Urban Gray Squirrel Damage And Population Management: A Case History, J. Hadidian, D. Manski, V. Flyger, C. Cox, G. Hodge

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)

Lafayette Park, a 3.0 hectare national park located across the street from the White House in Washington D.C., has had a gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) density as high as 50 animals/hectare. In recent years this large population caused significant damage to mature trees and other vegetation. In keeping with the legislative mandate to protect and preserve the historic landscape in Lafayette Park, the National Park Service implemented a squirrel management program following an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. The population was studied and monitored to determine the ecological bases for high squirrel numbers. Action was taken through a …

Decontamination Of A Histoplasma Capsulatum-Infested Blackbird Roost: Use Of A Sprinkler System To Apply Formalin, A.R. Stickley Jr., J.R. Pruitt, C.E. Hume, T. Pass Ii, C.H. Gayle Oct 1987

Decontamination Of A Histoplasma Capsulatum-Infested Blackbird Roost: Use Of A Sprinkler System To Apply Formalin, A.R. Stickley Jr., J.R. Pruitt, C.E. Hume, T. Pass Ii, C.H. Gayle

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)

When disturbed, blackbird/ starling roost sites can be sources of locally severe outbreaks of histoplasmosis; therefore decontamination with formalin is sometimes prudent. We describe the use of a $5000 sprinkler system for spraying formalin on a Histoplasma capsulatum-infested roost site. This system precludes direct worker involvement in the application of this hazardous chemical to the area. Analysis of soil samples collected and cultured both before and after formalin treatment confirmed the eradication of H. capsulatum from the 1.3 ha site. Cost was approximately $17,000 with sprinkler system provided at no charge.

Deer Damage Control Preferences And Use Decisions Of New York Orchardists, K.G. Purdy, W.F. Siemer, G.A. Pomerantz, T.L. Brown Oct 1987

Deer Damage Control Preferences And Use Decisions Of New York Orchardists, K.G. Purdy, W.F. Siemer, G.A. Pomerantz, T.L. Brown

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 3rd (1987)

Previous studies in New York, the nation's second leading state in apple production, have contributed much to deer management decisions that give consideration to orchardists' concerns about crop damage. Little information, however, has been reported about orchardists' reasons for adopting or not adopting particular types of deer damage controls or their preference for various forms of possible damage control assistance. Two complementary studies, conducted in early 1987 by the Human Dimensions Research Unit, Department of Natural Resources, Cornell University, have addressed these information needs. A mail survey of orchardists in an important fruit-producing region of southeastern New York indicated that …

Site-Diagonal T-Matrix Expansion For Anisotropic Transport And Percolation On Bond-Disordered Lattices, Paul Ernest Parris Oct 1987

Site-Diagonal T-Matrix Expansion For Anisotropic Transport And Percolation On Bond-Disordered Lattices, Paul Ernest Parris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A study is made of the dynamical behavior of an electron or exciton undergoing anisotropic hopping on a d-dimensional bond-disordered lattice. Starting with a master equation for the site probabilities, an exact equation of motion is obtained for the probability currents that flow along the bonds connecting nearest-neighbor sites. Unlike the original master equation, the equation of motion which couples the microscopic currents contains the randomly distributed hopping rates in a form which is strictly site diagonal. The simplification that results leads to a new and exact expansion for the diffusion tensor in powers of an appropriately defined single-bond t …

Energy-Transfer Theory For The Classical Decay Rates Of Molecules At Rough Metallic Surfaces, P.T. Leung, Thomas F. George Sep 1987

Energy-Transfer Theory For The Classical Decay Rates Of Molecules At Rough Metallic Surfaces, P.T. Leung, Thomas F. George

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The problem of the decay rates for molecules at rough metallic surfaces is considered, where the classical electromagnetic energy-transfer theory of Chance, Prock, and Silbey for a flat surface is generalized to the case of a rough boundary. A dynamical theory is constructed through the combination of the Sommerfeld antenna theory and the integral equation formalism of Maxwell's equations at rough boundaries established mainly by Maradudin, Mills, and Agarwal. Perturbative solutions are obtained and numerical results are given with reference to a shallow sinusoidal grating surface. The results, when compared with those obtained previously from the application of the image …

