On The Theory Of Head Waves, Patrick Heelan Jan 1953

On The Theory Of Head Waves, Patrick Heelan

Research Resources

When a combined longitudinal and transverse disturbance, diverging from a localized source, strikes a plane boundary between two solid elastic media, several systems of head waves and second order boundary waves are generated, each associated with grazing incidence of one or the other of the reflected or refracted waves. Associated with grazing incidence of P 1 P2, the refracted P-wave, is the head wave system comprising P1P2P1 (the "refracted wave" of seismic prospectors), and P1P2S1 (a transverse head wave) in the upper medium, and P1P2 …

The Birds Of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, Canada, J. Dewey Soper

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

Riding Mountain National Park is located in southwestern Manitoba within easy reach of important centres of population. From park headquarters at Wasagaming, it is only 140 miles southeast to Winnipeg, 57 miles south to Brandon, 35 miles north to Dauphin, and 102 miles to the International Boundary. Most of the surrounding country is devoted to agriculture.

The total park area approximates 1,148 square miles. Except for restricted tourist areas, it remains in a primitive condition, with unspoiled forests, prairies, streams, and lakes.

Up to the time the area was set aside as a park in 1929, comparatively little was known …

A Survey Of Farm-Game Habitat Restoration Programs In Fifteen States, William H. Marshall Jan 1953

A Survey Of Farm-Game Habitat Restoration Programs In Fifteen States, William H. Marshall

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

For at least twenty years the thinking of wildlife managers has been directed toward the importance of habitat in producing surplus game populations for hunting. The decline or disappearance of game populations - often over considerable areas - following changes in habitat brought about by agricultural, urban, or industrial developments demonstrates clearly the effects of the elimination of desirable habitat. Suitable habitat is basic to the survival of wildlife. Many field observations and experiences, as well as specific data from research, validate this conclusion. Where a harvestable surplus of game cannot be maintained because of changes made by man in …

A Study Of Petroleum Resources, Production And Consumption In The United States And Foreign Countries In Their Relation To Our National Welfare And Security, Ann Frazier Jan 1953

A Study Of Petroleum Resources, Production And Consumption In The United States And Foreign Countries In Their Relation To Our National Welfare And Security, Ann Frazier

Student Scholarship

This document, submitted by Ann Frazier in 1953, presents a comprehensive study of petroleum resources, production, and consumption within the United States and foreign countries, specifically examining their relationship to national welfare and security. The research highlights that while the United States was the world's leading consumer and producer at the time, accounting for over half of global oil production and roughly sixty percent of consumption, its domestic reserves were a waning asset that could not be renewed. The author challenges the alarmist view of imminent exhaustion by distinguishing between proved reserves and total resources, noting that vast quantities of …

A Microcoulometric Study Of Adsorption On The Hydrogen Electrode, Ray Douglas Sothern Jan 1953

A Microcoulometric Study Of Adsorption On The Hydrogen Electrode, Ray Douglas Sothern

Master's Theses

Thie work was begun with the intention of studying the adsorption of organic compounds upon the hydrogen electrode. The fact that certain substances, even when present in extremely low concentration, will poison the electrode with which they are in contact shows clearly that these substances must be strongly adsorbed on the electrode surface. The problem or determining the amount absorbed at various concentration, temperatures, and pressures, however, required a method capable of detecting quantities of adsorbate in the ordor of 10-11 moles.

The Urea Adducts Of Certain Esters Containing Twenty Carbons, Donald Eugene Johnson Jan 1953

The Urea Adducts Of Certain Esters Containing Twenty Carbons, Donald Eugene Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Urea has the interesting and unexpected property of forming solid complexes with many straight-chained organic compounds. So selective is the formation of these complexes with linear aliphatic compounds that it provides a means of separation form the analogous branched and cyclic compounds. Linear esters derived from normal saturated and unsaturated esters give adducts also but not to the same extent. Although many linear aliphatic compounds form adducts, the compounds so formed have varying degrees of stability depending on molecular weight, saturation and the shape of the molecule.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effect of the position …

Thiocyanate Complexes Of Osmium, Craig Albert Townsend Jr. Jan 1953

Thiocyanate Complexes Of Osmium, Craig Albert Townsend Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Osmium is a hard grey brittle metal which scratches glass. It has a melting point of 2700[degree]C, and a specific gravity of 22.4, which is greater than any other known substance. The grey color of osmium resembles the grey color of iron and ruthenium. Osmium was discovered in 1803 by Tennant in the insoluble residue remaining after treating an alloy of the platinum metals with acid.

