Genetic Algorithms And Artificial Life, Melanie Mitchell, Stephanie Forrest
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Genetic algorithms are computational models of evolution that play a central role in many artificial-life models. We review the history and current scope of research on genetic algorithms in artificial life, giving illustrative examples in which the genetic algorithm is used to study how learning and evolution interact, and to model ecosystems, immune system, cognitive systems, and social systems. We also outline a number of open questions and future directions for genetic algorithms in artificial-life research

We advance a model of human probability judgment and apply it to the design of an extrapolation algorithm. Such an algorithm examines a person's judgment about the likelihood of various statements and is then able to predict the same person's judgments about new statements. The algorithm is tested against judgments produced by thirty undergraduates asked to assign probabilities to statements about mammals.

Clustering Techniques In Speaker Recognition, Douglas N. Prescott
Clustering Techniques In Speaker Recognition, Douglas N. Prescott
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a comparison based on identification rate, of three clustering techniques applied to cepstral features for speaker identification. LBG vector quantization as developed by Linde, Buzo and Gray; is used to provide benchmark performance for comparison with Fuzzy clustering (based on the unsupervised fuzzy partition-optimal number of classes, UFP-ONC algorithm by Gath and Geva) and an Artificial Neural Network, the Multilayer Perceptron. Cepstral features from the TIMIT, King and AFIT93 corpus speaker databases are used to produce speaker-identification classifiers using each of the clustering algorithms. The experiment reported evaluates the speaker identification performance using the 20-dimensional cepstral features …
Zinc Phosphide: Implications Of Optimal Foraging Theory And Particle-Dose Analyses To Efficacy, Acceptance, Bait Shyness, And Non-Target Hazards, Ray T. Sterner
Zinc Phosphide: Implications Of Optimal Foraging Theory And Particle-Dose Analyses To Efficacy, Acceptance, Bait Shyness, And Non-Target Hazards, Ray T. Sterner
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 16th (1994)
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) maintains six federal registrations for zinc phosphide (Zn3P2); three of these address the control of eight rodent species using steam-rolled oats (SRO) or wheat grains in diverse applications. Optimal foraging theory (OFT) and "particle-dose analysis" (PDA) afford predictions relevant to the efficacy, acceptance, bait shyness, and non-target hazards of these Zn3P2 baits. For PDA, numbers of SRO groats or whole wheat grains associated with acute oral median lethal (LD^) or approximate lethal (ALD) doses of Zn3P2 were compared among nine target rodent and eleven …

The Evolving "Takings" Doctrine: The Supreme Court Poses A Challenge For Coastal Zone Management, Catherine L. Chase
The Evolving "Takings" Doctrine: The Supreme Court Poses A Challenge For Coastal Zone Management, Catherine L. Chase
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
There is an increasingly powerful and vocal group coalescing in society today, sometimes described as anti-environmentalists or Property Firsters, who feel that the government has exceeded its authority in interfering with individual rights for the purpose of protecting natural resources. Regardless of any personal convictions regarding this often emotionally-charged issue, people involved in coastal management and planning should be aware of the changes in legal doctrines which have come about as a result of "property first" challenges to regulatory or zoning statutes. These challenges have been pursued successfully in the courts by characterizing state and local land use ordinances as …

This paper is concerned with the organic derivation and primary meaning of Pleistocene finger flutings; I propose that in order to gain insight into the significance of the flutings, we must attempt an understanding of the physical and mental contexts in which they emerged. I suggest that finger flutings provided a cultural record in the Pleistocene which documented thought and action, and made it ready for reflection. Through the process of finger fluting, the human 'self' was objected and reality was modified in the experience of self-consciuosness. I argue that finger flutings, like language, were employed to discover and convey …

Draft Climbing Management Plan And Environmental Assessment, Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming, United States Department Of The Interior
All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)
The unique geological formation known as Devils Tower annually draws nearly half a million visitors. Most visitors enjoy photographing the butte, hiking area trails, camping, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. A few thousand technical rock climbers annually travel from across the country and the world to scale the butte's nearly vertical cracks and columns. Devils Tower also is a sacred site to several American Indian peoples of the northern plains. Increasingly, American Indian groups travel to the monument to perform traditional cultural practices. Devils Tower is highly regarded as having significant values that make it worthy of inclusion to the National …
Bird Damage At Aquaculture Facilities, W. Paul Gorenzel, Fred S. Conte, Terrell P. Salmon
Bird Damage At Aquaculture Facilities, W. Paul Gorenzel, Fred S. Conte, Terrell P. Salmon
Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook
Reduction of the damage caused by fish-eating birds requires accurate bird identification and some knowledge of avian biology and habits. The open-water areas and large concentrations of aquatic livestock at aquaculture facilities are natural attractants to many birds. Birds can have a significant economic impact on the culture of aquatic products including fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates. For our purpose here, we will refer to these birds as fish-eating birds, and the aquatic products as fish.

