Transport Of Terrigenous Sediment And Horseshoe Crab Eggs In The Swash Zone Of An Estuarine Foreshore In Delaware Bay, New Jersey, Usa, Sherestha Saini
Transport Of Terrigenous Sediment And Horseshoe Crab Eggs In The Swash Zone Of An Estuarine Foreshore In Delaware Bay, New Jersey, Usa, Sherestha Saini
Dissertations
Identification of processes responsible for egg exhumation and transport in the swash zone is paramount to conservation of species that use the intertidal foreshore. One example where the understanding of these processes is critical to egg exhumation, transport and deposition is in Delaware Bay, USA. Beaches in Delaware Bay provide foraging grounds to many shorebird species that migrate thousands of miles from Central and South America to feed on nutrient rich horseshoe crab eggs during their peak spawning season. Eggs laid at depth by horseshoe crabs are exhumed and transported by bioturbation, wave and swash processes and made available to …
Design And Synthesis Studies Of New S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Analogues, Shanshan Wu
Design And Synthesis Studies Of New S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine Analogues, Shanshan Wu
Theses
S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine (SAM), which is involved in methyl group transfers, is the second most abundant coenzyme in the human body. It is made from adenosinetriphosphate (ATP) and methionine catalyzed by adenosyltransferase. Methyltransferases (MTs) transfer the activated methyl group from the sulfur center to a specific position in a variety of substrates, e.g., DNA, RNA, proteins, and secondary metabolites. Methyltransferases have been linked to various diseases, including cancer.
In recent years, more and more SAM analogues have been reported. These analogues show activities in biological target labeling. The purpose of this thesis is to design and synthesize new SAM analogues to inhibit …
Unbiased Estimation For The Contextual Effect Of Duration Of Adolescent Height Growth On Adulthood Obesity And Health Outcomes Via Hierarchical Linear And Nonlinear Models, Robert Carrico
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation has multiple aims in studying hierarchical linear models in biomedical data analysis. In Chapter 1, the novel idea of studying the durations of adolescent growth spurts as a predictor of adulthood obesity is defined, established, and illustrated. The concept of contextual effects modeling is introduced in this first section as we study secular trend of adulthood obesity and how this trend is mitigated by the durations of individual adolescent growth spurts and the secular average length of adolescent growth spurts. It is found that individuals with longer periods of fast height growth in adolescence are more prone to …
Agricultural Efficiency And The End Of The Oil Age; Building A Future Of Longevity, Keith Mchugh
Agricultural Efficiency And The End Of The Oil Age; Building A Future Of Longevity, Keith Mchugh
Pomona Senior Theses
This thesis uses an efficiency analysis of agricultural systems to assert that, in lieu of rising prices of fossil fuel, people need to come into more direct contact with their food systems. With a switch to smaller, more efficient farms that rely less on fossil fuel and are connected with the communities they supply for, we can avoid an energy crisis turning into a famine. These smaller-scale systems can help create self-contained, carbon-neutral communities.

Regimes And Resilience In The Modern Global Food System, Sara W. Tower
Regimes And Resilience In The Modern Global Food System, Sara W. Tower
Student Publications
Much public discourse surrounding the modern global food system operates on the assumption of the primary agency of individual consumers in ensuring an equitable and sustainable food supply. However, this approach fails to account for the larger structural forces of the system which frame the limits of how we interact with and are affected by our food system. Taking a closer look at the global economic, political, cultural, and environmental forces that have collectively shaped historical food regimes reveals the deeper structural patterns that currently determine how we produce, distribute, and consume food around the world. Due to the underlying …

The Analysis Of Protein-Bound Thiocyanate In Plasma Of Smokers And Non-Smokers As A Marker Of Cyanide Exposure, Stephanie L. Youso, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue
The Analysis Of Protein-Bound Thiocyanate In Plasma Of Smokers And Non-Smokers As A Marker Of Cyanide Exposure, Stephanie L. Youso, Gary A. Rockwood, Brian A. Logue
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
When cyanide is introduced into the body, it quickly transforms through a variety of chemical reactions, normally involving sulfur donors, to form more stable chemical species. Depending on the nature of the sulfur donor, cyanide may be transformed into free thiocyanate, the major metabolite of cyanide transformation, 2-amino-2-thiazoline-4-carboxylic acid or protein-bound thiocyanate (PB-SCN) adducts. Because protein adducts are generally stable in biological systems, it has been suggested that PB-SCN may have distinct advantages as a marker of cyanide exposure. In this study, plasma was analyzed from 25 smokers (chronic low-level cyanide exposure group) and 25 non-smokers for PB-SCN. The amount …

