dimer, Fei Luo, Geunsik Kim, George C. Mcbane, Clayton F. Giese, W. Ronald Gentry

Peer Reviewed Articles

Because of the extremely small binding energy of the helium dimer, the nuclear wave function is delocalized over an extremely large range of separations. One might therefore expect the properties of this extraordinary species to be sensitive to the potential at very large internuclear distances, r, where relativistic corrections to the usual van der Waals interaction may be important. We have estimated the effect of retardation, which changes the r-6 dependence of the potential to r-7 in the limit of large r, and have found that the binding energy and expectation value (r) are …

Relative Effectiveness Of Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz Mar 1993

Relative Effectiveness Of Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

For all one-hit detectors the relative effectiveness of a mixed radiation field may be found as the dose-weighted average of the relative effectiveness of its components, segregated according to the atomic number Z and the energy T. We emphasize that this procedure is incorrect for mammalian cells, whatever the nature of the segregation.

Angular Distributions For Near-Threshold (E,2E) Processes For Li And Mg, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace Mar 1993

Angular Distributions For Near-Threshold (E,2E) Processes For Li And Mg, Cheng Pan, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Distorted-wave calculations of the triply differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of Li and Mg are presented for the coplanar, θ12=π geometry in which the final-state electrons share 2 eV of excess energy equally. Our theoretical approach, described in detail elsewhere [C. Pan and A. F. Starace, Phys. Rev. A 45, 4588 (1992)], employs a partial-wave expansion of initial- and final-state wave functions, treats direct and exchange interactions of initial and final electrons with the target core, and treats the final-state interaction between the two continuum electrons by a screening potential. Li and Mg targets are found to …

Modified Anderson-Darling And Cramer-Von Mises Goodness-Of-Fit Tests For The Normal Distribution, David A. Gwinn Sr. Mar 1993

Modified Anderson-Darling And Cramer-Von Mises Goodness-Of-Fit Tests For The Normal Distribution, David A. Gwinn Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

New techniques for calculating goodness-of-fit statistics for normal distributions with parameters estimated from the sample are investigated. Samples are generated for a Normal(0,1) distribution. Critical values are calculated for five modifications to the Anderson-Darling statistic and five modifications to the Cramer-Von Mises statistic. An extensive power study is done to test the power of the new statistics versus the power of the unmodified statistics. Powers of six of the new statistics show minimal to no improvement, two of the new statistics show a marked decrease in power, and two of the new statistics show an overall increase in power over …

Design And Performance Evaluation Of A Gas Chromatograph Micromachined In A Single Crystal Silicon Substrate, Rocky R. Reston Mar 1993

Design And Performance Evaluation Of A Gas Chromatograph Micromachined In A Single Crystal Silicon Substrate, Rocky R. Reston

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation designed and developed a miniature gas chromatograph (GC) using silicon micromachining techniques. The GC is composed of a miniature sample injector (10 µl sample loop); a 0.9 m long, rectangular-shaped (300 µm width and 10 micrometers height) capillary column coated with a 0.2 µm thick copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) stationary phase; and a dual-detector scheme incorporating a CuPc-coated chemiresistor and a 125 µm diameter thermal conductivity detector bead. Micromachining was employed to fabricate the sample injector interface, the GC column, and the dual-detector cavity. A novel processing technique was developed to sublime the CuPc stationary phase coating on the …