Dynamic Structure Of A Nonaqueous Lamellar Liquid Crystal: Comparison With The Aqueous Case, Stig Friberg, Anthony J.I. Ward, David W. Larsen Sep 1987

Dynamic Structure Of A Nonaqueous Lamellar Liquid Crystal: Comparison With The Aqueous Case, Stig Friberg, Anthony J.I. Ward, David W. Larsen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The lamellar phase of sodium dodecyl sulfate/decanol/glycerol has been compared to the analogous water-based system. Results of NMR studies of deuteriated alcohol and surfactant showed the bilayer to be more disordered in the nonaqueous case than in the phase made with water. The order profiles of the two systems, however, were of the same form, implying that the same essential packing requirements applied to each case. The overall increase in dynamic disorder observed in the glycerol system is a result of a transversely more disordered bilayer/solvent interface. © 1987, American Chemical Society. Analysis Of Forms Of Sulfur In Coal, Gary Ruba Aug 1987

Analysis Of Forms Of Sulfur In Coal, Gary Ruba

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Methods for the determination of sulfur forms are reviewed. Each method is compared to the ASTM D 2492 standard method when data are available. The extraction of pyrites with dilute nitric acid is reviewed in detail because of its relationship to data presented in this thesis.

A new technique for the analysis of organic sulfur was developed in response to a need by the coal community for an accurate and inexpensive method. In this method nitric acid extraction is used to remove the inorganic sulfur forms and the residual coal is then analyzed for organic sulfur. Organic sulfur values obtained …

Assessment Of The Effects Of Household Chemicals Upon Individual Septic Tank Performances, Mark A. Gross

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

A laboratory study and a field study were performed to determine the amounts of specific household chemicals required to destroy bacteria populations in individual domestic septic tanks. The particular chemicals evaluated include liquid chlorine bleach, High Test Hypochlorite (HTH), Lysol disinfectant and Drano crystal. The laboratory study was performed to determine the approximate chemical concentrations to destroy the bacteria in the septic tank, and the field study showed the actual effect of the chemicals upon the bacteria in terms of reduction of the number of bacteria in the septic tank as well as the time required for the bacterial population …

The Evolution Of Text Formatting Languages, Dirk Herr-Hoyman Jun 1987

The Evolution Of Text Formatting Languages, Dirk Herr-Hoyman

Masters Theses

Text, as seen in books and magazines, can take on three forms: string, graphic (two-dimensional), and image (digitized pictures). Text formatting processes text into a representation suitable for printing. Since a printer is really a computer, this representation is machine code for the printer. ASCII is one such code.

Six historically significant text formatting languages are surveyed: Runoff, Troff, TeX, Bravo, Scribe, and Postscript. The emphasis is on the text types available and the code generated. The main evolutionary forces are the changes in printers. Comparisons are made with programming languages.

Each of the six languages has ASCII as its …

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer May 1987

Rise To Power Of Senator Joseph R. Mccarthy: Reflections Of The Cold War Mccarthy Era In American Film, Scott Lainer

Honors Theses

The common bond between much of the film industry and Joseph McCarthy was insecurity and the drive for national approval. If one grasps the specific characteristics of McCarthy the man, and the methods of these politically "inspired" movies, we can to better place the period into context and acknowledge the fact that, if the citizenry is not aware, and is again caught by an ever-building wave of trickle down sentiment, the 1950s might not prove to be an isolated period in American history. Insecurity was not a fifties novelty. It still exists, and could potentially escalate anti-Communist policy and sentiment …

The Aminolysis Of N-Hydroxysuccinimide Esters. A Structure-Reactivity Study, Gary W. Cline, Samir B. Hanna

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Twelve amines, which vary substantially in basicity and in steric environment around N, have been allowed to compete—in anhydrous dioxane solution—in the aminolysis of the N-hydroxysuccinimide esters of unsubstituted, p-OCH3, p-N02, and 3,5-(N02)2 benzoic acids. The amines, which encompass a basicity range of 6.5 pk units, display a 10000-fold variation in reactivity in their reaction with the p-N02ester. for the sterically unhindered amines, a Bronsted-type plot of log kobsdvs. pKa has a slope of ~0.7. Logic And Proof For Mathematicians: A Twentieth Century Perspective, Calvin Jongsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

