Geochemistry Of Crusts In Palaeontological Deposits, Taphonomic Settings In An Upper Pleistocene Cave Site (San Teodoro, Sicily), Gerlando Vita, Luca Sineo, Francesco Armetta, Maria Luisa Saladino

International Journal of Speleology

The mineralogical and geochemical composition of cave sediments provides crucial insights into past climatic and biological dynamics. This study investigates the authigenic crusts of San Teodoro Cave (Sicily), a key Upper Pleistocene palaeontological site, through a multi-analytical approach. The cave hosts two superimposed phosphatic crusts, separated by sterile sediment, reflecting shifts in depositional and post-depositional conditions. Our analyses reveal a complex mineral assemblage consisting of calcite, aragonite, and various phosphate phases. Calcite is the dominant phase in the older crust, whereas the presence of aragonite in the younger brown crust likely indicates periods of increased aridity, potentially corresponding to conditions during …

Influence Of Plasticizer Type On The Structure And Drug Release Characteristics Of Lm-Pectin Hydrogels, Banu Kocaağa, Fatma Seni̇ha Güner

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

This study investigated the effects of different plasticizers—castor oil (CO), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and polyethylene glycol (PEG) with varying molecular weights (MWs)—on the structure and drug-release performance of low-methoxyl pectin (LM-pectin) hydrogels. Theophylline was used as a model drug to evaluate release behavior under physiologically relevant conditions. The incorporation of plasticizers modulated polymer–polymer interactions, swelling behavior, and thermal properties, thereby affecting drug-release kinetics. CO, a hydrophobic triglyceride, created microdomain-induced diffusion pathways; PVP, containing water-affinitive lactam units, facilitated moisture-driven plasticization; and PEG (MW 400/1000/1500), with hydroxyl-terminated chains, established hydrogen bonds with pectin. Structural analyses (FTIR and DSC) revealed that CO disrupted pectin …

Characteristics And Mechanisms Of Guar Gum Degradation By Indigenous Bacteria In Coal Seams, Li Bing, Guo Hongyu, Zhou Xiao, Wang Haichao, Jian Kuo, Chen Zhaoying, Zhang Bin

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background Hydraulic fracturing serves as a stimulation technique extensively used in the commercial development of coalbed methane (CBM), in which guar gum is commonly used as a fracturing fluid thickener. However, under the low-temperature conditions of coal reservoirs, conventional chemical gel-breaking methods often suffer from incomplete gel breaking and high residue content, resulting in formation damage and a decrease in the production efficiency of CBM wells. Methods Using indigenous bacteria in coal seams as functional strains, this study conducted microbial gel-breaking experiments. It systematically investigated the characteristics of guar gum biodegradation by these bacteria and determined the dominant microbial taxa …

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

Accurate identification of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)-related cellular characteristics from microscopy images is essential for understanding neurodegenerative mechanisms at the cellular level. While most computational approaches focus on macroscopic neuroimaging modalities, cell type classification from microscopy remains relatively underexplored. In this study, we propose a hybrid vision transformer–convolutional neural network (ViT–CNN) framework that integrates DeiT-Small and EfficientNet-B7 to classify three AD-related cell types—astrocytes, cortical neurons, and SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells—from phase-contrast microscopy images. We perform a comparative evaluation against conventional CNN architectures (DenseNet, ResNet, InceptionNet, and MobileNet) and prompt-based multimodal vision–language models (GPT-5, GPT-4o, and Gemini 2.5-Flash) using zero-shot, few-shot, and chain-of-thought …

Accurate monitoring of Chlorophyll-a (Chla) is critical for assessing aquatic ecosystem health, yet ecological complexity often leads to ambiguous spectral signatures in satellite data. Traditional deterministic models assume a one-to-one mapping between spectra and pigments, often failing to capture these high-dimensional analytical challenges. In this study, we propose a novel deep learning architecture, the Channel Attention-Mixture Density Network (CA-MDN), to retrieve Chla from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) hyperspectral mission. The CA-MDN integrates an attention mechanism to dynamically select ecologically relevant spectral bands and employs a probabilistic output layer to quantify …

A Coupled Fractional Thermistor System Demonstrating Existence, Uniqueness, And Simulation Results With Two-Point Boundary Conditions, Yahia Awad, Angela Khattar, Hussein Fakih, Sami Hammoud, Karim Amin

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

This paper studies a coupled system of Caputo fractional differential equations of orders $\alpha, \beta\in(1,2]$, subject to two-point boundary conditions. The model incorporates nonlinear nonlocal integral terms that capture the memory-dependent interactions between thermal and electrical dynamics in thermistor materials. We rigorously establish existence via Schaefer’s fixed-point theorem and uniqueness through Banach’s contraction principle in a Banach space of continuous and continuously differentiable functions. Additionally, we analyze Ulam–Hyers stability to quantify solution sensitivity to initial perturbations. A numerical example highlights the effects of fractional orders and nonlocal feedback on system behavior. This work generalizes classical thermistor models and provides a …

