Visitor Use Of Interpretive Facilities At Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming, Rizal Bukhari

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Visitors expect to a gain high-quality outdoor experiences at any recreation site they visit. In order to support that effort, most recreation managers utilize interpretive facilities to educate and inform visitors about the site. It is important for interpretive managers to be aware of what kind of interpretive media could best be used in a given setting for the type of visitor anticipated. To accomplish this goal, it is necessary to understand visitors' behavior and incorporate that understanding into the interpretive planning process.

This study looks at visitor use of interpretive facilities provided at Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming. The …

Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Small Molecule Binding To [Cyclopentadienyl-Ru-No] And [Rh-Co] Electrophilic Centers, Anna Svetlanova May 1996

Thermodynamics And Kinetics Of Small Molecule Binding To [Cyclopentadienyl-Ru-No] And [Rh-Co] Electrophilic Centers, Anna Svetlanova

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This work is concentrated on the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of water, alcohols, alkyl halides, ethers, and lactones bound and activated by the electrophilic [Cp'Ru(N0)]+2 and [Cp’Ru (NO)(CH3)] + centers (Cp' = cyclopentadienyl group). Counterions in these systems include OSO2CF3- (OTf`) and [(3, 5-(CF3)2C6H3)4B]- ([BAr4']-). The displacement of OTf- in Cp'Ru(N0) (0Tf)2 by H20 in dichloromethane is exothermic but entropically unfavorable due to the required reorganization of the solvent cage around released triflate ions. Thermodynamic parameters are also determined for OTf …

The Advanced Glycation End Product, NE-(Carboxymethyl)Lysine, Is A Product Of Both Lipid Peroxidation And Glycoxidation Reactions, Min-Xin Fu, Jesus R. Requena, Alicia J. Jenkins, Timothy J. Lyons, John W. Baynes, Suzanne R. Thorpe

Faculty Publications

Nepsilon-(Carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) is an advanced glycation end product formed on protein by combined nonenzymatic glycation and oxidation (glycoxidation) reactions. We now report that CML is also formed during metal-catalyzed oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the presence of protein. During copper-catalyzed oxidation in vitro, the CML content of low density lipoprotein increased in concert with conjugated dienes but was independent of the presence of the Amadori compound, fructoselysine, on the protein. CML was also formed in a time-dependent manner in RNase incubated under aerobic conditions in phosphate buffer containing arachidonate or linoleate; only trace amounts of CML were formed from …

Magnetic Properties Of Nanometer-Size Copt Particles, Sy_Hwang Liou, Yi Liu, S.S. Malhotra, M. Yu, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1996

Magnetic Properties Of Nanometer-Size Copt Particles, Sy_Hwang Liou, Yi Liu, S.S. Malhotra, M. Yu, David J. Sellmyer

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

We have prepared nanometer-size, isolated CoPt particles. The particles in the range of 100–300 nm in diameter were formed by annealing thin films in the temperature range of 550–800 °C. Films with magnetic coercivity as high as 30 kOe were achieved. The results indicate that the high magnetic coercivity was obtained because the crystallite size approaches that of noninteracting single-domain particles.

Magnetic Viscosity And Switching Volumes Of Annealed Fe/Pt Multilayers, C.P. Luo, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer Apr 1996

Magnetic Viscosity And Switching Volumes Of Annealed Fe/Pt Multilayers, C.P. Luo, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic viscosity and the phenomenon of the sweep-rate dependence of the coercivity are important for the characterization of magnetic recording media. The activation volume of magnetization reversal or switching volume is directly related to medium noise. The magnetic viscosity behavior of annealed Fe/Pt multilayers was studied and the switching volumes were obtained by both measurements of the sweep-rate dependence of coercivity and time dependence of magnetization. It is found that samples with larger coercivities have smaller switching volumes, and an estimate of the magnetic grain diameter is about 9 nm. The coercivity mechanisms are also discussed.

