High Coercivity Smfesic Films Fabricated By Multilayer Sputtering, S.Y. Zhang, Z.S. Shan, Yi Liu, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

SmFeSiC thin films have been obtained by sputtering SmFe/C(Si) multilayers with a Ta underlayer on Si substrates and subsequently annealing at 700° C. The coercivity of the SmF films strongly depends on the sputtering and annealing conditions. The influence of the thickness of the Ta underlayer, the thickness ratio of SmFe to C(Si), the argon pressure and heat treatment In- plane Coercivities up to 7.2 kOe and squareness of 0.94 were obtained.

Lorentz Microscopy Observation Of Magnetic Grains In Co-Sm // Cr Films, Yi Liu, Z.S. Shan, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

This paper presents our recent Lorentz microscopy study of magnetic domain structure and its relation to the nanostructure of Co-Sm films. The magnetic domains were imaged by Foucault Lorentz mode and the corresponding nanostructure was revealed by bright field and high resolution images. The nanostructure is composed of clusters of 20 nm grown on Cr grains. Each cluster is formed by the amorphous matrix and about 5 nm crystallites distributed in the matrix. It is found that each cluster forms a magnetic grain. Such magnetic grains show uniform contrast near the magnetic domain wall, and correspond to the switching volume …

A Study On Electrochemical Oxidation Of Reduced Nicotinamide Coenzyme Nadh In Organic Media, Fangzu Yang, Huihuang Wu, Shukai Xu, Shaomin Zhou Aug 1996

A Study On Electrochemical Oxidation Of Reduced Nicotinamide Coenzyme Nadh In Organic Media, Fangzu Yang, Huihuang Wu, Shukai Xu, Shaomin Zhou

Journal of Electrochemistry

The behaviour of electrochemical oxidation of the reduced nicotinamide coenzyme NADH on glassy carbon was studied and some kinetic parameters were measured by means of voltammometry in the N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and 1,4-dioxane media respectively. The eletrochemical oxidation of NADH shows completely irriversable both in the two solvents, and the diagnostic experiments support that the process involves a fast chemical step. The oxidation rate and the diffusion coefficient of NADH in DMP are smaller than those in 1,4-dioxane, but the response current is more stable in DMF. The experimental results are discussed by solvent effects.

Managing Multiple Information Sources Through Ontologies: Relationship Between Vocabulary Heterogeneity And Loss Of Information, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Arantza Illarramendi, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

The ability to deal with a huge number of independent and heterogeneous repositories is the most critical problem in Global Information Systems. One approach to enable efficient query processing is by utilizing semantic descriptions (organized as ontologies) of such repositories whenever available.

In this context semantic relationships among ontologies can be used Query Processors. Three kind of relationships are considered: synonyms and hypernyms. Using synonyms the semantic of the query is preserved; however, when synonyms are not available and hypernyms or hyponyms are used there exists some loss of information that must be measured.

Could A Local Group X-Ray Halo Affect The X-Ray And Microwave Backgrounds?, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Aug 1996

Could A Local Group X-Ray Halo Affect The X-Ray And Microwave Backgrounds?, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

Suto et al. have suggested that an X-ray halo in the Local Group might explain both the observed low-energy excess in the X-ray background and the quadrupole anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background. Recent observations of poor groups of galaxies by the ROSAT PSPC set reasonable limits on how extensive and dense such a halo could be. The poor groups most similar to the Local Group do not have a detectable halo, and the upper limits of these observations suggest that any Local Group halo would be nearly 2 orders of magnitude too tenuous to produce the effects that Suto …

Directed Ortho-Metalation Of The Three Methyl Anisoles In Various Media, Carl Friesen Aug 1996

Directed Ortho-Metalation Of The Three Methyl Anisoles In Various Media, Carl Friesen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Directed ortho-metalation (DoM) is a very useful alternative to electrophillic aromatic substitution (EAS) for the synthesis of substituted aromatic compounds. DoM is highly regiospecific providing metalation chiefly in the ortho-position. However, lateral (a-) metalation of an alkyl side-chain and ortho-metalation of a second ortho-position can compete. Investigation of the three methylanisoles was therefore undertaken to determine the interplay between these factors and to discover metalation conditions to achieve selectivity. This goal was uniquely achieved for p-methylanisole where conditions were discovered which allowed > 85% ortho-metalation as determined by GC analysis with virturally no competing lateral metalation. Three derivitives of this ortho-lithio …

