Aerosol Particle Bounding In Cascade Impactors, Bisma Husen
Aerosol Particle Bounding In Cascade Impactors, Bisma Husen
Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)
Particle deposition characteristics were observed from the aerosol sampling results of a UNICO cascade impactor. A simple model of particle motion combined with Hiemenz flow of stagnation flow on a flat plate were developed and discussed.
Both results and analysis were compared to recent models on particle bouncing errors or secondary deposition which included vortices formation around the edge of the slot, back spin (Magnus effect), and hydrodynamic conditions of the particles. The analysis was limited to a laminar inviscid and incompressible case. The main obstacle in the observation was the fact that impactor nozzles were unsymmetrical to a considerable …

On Serializability Of Multidatabase Transactions Through Forced Local Conflict, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos, Marek Rusinkiewicz, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
The main difficulty in enforcing global serializability in a multidatabase environment lies in resolving indirect transitive conflicts between multidatabase transactions. Indirect conflicts introduced by local transactions are difficult to resolve because the behavior or even the existence of local transactions is not known to the multidatabase system. To overcome these problems, we propose to incorporate additional data manipulation operations in the subtransactions of each multidatabase transaction. We show that if these operations create direct conflicts between subtransactions at each participating local database system, indirect conflicts can be resolved even if the multidatabase system is not aware of their existence. Based …
An Analysis Of Dissolved Organic Compounds And Their Contribution To Iron Complexation In The Shallow Leachate Plume Of The West Kl Landfill Kalamazoo, Michigan, Eric Fahle
Masters Theses
High concentrations of dissolved iron are present in downgradient groundwater samples adjacent to the western border of the West KL Landfill. Analysis by Rudder (1988) of groundwater samples indicates oversaturation of selected iron oxides, iron sulfides and siderite in monitoring wells TW-4 and M3.
Previous research suggests that pyrogallol, gallic acid, tannic acid and similar organic compounds may retard the oxidation of ferrous iron in the shallow leachate plume of the West KL landfill (Rudder, 1988). Present research utilizing solid phase extraction, reverse phase high performance chromatography, Fourier transform IR spectrophotometry, UV/Visible spectrophotometry, and gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy indicate that pyrogallol, …
Anderson Localization Effects In The Light Transmitted Through A Rough Thin Metal Film, Naimah Mohd. Shafie
Anderson Localization Effects In The Light Transmitted Through A Rough Thin Metal Film, Naimah Mohd. Shafie
Masters Theses
The theory of Anderson localization is used to study transmission enhancements in the diffusely transmitted light through a rough thin metal film. These transmission enhancements arise due to phase coherent effects associated with Anderson localization of surface polaritons and are manifested as a well-defined peak in the angular distribution of the intensity of the diffuse component of the transmitted light for light moving opposite to the specularly reflected beam.
The dependence of the widths and heights of the localization related transmission peak is investigated with computer programming and calculations by McGurn and Maradudin (1989). The peak is found to depend …

Biological Effectiveness Of High-Energy Protons: Target Fragmentation, Francis A. Cucinotta, Robert Katz, John W. Wilson, Lawrence W. Townsend, Judy Shinn, Ferenc Hajnal
Robert Katz Publications
High-energy protons traversing tissue produce local sources of high-linear-energy-transfer (LET) ions through nuclear fragmentation. We examine the contribution of these target fragments to the biological effectiveness of high-energy protons using the cellular track model. The effects of secondary ions are treated in terms of the production collision density using energy-dependent parameters from a high-energy fragmentation model. Calculations for mammalian cell cultures show that at high dose, at which intertrack effects become important, protons deliver damage similar to that produced by γ rays, and with fragmentation the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of protons increases moderately from unity. At low dose, where …

Effects Of Capillarity On Dnapl Thickness In Wells And In Adjacent Sands, Timothy V. Adams
Masters Theses
Physical model experiments were used to investigate the behavior of dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in various geologic media.
The objectives of the laboratory investigations were to (a) compare DNAPL thickness in wells to thickness in adjacent sands, (b) observe and interpret dyed DNAPL migration in unsaturated and saturated sands, and (c) study DNAPLs' effects on clay layers.
Two cylindrical glass columns fitted with various well screens were filled with sand, clay layers, water, and dyed DNAPLs in four experiments. Columns were packed with fine or coarse sand and clay layers. Coarse hydrophobic sand was also used.
At equilibrium, DNAPL …

