Disjunctive Answer Set Programming Via Satisfiability, Yuliya Lierler Jan 2005

Disjunctive Answer Set Programming Via Satisfiability, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Using SAT solvers as inference engines in answer set programming systems showed to be a promising approach in building efficient systems. Nowadays SAT based answer set programming systems successfully work with nondisjunctive programs. This paper proposes a way to use SAT solvers for finding answer sets for disjunctive logic programs. We implement two different ways of SAT solver invocation used in nondisjunctive answer set programming. The algorithms are based on the definition of completion for disjunctive programs and the extension of loop formula to the disjunctive case. We propose the necessary modifications to the algorithms known for nondisjunctive programs in …

A Content-Based Fuzzy Image Database Based On The Fuzzy Artmap Architecture, M. Uysal, Fatoş Tünay Yarman Vural Jan 2005

A Content-Based Fuzzy Image Database Based On The Fuzzy Artmap Architecture, M. Uysal, Fatoş Tünay Yarman Vural

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A major design issue in content-based image retrieval system is the selection of the feature set. This study attacks the problem of finding a discriminative feature for each class, which is optimal in some sense. Fuzzy ARTMAP architecture is used to find this discriminative feature set. For this purpose, initially, a large variety of features are extracted from the regions of the pre-segmented images. Then, the feature set of each object class is learned using the Fuzzy Art Map Architecture, by identifying the weights of each feature for each object class. In the querying phase, trained set of feature weights …

Color Image Profiling Using Fuzzy Sets, Amine Ait Younes, Isis Truck, Herman Akdag Jan 2005

Color Image Profiling Using Fuzzy Sets, Amine Ait Younes, Isis Truck, Herman Akdag

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this article, a software for image indexing and retrieval is presented. The classification proposed here is based on the dominant color(s) of the images. The process consists in assigning a colorimetric profile to the image in HLS space (Hue, Lightness, Saturation). First, the definition of hue is done thanks to a fuzzy representation to take into account the non-uniformity of colors distribution. And then, lightness and saturation are represented through linguistic qualifiers also defined in a fuzzy way. Finally, the profile is built through fuzzy functions representing the membership degree of the image to different classes. In order to …

Towards More Comprehensive Information Retrieval Systems: Entity Extraction Using Xslt, Chris A. Mcmanigal Jan 2005

Towards More Comprehensive Information Retrieval Systems: Entity Extraction Using Xslt, Chris A. Mcmanigal

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One problem that exists in today's document management arena is the issue of retrieving information from electronic documents such as images, Microsoft Office documents, and e-mail. Specific data entities must be extracted from these documents so that the data can be searched and queried. This study presents a unique approach to extracting these entities: using Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) to match patterns in text. Because XSLT is processed at run time, new XSLT templates can be created and used without having to recompile and redeploy the application. The specific implementation addressed in this project extracts entities from an image …

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Analysis Of Women With Hiv/Aids, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2005

Fuzzy And Neutrosophic Analysis Of Women With Hiv/Aids, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Fuzzy theory is one of the best tools to analyze data, when the data under study is an unsupervised one, involving uncertainty coupled with imprecision. However, fuzzy theory cannot cater to analyzing the data involved with indeterminacy. The only tool that can involve itself with indeterminacy is the neutrosophic model. Neutrosophic models are used in the analysis of the socio-economic problems of HIV/AIDS infected women patients living in rural Tamil Nadu. Most of these women are uneducated and live in utter poverty. Till they became seriously ill they worked as daily wagers. When these women got admitted in the hospital …

Compressed Pattern Matching For Text And Images, Tao Tao Jan 2005

Compressed Pattern Matching For Text And Images, Tao Tao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The amount of information that we are dealing with today is being generated at an ever-increasing rate. On one hand, data compression is needed to efficiently store, organize the data and transport the data over the limited-bandwidth network. On the other hand, efficient information retrieval is needed to speedily find the relevant information from this huge mass of data using available resources. The compressed pattern matching problem can be stated as: given the compressed format of a text or an image and a pattern string or a pattern image, report the occurrence(s) of the pattern in the text or image …

