1h-Cyclopropabenzene And 1h-Cyclopropa[B]Naphthalene Fumigation Downregulates Ethylene Production And Maintains Fruit Quality Of Controlled Atmosphere Stored ‘Granny Smith’ Apple, Vijay Y. Tokala, Zora Singh, Poe N. Kyaw
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The ‘Granny Smith’ is a commercial apple cultivar in Western Australia and popular in the apple world as well, for its unique green colour and flavour. The effects of two new ethylene antagonists namely 1H-cyclopropabenzene (BC) and 1H-cyclopropa[b]naphthalene (NC), as well as 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on ethylene production, rates of respiration and fruit quality were investigated in controlled atmosphere (CA) stored ‘Granny Smith’ apple. The apple fruit were fumigated with 1 μM BC (0.09 μL.L−1) or 1 μM NC (0.14 μL.L−1) or 18 μM (1 μL.L−1) 1-MCP for 18 h at room temperature (20 ± 2 °C and 65 ± 5% …

Native Symbiotic Fungus Increases Shoot Biomass And Grain Yield Of Canola, Khalil Kariman, Craig Scanlan, Zed Rengell
The State of Soil Science in WA
More than 90% of land plant species (including most agricultural crops) form beneficial associations with soil-borne mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal hyphae allow plants to indirectly explore a large soil volume and forage for nutrients (most importantly P, but also micronutrients) that are usually poorly available in soils due to their immobility. Recent studies using state-of-the-art DNA sequencing technologies have unearthed much more complexity in root-fungal relationships than those discovered using the traditional morphology-based approaches.
Topsoil Water Repellence Increased Early Wheat Growth And Nutrition, Simon Yeap, Richard Bell, Craig Scanlan, Richard Harper
Topsoil Water Repellence Increased Early Wheat Growth And Nutrition, Simon Yeap, Richard Bell, Craig Scanlan, Richard Harper
The State of Soil Science in WA
Soil water repellence, derived from the accumulation of hydrophobic organic compounds, is a constraint to crop and pasture production worldwide predominantly in sandy soils. Inhibited water infiltration, unstable wetting, and preferential flow are key hydrologic issues in water-repellent soil which adversely affect plant germination and establishment. However, despite the general understanding that soil water repellence can reduce soil nutrient bioavailability due to the prevalence of dry topsoil, the implications of water-repellent topsoil for plant growth and nutrition per se are unclear.
Designing A Health Coach-Augmented Mhealth System For The Secondary Prevention Of Coronary Heart Disease, Avijit Sengupta
Designing A Health Coach-Augmented Mhealth System For The Secondary Prevention Of Coronary Heart Disease, Avijit Sengupta
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents research that employs design science research (DSR) methodology to develop and evaluate a high-fidelity prototype of a home-based cardiac rehabilitation (HBCR) system to support self-management of chronic cardiovascular diseases like coronary heart disease (CHD) and to offer secondary prevention against other chronic diseases with similar risk factors. While the population of coronary heart disease (CHD) patients requiring cardiac rehabilitation (CR) continues to expand, lack of access and other barriers to center based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR) presents a huge challenge. A mobile phone and wearable device based technological system can offer an HBCR program for CHD. By following …

Privacy protection has recently been in the spotlight of attention to both academia and industry. Society protects individual data privacy through complex legal frameworks. The increasing number of applications of data science and artificial intelligence has resulted in a higher demand for the ubiquitous application of the data. The privacy protection of the broad Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom (DIKW) landscape, the next generation of information organization, has taken a secondary role. In this paper, we will explore DIKW architecture through the applications of the popular swarm intelligence and differential privacy. As differential privacy proved to be an effective data privacy approach, we will …

Chemical Nature Of Phosphorus In Cropping Soils From Western Australia Characterised By 31p Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, Gustavo Boitt, Craig Scanlan, Zed Rengel
The State of Soil Science in WA
Speciation of soil phosphorus (P) is paramount to understanding the biogeochemical cycle in agroecosystems and key for an efficient P management. Most studies using solution-state 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for P speciation were done in soils from eastern Australia. Currently, in-depth knowledge of the P dynamics is limited for the western-Australian region. Only one study has been published using solution-state 31P NMR to characterise P compounds in topsoils (0–2.5 cm) from Western Australia under karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor F. Muell.) forests. Therefore, the objective of this research is to improve our knowledge and provide new information on the …

Engineering In Situ Soil And Plant Microbiomes To Improve Agricultural Productivity, Falko Mathes, Fiona Mcdonald, Peter Keating
The State of Soil Science in WA
The world’s population is predicted to reach 9 billion people by 2050 thus increasing crop production on current agricultural land to meet the rising demand for food is paramount. Farmers routinely manage both plant and soil nutrition to increase crop yields. However, active management of in situ soil and plant microbiomes to improve productivity is uncommon. Here, we present a patented technology aiming to reliably engineer soil and plant microbiomes to increase crop production. Bioprime is a ferment of molasses that can be applied as seed coating, or as foliar and soil spray.