Monitoring Strategies In Cave Microclimate Studies, Nenad Buzjak, Dalibor Paar, Aurel Persoiu, Christos Pennos, Franci Gabrovšek, Valerija Rossi

International Journal of Speleology

Cave atmospheres are spatially confined but dynamical systems that influence subterranean ecosystems, geomorphological processes, registration and preservation of climatic signals in sedimentary archives, cultural heritage, and conservation management. Despite major advances in cave climatology, methodological approaches to microclimate monitoring remain fragmented and are in some cases still shaped by the long-standing assumption that cave air temperature simply reflects the mean annual surface temperature. This paper revisits that assumption and develops an experience- and literature-based methodological framework for cave microclimate research. Key terminology is addressed by distinguishing between cave climate, cave microclimate, and cave meteorology, and by situating microclimatic variability within …

The MERS-CoV (Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus) is a zoonotic virus with a high mortality rate and a lack of antiviral drugs, underscoring the need for effective therapeutic methods. Viral entry depends on interactions between viral surface proteins and human receptors, with Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP4), a transmembrane glycoprotein, acting as the receptor for MERS-CoV. We employed Molecular Dynamics (MD) Simulations to identify critical interface residues under a high-performance computing (HPC) workflow for accelerated results. Target residue pairs were identified through analysis of salt bridge and hydrogen bond occupancy. The stability of these residues was confirmed through three independent MD Simulations …

Protecting ‘Punks’: The Shortcomings Of The Prison Rape Elimination Act, Rachel Goldsmith Feb 2026

Protecting ‘Punks’: The Shortcomings Of The Prison Rape Elimination Act, Rachel Goldsmith

Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal

Prisoner-on-prisoner sexual abuse is widespread in US male prisons, with inmates “turning each other out” by sexually assaulting each other. While the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) received unanimous support in Congress in 2003, motivated by the Human Rights Watch Report “No Escape: Male Rape in Prisons,” scholars argue that the PREA fails to protect prisoners from prison rape: for example, its standards may be ineffective or criminalize consensual sex between prisoners. This essay will examine the shortcomings of the PREA, drawing on current legal scholarship, and propose solutions to enhance the law's effectiveness in protecting prisoners. The US government …

Te self-assembly of enzyme proteins on 2D nanomaterials has enabled the construction and functional control of viable biochemical pathways. However, enzymatic cascades, which combine essential components of the photosynthetic and respiratory electron transport chains in tandem, have thus-far remained elusive. Herein, we have investigated a galvanic biohybrid nano system coupling photosystem I and cytochrome c oxidase on the surface of graphene oxide nanosheets in colloidal suspension. Te oriented immobilization of the enzymes was facilitated by Ni-coordination sites tethered to the carbon basal plane, with negligible parasitic O2 consumption. Transient absorption and electrochemical measurements provided evidence of electron transfer between donors …

Effects Of Varying Ph, Temperature, And Sucrose Concentration On The Activity Of Invertase Enzyme, B. Rainwater, S. Pratihar

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The purpose of this research is to study the factors that affect the enzymatic activity of invertase, extracted from baker’s yeast, on hydrolysis of sucrose in aqueous medium. Invertase, a glycoprotein, is an enzyme in the glycoside hydrolase family. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of sucrose producing equimolar mixture of a-D-glucose and b-D-fructose. Invertase shows high affinity for the substrate, and is capable of both cleaving the glycosidic linkage in sucrose and transferring ab-D-O-fructofuranoside residue to an acceptor substrate. (Toledo et al. 2019). A detailed mechanism of the action of invertase was postulated by Shall et al. (Shall et al. 1971). …

Development Of An Artificial Immune System Based Intruder Detection Algorithm For Comparison With A Novel Intruder Detection Strategy., Jaden Caradine

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

"This project aims to develop an Artificial Immune System inspired intruder detection system based on current state-of-the-art strategies. Traditional intruder detection systems are not equipped to handle the evolving landscape of cyber security. Signature based detection systems require a database of known signatures and traditional anomaly detection systems are plagued with false positives. By contrast, Artificial Immune Systems can respond to threats never encountered. They are adaptive, proactive, and resilient to interference. This makes them ideal for determining when a system is behaving abnormally. Researchers are developing a novel intruder detection system, but they need a baseline to compare it …

Investigation Of Biofilm Formation And Osmotic Stress Tolerance Of Nonmotile E. Coli Mg1655 In Simulated Microgravity, Tyler Jenkins

Student Research Symposium (SRS)

Simulated microgravity presents multiple physiological stressors for astronauts, including bone demineralization, muscle loss, and weakening of the immune system (Chavez et al., 2024). Bacteria serve as viable model organisms to study physiological changes because of their abundance in the human digestive system and skin. Motility in bacteria plays a significant role in cell survival, but few studies have been conducted on microgravity’s effect on motility phenotypes. While motile strains like K12 have been studied extensively under microgravity conditions (Topolski et al., 2022; Chavez et al., 2024), the effects of simulated microgravity on non-motile strains are largely unknown. To better understand …