If there is one aspect of mathematics education that frustrates both students and teachers alike, it has got to be learning how to do valid proofs. Students often feel they really know the mathematics they're studying but that their teachers place some unreasonably stringent demands upon their arguments. Teachers, on the other hand, can't understand where their students get some of the wacky arguments they come up with. They argue in circles, they end up proving a different result from what they claim, they make false statements, they draw invalid inferences - it can be quite exasperating at times! Unfortunately, …

Semiclassical Analysis Of A Detuned Ring Laser With A Saturable Absorber: New Results For The Steady States, D. E. Chyba, N. B. Abraham, Alfonso M. Albano Apr 1987

Semiclassical Analysis Of A Detuned Ring Laser With A Saturable Absorber: New Results For The Steady States, D. E. Chyba, N. B. Abraham, Alfonso M. Albano

Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper presents new results for the steady states of a detuned ring laser with a saturable absorber. We employ a semiclassical model which assumes homogeneously broadened two-level atoms. We proceed by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for the longitudinal dependence of the steady states of this system, and then simplify our solution by use of the uniform-field approximation. We present uniform-field results for squared electric field versus operating frequency, and for each of these versus cavity tuning and laser excitation. Various cavity linewidths and both resonant and nonresonant amplifier and absorber line-center frequencies are considered. The most notable finding is …

Inactivation Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses By Energetic Heavy Ions, M. P. R. Waligorski, Kim Sun Loh, Robert Katz Mar 1987

Inactivation Of Dry Enzymes And Viruses By Energetic Heavy Ions, M. P. R. Waligorski, Kim Sun Loh, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

A newly developed corrected formula for the radial distribution of dose (RDD) has been used to calculate cross sections for the inactivation of dry enzymes and viruses by heavy ions ranging from 42He to 4018 Ar of energies ca. 10 MeV/a.m.u., spanning a range of LET of ca. 5–2,000 Me V cm2 g–1. In comparison with earlier “point-target” calculations of Butts and Katz where a linear range-energy relationship for electrons (δ-rays) was used, and with “extended-target” calculations of Zhang, Dunn, and Katz, where a power range-energy law and an “uncorrected” RDD formula …

Why Do Possums Survive Aerial Poisoning Operations?, D. R. Morgan, C. L. Batcheler, J. A. Peters Mar 1987

Why Do Possums Survive Aerial Poisoning Operations?, D. R. Morgan, C. L. Batcheler, J. A. Peters

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

Major causes of failure of aerial poisoning operations against possums identified were: sublethal toxic loading, undersize sublethal baits, nonlearned behavioral aversion to 1080, and failure to encounter bait. Dislike of bait was not a major cause of failure.

Progress has been made towards solving these problems, but failure to encounter bait remains a likely major reason for possums surviving aerial poisoning. Improvements in the aerial sowing of bait are essential if the full benefit of this progress is to be realized.

Antireflection Of An Absorbing Substrate By An Absorbing Thin Film At Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, E. Bu-Habib, J. Casset, G. Chassaing, P. Gravier Feb 1987

Antireflection Of An Absorbing Substrate By An Absorbing Thin Film At Normal Incidence, R. M.A. Azzam, E. Bu-Habib, J. Casset, G. Chassaing, P. Gravier

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

An absorbing substrate of complex refractive index n2 - jk2 at wavelength λ can be coated by an absorbing thin film of complex refractive index n1 - jk1 and thickness d to achieve zero reflection at normal incidence. For given n2,k2 multiple solutions (n1,k1,d/λ) are found that correspond to infinitely many distinct antireflection layers. This is demonstrated for a Si substrate at two wavelengths (6328 and 4420 Å). The response of these absorbing antireflection layers to changes of the angle of incidence from 0 …

A Prototype For Quality: Bryce Canyon National Park Interpretive Prospectus, 1987, United States Department Of The Interior, National Park Service

Parks and Reserves

To ensure maximum coordination of message delivery, personal service efforts should be orchestrated as a result of annual (winter season) planning sessions involving TW Services, Bryce/Zion Trail Rides, and park personnel. Such planning should coordinate general summer season schedules, brainstorm new program ideas and service proposals, and establish procedures for monitoring and evaluation. This is also an opportunity to identify high priority messages regarding resources, events, new services, and park management pertinent in the coming season; in this manner, emphases for seasonal training are established.