A Multi-Modal Sensing And Communication Platform For Continental-Scale Migratory Bird Tracking, David J. Anthony
Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis presents a novel platform for tracking migratory birds on a continental scale. Cellular technology is used to augment the short-range radios that have traditionally been used in wireless sensor networks. The platform utilizes multiple sensors, including a GPS and solid state compass. By using these sensors, the platform is capable of not only tracking a bird’s migration path, but also provides information on a bird’s behavior during its life-cycle. Testing methodology utilizing simulations and aspect-oriented programming is used to reveal faults in the platform prior to deployment on wild animals. In collaboration with the International Crane Foundation, and …
Racemization Of Amino Acids In Teeth For The Determination Of Age, Andrea Lee Toll
Racemization Of Amino Acids In Teeth For The Determination Of Age, Andrea Lee Toll
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Instrumental to forensic investigations is the ability to identify unknown human remains providing key evidence to criminal cases, resolution to missing persons, and assistance in mass or natural disasters. Identification of remains in an effort to determine age is an area of forensics that has received considerable attention. Traditional methods in age determination such as morphology are often biased, antiquated, and frequently result in a large margin of error. Conversely, the emergence of new forensic techniques provide promise to reduce the margin of error in determining age. One such technique has focused on relating the extent of amino acid racemization …

Resource Distribution And The French Revolution, Louan Pagan
Resource Distribution And The French Revolution, Louan Pagan
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Throughout the centuries following the French Revolution (1789 -1799), social scientists and historians have attributed a myriad of causes to the sociopolitical upheaval. Food and beverages played a key role in the coming of French Revolution, for the people were in effect fighting for the right to have nutrition rather than for social or political ideals. Literary analysis of both primary and secondary sources illustrated the integral role of the peasant’s stomach to the uprising. The Enlightenment disillusionment of the royals, rising bread prices, discrepancy in food distribution both within and around Paris, and substandard quality of food, wine, and …
A Comparison Of Moist-Soil Seed Sampling Techniques In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin, Lisa Zilli
A Comparison Of Moist-Soil Seed Sampling Techniques In The Nebraska Rainwater Basin, Lisa Zilli
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Wetland managers sometimes estimate seed production of wetlands managed for migrating waterfowl habitat. Using estimation techniques, managers can determine if wetland plants produce enough seed to support the nutritional needs of migrating waterfowl. Usually, a one-time sampling method is used; this technique samples seeds once a year during peak seed production. However, this technique may underestimate seed production due to plants producing large quantities of seed before or after peak seed production or producing seed throughout the growing season. Season long sampling may be more representative of a wetland’s seed production. We comparing one-time sampling with season- long sampling by …
The Role Of Emotion In Understanding And Promoting Sustainability And Eco-Friendly Behavior, Chevelle Schreiner
The Role Of Emotion In Understanding And Promoting Sustainability And Eco-Friendly Behavior, Chevelle Schreiner
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of empathy and perspective-taking in influencing
environmental concern (Sevilliano, Aragones, & Schultz, 2007) Although there may be a number of internal factors that inhibit pro-environmental behavior, it is important to evaluate the ways by which we can use emotion to encourage this type of behavior. This study was designed to evaluate the impact of emotion on eco-friendly behavior by investigating the effect of viewing high- or low-fear appeals on changing consumers‘ food choices will have on their attitudes and behaviors. Results show that the
likelihood that a participant intended to partake in more pro-environmental behaviors …

Sponsor: Geoffrey Greene, Nutrition and Dietetics
A topic of interest that is growing in the general population is the idea of being sustainable, or “green”, and there is a rising awareness in sustainable practices involving food and the environment. Some of the “green” eating behaviors identified through my research included eating a plant-based (i.e. vegetarian or semi-vegetarian) diet, eating locally grown foods, eating organically grown foods, and eating foods that are labeled fair-trade. Frequently, these “green” eating behaviors are healthful eating behaviors …
Using Landsat Thematic Mapper Satellite Imagery Assessing And Mapping Trophic State In Cheney Reservoir, Kansas, Dingnan Lu
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Eutrophication is a major inland water problem that is researched by many environmentalists and hydrologists. A eutrophic inland water body can cause many negative water problems, such as taste and odor, biotoxin, and low dissolved oxygen. Many previous studies were effective based on using remote sensing to evaluate water body trophic state. In this study, the Cheney Reservoir is selected as an object to test the performance of using remote sensing, specifically the Landsat Thematic Mapper sensor, to evaluate the trophic state of a reservoir. Based on Landsat TM imagery, the chlorophyll a concentration is estimated to be used to …