High Coercivity Rare Earth–Cobalt Films, S.S. Malhotra, Yi Liu, Z.S. Shan, Sy_Hwang Liou, D.C. Stafford, David J. Sellmyer

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

Rare earth–cobalt (RCo, R=Sm, Pr) films with thicknesses from 30 to 700 nm have been prepared with and without a Cr underlayer by dc magnetron sputtering from a R2Co7 composite target. The as-deposited SmCo films with a Cr underlayer (SmCo║Cr) have magnetic coercivities of about 500–2800 Oe and the PrCo║Cr films have coercivities of about 100–300 Oe, but after annealing at 500 °C coercivities as high as 31 kOe for SmCo║Cr films and 10 kOe for PrCo║Cr films were observed. The as-deposited PrCo films are composed mostly of an amorphous phase with about 30 vol % of …

Superparamagnetic Magnetic Force Microscopy Tips, P.F. Hopkins, John Moreland, S.S. Malhotra, Sy_Hwang Liou

Sy-Hwang Liou Publications

We report on magnetic force microscopy (MFM) images of a thin-film magnetic recording head taken using batch micromachined silicon tips coated with nanocomposite Fe60 (SiO2)40 and Fe70 (SiO2)30 films. The small Fe grain size (<10 nm) and dilute Fe volume fraction (0.29–0.4) of these granular films produce tip coatings of low remanence and essentially zero coercivity, reduced by the superparamagnetic properties of these films. We have used these tips to obtain MFM images of the write field of the head with high spatial and magnetic-field resolution. In comparison to images taken using commercial Co85Cr15-coated tips, these MFM images show reduced tip memory effects and clearly delineate the gap field from the pole pieces.

Measurements Of The Complex Dielectric Constant Of Volcanic Ash From 4 To 19 Ghz, R. J. Adams, Warren F. Perger, William I. Rose, A. Kostinski Apr 1996

Measurements Of The Complex Dielectric Constant Of Volcanic Ash From 4 To 19 Ghz, R. J. Adams, Warren F. Perger, William I. Rose, A. Kostinski

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

Dielectric data in volcanic ash at weather radar wavelengths (centimeter range) are extremely sparse and are crucial for radar sensing of ash clouds and for imaging of volcanic terrains. This study extends previous data to include a wavelength range of 1.5–7.5 cm and volcanic ash compositions of 50–75% silica. The real part of the complex permittivity, ε′, of volcanic ash is 6 ± 0.5 (1σ) for all wavelengths. The imaginary part, ε″, ranges from 0.08 to 0.27. Both ε′ and ε″ show higher values at lower SiO2 concentration. It is safe to assume in any weather radar applications that the …

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

ISTEA significantly changed the law governing metropolitan transportation planning. In response to the changes introduced by ISTEA, FHWA and FTA issued revised planning regulations on October 28, 1993, setting new requirements for the transportation planning processes. The requirements are presented in 23 CFR Part 450 and 49 CFR Part 613, Statewide and Metropolitan Planning Final Rule. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA) also imposed rigorous new transportation planning requirements in metropolitan areas, particularly those that are designated nonattainment or maintenance areas for air quality. In support of the implementation of the revised regulations, FHW A and FTA jointly …

Ground Water Movement Through The Highly-Fractured Crystalline Core Of A Large-Scale, Foreland Uplift, Roy Al Gorge Arch, South-Central Colorado, Timothy L. Clarey Apr 1996

Ground Water Movement Through The Highly-Fractured Crystalline Core Of A Large-Scale, Foreland Uplift, Roy Al Gorge Arch, South-Central Colorado, Timothy L. Clarey

Dissertations

The objectives of this study were twofold: ( 1) to examine the well-exposed, basement core of the Royal Gorge arch as a large-scale, field test of ground water flow through a fractured, crystalline, aquifer system; and (2) to devise a method to more accurately determine the direction of maximum aperture of a fractured aquifer through structural and hydrogeologic analysis.