Bulletin 4329 - Environmental Hazards Of Farming In Western Australia, Greg Hamilton, Ian Foster, Philip M. Goulding Aug 1996

Bulletin 4329 - Environmental Hazards Of Farming In Western Australia, Greg Hamilton, Ian Foster, Philip M. Goulding

Bulletins 4000 -

This Bulletin is one of a series on crop establishment practices which minimise soil disturbance and improve stubble retention. In partnership with primary producers, Agriculture Western Australia 1s focussed on improved and profitable farming which conserves or improves the quality of the State's soil resources.

Agricultural land in Western Australia is naturally fragile and susceptible to degradation. Salinity and wind erosion are the most visible and significant forms of degradation, but all forms are present over large areas of agricultural land (House of Representatives Enquiry into Land Degradation in Western Australia, 1988).

The fragility of Western Australia's soils has been …

On Three Dimensional Digital Topology And Its Application To Image Processing., Punam Kumar Saha Dr. Jul 1996

On Three Dimensional Digital Topology And Its Application To Image Processing., Punam Kumar Saha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Digital topology provides a sound mathematical basis for object classification, counting and labeling, border tracking, contour filling, thinning, segmentation and many other image processing applications. An important characteristic of topo- logical properties is that they are invariant under translation, rotation, and more generally under any elastic deformation. The analysis of three dimensional (3D) digital images has generated increasing interest with the rapid growth of 3D image processing applications including computer vision. 3D digital images are common input/output media in the several application domains of image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision among which 3D medical imaging is of particular interest. …

Reduction And Acetylation Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene By A Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strain, Daniel R. Noguera, David L. Freedman Jul 1996

Reduction And Acetylation Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene By A Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strain, Daniel R. Noguera, David L. Freedman

Publications

Aerobic and anoxic biotransformation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT) was examined by using a Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain isolated from a plant treating propellant manufacturing wastewater. DNT biotransformation in the presence and absence of oxygen was mostly reductive and was representative of the type of cometabolic transformations that occur when a high concentration of an easily degradable carbon source is present. P. aeruginosa reduced both nitro groups on DNT, with the formation of mainly 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene and 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene and small quantities of 2,4-diaminotoluene. Acetylation of the arylamines was a significant reaction. 4-Acetamide-2-nitrotoluene and the novel compounds 2-acetamide-4-nitrotoluene, 4-acet-amide-2-aminotoluene, and 2,4-diacetamidetoluene were identified as DNT …

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock Jul 1996

The Real Cost Of Beef: A Monetary Assessment Of The Environmental Degradation Caused By Beef Production, Carolyn Babcock

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The environmental degradation caused by beef production is severe. The current literature assesses the ecological damage, but falls short of assigning a per pound dollar amount to reflect the real cost of beef. In the United States, most of the environmental focus has been centered around the use of public lands for grazing and the grazing fee the government considers appropriate. The fee covers the maintenance of the grazing program, which includes maintenance of the actual land. This paper will concentrate on beef-related environmental degradation and select specific damage for monetary valuation.

Comparison Of Positive Screening And Confimatory Results From Federally Mandated Drug Testing Of Urine, Mary M. Stuck

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to analyze the accuracy of FDA approved immunoassays for the detection of drug positive urine samples.

Federal civilian employees are tested under the strict protocol of the Department of Health and Human Services mandatory guidelines for federal workplace drug testing programs. The guidelines provide for a two instrument testing protocol for the analysis of urine samples. The first is an FDA approved immunoassay. Samples which test positive on this screening immunoassay are then submitted for confirmatory testing with the "gold standard" gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Agency monthly drug testing summaries, required under the DHHS guidelines …

Concentrations, Complexation And Speciation Of Total Dissolved Zinc In The Chesapeake Bay, Charles William Henry Iii Jul 1996

Concentrations, Complexation And Speciation Of Total Dissolved Zinc In The Chesapeake Bay, Charles William Henry Iii

