Blackwater rivers are named due to their exceptionally high concentrations of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM). They are the predominant lotic ecosystem in the United States Southeastern Coastal Plain, a region experiencing some of the nation’s highest rates of development. This study assessed variability in DOM concentration and composition across forested to urbanized blackwater systems in coastal South Carolina, U.S. Dissolved organic carbon and nutrient concentrations as well as absorbance and fluorescence optical properties reveal that urban sites have lower concentrations, elemental ratios, and less complex DOM. In contrast, forested blackwater sites have concentrations an order of magnitude higher, elevated …

This study develops a surrogate-based method to assess the uncertainty within a convective permitting integrated modeling system of the Great Lakes region, arising from interacting physics parameterizations across the lake, atmosphere, and land surface. Perturbed physics ensembles of the model during the 2018 summer are used to train a neural network surrogate model to predict lake surface temperature (LST) and near-surface air temperature (T2m). Average physics uncertainties are determined to be 1.5°C for LST and T2m over land, and 1.9°C for T2m over lake, but these have significant spatiotemporal variations. We find that atmospheric physics parameterizations alone are the dominant …

Modeling Covid-19 Spread And Effects Of Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions On A College Campus, Jakob Kotas, Priscilla Perey Ratonel
CODEE Journal
We consider an extension to the classical SIR compartmental model from mathematical epidemiology as applied to the spread of COVID-19 on a college campus. While the classical SIR model does not allow for recovered individuals to lose immunity, we alter the equations to allow for such (due to the rise of new variants), leading to a SIRS-type model. We study the system of ODEs analytically and through numerical simulation. Finally we discuss a quantitative approach for how college administrators can decide when to implement stricter non-pharmaceutical interventions (social distancing, mask mandates, quarantine, etc.) to eradicate the infection from the campus …

Multiple Hypothesis Testing Under Dependence, Nabaneet Das
Multiple Hypothesis Testing Under Dependence, Nabaneet Das
Doctoral Theses
We have examined various aspects of multiple hypothesis testing under dependence. Traditional algorithms designed to control the error arising from multiplicity become severely conservative when the hypotheses exhibit positive dependence, resulting in a loss of power. There is a paucity of literature explicating the behaviour of traditional algorithms when the hypotheses are dependent. In the realm of multiple testing, a popular multiplicity correction is the Bonferroni correction, which is perhaps the oldest classical approach for controlling the Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER) at a desired level, regardless of dependence among hypotheses. However, under the global null and equicorrelated normal model, the …
The Metaphysics Of Time Within Physics, Mohamed Ahmed
The Metaphysics Of Time Within Physics, Mohamed Ahmed
Theses and Dissertations
The starting point of this thesis is to shed some light on the metaphysical nature of time by reflecting on the physics of time. The aim of this approach is not to [dis]prove or defend a metaphysical position but rather to elucidate the metaphysical position that underlies [or is compatible with] our best scientific theories. This task will be demanding, not only because our best theories may carry different interpretations of their underlying temporal structure but also because there seems to be a conceptual conflict/incompatibility between the notion of time in relativity and quantum mechanics, which are the two major …

After abdominal surgery, there is a possibility of adhesions between the abdominal organs and the abdominal wall. Theadhesions can lead to problems such as chronic pain, intestinal blockage, and infertility. To prevent adhesion, antiadhesion patchescan be used. In this study, poly hydroxybutyrate-co-hexanoate membranes were fabricated as antiadhesion patches and modified witheither fatty acids or polyethylene glycol. The homogeneity and protein absorption of the membranes were assessed. The effects onblood coagulation factors were determined and the adhesion-proliferation properties of human fibroblast cells on the membranes weredetermined. The results show that myristic acid slightly increases surface free energy (40.7 ± 4.2 mN/m), …

In whole-rock geochemical analysis, the quantification of aluminum in geological samples is performed using differentanalytical techniques including UV-Vis spectrophotometry. During the spectrophotometric analysis of aluminum utilizing AlizarinRed S, iron causes significant interference, leading to inaccurate measurements of the amount of aluminum in the sample. In caseswhere leached or processed samples contain titanium, interference is also observed. However, appropriate masking agents can removethese interferences. In this study, various masking agents including Tiron, oxalic acid, ascorbic acid, and thioglycolic acid were utilizedfor the masking of iron. Among these masking agents, ascorbic acid proved to be the best candidate for masking iron. A …

A New Water-Soluble Silicon Phthalocyanine That Catalyzes The Photodegradation Of Pollutant Dyes, Damla Nur Kaya, Behi̇ce Sebnem Sesalan
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
The removal of color arising from water-soluble dyes in wastewaters is necessary to counter the threat to health. Because of thedifficulty in elimination of these dyes by conventional methods, their photodegradation using photosensitizers such as phthalocyanines(Pcs) has been employed recently. When compared to peripherally substituted derivatives, silicon Pcs are reported to be morebiocompatible with low toxicity. Thus a new silicon Pc substituted with two quaternized dimethylamino phenoxy units (compound 1)and its quaternized derivative (compound 2) were synthesized to test its photocatalytic ability employing the dyes methylene blue (MB),eosin B (EB), erythrosine (ERB), sulforhodamine B (SRB), and brilliant blue FCF (BRB), …

Modelling The Behavior Of Human Crowds As Coupled Active-Passive Dynamics Of Interacting Particle Systems, Thoa Thieu, Roderick Melnik
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The modelling of human crowd behaviors offers many challenging questions to science in general. Specifically, the social human behavior consists of many physiological and psychological processes which are still largely unknown. To model reliably such human crowd systems with complex social interactions, stochastic tools play an important role for the setting of mathematical formulations of the problems. In this work, using the description based on an exclusion principle, we study a statistical-mechanics-based lattice gas model for active-passive population dynamics with an application to human crowd behaviors. We provide representative numerical examples for the evacuation dynamics of human crowds, where the …

Adapting Biological Mechanisms Into Machine Learning Structures And Gradient Propagation, Hao Yu
Theses and Dissertations
As neuromorphic computing gains traction, researchers look for learning schemes that are more suitable for brain-like structures. Although many algorithms have been discovered, such as surrogate gradient or Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity, those algorithms are either unsuitable for on-chip training or not biologically aligned. The goal of this thesis is to discover a learning algorithm which is biologically aligned and suitable for on-chip training. Through the discoveries of our two papers, we are able to introduce the concepts of synaptic clefts and neurotransmitters into a common spiking neuron network. We also designed an error propagation method aligning with biology. With …

Chemical separations are costly in terms of energy, time, and money. Separation methods are optimized with inefficient trial-and-error approaches that lack insight into the molecular dynamics that lead to the success or failure of a separation and, hence, ways to improve the process. We perform super-resolution imaging of fluorescent analytes in five different commercial liquid chromatography materials. Unexpectedly, we observe that chemical functionalization can block more than 50% of the material’s porous interior, rendering it inaccessible to small-molecule analytes. Only in situ imaging unveils the inaccessibility when compared to the industry-accepted ex situ characterization methods. Selectively removing some of the …

Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction serves as an example of the nonlinear chemical oscillator in which the reacting substance undergoes sequential oxidation and reduction. A droplet containing the BZ reaction, when placed within the oily environment, can self-propel. In this experimental work, we explore the effect of oil medium density on the BZ reaction droplet dynamics. In an oil medium with lower density, the BZ droplet exhibits higher speed and effective diffusivity but a shorter lifetime. Both the distance and speed of the droplet initially increase with droplet volume. However, beyond a critical volume, the distance decreases while the speed stays constant. Interestingly, …
