Experimental And Observational Geometry, Albert D. Field Jan 1928

Experimental And Observational Geometry, Albert D. Field

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Geometry has the distinction of being one of the oldest subjects given in the high-school.

Its subject-matter was formulated and organized by the Greeks into a fine system of thought before the time of Christ. Since leaving the hands of the Greeks, geometry has received only a few minor changes, and these largely in recent years.

Heretofore, the study of geometry has been made almost entirely dependent upon memory and reasoning. Geometricians have been slow in adopting the laboratory and observational methods.

This thesis has been written to encourage the student in his work of observing geometrical forms, and in …

Test 153: John Deere Gp 10-20, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

EXPLANATION OF TEST REPORT: John Deere GP 10-20

TEST A: The manufacturer's representative operates the tractor for a minimum of 12 hours using light to heavy drawbar loads in each gear.

This serves as a period for limber up, general observation and adjustments. Adjustments that are permissible include valve tappet clearance, breaker ,point gap, spark plug gaps, clutch and others of a similar nature. No new parts or accessories can be installed without having mention made of it in the report. No data' are recorded during this preliminary run except the time that the engine is operated.

BELT HORSEPOWER TESTS …

Test 154: Advance-Rumely "Do All", Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

Heavy Minerals In The Roubidoux And Other Sandstones Of The Ozark Region (Mo.), Cletus Daniel Cordry Jan 1928

Heavy Minerals In The Roubidoux And Other Sandstones Of The Ozark Region (Mo.), Cletus Daniel Cordry

Masters Theses

"In this study an attempt has been made to determine the usefulness of heavy minerals for correlation of formations over a limited area, in the heart of the Ozark uplift in southeast Missouri. The Roubidoux formation, already definitely correlated by other means, has been rather systematically sampled throughout the area, and the heavy minerals determined to ascertain their dependability for correlation purposes. Several samples from other horizons have been studied for comparison with the Roubidoux. Also, within the area studied there are numerous isolated patches of sandstone, the horizons of which have not been definitely determined. Samples from a few …

A Method Of Measuring The Velocity Of Gravitation, Percy Martin Roope Jun 1927

A Method Of Measuring The Velocity Of Gravitation, Percy Martin Roope

Historical Dissertations & Theses

For many years the velocity of gravitation, or more properly, the velocity of propagation of gravitational potential, has been the subject of much theoretical discussion. The magnitude of this velocity according to proposed theories varies from the velocity of light to infinity. According to the theory of relativity, the velocity of gravitation should be equal to that of light, and the success which experimental tests of the theory have met justify this assumption. No previous work has been done, however, which would form the basis of a direct measurement. During the past three years, experiments relating to the velocity of …

A Study Of The Ph Of Sodium Citrate In Relation To Blood Transfusion, Roman Edward Galasinski Jun 1927

A Study Of The Ph Of Sodium Citrate In Relation To Blood Transfusion, Roman Edward Galasinski

Bachelors’ Theses

Blood transfusion, within recent years, has become a subject of paramount therapeutic importance. A few years back the technique of blood transfusion was so difficult that there were only a relatively few who possessed the requisite skill to perform the operation and then not always successfully. But since the year 1907 the evolution and perfection of blood transfusion procedures has been so steady and immense that, as a therapeutic measure, it has come into general use in the treatment of various acute and chronic lesions.

Irrational Numbers, Paul O. Smith Jun 1927

Irrational Numbers, Paul O. Smith

Bachelors’ Theses

By an irrational number is meant a number which cannot be expressed by an Integer or by a fraction. The definition in itself is rather vague and to many would not mean very much but by a definite geometric example the idea of just what an irrational number is can be much more clearly shown. Suppose we are given a line of a definite length of two inches. It can easily be seen how this line can be divided into a great number of smaller parts which can be expressed by integers and fractions.

History And Proof Of The Binomial Theorem, Ethel B. Ray Jun 1927

History And Proof Of The Binomial Theorem, Ethel B. Ray

Bachelors’ Theses

Everyone realizes what a wonderful place the world really is. Yet, we of this day little think of the many generations that have gone to make our universe as it is. We think we have done wonders. We pride ourselves on our modern way. There is a tendency in man to "pat himself on the back" and boast of how well he has done. Little do we realize that millions and millions of people have given their whole lives so that we might be as we are. Of course the soldier gives his life for his country; but what of …

Methods Of Tracing Curves, Stephen Lewandowski Jun 1927

Methods Of Tracing Curves, Stephen Lewandowski

Bachelors’ Theses

There are two kinds of equations, algebraic equations and transcendental equations. An algebraic equation is one that involves a finite number of ordinary operations of algebra i.e. addition, multiplication, subtraction, division, extraction of roots, and raising to powers denoted by constant exponents.

Hyperbolic Functions, Margaret S. Johnston Jun 1927

Hyperbolic Functions, Margaret S. Johnston

Bachelors’ Theses

A Study of hyperbolic functions is both interesting and fruitful because of their important and historical relation to the more elementary branches of Mathematics: Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry and Differential and Integral Calculus. Historically the development of hyperbolic functions has been closely associated with the development of the properties of the circle, ellipse, and hyperbola; the earliest knowledge of the functions rising out of a comparative study of these curves, and resting on more analogy rather than clear definition and proof.

The Effect Of Aldehydes On The Solutions Of Iron Wire In Hydrochloric Acid, Mary Margaret Bannen Jun 1927

The Effect Of Aldehydes On The Solutions Of Iron Wire In Hydrochloric Acid, Mary Margaret Bannen

Bachelors’ Theses

The destruction of iron by corrosion, under the influence of natural agencies, is far more rapid than the decay of wood and other materials of construction. Were it not for iron, the erection of large works of engineering would be impossible. Their very size and consequent cost represent a large sum of human energy. This is, after all, the only true foundation for wealth and it becomes a duty to preserve iron from decay.

The Picric Acid Method Of Sugar Determinations As Applied To Solutions Containing Maltose And Lactose, John J. Hennecke

Bachelors’ Theses

Lewis and Benedict based their method of sugar determination upon the reaction which takes place when a glucose solution is heated with a few C.C. of picric acid to which a small amount of alkali has been added.