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

This is the first research to examine the horizontal, vertical, and temporal variability of total dissolved zinc, organic complexation of zinc, and zinc speciation in the Chesapeake Bay. Filtered (0.45μm) surface and bottom water samples were taken along the salinity gradient of the Chesapeake Bay in October 1993, March 1995, July 1995, and October 1995. Analysis by Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DP ASV) indicated that total dissolved zinc concentrations in the Bay ranged from 2.9 ± 0.7nM to 38.8 ± 2nM. Total zinc was highest at the northern end of the Bay (low salinity), approximately 10 times lower at …

Boundary Conditions For Convergent Radial Tracer Tests And Effect Of Well Bore Mixing Volume, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, John David Logan Jul 1996

Boundary Conditions For Convergent Radial Tracer Tests And Effect Of Well Bore Mixing Volume, Vitaly A. Zlotnik, John David Logan

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Convergent radial flow tracer tests have a complex spatial nonaxial transport structure caused by the flow in the vicinity of the injection well and its finite mixing volume. The formulation of the boundary value problem, and especially the treatment of the boundary conditions at the injection well, is nontrivial. Hodgkinson and Lever [1983], Moench [1989, 1991], and Welty and Gelhar [1994] have developed different models and methods for the analysis of breakthrough curves in the extraction well. To extend interpretation techniques to breakthrough curves in the zone between injection and extraction wells, an analysis of conventional transport models is given, …

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana Jul 1996

Comprehensive Conjunctive-Use Management Of Connected Surface Water Groundwater Systems Using Stochastic Inputs And Uncertainties, Seshadri Suryanarayana

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A comprehensive conjunctive-use management model is developed. The dynamics of flow and solute transport processes in connected surface water groundwater systems are integrated by a dual programming management model. The governing aquifer flow parameters and streamflows are treated as stochastic random processes. Multiple realizations of the random field are generated and are explicitly incorporated in a non-linear optimization model along with other system, environmental, and management constraints. To facilitate management of large aquifer systems, a linked simulation-optimization approach is used. The simulation program generates the response matrices for flow and transport processes. The management model then determines optimal well discharges …

Influence Of Rice Production On The Quality Of Water In Tailwater Collection Reservoirs, R. A. Dewell, T. L. Lavy Jun 1996

Influence Of Rice Production On The Quality Of Water In Tailwater Collection Reservoirs, R. A. Dewell, T. L. Lavy

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

Since maintaining high water quality standards in the state remains a high priority, monitoring for pesticides in water sources must continue. Determining the type, concentration, and characteristics of any pesticides present in water supplies are essential to the overall assessment of water quality. Five independent locations, implementing contained water management systems and recyclable water, were monitored in 1995 and 1996. Irrigation, runoff, and pond water samples were collected every 10 to 14 days between permanent flood establishment and draining. Water samples were transported to the laboratory and extracted for 16 pesticides using solid phase extraction (SPE) techniques. Quantification and confirmation …

Variable angle of incidence spectroscopic ellipsometry was used to determine the optical constants near the band edge of boron carbide (B5C) thin films deposited on glass and n-type Si(111) via plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition. The index of refraction n, the extinction coefficient k, and the absorption coefficient are reported in the photon energy spectrum between 1.24 and 4 eV. Ellipsometry analysis of B5C films on silicon indicates a graded material, while the optical constants of B5C on glass are homogeneous. Line shape analyses of absorption data for the films on glass indicate …

Expectations And Future Opportunities For Fish And Wildlife Extension Programs, Jack H. Berryman Jun 1996

Expectations And Future Opportunities For Fish And Wildlife Extension Programs, Jack H. Berryman

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

The charge to the panel was really in the form of a question: What do customers and cooperators expect and what are the future opportunities for fish and wildlife extension programs?

It's a pretty risky subject. Each state is different; each has different problems and opportunities. And, most of the practitioners—those who know most about it— are here in this audience.