Cmodels For Tight Disjunctive Logic Programs, Yuliya Lierler Jan 2005

Cmodels For Tight Disjunctive Logic Programs, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Disjunctive logic programming under the stable model semantics [GL91] is a new answer set programming (ASP) methodology for solving combinatorial search problems. It is a form of declarative programming related to logic programming languages, such as Prolog, where the solutions to a problem are represented by answer sets, and not by answer substitutions produced in response to a query as in convential logic programming. Instead of Prolog systems, this programming method uses answer set solvers, such as smodels1, smodelscc2, cmodels3, dlv4, and gnt1. These systems made it possible for ASP to be successfully applied in such areas as planning, bounded …

Human Mental Models Of Humanoid Robots, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Sara Kiesler, Chi-Yue Chiu Jan 2005

Human Mental Models Of Humanoid Robots, Sau-Lai Lee, Ivy Yee-Man Lau, Sara Kiesler, Chi-Yue Chiu

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Effective communication between a person and a robot may depend on whether there exists a common ground of understanding between the two. In two experiments modelled after human-human studies we examined how people form a mental model of a robot's factual knowledge. Participants estimated the robot's knowledge by extrapolating from their own knowledge and from information about the robot's origin and language. These results suggest that designers of humanoid robots must attend not only to the social cues that robots emit but also to the information people use to create mental models of a robot.

Similarity-Aware Web Content Management And Document Pre-Fetching, Jitian Xiao, Michael Collins Jan 2005

Similarity-Aware Web Content Management And Document Pre-Fetching, Jitian Xiao, Michael Collins

Research outputs pre 2011

Web caching is intended to reduce network traffic, server load and user-perceived retrieval latency. Web pre-fetching, which can be considered as "active" caching, builds on regular Web caching, minimizing further a Web user's access delay. To be effective, however, the pre-fetching techniques must be able to predict subsequent Web access with minimum computational overheads. This paper presents a similarity-based mechanism to support similarity-aware Web document pre-fetching between proxy caches and browsing clients. We first define a set of measures to assess similarities between Web documents, and then propose a multi-cache architecture to cache Web documents based on those similarities. A …

Interval Neutrosophic Sets And Logic; Theory And Applications In Computing, Haibin Wang, Florentin Smarandache, Yan-Qing Zhang, Rajshekhar Sunderraman

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

This book presents the advancements and applications of neutrosophics. Chapter 1 first introduces the interval neutrosophic sets which is an instance of neutrosophic sets. In this chapter, the definition of interval neutrosophic sets and set-theoretic operators are given and various properties of interval neutrosophic set are proved. Chapter 2 defines the interval neutrosophic logic based on interval neutrosophic sets including the syntax and semantics of first order interval neutrosophic propositional logic and first order interval neutrosophic predicate logic. The interval neutrosophic logic can reason and model fuzzy, incomplete and inconsistent information. In this chapter, we also design an interval neutrosophic …

The Effects Of Computerized Smell Of Memory, Brandon Spencer Jan 2005

The Effects Of Computerized Smell Of Memory, Brandon Spencer

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

It has long been recognized that there is a major correlation between smell and memory. Until recently, commercialized multi-sensory experiences involving olfaction were limited to non-computerized mediums. Companies that manufacture computerized scent technologies tout the educational benefits of their product, yet prior to this study, there appeared to be no scholarly research in regard to the efficacy of computerized scent producing peripherals in educational environments. The aim of this research was to determine the odor memory enhancement benefits of incorporating olfactory, computerized peripherals into computerized multimedia-learning environments, from both a context dependent and context independent stand point. Specifically, within a …

The Asymptotic Optimal Partition And Extensions Of The Nonsubstitution Theorem, Julio R. Hasfura-Buenaga, Allen G. Holder, Jeffrey Stuart Jan 2005

The Asymptotic Optimal Partition And Extensions Of The Nonsubstitution Theorem, Julio R. Hasfura-Buenaga, Allen G. Holder, Jeffrey Stuart

Mathematics Faculty Research

The data describing an asymptotic linear program rely on a single parameter, usually referred to as time, and unlike parametric linear programming, asymptotic linear programming is concerned with the steady state behavior as time increases to infinity. The fundamental result of this work shows that the optimal partition for an asymptotic linear program attains a steady state for a large class of functions. Consequently, this allows us to define an asymptotic center solution. We show that this solution inherits the analytic properties of the functions used to describe the feasible region. Moreover, our results allow significant extensions of an economics …