A Study Of The Reactions Of P-Dipiperidino Benzene And Its Synthesis From 1,4-Dicyano-1,4-Dipiperidinocyclohexane, Ilias Konstantinos Dorziotis
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Following a classical synthesis of PCP2 Williams attempted to prepare l,4-diphenyl-1,4-dipiperidino cyclohexane 41 . This approach involved the preparation of 1,4- dicyano-1,4-dipiperidinocyclohexane 7 and the subsequent decyanation of the compound with phenylmagnesium bromide to produce 4. This attempt failed, however, as only the monophenylated product, 8, was thought to be obtained. This product had unique reactivity, producing a blue intermediate upon treatment with halogen in both aqueous and non aqueous media. The same intermediate was produced upon irradiation of a chloroform solution of this product with sunlight or UV light in a UV chamber, with the …

An Erasable Optical Memory Based On Stimulated Electronic Transition Concept, James D. Satira
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Erasable optical memory systems with a high storage density and a large data transfer rate are required for many real time data acquisition systems such as those placed aboard NASA's space born platforms. A new concept for erasable optical memory involving stimulated electronic transitions (SET) will meet these requirements. The SET concept useful in erasable optical storage systems was demonstrated in MgS and SrS doped with Eu and Sm. The optical properties of these materials were studied. The reading and writing wavelengths for these samples were determined to be 950 and 514 nm respectively. The peaks of the emission spectra …

We measured third‐order, nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) for a series of tetrabenzporphyrins in solution in tetrahydrofuran at 532 nm using degenerate four‐wave mixing with picosecond pulses and obtained values of molecular second hyperpolarizability 〈γ〉. The corresponding macroscopic χ(3) values calculated for nine compounds with different substituent groups are four to five orders larger than CS2. For five of the compounds the χ(3) values are in the range 1.2–2.8×10−8 esu. Our experiments indicate that the nonlinearity is predominately electronic in origin with a response time faster than the 15 ps resolution of our system.

FK 506, a powerful immunosuppressant that blocks allograft rejection by preventing T-cell activation, binds to an 11-kDa protein called the FK 506-binding protein (FKBP). Like cyclophilin, a cytosolic protein that binds another immunosuppressant, cyclosporin A, FKBP possesses peptidylprolyl cis-trans isomerase activity. We have isolated a genomic clone encoding the yeast FKBP (FKB1). The gene encodes a protein of 114 amino acids having a calculated M(r) of 12,158. Disruption of the gene shows that FKB1 is not essential for growth. A search of translated nucleic acid data bases revealed bacterial FKBP homologs in Neisseria meningiditis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Comparison of the …

Wildlife Damage Education And College Curricula, James Caslick
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
University students, particularly those enrolled in natural resources programs, make up one of the smallest, yet potentially most important and influential audiences for wildlife damage professionals. Considering that these students will be tomorrow's natural resources technicians, biologists, and administrators, I feel that it is critical that we provide them factual information about wildlife damage to increase their awareness of potential problems and solutions, and increase their ability to make well-informed decisions. An important aspect of education is accurate audience identification and association. This is not an easy task, however, as today's audience is collectively a moving target. Once primarily rural …

Perceptions And Realities: When Does 2 + 2 = 5?, Robert M. Timm
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
The theme of this conference, "Human and Wildlife Interactions: Public Perceptions and Management Realities," suggests to me that the reality of what wildlife managers do is often affected by the public's perception of the problem. In considering animal damage, there's the question of which solutions the public fords appropriate and acceptable. Attitudes and perceptions nowadays, whether correct or based on misinformation, are often translated into policy and law. "Management realities"- why can't we just go ahead and solve the problem the way we want to? After all, we're the scientists and wildlife managers; we know the problem better than anyone. …
Interactions Between People And Wildlife In Urbanizing Landscapes, John Hadidian
Interactions Between People And Wildlife In Urbanizing Landscapes, John Hadidian
Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
In little more than 100 years, America has been transformed from a rural to an urban society in which 8 out of every 10 people live in cities or associated metropolitan areas. This change has affected the way that people interact with wildlife and has introduced new and unique situations in which human-wildlife conflicts arise and must be dealt with. Most urban wildlife problems occur in and around primary residences or nodes (e.g., airports, golf courses, lake fronts) and involve only a few species. This relationship may change as urban landscapes mature or expand through restoration efforts, or as more …

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
We gather here and reflect on successes in wildlife conservation, restoration, and management; and make plans for more beneficial actions. Significant achievements have been madein public education and wildlife management, as shown by increases in some wildlife populations. But a continuing pressing challenge involves responding to some wildlife population declines, as well as wildlife damage and nuisance situations, as the human population increases and dominates the landscape. As you well know, management successes involve imagination and dedication of people, such as those gathered here. Your efforts play an important role in helping to manage wildlife, and provide associated outdoor recreational …