Pete Petoskey and Jim Miller have already presented some historical background and a perspective for the future. And, the fact of these workshops and a glance at the program is clear evidence of the progress being made. The professionalism, …

Public Issues Education In Natural Resources: Speaking As A Professional, Dave Cleaves, Paul Adams

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

One certainty these days is that public policy will continue to shape the future of forestry. We foresters seem to take what's served up, wishing we had more influence on the ingredients and how they are prepared. We need to assert more leadership in providing forestry knowledge to citizens and decision-makers. However, information delivery is not enough; we need to be involved in the process of policy as well as its content. Technical information and good science will not prevail on their own. We don't have to push a particular option to be effective. We can use our skills and …

Professional Society, State Agency, And Extension Partnerships Needed For Formal Continuing Education Of Wildlife Professionals, Brian K. Miller Jun 1996

Professional Society, State Agency, And Extension Partnerships Needed For Formal Continuing Education Of Wildlife Professionals, Brian K. Miller

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

While professionals readily desire continuing education programs to sharpen and update their skills, distractions, demanding schedules, lack of employer support, and expense often create barriers for regular continuing education attendance. Many professions such as accountants, pharmacists, and lawyers have a formal certification criteria which requires post-graduate testing to obtain certification and then participation in continuing education to maintain certification. The prestige of becoming a CPA, a licensed engineer, or a member of the bar carries an assurance of a certain level of competence and often translates into higher salaries for those who have achieved it. Therefore, there is a motivation …

Observer: An Approach For Query Processing In Global Information Systems Based On Interoperation Across Pre-Existing Ontologies, Eduardo Mena, Vipul Kashyap, Amit P. Sheth, Arantza Illarramendi

Kno.e.sis Publications

The huge number of autonomous and heterogeneous data repositories accessible on the “global information infrastructure” makes it impossible for users to be aware of the locations structure/organization, query languages and semantics of the data in various repositories. There is a critical need to complement current browsing, navigational and information retrieval techniques with a strategy that focuses on information content and semantics. In any strategy that focuses on information content, the most critical problem is that of different vocabularies used to describe similar information across domains. We discuss a scalable approach for vocabulary sharing. The objects in the repositories are represented …

Bioaccumulation Of Methyl Mercury Through A Food Chain, J. T. Knight Jun 1996

Bioaccumulation Of Methyl Mercury Through A Food Chain, J. T. Knight

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The bioaccumulation of mercury through the food chain has received much attention in Arkansas during the last three years. The discovery of mercury contamination and subsequent fish consumption advisories in southwest Arkansas have increased public awareness of the potential for bioaccumulation of different toxic compounds. It is postulated that the mercury problem in Arkansas is a result of methylation and resulting bioaccumulation of mercury as methyl mercury. This study was designed to derive a Bioaccumulation Factor (BAF) for mercury in a simple food chain under controlled conditions. A BAF is calculated by dividing the concentration found in the organism by …

Elimination Of All-Optical Cycles In Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Jason Iness, Byrav Ramamurthy, Biswanath Mukherjee, Krishna Bala Jun 1996

Elimination Of All-Optical Cycles In Wavelength-Routed Optical Networks, Jason Iness, Byrav Ramamurthy, Biswanath Mukherjee, Krishna Bala

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

A transparent (wide-area) wavelength-routed optical network may be constructed by using wavelength cross-connect switches connected together by fiber to form an arbitrary mesh structure. The network is accessed through electronic stations that are attached to some of these cross-connects. These wavelength cross-connect switches have the property that they may configure themselves into unspecified states. Each input port of a switch is always connected to some output port of the switch whether or not such a connection is required for the purpose of information transfer. Due to the presence of these unspecified states, there exists the possibility of setting up unintended …

Extension Wetlands Education In Texas, Darrin Bauer, Will E. Cohen Jun 1996

Extension Wetlands Education In Texas, Darrin Bauer, Will E. Cohen

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 8th (1996)

The United States has lost more than half of the wetlands that existed prior to European settlement. Wetlands continue to be lost at an alarming rate due to human disturbance and natural processes. The loss of our countries' wetlands is costing our society greatly. Wetlands perform many functions that are beneficial, such as water filtration, recharging groundwater, providing natural flood control, and supporting a wide variety of birds, fish, mammals, amphibians, insects, and plants. Numerous commercially important fish also require wetlands to survive. Wetlands also provide many recreational opportunities.
