The Subjective Nature Of Programming Complexity, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth I. Magel Mar 1982

The Subjective Nature Of Programming Complexity, Daniel G. Mcnicholl, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

One of the more difficult problems confronting software engineers today is the construction of accurate predictive models of the software development process, [21,[8] and [93. It has long been recognized that one of the most essential elements of any successful model of this process is a quantification of the complexity of software systems. During the past several years a great deal of work has been performed by researchers such as Halstead [3], McCab [5], and others in an attempt to develop metrics which adequately capture the complexity of software systems. Yet one very important aspect of software development complexity seems …

A Comparison Of Maternal Behavior In Three Species Of Voles (Microtus Pennsylvania, M. Pinetorum, And M. Ochrogaster) Using A Laboratory System, B. A. Mcguire, M. A. Novak Mar 1982

A Comparison Of Maternal Behavior In Three Species Of Voles (Microtus Pennsylvania, M. Pinetorum, And M. Ochrogaster) Using A Laboratory System, B. A. Mcguire, M. A. Novak

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

A system has been developed to describe and compare the maternal behavior of three species of microtine rodents within a naturalistic environment. The apparatus consists of two Interconnected Plexiglas-based tables with a peat substrate and hay cover. A pregnant female and her mate are placed within the tables, once the female has shown a thirty percent weight gain and pups can be felt by palpating her abdomen. Maternal behavior, as well as male-female interactions and information on pup physical and behavioral development, are recorded daily for twenty-five days immediately following parturition. Unrestricted observation of female behavior during neonatal, pre-weaning and …

A Theory Of Small Program Complexity, Kenneth I. Magel Jan 1982

A Theory Of Small Program Complexity, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Small programs are those which are written and understood by one. person. Large software systems usually consist of many small programs. The complexity of a small program is a prediction of how difficult it would be for someone to understand the program. This complexity depends of three factors: (1) the size and interelationships of the program itself; (2) the size and interelationships of the internal model of the program's purpose held by the person trying to understand the program; and (3) the complexity of the mapping between the model and the program. A theory of small program complexity based on …

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm Jan 1982

Teaching Vertebrate Pest Control: A Challenge To Wildlife Professionals, Robert M. Timm

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Vertebrate pest control deals with wild animals that create health hazards, damage resources, or become a general nuisance. Some people prefer the terms "wildlife damage control" or "animal damage control" because they focus on controlling damage rather than controlling animals. This is an important principle. Vertebrate animals that cause damage often have many positive values. In dealing with these situations our objective should always be to reduce or prevent damage; this does not necessarily require the killing of animals. I use the term "vertebrate pest control" because I believe it is less ambiguous than "damage control." When I call an …

Absolute Theory Of Relativity & Parameterized Special Theory Of Relativity & Noninertial Multirelativity, Florentin Smarandache Jan 1982

Absolute Theory Of Relativity & Parameterized Special Theory Of Relativity & Noninertial Multirelativity, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we present our 1972 hypothesis that there is no speed barrier in the universe and one can construct arbitrary speeds -

thus refuting the speed of light postulate.

While Einstein considered a relative space and relative time but the ultimate speed

of light, we do the opposite: we consider an absolute time and absolute space but no

ultimate speed, and we call it the Absolute Theory of Relativity (ATR). The ATR has no time dilation, no length contraction, no relativity of simultaneity, and no relativistic paradoxes.

We then parameterize Einstein’s thought experiment with atomic clocks,

supposing that …

Energy Impacts Of Water Based Recreation, J. Clair Batty, David A. Bell, E. Bruce Godfrey, Craig Howell, J. Paul Riley, Thomas C. Stoddard Jan 1982

Energy Impacts Of Water Based Recreation, J. Clair Batty, David A. Bell, E. Bruce Godfrey, Craig Howell, J. Paul Riley, Thomas C. Stoddard

Reports

The overall objective of the study reported here was to determine to what extent energy accounting could supplement and/or complement economic benfit/cost analyses of water management projects and to specifically examine the energy impacts of water based recreation. The energy accounting literature was carefully reviewed and an energy accounting methodology applicable to water management was devised. Data pertaining to receation at five reservoirs in Utah were assembled from visitation recoreds and on-site surveys. Energy requirements for site construction, travel to and from the recreation site, and recreation at the site were estimated. It was determined that energy devoted to water …

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero Jan 1982

The Influence Of Salinity On Larval Development And Population Dynamics Of Anopheles Merus Dönitz (Diptera: Culicidae), F. W. Mosha, C. M. Mutero