Implementation Of A New Self-Tuning Fuzzy Pid Controller On Plc, Onur Karasakal, Engi̇n Yeşi̇l, Müjde Güzelkaya, İbrahi̇m Eksi̇n

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this study, the self-tuning method for fuzzy PID controllers that has been developed in a previous study of the authors is implemented on PLC in order to control some standard processes formed on FEEDBACK PCS 327 Process Control Simulator. In this tuning method, the input scaling factor corresponding to the derivative coefficient and the output scaling factor corresponding to the integral coefficient of the fuzzy PID controller are adjusted using a fuzzy inference mechanism with a new input called ``normalized acceleration''. The results of the implementation have been compared with those of the classical fuzzy PID controller without a …

Generating Estimates Of Classification Confidence For A Case-Based Spam Filter, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Donal Coyle, Anton Zamolotskikh Jan 2005

Generating Estimates Of Classification Confidence For A Case-Based Spam Filter, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Donal Coyle, Anton Zamolotskikh

Conference papers

Producing estimates of classification confidence is surprisingly difficult. One might expect that classifiers that can produce numeric classification scores (e.g. k-Nearest Neighbour, Na¨ıve Bayes or Support Vector Machines) could readily produce confidence estimates based on thresholds. In fact, this proves not to be the case, probably because these are not probabilistic classifiers in the strict sense. The numeric scores coming from k-Nearest Neighbour, Na¨ıve Bayes and Support Vector Machine classifiers are not well correlated with classification confidence. In this paper we describe a case-based spam filtering application that would benefit significantly from an ability to attach confidence predictions to positive …

A Context-Dependent Model Of Proximity In Physically Situated Environments, John D. Kelleher, Geert-Jan M. Kruijff Jan 2005

A Context-Dependent Model Of Proximity In Physically Situated Environments, John D. Kelleher, Geert-Jan M. Kruijff

Conference papers

The paper presents a computational model for a context-dependent analysis of a physical environment in terms of spatial proximity. The model provides a basis for grounding linguistic analyses of spatial expressions in visual perception. The model uses potential fields to model spatial proximity. It has been implemented, and when combined with a handcrafted grammar, is used to enable a conversational robot to carry out a situated dialogue with a human. The key concept in our approach is defining the region that is proximal to a landmark based on the spatial configuration of other objects in the scene. The model extends …

Future Reasoning Machines: Mind And Body, Brian Duffy, Gregory O'Hare, John Bradley, Bianca Schoen-Phelan Jan 2005

Future Reasoning Machines: Mind And Body, Brian Duffy, Gregory O'Hare, John Bradley, Bianca Schoen-Phelan

Articles

In investing energy in developing reasoning machines of the future, one must abstract away from the specific solutions to specific problems and ask what are the fundamental research questions that should be addressed. This paper aims to revisit some fundamental perspectives and promote new approaches to reasoning machines and their associated form and function. Core aspects are discussed, namely the one-mind-many-bodies metaphor as introduced in the Agent Chameleon work. Within this metaphor the agent’s embodiment form may take many guises with the artificial mind or agent potentially exhibiting a nomadic existence opportunistically migrating between a myriad of instantiated embodiments. We …

An Assessment Of Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Lorcan Coyle Jan 2005

An Assessment Of Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Lorcan Coyle

Articles

Because of the changing nature of spam, a spam filtering system that uses machine learning will need to be dynamic. This suggests that a case-based (memory-based) approach may work well. Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) is a lazy approach to machine learning where induction is delayed to run time. This means that the case base can be updated continuously and new training data is immediately available to the induction process. In this paper we present a detailed description of such a system called ECUE and evaluate design decisions concerning the case representation. We compare its performance with an alternative system that uses …

Automatic Model Structuring From Text Using Biomedical Ontology, Joshi R., Li X., Ramachandaran S., Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bayesian Networks and Influence Diagrams are effective methods for structuring clinical problems. Constructing a relevant structure without the numerical probabilities in itself is a challenging task. In addition, due to the rapid rate of innovations and new findings in the biomedical domain, constructing a relevant graphical model becomes even more challenging. Building a model structure from text with minimum intervention from domain experts and minimum training examples has always been a challenge for the researchers. In the biomedical domain, numerous advances have been made which may make this dream a possibility now. We are currently trying to build a general …