The recognition of a preferred direction of maximum aperture in a fractured aquifer remains an important hydrogeologic consideration because flow through a fracture is proportional to the cube of the aperture width. Previous studies of hydraulic directions using fracture orientation techniques …

Theory Of Dipole Flow In Uniform Anisotropic Aquifers, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Glenn Ledder Apr 1996

Theory Of Dipole Flow In Uniform Anisotropic Aquifers, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, Glenn Ledder

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A theory of dipole flow is developed to model flow induced by a vertical circulation well consisting of injection and extraction chambers in a single borehole. Included in the theory are an analytical description of the kinematic flow structure around a vertical circulation well and the drawdown in the well chambers. Using Stokes’ stream function, simple criteria are derived to determine the region of intensive recirculation. This region extends (from the dipole center) approximately five distances between chamber centers in the radial direction and two distances between chamber centers in both vertical directions. The vertical scale does not depend on …

Two-Photon Quantum Interference Polarization Spectroscopy: Measurements Of Transition Matrix Elements In Atomic Rubidium, Alexander I. Beger Apr 1996

Two-Photon Quantum Interference Polarization Spectroscopy: Measurements Of Transition Matrix Elements In Atomic Rubidium, Alexander I. Beger

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The estimation of the adequacy of theoretical calculations on the atomic structure requires availability of the precise experimental data on radiative properties of the atoms. Such data is also required in astronomy and some important areas of technology. The lack of precision of traditional spectroscopic studies of atom presents a fundamental obstacle for progress in these areas. For example, in atomic rubidium, the best precision of the traditional spectroscopic results is on the order of about 1 - 5%, which does not allow for clear assessment of the latest sophisticated theoretical calculations on atomic rubidium structure, with emphasis on different, …

Esperance Region Catchment Planning Strategy, John Platt, Brendan Nicholas, Rod Short, Stephen Gee Apr 1996

Esperance Region Catchment Planning Strategy, John Platt, Brendan Nicholas, Rod Short, Stephen Gee

Natural resources published reports

The Esperance Region Catchment Planning Strategy project was initiated by the Esperance Land Conservation District Committee.

This report provides a reference document for farmers and other land managers such as government agencies and local government, and should help them to strategically focus their catchment planning activities.

It will help land managers to identify the major catchments and land systems in their area, management issues for long term sustainability, and a regional strategy for catchment planning.

Catchment planning involves both technical and social processes.

Technically it is a process of planning the sustainable use of water resources within a catchment.

A Queuing Analysis Of Bandwidth Allocation Schemes For Compressed Video, Saurab Nog, Carl J. Beckmann Mar 1996

A Queuing Analysis Of Bandwidth Allocation Schemes For Compressed Video, Saurab Nog, Carl J. Beckmann

Computer Science Technical Reports

Video and audio compression techniques allow continuous media streams to be transmitted at bit rates that are a function of the delivered quality of service. Digital networks will be increasingly used for the transmission of such continuous media streams. This paper describes an admission control policy in which the quality of service is negotiated at stream initiation, and is a function of both the desired quality of service and the available bandwidth resources. The advantage of this approach is the ability to robustly service large numbers of users, while providing increased quality of service during low usage periods. Several simple …

Temporal Variability Of Organic C And Nitrate In A Shallow Aquifer, D. E. Clay, S. A. Clay, T. B. Moorman, K. Brix-Davis, K. A. Scholes, A. R. Bender

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

The loading of organic substrates into shallow aquifers may follow seasonal cycles, which will impact the transport and fate of agrichemicals. The objective of this research was to measure temporal changes in the groundwater dissolved organic C (DOC) and nitrate concentrations. Groundwater monitoring wells were installed and sediment samples from the aquifer were collected in 1991. Sediment samples were used to evaluate denitrification potentials, while water samples were collected at periodic intervals in 1992 and 1993 from the surface of the aquifer. Water samples were analyzed for nitrate-N and DOC-C. Denitrification was observed in sediment amended with nitrate and incubated …

Chemical Wave Propagation In Hele-Shaw Cells And Porous Media, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards Mar 1996

Chemical Wave Propagation In Hele-Shaw Cells And Porous Media, D. A. Vasquez, J. W. Wilder, Boyd F. Edwards

All Physics Faculty Publications

Chemical waves induce density gradients in fluids which may lead to convection. This paper studies the convective effects on chemical waves propagating in porous media or in fluids confined between two parallel vertical walls. Chemical waves in the iodate–arsenous acid system are modeled with a one variable reaction‐diffusion equation. The fluid flow is modeled using Darcy’s law. A linear stability analysis on convectionless fronts shows a transition to convection. The full nonlinear equations describing the convective front are solved numerically on a vertical slab. Convective fronts propagate faster than convectionless fronts. Near the onset of convection, the fronts are raised …