Osmium occurs in nature alloyed with the other metals of the platinum group. One type of alloy includes all six of the of the platinum metals, osmium, iridium, platinum, ruthernium, rhodium and palladium. Osmium …

Coloring Matter In Camillia Japonica Flowers, Robert James Stoner Jan 1953

Coloring Matter In Camillia Japonica Flowers, Robert James Stoner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The coloring matter in flowers has been used for centuries as a dye. Early man did not know the chemical nature of these coloring matters. Recent investigations have shown that the dark pigments whereas the lighter pigments of flowers are in the anthoxanthin group of pigments. Both of these groups of pigments have a heterocyclic structure. A large number of these pigments have been isolated and identified.

The object of this research was to isolate and identity the coloring matter in the Camillia japonica (Belgian red) flowers. This was done by extracting the pigment with methanol and then crystallizing the …

The Effect Of Cross-Linkage On Internal Diffusion In Dowex-50 Ion Exchange Resin, John Paul Peterson Jr. Jan 1953

The Effect Of Cross-Linkage On Internal Diffusion In Dowex-50 Ion Exchange Resin, John Paul Peterson Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As far back as the time of Aristotle sand filters were used to purify water. However it was not until the time of Thompson and Way (1848), two English agricultural chemists, that the idea of actual exchange of ions was proposed. Ion exchange has been investigated extensively, resulting in applications to softening of water, purification of sugar, separation of compounds, recovery of metals, many pharmaceutical separations and many others.

It has been proposed that the internal diffusion should be related to the internal structure of the ion exchange resin. The object of this research was to measure the internal diffusion …

The Separation Of Ethylene Diamine, Morpholine, And M-Toluidine By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Domenick S. Bruno

Bachelors’ Theses

"No other discovery has exerted as great an influence and widened the .field of investigation of the organic chemist as much as Tswett's discovery. or Chromatographic Adsorption Analysis 1n 1906".

In 1910 Tswett's comprehensive work "Chromophylls in the Plant and Animal World" was published. Tswett's fundamental experiments consisted or extracting the color from dried leaves with petroleum ether. He poured the extract through a compressed column or finely powdered calcium carbonate. The column was attached to a filter flask and the solution drawn through. He found that the apparently homogeneous pigment separated into colored bands along the column as the …

The Sedimentary Petrography Of The Oil And Gas Producing Horizons In Montana, Patrick J. Donahue May 1952

The Sedimentary Petrography Of The Oil And Gas Producing Horizons In Montana, Patrick J. Donahue

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Montana is an excellent oil province, as oil and gas are produced from a wider range of beds in the geologic section than in any other district in the United States. (1,864) Commercial fields have been developed in Ordovician, Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, Jurassic, Lower Cretaceous, and Upper Cretaceous. It is believed that by describing the physical characteristics of the producing horizons, and by placing this information in one compact volume, a better understanding of oil and gas occurrence in Montana may be gained.

The Effect Of Riboflavin, Nicotinic Acid, And Thiamine On The Lipolytic Action Of Pancreatic Lipase, John G. Georgatsos

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer became especially interested in vitamins and enzymes during the course in the chemistry of Nutrition. To a person that has not studied them close enough the enzymes and the vitamins would seem to be miracle substances rather than chemical entities governed by laws. It was during that period that I made up my mind to study the Interrelation existing between the enzymes and the vitamins when the time would come for me to write a thesis. For this reason it is my pleasure to express my deepest appreciation to Dr. John R. Koch, Director of the Chemistry Department …
