A Comparative Study On The Frequency Of Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, And Allergic Disorders Between Bottle-Fed And Breast-Fed Infants From Birth To Twelve Weeks Of Age, Sylvia C. Souza Jul 1980

A Comparative Study On The Frequency Of Respiratory, Gastrointestinal, And Allergic Disorders Between Bottle-Fed And Breast-Fed Infants From Birth To Twelve Weeks Of Age, Sylvia C. Souza

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Questions concerning the advantages of breast-feeding have been debated since the introduction of commercially-prepared formula about 50 years ago. Some recognized benefits of breast milk include less respiratory as well as other Infections, less allergy in infancy and later life, and a lower morbidity rate in less-developed countries. From 1955 to 1971 in the United States there was a decline in the incidence of breast feeding related to several factors which included the introduction of formula, mothers returning to the work force, and strict maternity units' rules and routines. Since 1971 to the present there has been a resurgence in …

Dynamic Model Of The Zone Of Aeration, Robert N. Maccallum, R. A. Sims

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A mathematical model by Green (1), simulating one-dimensional vertical ground-water movement in unsaturated soils of the prairie region of Kansas, has been adapted for use in a wetlands environment typified by the wetlands forest of Eastern Arkansas. The model consists of two second-order, non-linear, partial differential equations and an algorithm for their numerical solution. The original model was extended to include functions for seasonal changes in transpiration and for drainage of excess precipitation. Before the addition of the two functions, the model reliability was limited to one growth season. With the mathematical model presented in this work it is possible …

The Future Of Coastal Zone Management: The 1980 Amendments, Kenneth J. Buckland May 1980

The Future Of Coastal Zone Management: The 1980 Amendments, Kenneth J. Buckland

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Federal Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 (P.L.98-583) is currently being questioned on its validity, purpose, funding, wording, and accomplishments in carrying out national policies for the benefit of the U.S. coastal zones. All the legislation promulgated for management of coastal resources, the agencies involved in coastal zone management, and the groups participating in these actions have been challenged in recent months and have subsequently been evolving in their functions. What remedies are available and how they could be realized through the present federal laws and organizational structure are areas which must be discussed now if we are to …

Environmental Manipulation In Roof Rat Control Programs, Gene Zdunowski Mar 1980

Environmental Manipulation In Roof Rat Control Programs, Gene Zdunowski

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 9th (1980)

The control of roof rat Rattus rattus involves not just chemical and physical suppression, exclusion, and sanitation in an integrated environmental manipulation approach, but in order for the environmental manipulative technique to work, the environmental-behavioral habits of the individuals living in these roof rat infested areas must be modified. Once a target area of known rodent infestation has been initially impacted and environmentally improved upon, the task by the homeowner to continue to practice environmental manipulation must be ongoing. Continued maintenance of the environmentally improved area by staff knowledgeable in environmental manipulation and behavioral modification is the only way to …

The Need For Good Public Relations And Staff Training In The Use Of Toxins In Pest Destruction, Peter C. Nelson Mar 1980

The Need For Good Public Relations And Staff Training In The Use Of Toxins In Pest Destruction, Peter C. Nelson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 9th (1980)

With ever-increasing environmental pressures being placed on all animal control agencies worldwide, particularly those utilizing toxins as control weapons, the time has arisen where those agencies must attempt to anticipate these pressures which are likely to become more vocal and counter them wherever possible before they happen. It is an accepted fact that the world as a whole has become extremely environmental conscious in all fields, not just pest control. This can be seen or heard most days of the week in newspapers, on television or radio. The reasons for this awareness of the environmental problem are wide and diverse …

Determination Of Sediment Filtration Efficiency Of Grass Media, David T. Kao Mar 1980

Determination Of Sediment Filtration Efficiency Of Grass Media, David T. Kao

KWRRI Research Reports

Vegetative filters serve the purpose of retarding flow. As a result the sediment carrying power of flowing water in a vegetated channel is greatly reduced and silting takes place along the section where the vegetation is planted.

