Urea Adducts Of The Esters Of Stearic Acid, Paul Elliott Greene Jan 1952

Urea Adducts Of The Esters Of Stearic Acid, Paul Elliott Greene

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Urea forms crystalline complexes with n-alkanes and their liner derivatives but not with most branched and cyclic hydrocarbons and their derivatives. The compounds are stable enough to be used in separating these types of aliphatic compounds from their branched and cyclic analogs. Linear esters derived from normal saturated acids give adducts as expected. Urea complexation was found to be of great importance in the purification and separation of unsaturated esters of high molecular weight.

The object of the present research was to investigate the compositions of urea adducts of various long-chain esters, approaching the class of waxes, to test various …

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller Jan 1952

A Report On Drosophila Collections In Nebraska, David D. Williams, Dwight D. Miller

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Until rather recently little has been known of the Drosophila species of Nebraska. Sturtevant (1921) lists Nebraska as one of seven states from which no Drosophila had been reported. Patterson and Wagner (1943) show that collections of Drosophila pseudoobscura had been made in the vicinities of Scottsbluff and Kearney, but no other Drosophila species are reported from Nebraska in their publication.

On The Ideal Structure Of The Ring Of Entire Functions, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1952

On The Ideal Structure Of The Ring Of Entire Functions, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Let R be the ring of entire functions, and let K be the complex field. The ring R consists of all functions from K to K differentiable everywhere (in the usual sense).

The algebraic structure of the ring of entire functions seems to have been investigated extensively first by O. Helmer [1].

The ideals of R are herein classified as in [2]: an ideal I is called fixed if every function in it vanishes at at least one common point; otherwise, I is called free. The structure of the fixed ideals was determined in [1]. The structure of the …

Sunrise And Sunset Times For March-April 1952 Jan 1952

Sunrise And Sunset Times For March-April 1952

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Times of sunrise and sunset for every fifth day, are given for a number of towns throughout the State. Times for a town not on the list may be estimated if its position in relation to one or more of the listed towns is known. The times given for sunrise are those of the first appearance of the top edge of the sun over a true horizon; those for sunset give the time of the sun's disappearance below a true horizon. Situation in a valley would make the sun appear to rise later, and on a hill it would appear …

Kimberley Soils Need Phosphates, W. M. Nunn Jan 1952

Kimberley Soils Need Phosphates, W. M. Nunn

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Research work carried out at the Kimberley Research Station on the Ord River, and on experimental plots throughout the East and West Kimberleys, indicates that the soils of the Kimberleys are quite as deficient in phosphorus as are the soils of our agricultural areas where superphosphate is essential to the growth of most crops.

This may come as a surprise to many people, for there has been a widespread tendency to assume that the Kimberleys soils, especially those of the Ord and Fitzroy valleys, are highly fertile.

The black earths of Queensland's Darling Downs produce most enviable yields of sorghum …

Soil Conservation In Western Australia, G. H. Burvill Jan 1952

Soil Conservation In Western Australia, G. H. Burvill

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 3

Soil is a farmer's basic asset. This issue of "The Journal of Agriculture" in a new form designed to provide still better service to the farming community, is an appropriate medium through which to remind the man on the land of what the soil means to him—and to the State. The farmer's duties to himself, his family and the State are summed up in the words "soil conservation" which is merely another way of saying "wise land use."

The Spieker Circle And Certain Related Configurations, Berthola Elmo Lumzy Jan 1952

The Spieker Circle And Certain Related Configurations, Berthola Elmo Lumzy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, presented to the Department of Mathematics at Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in 1952, examines the Spieker circle, a circle inscribed in the median triangle of a given triangle, and extends its defining properties to related geometric configurations. Lumzy first establishes a series of analogies between the Spieker circle and the nine-point circle, demonstrating parallel relationships involving radius, center, harmonic conjugates, and homothetic centers relative to the incenter, median point, and Nagel point of a triangle.

The thesis then proves that the Spieker circle is inscribed in two congruent …

Waterfowl Breeding Ground Survey, 1952 In Nebraska, Harvey W. Miller Jan 1952

Waterfowl Breeding Ground Survey, 1952 In Nebraska, Harvey W. Miller

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

The Nebraska Breeding Ground Survey has been conducted for the fifth consecutive year. This survey is aimed at providing indicators to the waterfowl population through measuring the seasonal and year b,y year trends in breeding numbers and production success. The survey recognizes the sandhill region as the most important waterfowl-producing area of Nebraska and therefore, studies have been largely concentrated there.

Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke Jan 1952

Audio Census Of Some Wisconsin Game Birds, Donald R. Thompson, Charles W. Lemke

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Audio censuses of Wisconsin game birds were commenced in 1948, and now include the bobwhite quail, the pheasant and the ruffed grouse, in the order in which censuses were introduced.

Briefly, audio censuses are based on the characteristic sounds given by the male of the species concerned during the breeding season. An observer strategically located at a station, or stations in the field tallies the number of individuals calling, and/or the number of calls heard during a given time period.

In Wisconsin, only the transect method is used, with the observer following a given route and making listening stops of …

Separation Of The Alkaline Earth Group By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Robert J. Martinovich Jan 1952

Separation Of The Alkaline Earth Group By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Robert J. Martinovich

Bachelors’ Theses

Since chromatography is beginning more and more to find its place in industry as an analytical tool, the author became interested in its theoretical and practical applications. This thesis was one phase of a project begun by Dr. John G. Surak, to introduce this type of analysis to the freshmen chemistry classes as a supplementary procedure to their regular methods.

A Statistical Comparison Of The Standard And The Modified Karl Fischer Reagents For Moisture Determination In Certain Compounds, Lowell E. Williams Jan 1952

A Statistical Comparison Of The Standard And The Modified Karl Fischer Reagents For Moisture Determination In Certain Compounds, Lowell E. Williams

Bachelors’ Theses

The Karl Fischer reagent may be used for the direct titration of water in liquids, solids, and gases, of either organic or inorganic compounds. Literature shows that the accurate determination of water is quite practical in nearly all classes of organic compounds. Unlike most of the other techniques, which usually are limited in applicability, the Fischer procedure may be adapted readily to quantitative analysis of samples, whose water content may vary from traces to nearly 100 per cent. The reagent, however, has a shortcoming, namely, it deteriorates rapidly. It has recently been suggested that if a two solution procedure were …

Separation Of The Ions Of Groups Iiia And Iiib By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Norman Leffler Jan 1952

Separation Of The Ions Of Groups Iiia And Iiib By Means Of Paper Chromatography, Norman Leffler

Bachelors’ Theses

Since chromatography, In view of its ever increasing importance, may some day largely replace the more traditional methods of qualitative analysis, this research has been aimed not only toward the establishment of a scheme of separation for the ions of group III, but also toward presenting and applying the theoretical principles and basic techniques of this comparatively young branch of analytical science.

The Determination Of Moisture In Active Dry Yeast, Richard F. Fenske Jan 1952

The Determination Of Moisture In Active Dry Yeast, Richard F. Fenske

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer, having been employed for the past three years, in the control laboratory of one of this country's largest yeast concerns, is very much interested in the determination of moisture in active dry yeast and has there tore made the investigation presented in this paper.

The moisture content is, of critical importance in the production of active dry yeast. A yeast whose moisture content is too low will have poor baking characteristics while a yeast whose moisture content is too high will have poor keeping quality. Inconsistent results have been obtained by using various methods to determine the moisture …