A System For Structured Management Of Hypermedia Resources For The World Wide Web, Kevin L. Marlowe Mar 1996

A System For Structured Management Of Hypermedia Resources For The World Wide Web, Kevin L. Marlowe

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The World Wide Web (WWW) is arguably the preferred method for disseminating information across the Internet. Most of the work to support the advancement of WWW technology has focused on servers used in storing and retrieving information, browsers for viewing this information, and editors or filters for creating the information.

One area which has received little attention is that of actually managing this information at the local host. This thesis describes the development of a means for organizing local data prior to its publishing on the WWW, a method for gathering local pages together and preparing them for distribution, and …

Using the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis as the reference standard, this study evaluated the sensitivity, specificity and kappa statistic of gross pathology (abattoir postmortem inspection), histopathology, and parallel or series combinations of the two for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in 430 elk and red deer. Two histopathology interpretations were evaluated: histopathology I, where the presence of lesions compatible with tuberculosis was considered positive, and histopathology II, where lesions compatible with tuberculosis or a select group of additional possible diagnoses were considered positive. In the 73 animals from which M. bovis was isolated, gross lesions of tuberculosis were most often in …

Role Of Alfalfa In Our Farming Operation, Larry Jeffries Feb 1996

Role Of Alfalfa In Our Farming Operation, Larry Jeffries

Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference

Our farming operation consists of 214 acres. We raise 14,000 pounds of tobacco, have a purebred beef cattle herd, and sell hay. Alfalfa is the only one of the three sources of income that we can project an increase for 1996.

Our alfalfa cash hay sales have increased for several years due to the increase of suburban horse owners in the Louisville area.

I think it is important to have a written plan for 1996. We wouldn't think of making a long trip without a map, especially into strange territory - we farmers are in strange territory. If you don't …

Identifying And Exploiting Concurrency In Object-Based Real-Time Systems, Guohui Yu Jan 1996

Identifying And Exploiting Concurrency In Object-Based Real-Time Systems, Guohui Yu

Dissertations

The use of object-based mechanisms, i.e., abstract data types (ADTs), for constructing software systems can help to decrease development costs, increase understandability and increase maintainability. However, execution efficiency may be sacrificed due to the large number of procedure calls, and due to contention for shared ADTs in concurrent systems. Such inefficiencies are a concern in real-time applications that have stringent timing requirements. To address these issues, the potentially inefficient procedure calls are turned into a source of concurrency via asynchronous procedure calls (ARPCs), and contention for shared ADTS is reduced via ADT cloning. A framework for concurrency analysis in object-based …

Continuous Monitoring Of Volatile Organic Compound Emissions Using Microtrap Based Injection Technique And Gas Chromatography, Wenjun Chen

Theses

A microtrap is made by packing a small diameter tubing with an adsorbent. The microtrap can be rapidly heated with a pulse of electrical current resulting in a sharp desorption that can act as an injection for GC separation. The microtrap can be used in several configurations to concentrate and inject sample in continuous, on-line monitoring system.

In this research a laboratory scale catalytic incinerator was set up and volatile organic compounds in the incinerator effluents were monitored using the microtrap based injection systems. The detection systems used were gas chromatography and nonmethane organic carbon (NMOC) analyzer. Conventional sample valve, …

Transportable Information Agents, Robert Gray, Daniela Rus, David Kotz Jan 1996

Transportable Information Agents, Robert Gray, Daniela Rus, David Kotz

Computer Science Technical Reports

We have designed and implemented autonomous software agents. Autonomous software agents navigate independently through a heterogeneous network. They are capable of sensing the network configuration, monitoring software conditions, and interacting with other agents. Autonomous agents are implemented as transportable programs, e.g., programs that are capable of suspending execution, moving to a different machine, and starting from where they left off. We illustrate the intelligent behavior of autonomous agents in the context of distributed information-gathering tasks.