The mechanism of the filtering action of real or artificial vegetation can be described by a simplified principle, in that a gross reduction of turbulent fluctuation of the fluid is involved. This in turn allows the sediment particles to settle under the force of gravity more readily. In the case of nonsubrnerged flow, solid particles may settle out even faster due to the …

An Analysis Of The Irreversible Thermodynamics Model For Coupled Heat And Moisture Transport Phenomena In Unsaturated Porous Media, J. A. Havens Jan 1980

An Analysis Of The Irreversible Thermodynamics Model For Coupled Heat And Moisture Transport Phenomena In Unsaturated Porous Media, J. A. Havens

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The Irreversible Thermodynamics-based model for the description of coupled heat and moisture transfer, attributed to Cary and Taylor, was analyzed. The transport coefficients appearing in the model equations were independently determined, and the equations were numerically integrated to predict temperature and moisture content profiles for a closed system of water unsaturated glass beads. An experimental investigation of the moist glass beads medium provided measurements of steady-state profiles of local temperatures and moisture content. These data, when compared with model predictions, indicated the validity of the Irreversible Thermodynamics approach. The coupling coefficient relating thermal gradients to moisture flux was found to …

Comparative Schematology And Pebbling With Auxiliary Pushdowns, Nicholas J. Pippenger Jan 1980

Comparative Schematology And Pebbling With Auxiliary Pushdowns, Nicholas J. Pippenger

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper has three claims to interest. First, it combines comparative schematology with complexity theory. This combination is capable of distinguishing among Strong's “languages of maximal power,” a distinction not possible when comparative schematology is based on computability considerations alone, and it is capable of establishing exponential disparities in running times, a capability not currently possessed by complexity theory alone. Secondly, this paper inaugurates the study of pebbling with auxiliary pushdowns, which bears to plain pebbling the same relationship as Cook's study of space-bounded machines with auxiliary pushdowns bears to plain space-bounded machines. This extension of pebbling serves as the …

Eighty-one water samples were collected from wells in the Boone-St. Joe limestone aquifer of northwest Arkansas and analyzed for fecal coliform, fecal streptococcus, total coliform bacteria, chloride, phosphate, nitrate and sulfate to determine the degree of contamination. Forty-nine percent of the samples had fecal streptococcus counts greater than 1 colony per 100 ml, 68% had total coliform counts of 1 or more colonies per 100 ml, and 9% of the wells had fecal coliform counts of 1 or more colonies per 100 ml. Water from wells in Clarksville, Nixa, Noark, Tonti and Waben cherty silt loam soils showed from 83 …

Mercury Content Of Waters In The Midcontinent Region, Larry Barber Ii, Kenneth F. Steele Jan 1980

Mercury Content Of Waters In The Midcontinent Region, Larry Barber Ii, Kenneth F. Steele

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Two major areas of the midcontinent region were investigated for their aqueous mercury concentrations. Sixteen surface water and 17 ground water samples were collected in an eleven county area of N.W. Arkansas, S.W. Missouri and N.E. Oklahoma (Ozark area) and analyzed for total dissolved mercury by the flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. The range (<0.2 to 0.8 ppb), the mean (0.4 ppb) and the median (0.4 ppb) are the same for both ground water and surface water. Values obtained for the Ozark area are slightly greater than those reported for surface water by others (about 0.1 ppb), but are well within the range reported for surface waters (0.1 to 17.0 ppb). The range for 102 ground water samples from the Ouachita Mountain area is <0.1 to 2.3 ppb, the mean 0.3 ppb and the median 0.1 ppb. Thus, the mercury values for this area are similar to those of the Ozark area except fora higher upper range. The mercury mineralization (cinnabar) in the southern part of the Ouachita Mountain area, in part, is the cause of the higher values. Only two samples (2.1 and 2.3 ppb), both from the Ouachita Mountain area, exceed the EPA drinking water limits of 2 ppb mercury in the western Arkansas region.