Chemistry Faculty Publications
In vitro incubation and centrifugation is known to decrease human sperm quality. In the human body, besides its antioxidant effects, l-carnitine (LC) facilitates the transport of activated fatty acids from the cytosol to the mitochondrial matrix. In this study, we investigated the effect of LC on human sperm motility, viability and DNA oxidation after incubation and centrifugation, following the sperm preparation protocols of assisted reproduction. Normozoospermic semen samples (n = 55) were analysed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. LC concentrations that are not toxic to spermatozoa as determined by sperm motility and viability were standardised after 2 …
Spawning, Veliger Growth And Desiccation Of Dreissena Bugensis, Lynn Schwaebe
Spawning, Veliger Growth And Desiccation Of Dreissena Bugensis, Lynn Schwaebe
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Quagga (Dreissena bugensis) mussel veliger growth was compared under two dietary conditions: 1) only seston present in Lake Mead water; and 2) Lake Mead seston plus algae (Isochrysis galbana). Shell length, width, and area were compared as a function of time for the two treatments. It was expected that mussels would exhibit faster growth when supplemented with I. galbana than with Lake Mead water alone. However, no significant difference was observed between the control and I. galbana treatments. This result was unexpected and may have been caused by water quality, the nutritional content of Lake Mead seston, and/or over feeding. …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Xylose is a natural monosaccharide found in biomass such as straw, pecan shells, cottonseed hulls, and corncobs. Using this monosaccharide, we report the green synthesis and characterization of biocompatible, biodegradable xylose encapsulated gold nanoparticles (Xyl-GNPs) with potential antibacterial activity. GNPs were synthesized using the bioreduction property of xylose on the chloroaurate anions in an aqueous solution at room temperature and at atmospheric pressure. The characterization of synthesized GNPs was examined by UV-vis spectroscopy; transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Results indicate that the particles were stable; near spherical in shape with an …
The Effect Of Phosphite On Mycorrhiza Formation In American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata), Matthew T. Perkins
The Effect Of Phosphite On Mycorrhiza Formation In American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata), Matthew T. Perkins
Honors Theses
One of the primary hindrances to Castanea dentata restoration in the Southeast is the root rot disease caused by the fungus-like microorganism Phytophthora cinnamomi. Root rot can be combated by the application of mono- and di-potassium salts of phosphorous acid, which are marketed as phosphite fungicides. Despite its value in preventing infection by P. cinnamomi it is also thought that phosphite may impede root colonization by beneficial, ectomycorrhizal fungi. I hypothesized that plants given a routine application of phosphite will display fewer mycorrhizas in the root tips than those plants that were not treated with potassium phosphite. Therefore I attempted …

Placental 11b-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Expression And Birth Weight In Hamilton County, Tn, Colleen Katherine Mikelson
Placental 11b-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Expression And Birth Weight In Hamilton County, Tn, Colleen Katherine Mikelson
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Infants born below 2,500 grams are classified as low birth w eight. Reduced birth weight has been shown to increase the risk of infant mortality and chronic adulthood diseases. In 2007, Hamilton Country reported 12.0% of live births to be low birth weight, compared to the state average of 9.4%. An excess in utero exposure to cortisol has been linked to restricted fetal growth. Placental production of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2) inactivates cortisol before passage into the fetus. This study tests the hypothesis that increased placental 11β-HSD2 expression has a positive correlation with an individualized birth weight centile. A …
Day To Day Change Making: The Transformative Potential Of Dumpster Diving, Elizabeth Emery Donovan
Day To Day Change Making: The Transformative Potential Of Dumpster Diving, Elizabeth Emery Donovan
Pomona Senior Theses
This paper investigates the potential of dumpster diving as a tactic of the freegan movement. The goal of the freegan movement is the realization of a postcapitalist world. I first investigate the scope, legality and demographic of dumpster diving in the U.S. I then contextualize dumpster diving within the history of waste, consumerism and excess in the U.S. since the beginning of the 20th century. I conclude by assessing the viabaility of freegan dumpster diving as a transformative tactic in light of its inaccessibility to various individuals as a result of their race and class. I ultimately argue that freeganism …

Interactive Random Forests Plots, Anna T. Quach
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Random Forests is a useful data mining tool that is quite popular in finding variable importance. However, many people don’t make use of the Random Forests results in interactive graphs. Partly, this is because software packages that can do interactive graphs can’t handle large data sets and those that use Random Forests have large data sets or many variables. A new software package in R, known as iPlots eXtreme, that is still in development makes it simple to explore large data sets interactively. I have created a function, called irfplot (interactive random forests plot) that specifically uses Random Forests to …

Intact proteins comprise a major component of organic carbon and nitrogen produced globally and are likely an important fraction of organic matter in sediments and soils. Extracting the protein component from sediments and soils for mass spectral characterization and identification represents a substantial challenge given the range of products and functionalities present in the complex matrix. Multiple forms of gel electrophoresis were evaluated as a means of enhancing recovery of sedimentary protein before proteomic characterization and compared with a direct enzymatic digestion of proteins in sediments. Resulting tryptic peptides were analyzed using shotgun proteomics and tandem mass spectra were evaluated …

Redeveloping Regional Economies For Present And Future Generations: Prosperity For People Within Ecological Limits, Langdon Marsh, Craig W. Shinn
Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations
Many scientists and scholars believe the world is headed toward multiple ecological and social crises during the lifetime of much of the world's population. If they are correct, a shift in how economies work will be necessary. We will no longer be able to rely on the ever expanding use of natural resources with the attendant pollution from their extraction, processing, transport, disposal, and social costs including civil disruptions and wars associated with greater scarcity. A number of proposals have been made that offer either comprehensive or partial solutions to the regional and global dimensions of these impending crises. One …