Justilm: Few-Shot Justification Generation For Explainable Fact-Checking Of Real-World Claims, Fengzhu Zeng, Wei Gao Dec 2004

Justilm: Few-Shot Justification Generation For Explainable Fact-Checking Of Real-World Claims, Fengzhu Zeng, Wei Gao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Justification is an explanation that supports the verdict assigned to a claim in fact-checking. However, the task of justification generation is previously oversimplified as summarization of fact-check article authored by professional checkers. In this work, we propose a realistic approach to generate justification based on retrieved evidence. We present a new benchmark dataset called ExClaim for Explainable Claim verification, and introduce JustiLM, a novel few-shot retrieval-augmented language model to learn justification generation by leveraging fact-check articles as auxiliary resource during training. Our results show that JustiLM outperforms in-context learning (ICL)-enabled LMs including Flan-T5 and Llama2, and the retrieval-augmented model Atlas …

Target-Dominant Chinese-English Machine Translation, Dan Su Nov 2004

Target-Dominant Chinese-English Machine Translation, Dan Su

Theses and Dissertations

Information exchange is increasing rapidly with the advent of globalization. As the language spoken by the most people in today's world, Chinese will play an important role in information exchange in the future. Therefore, we need an efficient and practical means to access the increasingly large volume of Chinese data. This thesis describes a target-dominant Chinese-English machine translation system, which can translate a given Chinese news sentence into English. We conjecture that we can improve the state of the art of MT using a TDMT approach. This system has participated in the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) 2004 …

Perceptual Evaluation Of Point-Based Object Representation, Paul Schwarz Nov 2004

Perceptual Evaluation Of Point-Based Object Representation, Paul Schwarz

Computer Science Honors Theses

Researchers have proposed several methods of representing three-dimensional objects in computer memory along with different methods of displaying these objects on two-dimensional computer displays. Using a polygon-based representation that linearly interpolates between a set of sample points is by far the most popular way of representing objects today, mostly because of its ability to display an object on a computer screen at a fast and consistent rate. However, as graphics hardware increases in speed, polygon-based models prove to be increasingly inefficient. Point-based representations have been proposed that consist of densely sampling some surface and using solely the samples to portray …

Parsing Concurrent Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar, Kazuyo Kaneko Nov 2004

Parsing Concurrent Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar, Kazuyo Kaneko

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Concurrent markup hierarchies appear often in document-centric XML documents, as a result of different XML elements having overlapping scopes. They require significantly different approach to management and maintenance. Management of XML documents composed of concurrent markup has been mostly studied by the document processing community and has attracted attention of computer scientists only recently. In this paper we discuss the architecture of an XML parser for concurrent XML. This parser uses a GODDAG data structure in place of traditional DOM Tree to store concurrent markup on top of the document content and provides a DOM-like API that allows software developers …

Art And Democracy In Environmental Decision Making, Audrey Stewart Oct 2004

Art And Democracy In Environmental Decision Making, Audrey Stewart

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Global doctrines on sustainable development emphasize public participation as a tenet of environmentally responsible development. Given the Czech government’s tepid stance towards implementing sustainability measures, much impetus for realizing them will have to come from other facets of Czech society, including the public. In spite of the nearly populist feel of a mounting environmental movement in the late 1980s, after the Velvet Revolution the Czech public remained relatively disengaged from environmental involvement. Traditional decision-making venues within the Czech Republic now actively exclude the public from participating, while other pressures stemming from history and present also diminish the public impetus for …

Due to the complexity of biological systems, interpretation of data obtained by a single experimental approach can often be interpreted only if viewed from a broader context, taking into account the information obtained by many diverse techniques. The vast amount of interpreted experimental data that is now available via the internet opens the possibility of collecting the relevant pieces of information that will enable scientists to form hypotheses based on the integration of this diverse information. However, the sheer volume of data that is available makes it very difficult to select the information necessary to make a coherent model of …