The Removal Of Viruses From Water By Conventional Water-Treatment Practices, Janet S. Ziegle Jan 1980

The Removal Of Viruses From Water By Conventional Water-Treatment Practices, Janet S. Ziegle

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of conventional water-treatment methods in removing viruses from raw water sources. Those processes studied included alum flocculation, rapid sand filtration of fleeced and unflocced water samples, and chlorine disinfection.

This study was approached using coliphage f2 as a seeded indicator of treatment efficiency. Coliphage f2 was chosen as an indicator because of its similarities to enteric viral pathogens in both morphology and sensitivity to water-treatment processes. Coliphage f2 was found to occur naturally in surface waters, but not in numbers sufficient to interfere with calculations.

The Evolution Of Supernova Remnants In Different Galactic Environments, And Its Effects On Supernova Statistics, Menas Kafatos, S. Sofia, C. Bruhweilier, T. R. Gull

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

By examining the interaction between supernova (SN) ejecta and the various environments in which the explosive event might occur, we conclude that only a small fraction of the many SNs produce observable supernova remnants (SNRs). This fraction, which is found to depend weakly upon the lower mass limit of the SN progenitors, and more strongly on the specific characteristics of the associated interstellar medium, decreases from approximately 15% near the galactic center to 10% at R8a1 -10 kpc and drops nearly to zero for Rga~> 15 kpc. Generally, whether a SNR is detectable is determined by the density of the …

Inhibition Of N⁸-Acetylspermidine Deacetylation Activity Of Rat Liver, Michael J. Santacroce Jan 1980

Inhibition Of N⁸-Acetylspermidine Deacetylation Activity Of Rat Liver, Michael J. Santacroce

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

An enzyme activity located in the soluble fraction of rat liver which is known to deacetylate N8-acetylspermidine is studied. Using a crude cytosol preparation from rat liver, tritium-labelled N8-acetylspermidine [acetyl-3H] was shown to undergo deacetylation which was dependent upon both time of incubation and protein concentration. The Michalis constant for this deacetylation of N8-acetylspermidine is approximately 4.4 μM.

N1-Acetylspermidine showed a competitive inhibition of this N8-acetylspermidine deacetylation activity, and was found to be the most potent inhibitor tested. Diamine and polyamine compounds were also shown to inhibit the …

Evaluation Of Particular Mulches As Plant Growth Media And Erosion Inhibitors, C. Earl Israelson, William F. Campbell, Eugene K. Israelsen, Ronald V. Canfield, David Ianson

Reports

Introduction: Increasing public awareness of the desireability of protecting the environment from soil erosion caused by wind and water has centered attention on large construction projects such as highways and housing subdivisions, as well as on individual building sites and parking lots. If unattended, sediment produced from these areas pollutes surface water, restricts drainage, fills reservoirs, damages adjacent land, and upsets the natual ecology of lakes and streams. The search continues for products and practices that will prevent or lessen the amount of sediment leaving construction sites. Products currently in use include chemical as well as organic materials, and they …

Influence Of Unsaturated Hydraulic Properties On Infiltration From Circular Surface Areas, Abdolhossien Nassehzadeh-Tabrizi, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

The effects and interactive effects on infiltration of parameters in the Brooks-Corey equation for defining the hydraulic properties of unsaturated soils are investigated by analyzing the results of numerical solutions of the unsaturated flow characteristics resulting from water applied on a circular surface area. The soil parameters are allowed to vary continuously as a function of depth. The parameters that have been allowed to vary separately and in pairs are: (1) The pore size distribution exponent, (2) Pb- The bubbling pressure, (3) Sr- The residual saturation, (4) n- The soil porosity and (5) Ko- The saturated hydraulic conductivity. The conclusions …