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Variations in density of adults of Anopheles merus Dön. in Jimbo Village on the Kenya Coast were found to be correlated both with rainfall and with salinity at their breeding sites. Densities started to increase at the beginning of the rains when several breeding sites were formed. This was followed by a decline in numbers resulting mainly from the decrease in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites. A second rise occurred after the end of the rains, corresponding with an increase in salinity in the semi-permanent breeding sites due to evaporation. Peak density coincided with salinities of 30–50% sea water …

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial Jan 1982

Extensions, Generalizations, Characterizations And Testing For Independence Through Infinite Divisibility, Edward Joul Danial

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation investigates various related topics around the exciting concept: "Infinite Divisibility." First, two intricate distributions, namely, the univariate generalized Waring and the hyper-Poisson are proved to be infinitely and noninfinitely divisible, respectively. Analysis and computer approaches are employed. This itself extends the use of some results introduced by Katti, Steutel and Warde. Secondly, generalizations to Warde, Katti and Steutel's sufficient conditions and related results are achieved. Then, numerical application is presented. Thirdly, characterizations through infinite and finite divisibility are obtained. The Poisson, negative binomial, geometric, Bernoulli and uniform c haracterizations in terms of infinite divisibility are deduced. Some of …

Outwitting The House Sparrow [Passer Domesticus (Linnaeus)], William D. Fitzwater Oct 1981

Outwitting The House Sparrow [Passer Domesticus (Linnaeus)], William D. Fitzwater

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

With the decline of house sparrow populations during the first quarter of this century, control research attention shifted to other avian species so little new is available on either life history studies or management. Solutions to animal damage control problems are generally through (1) environmental controls, (2) protection of crops and/or sites, and (3) population reduction. In the case of sparrow problems, environmental controls are of limited application as the birds prefer the habitat modifications made by man. Protection of crops or sites relies on repellents which are generally ineffective against this particular species. The only viable population level controls …

Mathematics As Rhyme, Vern Poythress Jun 1981

Mathematics As Rhyme, Vern Poythress

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981

Using the analogy between the universe and a choral poem, one may view mathematics as the “rhyme” of the universe. In that perspective new light is thrown on the unique subject matter of mathematics, the a priori character of its truths, and the relation of mathematics to other areas of knowledge. A route is thereby opened for richer use of creativity in mathematics.

Science As Allegory, Vern Poythress Jun 1981

Science As Allegory, Vern Poythress

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1981

The universe is God’s choral poem, and science is a system of allegories within it. That is the thesis that I propose to expound and defend. Yet it is not a “thesis” at all, if the word “thesis” commits me to a certain kind of strict logical defense. I am not putting forward my thesis that science is allegory as the endpoint of a deductive or inductive argument. Rather, it is a springboard for a program of exploration and reflection that turns upside-down some conventional ways of thinking about science.

A Hybrid Metric To Measure Software Complexity, Warren Harrison, Kenneth I. Magel May 1981

A Hybrid Metric To Measure Software Complexity, Warren Harrison, Kenneth I. Magel

Computer Science Technical Reports

Software complexity is an important facet of the software development process, especially in regard to maintenance. A number of complexity metrics have been developed to measure the complexity contributed by: program size, flow of control, data structures, or a combination of two or more of these. Several representative measures from each of these groups are described.

A new hybrid complexity metric, the Extended Scope Metric, is presented and compared with other popular complexity metrics. While the new metric appears to be an improvement over existing metrics due to its enhanced context sensitivity and comprehensiveness, conclusive results cannot be determined until …

Lifestyle As A Determinant Of Participation Among Dispersed Forest Recreationists, John R. Butler May 1981

Lifestyle As A Determinant Of Participation Among Dispersed Forest Recreationists, John R. Butler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study assesses the usefulness of lifestyle as a determinant of outdoor recreation behavior. Two objectives of the study are: (1) develop an operationalized concept of lifestyle that is based on theory, and (2) apply this concept in a model which uses lifestyle as a variable influencing recreation behavior.

The first objective was approached through an integrative review of the literature. Lifestyle was set in context of cultural theory. The basic postulate of the proposed theory of lifestyle is: If an individual's lifestyle is similar to that of another, certain social psychological processes are similar. Therefore, their patterns of needs, …

A System For The Observation Of Voles Under Semi-Natural Conditions With Applications To: Social Interactions, Competition, Food Habits, Habitat Preference And Bait Accpetance., D. S. Wilkie, M. A. Novak

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

A laboratory system to study microtine rodents has been developed that avoids many of the intrinsic restrictions of earlier laboratory and field studies. The system is composed of two interconnected plexiglas tables with a soil substrate and hay cover. The system permits unconstrained visual observation of voles as they move within a runway network of their own construction. The flexibility of the system facilitates its use in various avenues of microtine research.