Environmental Attitudes And Knowledge: An International Comparison Among Business Students, Raymond Benton Jr., G. Ray Funkhouser
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article investigates international differences in environmental knowledge and attitudes among business administration students. The Environmental Knowledge and Attitude Scale, developed by Maloney, Ward, and Braucht (1975) and used by Synodinos (1990), was administered to 85 upperdivision business administration students at Loyola University Chicago and 111 upperdivision business students at the National University of Singapore. No significant differences were found between the two samples on the Knowledge, Concern, or Willingness to Act subscales. The United States students' higher mean score on the Actual Behavior subscale was significant but may only reflect relative possibilities for participation in environmental activities. Overall, the …

Deer, Scott R. Craven, Scott E. Hygnstrom
Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage Handbook
Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are probably the most widely distributed and best-recognized large mammals in North America. Deer are even-toed ungulates of the family Cervidae. The white-tailed deer is found in every state in the United States except perhaps Alaska and Utah. Deer are creatures of the forest edge rather than the dense, old-growth forest. Browse (leaves, stems, and buds of woody plants) is generally available all year and is a staple food for deer. Breeding occurs from October to January depending on latitude. Deer damage a wide variety of row crops, forage crops, vegetables, fruit trees, nursery stock, …

Relationship Between Information System Project Characteristics And Project Management Activities: An Empirical Investigation, Vijay V. Raghavan, Deepak Khazanchi, Joyce L. Webster
Relationship Between Information System Project Characteristics And Project Management Activities: An Empirical Investigation, Vijay V. Raghavan, Deepak Khazanchi, Joyce L. Webster
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
The activities of a project manager in overseeing the development of a software system are many and varied. Not all such activities are performed in managing every project. If so, a natural ensuing question is whether project managers adapt their managerial functions to the projects being managed. Prior research suggests that they do adapt, and that project characteristics may be the factors determining this adaptation. This assertion is investigated by considering three characteristics of a project (size, type, and environment) and investigating their association with four traditionally recognized management functions (planning, organizing, controlling, and motivating). Results indicate that project managers …
An ‘Events’ Model For Information Aggregation, Douglas Havelka, Deepak Khazanchi
An ‘Events’ Model For Information Aggregation, Douglas Havelka, Deepak Khazanchi
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Aggregation is one of the key characteristics of information delivered by "information systems." It is important because the ability to design effective support systems depends to a great extent upon the degree of flexibility with regards to information aggregation that can be incorporated in the system. This paper sets forth a conceptual model of information aggregation based on the events theory of accounting. The model suggests that aggregation should be considered as a two-dimensional concept, comprising a temporal and sectional dimension. The two axes are further delineated in the form of "levels of summation" based on specified "events" of aggregation. …
An Economic Valuation Of The Jandakot Wetlands, Paul Gerrans
An Economic Valuation Of The Jandakot Wetlands, Paul Gerrans
Research outputs pre 2011
Economists implore the efficient allocation of resources. Paradoxically, where the issue of efficiency has become critically important in recent times, namely the allocation of the environment and its resources and amenity, the techniques of economists have been found wanting and less than fully developed. This paper seeks to address this apparent paradox and deficiency.
This paper provides an economic valuation of the Jandakot wetlands, located to the south of Perth. A referendum style contingent valuation method survey is used to estimate economic value attributable to the preservation of wetlands dependant on the groundwater resource. Event history analysis is explored and …

Visualisation Of Inshore Marine Water Depth Data, Karen Powell
Visualisation Of Inshore Marine Water Depth Data, Karen Powell
Theses : Honours
The literature review performed as part of this Project concentrated on two objectives. The first objective was the identification of techniques applicable to the visualisation of the inshore marine water depth data obtained from the Department of Marine & Harbours (M&H). The second objective involved examining how colour is best used within data visualisation. The experimentation investigated a simple method for interpreting movement between depth surveys undertaken by M&H. Although it achieved the objective of creating a longer and smoother animation, it was concluded that the movement of the harbour floor was not accurately represented. The Project applied an optical …

A Model Of Visual Recognition Implemented Using Neural Networks, Vincent C. Phillips
A Model Of Visual Recognition Implemented Using Neural Networks, Vincent C. Phillips
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The ability to recognise and classify objects in the environment is an important property of biological vision. It is highly desirable that artificial vision systems also have this ability. This thesis documents research into the use of artificial neural networks to implement a prototype model of visual object recognition. The prototype model, describing a computtional architecture, is derived from relevant physiological and psychological data, and attempts to resolve the use of structural decomposition and invariant feature detection. To validate the research a partial implementation of the model has been constructed using multiple neural networks. A linear feed-forward network performs pre-procesing …