Soil salinity is a major constraint on global crop productivity, driving the need for salt-tolerant varieties. While CRISPR-Cas genome editing offers targeted solutions for trait improvement, significant biological and technical bottlenecks limit its application in conferring salt stress resilience. This systematic summarizes findings from 83 peer-reviewed studies (2015–2024) employing CRISPR/Cas technologies to improve salt tolerance in five major crops (rice, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley). Our systematic review reveals that early single-gene edits achieved modest gains (30–50% Na⁺ exclusion) but often showed limited yield gains in field settings, potentially due to compensatory regulation and environmental variation. The literature suggests that multiplex …

Improving Ground Cover Crop Fractional Vegetation Mapping Via Causality-Based Deep Representation Learning, Atif Latif, Masoumeh Hashemi, Matt Yost, Somayeh Esmaeili, Xiaojun Qi

Computer Science Student Research

Semantic segmentation and deep learning methods have rarely been applied to fractional vegetation cover (FVC) segmentation tasks due to the lack of publicly available datasets for training deep learning models. FVC is a key indicator for assessing vegetation distribution, crop density, and crop responses to water availability and fertilizer application, yet conventional field-based measurement methods are time consuming, costly, labor intensive, and may lack the accuracy required for critical applications such as drought stress evaluation and water productivity. In this paper, we introduced causality-based deep learning techniques for FVC segmentation on a publicly available RGB dataset that consists of four …

Poa annua L. is a widespread and persistent weed in managed turfgrass systems, exhibiting both annual and short-lived perennial growth habits. Effective management requires an integrated approach, with chemical herbicides remaining a primary tool. This review outlines the current landscape of chemical control strategies, including pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide options, plant growth regulators, and emerging chemistries. Herbicide resistance in Poa annua continues to pose a significant challenge, with confirmed cases spanning multiple modes of action. Consequently, sustainable management depends on rotating herbicide classes, using mixtures and sequences of treatments, and integrating nonchemical tactics.

A Theoretical Investigation Of The Linear And Nonlinear Optical Responses Of Scandium- And Yttrium-Doped (Sub-Nm) Ag And Au Clusters, Munish Sharma, Mukesh Jakhar, Ravindra Pandey, Shashi P. Karna Feb 2026

A Theoretical Investigation Of The Linear And Nonlinear Optical Responses Of Scandium- And Yttrium-Doped (Sub-Nm) Ag And Au Clusters, Munish Sharma, Mukesh Jakhar, Ravindra Pandey, Shashi P. Karna

Michigan Tech Publications

We investigate the linear and nonlinear optical properties of (sub-nm) Ag6 and Au6 clusters doped with Sc and Y using time-dependent density functional theory. Both parent clusters have D3h ground-state geometries but exhibit noticeably different electronic structures; scalar-relativistic corrections in Au6 induce significant s-d hybridization, resulting in larger HOMO-LUMO gaps and reduced one-photon absorption (OPA) cross-sections compared to Ag6. Two-photon absorption (TPA) peaks in the UV region show resonance enhancement via coupling with OPA-active states, with Ag6 having larger cross-sections than Au6. Doping with Sc and Y modifies the optical responses by breaking configurational symmetry and lifting HOMO degeneracies. ScAg5 …

The Structure, Pathogenesis, And Inhibition Of The P53-Mdm2 Pathway, Amanda L. Brown, Xiaoying Lian, Qian Wang

Faculty Publications

The p53 tumor suppressor protein plays a central role in maintaining genomic stability by regulating cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and DNA repair under cellular stress. Mouse double minute 2 (MDM2), an E3 ubiquitin ligase, negatively regulates p53 via direct binding and proteasomal degradation. Overexpression or amplification of MDM2 can disrupt this pathway and promote tumorigenesis, even in cancers with wild-type p53. This review outlines the structural features of MDM2, particularly its N-terminal hydrophobic pocket and C-terminal RING domain, and their roles in p53 regulation. We further examine the pathological effects of MDM2 dysregulation and SNPs linked to increased cancer risk. …

Metal dyshomeostasis, particularly involving Cu2+, is increasingly recognized as a key contributor to amyloid-β (Aβ) aggregation and neurotoxicity in Alzheimer’s disease, motivating the development of chelators capable of selectively disrupting pathogenic metal-Aβ interactions without perturbing essential biological metals. Here, we employ steady-state fluorescence anisotropy as a real-time probe of TAMRA-Aβ1–42 rotational mobility to quantify metal-induced aggregation and its reversibility by two chelators with distinct selectivities: EDTA, a broad-spectrum benchmark, and Ni-bme-dach, a sulfur-rich metallodithiolate with high Cu affinity. Cu2+ induces the most significant increases in anisotropy, consistent with rapid formation of large nanoscale aggregates, while Fe3+ produces moderate aggregation and …