Eastern Wildlife Damage Control Conference: 5th (1991)
During 1990 and 1991, feral pigeon (Columbia tivia) baiting programs using compound DRC-1339 were con in 6 cities in Kentucky and Tennessee. U. S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Damage Control (ADC) personnel evaluated each problem site, selected bait sites, supervised prebaidng, mixed, and toxic bait. In most cases, local personnel conducted the prebaiting and disposed of dead birds. Seven pigeon flocks con 95-735 birds were reduced by up to 100% with 1 or 2 baitings with 0.37 % DRC-1339-treated bait. Most birds died at their areas or on rooftops where they were not …
Thermal Desorption Of Contaminated Soils, Hsi-Ming Sung
Thermal Desorption Of Contaminated Soils, Hsi-Ming Sung
Theses
A new method by employing the heating probe for the in-situ cleanup of soils that are contaminated with volatile organic hazardous substances is explored. This investigation is a laboratory simulation that was aimed to evaluate the feasibility of desorption of volatile organic compoumds (VOCs) from soil, and to determine the efficiency of the heating probe for maximum desorption.
Two organic compounds, Trichloroethylene, Carbon tetrachloride, were selected as simulants. The experimental results demonstrate that the removal efficiency range from 97.65% to >99.95% of Trichloroethylene and 98.14% to >99.95% of Carbon tetrachloride can be recovered for a 24 hour interval with a …
Analysis Of Chemical Contaminants In Tissue Samples From Two Species Of Fish, Michael David Reive
Analysis Of Chemical Contaminants In Tissue Samples From Two Species Of Fish, Michael David Reive
Theses
Interaction of marine species with chemical pollutants within the marine ecosystem is extremely complex and difficult to interpret. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the effect of an exposure of treated municipal wastewater on winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) and striped bass (Morone saxatilis). Fish from two locations were exposed to different concentrations of wastewater. Half of the fish from each tank were sacrificed, and the remaining fish were given a depuration period in unpolluted water. Tissue samples were composited, soxhlet extracted and passed through a florisil cleanup column. Gas chromatography, was used to analyze for hexachlorobenzene, hexachlorobutadiene, Aroclor …

Anaerobic Biological Treatment Of Incinerator Ash To Immobilize Toxic Metal Residues, Uma Parasar
Theses
In this study, a reliable and inexpensive method for biologically immobilizing toxic heavy metal residues present in very high concentrations in incinerator ash was developed. Desulfovibrzo, a genus of sulfate-reducing bacteria was cultured and treated with combined ash under anaerobic conditions. The carbon source, lactate, and the electron acceptor, sulfate, were provided to the cultures for their normal growth. Since the sulfate reducers utilize organic matter using sulfate as the oxidizing agent, sulfides are the corresponding end products of the reaction. Ash was added to well established cultures of desu f ovibrio. Immobilization of the heavy metals in the ash …

Gas Chromatographic Method For Determination Of 28 Volatile Organic Compounds Emitted From A Sewerage Plant, Yeming Sun
Theses
In this study, 28 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the Linden Roselle Sewerage Authority Plant (LRSA) were monitered. The determination by gas chromatography (GC) is presented. This work emphasizes the collection of whole air samples, using a canister-based sampling system with cryogenic concentration. An appropriate temperature program was selected to obtain the best sample separation. The procedure for the identification of 28 standard gas mixture was achieved by comparing the chromatograms of sample with those of the specific groups of target compounds, as well as by comparing the sample with the results from GC Mass spectrometeric analysis. Because of …

Phenomena Relating To Charge In Insulators: Macroscopic Effects And Microscopic Causes, Jacques Cazaux, Claude Le Gressus
Scanning Microscopy
Conservation of current under steady-state conditions makes it possible to determine the sign of charges trapped in an insulator subjected to ionizing radiation. The maximum value of the surface potential can thus be estimated.
On the basis of a given trapped charge distribution, the pattern of the electrical field and of the potential can thus be established, and the influence of the shape of the sample and its environment can be clearly shown. Change of trapped charges with time (at the start and after irradiation) is then examined. Finally, the microscopic causes of trapping of charge is suggested by analogy …

Ground Water Quality And Management In Minnesota, Jeanette H. Leete
Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science
Minnesota is known for its abundant surface water - lakes, rivers, and streams - and much emphasis is placed on managing these priceless resources, yet it is ground water that supplies drinking water to about 75 percent of the state's population, and ground water that agriculture depends on for 88 percent of irrigation water. While ground water quality can be and is impacted by activities at the land surface, the greatest proportion of Minnesota's ground water is still suitable for most uses.

Observation Of Eliminative Cationic Polymerization Within Van Der Waals Clusters, M. Samy El-Shall, K. E. Schriver
Chemistry Publications
We report the first observation of eliminative cationic polymerization within van der Waals (vdW) clusters following electron impact ionization at pressures of 10−8 Torr. The elimination reactions of C2H3Cl+ within the clusters terminate after three successive steps, each involving elimination of HCl or Cl. The results provide a mechanism for the early stages of gas phase cationic polymerization of vinyl chloride and demonstrate the feasibility of using vdW clusters as a means of studying gas phase cationic polymerization.