Kinetoplastid parasites are a significant public health issue in some tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Kinetoplastid parasites all require glycolysis for survival, with host glucose key for ATP production. One such parasite, Trypanosoma brucei, exclusively metabolizes glucose in its bloodstream form. Trypanosomal glycolysis is unique because it displays unconventional structural features. Hence, glucose metabolism has been studied extensively in T. brucei and is a therapeutic target in kinetoplastid parasites. The lack of in vivo analytical techniques for measuring vital glycolytic metabolites in situ has restricted the ability of researchers to test, with high sensitivity and specificity, the essential roles …
The Early Medieval Transition: Diet Reconstruction, Mobility, And Culture Contact In The Ravenna Countryside, Northern Italy, Anastasia Temkina
The Early Medieval Transition: Diet Reconstruction, Mobility, And Culture Contact In The Ravenna Countryside, Northern Italy, Anastasia Temkina
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research project evaluates the effects of increased mobility and culture contact on dietary practices, and on dietary variation among people buried at two northern Italian sites, Chiunsano di Ficarolo and Chiesazza di Ficarolo, located near the ancient Roman capital of Ravenna and dating 4th to 7th century CE. The Early Medieval period was a time of change, political instability, migration and invasion of the “barbarian” tribes, and diet was not unaffected. In particular, it is hypothesized that a new staple crop, millet, was introduced and that meat consumption had increased. The goal of this research is to use stable …

Literature Review: Pollutant Removal Efficacy Of Floating Treatment Wetlands Across Water Bodies, Sophie Johnson
University Honors Theses
Wetland numbers are declining worldwide and there is a need to replace the water filtration services they provide. One emerging option is floating treatment wetlands (FTW). FTW are a floating mat that serves as a habitat for aquatic plants whose roots are suspended in the water and that remove both organic and inorganic pollutants like nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), potentially toxic metals, and suspended solids. A literature search was performed to examine the efficacy of FTW pollutant removal. Specifically, I inspected 1) how effective FTW are at removing a range of nutrients; 2) what types of plants are most effective …

Role Of Lepidium Sativum In Treating Diabetes And Managing Bodily Functions’ Disorders In Rats., Gehan El-Emary
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
: Lepidium sativum seed (LS) is a plant used globally for its medicinal effect in treating diabetes. This study examined the ability of an aqueous extract of LS to treat diabetes and manage disorders of bodily functions. It used 70 male Wistar rats, each weighing between 190 g and 200 g. Diabetes was established in the rats by injecting them with Alloxan Solution at 150 mg/kg of body weight. The rats were considered diabetic if, after 24 hours, their blood glucose levels were higher than 180 mg/dl. Diabetes caused severe alterations in their blood serum glucose (376.608 mg/dl); …

1. Wildlife strongly alter behaviour in response to human disturbance; however, fundamental questions remain regarding the influence of human infrastructure and activity on animal movement. The Covid-19 pandemic created a natural experiment providing an opportunity to evaluate wildlife movement during a period of greatly reduced human activity. Speculation in scientific reviews and the media suggested that wildlife might be increasing movement and colonizing urban landscapes during pandemic slowdowns. However, theory predicts that animals should move and use space as efficiently as possible, suggesting that movement might actually be reduced relative to decreased human activity.
2. We quantified space use, movement, …
Engineered Nanostructured Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Network (Ndc) Electrodes With Unprecedented Cycling Stability For Water Capacitive Deionization In Harsh Conditions, Soha Essam Anwar
Theses and Dissertations
Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a feasible low-cost desalination technique for low-to-medium (brackish) salinity water. However, cycling stability and regeneration of the CDI electrodes are the bottlenecks hindering the practical application of the technology on large scale. Oxidation of the electrodes during the sequential adsorption-desorption processes is one of the most challenging problems hindering their long-term cycling performance. Herein, we demonstrated the ability to design and fabricate exceptionally stable CDI electrodes via a one-pot pyrolysis protocol. The optimized pyrolysis of nitrogen-carbon precursors at different temperatures enabled the fabrication of carbon materials with a controlled amount nitrogen dopant (NDCs) with exceptional cycling …

Interconnected food, energy, and water (FEW) nexus systems face many challenges to support human well-being (HWB) and maintain resilience, especially in arid and semiarid regions like New Mexico (NM), United States (US). Insufficient FEW resources, unstable economic growth due to fluctuations in prices of crude oil and natural gas, inequitable education and employment, and climate change are some of these challenges. Enhancing the resilience of such coupled socio-environmental systems depends on the efficient use of resources, improved understanding of the interlinkages across FEW system components, and adopting adaptable alternative management strategies. The goal of this study was to develop a …
