Procedurally Rational Decision-Making And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling
Procedurally Rational Decision-Making And Control, Richard L. Frost, Michael A. Goodrich, Wynn C. Stirling
Faculty Publications
Substantive rationality requires a decision-maker to be a utility maximizer; under this paradigm, the decision is paramount, and not dependent on the computational process used to obtain it. Procedural rationality is dependent on the method used to make the decision; reasonableness of the procedure is paramount. Well-formed problems are amenable to substantive rationality; ill-formed problems are not, but are amenable to procedural rationality. To qualify as being procedurally rational, a methodology must possess a sound epistemological basis, it must be amenable to a formal design synthesis procedure, and it must be consistent with substantive rationality. Epistemic utility theory forms the …

Background Graphics: A Decision-Making Hindrance Or Enhancement?, David L. Peeler Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigated the influence, if any, of background graphics on the decision making process. Specifically the hypotheses tested the affect of background graphics on a decision makers accuracy and confidence. A literature review revealed an abundance of graphic research but little reference to the use of background graphics. Using guidelines previously created for high integrity graphics, a timed 2 x 2 factorial experimental design was developed to compare the responses to both traditional graphics and those treated with background graphics. One hundred forty-seven subjects, all employees of the United States Air Force or defense contractors were involved in the …

Koala: An Object-Agent Design System, Kym J. Pohl, Jens G. Pohl
Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center
This paper describes KOALA, a design system with primary focus on the predesign stage of architectural design. KOALA combines object-agent technology with high level representation to form a partnership between the human designer and the computer-based design environment. A diverse taxonomy of agents including Domain agents. Space agents, and Monitor agents work in a collaborative fashion to provide the human designer with expert evaluation and assistance in developing a design solution. Spaces, in their roles as agents attempt to formulate various design solutions based on individual perspectives through negotiation with other agents. The result is a highly interactive design environment …

Proofreading, editing, and critique, the customary assessment tools scientists use to evaluate professional journal articles, grant applications, and any other writing, can be applied equally well in introductory science instruction. Such feedback is, in fact, crucial to growth and development. When learning anything new, students and faculty alike rely heavily on sources other than themselves (‘external editors’) to assess their understanding as they develop self-assessment skills (or ‘internal editors’). Although they rarely describe it in these terms, faculty nonetheless assume that students have developed and refined their internal skills by the time they take examinations and write term papers. Unfortunately, …

A New Soft Tissue Analysis : To Establish Facial Esthetic Norms In Young Adult Females, Anne Béress
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Two hundred and fifty-five articles, books, and masters theses were reviewed for the most frequently applied soft tissue measurements in the literature in order to develop a new soft tissue analysis computer program that includes established soft tissue measurements and the newly developed globe analysis. A meta analysis of 20 normal occlusion studies, was performed to obtain mean values and standard deviations to form a large sample size. Inclusion criteria for articles in the meta analysis were normal occlusion, no orthodontic treatment, pleasing faces, statement on age, race, and lip position of the population. For the lateral view, angular and …
Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young
Exploring Knowledge Processes For Technology Assimilation, Rochelle K. Young
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In the emerging knowledge society, the ability to make the experience and expertise of those involved in and affected by new technology unconditionally available to all members of an organization is becoming increasingly important. One of the problems in developing such knowledge processes for technology assimilation is that current social structures do not easily accommodate unconditional participation. Since the implementation of modern information technology is changing the workplace and the nature of work itself, alternative social structures are needed. This research takes as given that deep questions concerning knowledge processes and social transformation are in principle undecidable; and, only questions …

Controlling Experiment-Wise Type I Error Of Meta-Analysis In The Solomon Four-Group Design, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky
Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications
Abstract. Stouffer=s Z, a meta-analytic technique, was proposed by W. Braver and Braver (1988) for analyzing data collected from a Solomon Four-group Design. Sawilowsky, Kelley, Blair, and Markman (1994) showed that this technique produces inflated Type I error rates. Recommendations are made to control the false positive inflation of their procedure.

During the last three years at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, we have been working on a partial reconstruction of Whitehead's "one subject matter," a course reconnecting biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, and physics into an Integrated Science program.

Rucker, Rudy Rucker
SWITCH
In this article, Rudy Rucker shares his thoughts on hacking. He summarizes it as normal actions, such as building a car, or kneading clay. He compares hacking to things that are buildable by hand, and views creating computer programs the same way. One of the benefits of creating your own computer programs is that you can customize themn however you want. However customizing software on your own is extremely time consuming. He then goes into further detail about artificial life and how hyperspace works. Hacking bends the cyber reality that we are accustomed to, and modifying programs outside of what …

Adaptive Integration Of Audio And Visual Information Using Discrete And Semi-Continuous Hidden Markov Models In Audiovisual Automatic Speech Recognition, Qin Su
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
An audiovisual semi-continuous hidden Markov model (HMM)-based Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system and an improved method of integrating audio and visual information in an audiovisual discrete HMM-based ASR system are investigated.
In the audiovisual discrete HMM, an adaptive integration formulation is employed, which incorporates the integration into the HMM at a pre-categorical stage. A visual weighting parameter is determined automatically, which allows the relative contribution of audio and visual information to be adjusted adaptively. Using an adaptive weight, the accuracy increased by 13% compared to the same model with no adaptive weight.
The semi-continuous HMM is a class of models …

Collection of 3 papers presented at the Hot Topics in Natural Resources Law program held on March 12, 1996.
Includes biographical information for Wade Buchanan, David A. Pampu, and Christine Lipaj Shaver.
With communities along Colorado's Front Range continuing to grow at a rapid rate, government, private businesses and citizens are faced with difficult choices concerning air quality and transportation. Can we control the "brown cloud" and increasing congestion on our roads and freeways? What decisions and sacrifices must be made, and who will take responsibility for them? Wade Buchanan, Chairman of the Regional Air Quality Council (RAQC), …

Risk Perception And Trust: Challenges For Facility Siting, Howard Kunreuther, Paul Slovic, Donald Macgregor
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
The authors maintain that, by granting legitimacy to different notions of fairness and building on common values such as responsibility, it is possible to design siting procedures that promote social cohesion, trust and a sense of fair play.
