A Whole Word And Number Reading Machine Based On Two Dimensional Low Frequency Fourier Transforms, Mark A. O'Hair
A Whole Word And Number Reading Machine Based On Two Dimensional Low Frequency Fourier Transforms, Mark A. O'Hair
Theses and Dissertations
The Fourier transform is investigated as a means for developing an optical reader capable of reading a large vocabulary without segmenting the image of a word into individual characters. The reader is capable of reading printed and cursive font styles, is scale invariant, and is substantially insensitive to noise. The image of a particular word is treated as a single symbol; the two dimensional low frequency Fourier coefficients (assuming n coefficients are calculated) define the word's location on an n dimensional hypersphere of unit radius. The distance between individual locations (words) categorizes similar and dissimilar words. The smaller the distance, …

A Logic For Natural Language, William C. Purdy
A Logic For Natural Language, William C. Purdy
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
This paper describes a language called £N whose structure mirrors that of natural language. £N is characterized by absence of variables and individual constants. Singular predicates assume the role of both individual constants and free variables. The role of bound variables is played by predicate functors called "selection operators." Like natural languages, £N is implicitly many-sorted. £N does not have an identity relation. Its expressive power lies between the predicate calculus without identity and the predicate calculus with identity. The loss in expressiveness relative to the predicate calculus with identity however is not significant. Deduction in £N is intended to …
An Artificial Neural Approach To The Decomposition Problem, Chandrashekar L. Masti
An Artificial Neural Approach To The Decomposition Problem, Chandrashekar L. Masti
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to develop an artificial neural approach toward addressing the intractability involved with the decomposition problem. The search for the lattice of substitution property (s. p.) partitions essential to decompositions is cast into the framework of constraint satisfaction. An artificial neural network is developed to provide solutions by performing optimization of a mathematically derived objective function over the problem space. The issue of transitivity is verified to belong to a class of problems beyond the scope of solvability for conventional quadratic-order constraint satisfaction neural networks. A theorem is stated and proved establishing that third-order correlations …

Coke Oven Emissions: A Case Study Of Technology-Based Regulation, John D. Graham, David R. Holtgrave
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
After examining and analyzing the experience with coke ovens, the authors conclude that attempts to force technology beyond its demonstrated competence can be both expensive and ineffective in controlling hazards. They also suggest implications for pending proposals to further control air pollution.

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
[Excerpt] "An unindexed journal is of little use over the long haul, and many libraries will not subscribe to it. [Of course, we plan to include at least an author and title index in the next issue, but that doesn't count.] Therefore, we were pleased to learn that Risk has been approved by the Indexing Periodical Literature Advisory Committee [One of the few which may not need nonexpert members!] of the American Association of Law Libraries. This means, for example, that Risk will be included in the Current Law Index, Legaltrac, and Legal Resources Index published by Information Access Company."

Visual Protocol Collection For The Enhancement Of The Radiological Diagnostic Process, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin, M. Baron, N. Ezquerra, E. Garcia
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper describes the Observation Phase of a research project that is designed to explore the nature of visual radiological diagnosis. It is concerned with the collection and analysis of visual protocol data in an effort to determine the salient image features that may impact on the different stages of the diagnostic process, both perceptual and cognitive. These features, once identified, will lead to the formulation of image enhancement hypotheses and the development of knowledge-based visualization techniques to assist the radiological diagnostic process.
Input Data Pattern Encoding For Neural Net Algorithms, Hyeoncheol Kim, George Winston Zobrist
Input Data Pattern Encoding For Neural Net Algorithms, Hyeoncheol Kim, George Winston Zobrist
Computer Science Technical Reports
First, a brief overview of neural networks and their applications are described, including the BAM (Bidirectional Associative Memory) model.
A bucket-weight-matrix scheme is proposed, which is a data pattern encoding method that is necessary to transform a set of real-world numbers into neural network state numbers without losing the pattern property the set has. The scheme is designed as a neural net so that it can be combined with other data processing neural nets. The net itself can be used as a bucket-sorting net also. This shows that traditional data structure problems can be an area that neural networks may …
Software Validation Techniques : A Contrast Between Myers' And Hetzel's Techniques, Reyad I. Abukaker
Software Validation Techniques : A Contrast Between Myers' And Hetzel's Techniques, Reyad I. Abukaker
Electronic Dissertations and Theses
This research work presents the contemporary testing methodologies of current state-of-the-art methodologies in software testing. Myers' and Hetzel's methodologies are the primary objectives of this research. The scope of this work is to contrast these two testing methodologies, through looking at their principles as well as their definitions of testing. The two definitions of testing differ substantially. Myers' philosophy deals with human psychology and economics as the primary factors in defining the test plans. Hetzel's philosophy is broad in that it looks at software testing in terms of "meeting requirements." However, Hetzel focuses toward "evaluating" and "measuring" a software system …

Forecasting Sunspot Numbers Using Neural Networks, Ming Li, Kishan Mehrotra, Chilukuri K. Mohan, Sanjay Ranka
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports
A recurrent connectionist network has been designed to model sunspot data. Preliminary experimental work shows that the network can produce competitive results as compared to traditional autoregressive models. The method is not problem specific and could be applied to other problems in dynamical system modeling, recognition, prediction, and control fields. It is observed that statistical methods can be used to design an appropriate neural network architecture.
The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp
The Effect Of Seasonal Cattle Grazing On California Bighorn Sheep Habitat Use, Melanie J. Steinkamp
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of seasonal cattle grazing on a newly reintroduced population of California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana) in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Idaho, was studied. The hypothesis that bighorn sheep avoid cattle was tested. The issue of avoidance between bighorn sheep and livestock is arguable. Some studies have found that bighorn sheep avoid cattle while others have found no response of bighorn sheep to cattle.
Evidence was found to document the avoidance of cattle by bighorn sheep. The size of the bighorn's home range and core area decreased with the movement of cattle into areas of high bighorn …

The Human Element In Wildlife Damage Situations, Ron J. Johnson
The Human Element In Wildlife Damage Situations, Ron J. Johnson
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)
The field of prevention and control of wildlife damage is changing and evolving along with clientele needs, pressures from user and non-user groups, and other factors. A theoretical overview of the field may offer an action model regarding changing trends and potential responses. I propose that three things happen every time a wildlife damage problem occurs: 1) A human activity, desire, or need is interfered with, 2) the experience fosters an opinion about a wild animal - usually negative, and 3) a decision is made to tolerate the situation or to control it. If control is selected, availability and effectiveness …

Differential Toxicity And Taste Aversion To Strychnine Of Three Subspecies Of The California Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus Beecheyi), Walter E. Howard, Stephen D. Palmateer, Rex E. Marsh
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)
Three subspecies of the California ground squirrel (Spermophilus beecheyi) were studied. In the first test of Experiment 1, Beechey (S. b. beecheyi), Douglas (S. b. douglasii), and, for comparative purposes, Sierra (S. b. sierrae) ground squirrels were each offered a drinking tube containing one of three H20 solutions of strychnine sulfate (0.01, 0.05, or 0.5%) after being deprived of water for 23 hr. In Test 2 the survivors of Test 1 were offered for 24 hr a free choice of distilled water and two of the above concentrations of strychnine …
