The Effect Of Alcohols On Paramecia, William C. Lawler May 1940

The Effect Of Alcohols On Paramecia, William C. Lawler

Bachelors’ Theses

A phenomenon of surpassing biological interest is the adjustment of living substance to its surroundings. That living things should so act as to promote their own welfare is indeed wonderful; that such acts are common is evident on every hand.

The Purification Of Linolenic Acid Of Linseed Oil Fatty Acids By Fractional Crystallization From Acetone, Sylvester Ralph Taterzynski May 1939

The Purification Of Linolenic Acid Of Linseed Oil Fatty Acids By Fractional Crystallization From Acetone, Sylvester Ralph Taterzynski

Bachelors’ Theses

Recently the fat and oil chemists are concerning themselves with a more thorough analysis of the fats and oils. In former years chemists in this field seemed to be satisfied with a relatively superficial analysis, used especially in detecting adulteration of oils.

This lack of detailed- analysis was, in great part, due to the fact -that there was no good methods of separation and analysis and especially of the higher unsaturated fatty acids. Only generalizations and approximate calculations were made. However, in the past few years, a decided step has been made toward a far more detailed investigation of the …

The Comparative Ability Of The Bob-White And The Ring-Necked Pheasant To Withstand Cold And Hunger, Paul L. Errington Mar 1939

The Comparative Ability Of The Bob-White And The Ring-Necked Pheasant To Withstand Cold And Hunger, Paul L. Errington

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

The native Bob-white (Colinus virginianus) and the introduced Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus) may both, on occasion, suffer severe winter mortality over much of their common range in north-central United States. Their habitats often overlap, although the Pheasant has a greater cruising radius and an ability to live in a more open type of country than the Bob-white. In given localities they also live upon much the same kinds of winter foods.

The scope of this paper is not intended to cover the ecological adjustments of Pheasants or of Bob-whites to their winter environment so much …

The Preparation Of Glucuronic Acid From Gum Acacia, Mary Laurissa Felix Aug 1937

The Preparation Of Glucuronic Acid From Gum Acacia, Mary Laurissa Felix

Bachelors’ Theses

Initial interest in the preparation of glucuronic acid from gum acacia was prompted by several reasons. Being interested in both the chemical and biological fields, the subject of glucuronic acid made a strong appeal. Although glucuronic acid was discovered over fifty years ago, its position in physiology remained until recently undefined. Now, however, it seems fairly certain that this compound is closely related to carbohydrate metabolism and plays an important role as a detoxicating agent in the body.

The laboratory preparation of glucuronic acid is still one of the important problems of chemistry. Our present knowledge of its synthesis and …

The Vitamin D And Provitamin D Content Of Some Varieties Of Utah Wheat, Harold M. Nielsen May 1936

The Vitamin D And Provitamin D Content Of Some Varieties Of Utah Wheat, Harold M. Nielsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.

Selenium In Proteins From Toxic Foodstuffs, Edgar Page Painter Jan 1935

Selenium In Proteins From Toxic Foodstuffs, Edgar Page Painter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The importance of the selenium problem has been established. Knight (1) in an address before The Association of Official Agricultural Chemists summarized the progress made on the problem, conservatively emphasized its importance, and stressed the need for extensive research. It is a paramount problem not only in South Dakota, but in many other states as well.

A Comparative Study Of The Chemical Composition Of Artificially Dried Hay To Obtain An Insight As To Its Nutritive Value, Charles F. Schalbe May 1930

A Comparative Study Of The Chemical Composition Of Artificially Dried Hay To Obtain An Insight As To Its Nutritive Value, Charles F. Schalbe

Bachelors’ Theses

This work has been undertaken as a ·result of tests recently carried out at the Greene Brothers' Brook Hill Farm at Genesee Depot, Wisconsin. It was found that cows, when fed artificially dried hay, produce milk in quantities greatly in excess of that accountable from known differences in the hay. Moreover, the milk seemed to have a different flavor - similar to pasture produced milk.

Bulletin No 81 - The Improvement Of Pastures With Notes On The Pasture Trefoils In Western Australia, E. A. Mann, D. A. Herbert

Bulletins 1 - 2999

Agriculture can be roughly divided for practical purposes into two large divisions, those of animal husbandry and vegetable husbandry. It is with the former that this pamphlet is chiefly concerned and its object is to contribute, it possible, in some small measure towards the problem of how to increase time stock carrying capacity of our natural pasture lands. it is unnecessary to dwell upon the importance of this question, especially in relation to the remarkable developments which are taking place in time wool-growing industry in the Southern and more coastal areas of Western Australia.

Bulletin No. 52 - The Chemical Composition Of Utah Soils (Cache And Sanpete Counties), John A. Widtsoe Jan 1898

Bulletin No. 52 - The Chemical Composition Of Utah Soils (Cache And Sanpete Counties), John A. Widtsoe

UAES Bulletins

The soils of the State [Utah], as found by the Mormon pioneers of 1847, were virgin in the fullest sense of the word. As far as man knows, only a few patches in Southern Utah had ever been cultivated. For untold centuries the atmospheric forces, unhindered by man's intervention, had been allowed to weather and make fit for agricultural purposes the rock fragments that, washed down into the valleys from the mountain ranges, constitute the soils of the State. For a long period, also, long before human tradition begins, there had not been enough water in the Utah valleys to …
