A P2p Integration Architecture For Protein Resources, K. T. Claypool, Sanjay Kumar Madria Oct 2006

A P2p Integration Architecture For Protein Resources, K. T. Claypool, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The availability of a direct pathway from a primary sequence (denovo or DNA derived) to macromolecular structure to biological function using computer-based tools is the ultimate goal for a protein scientist. Today's state of the art protein resources and on-going research and experiments provide the raw data that can enable protein scientists to achieve at least some steps of this goal. Thus, protein scientists are looking towards taking their benchtop research from the specific to a much broader base of using the large resources of available electronic information. However, currently the burden falls on the scientist to manually interface with …

Something Fishy: Cultivating Children’S Sense Of Place Through Literature, Anne Rone Oct 2006

Something Fishy: Cultivating Children’S Sense Of Place Through Literature, Anne Rone

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Environmental Education (EE) has become increasingly important in Australian public and governmental discourse in the past decade. In its most recent national environmental education statement (2005: 7) the Department of Environment and Heritage lays out a new model of sustainability education that is “about,” “in,” and “for” the environment. This governmental framework includes variety of programs for school children in and out of the classroom. Within the realm of EE, sense of place has re-emerged as an important issue. The study of place fosters a sense of wonder and appreciation for the environment in children and leads to concrete, transformative …

Membrane Systems With Limited Parallelism, Bianca Daniela Popa Oct 2006

Membrane Systems With Limited Parallelism, Bianca Daniela Popa

Doctoral Dissertations

Membrane computing is an emerging research field that belongs to the more general area of molecular computing, which deals with computational models inspired from bio-molecular processes. Membrane computing aims at defining models, called membrane systems or P systems, which abstract the functioning and structure of the cell. A membrane system consists of a hierarchical arrangement of membranes delimiting regions, which represent various compartments of a cell, and with each region containing bio-chemical elements of various types and having associated evolution rules, which represent bio-chemical processes taking place inside the cell.

This work is a continuation of the investigations aiming to …

Discovering Image-Text Associations For Cross-Media Web Information Fusion, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan Sep 2006

Discovering Image-Text Associations For Cross-Media Web Information Fusion, Tao Jiang, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The diverse and distributed nature of the information published on the World Wide Web has made it difficult to collate and track information related to specific topics. Whereas most existing work on web information fusion has focused on multiple document summarization, this paper presents a novel approach for discovering associations between images and text segments, which subsequently can be used to support cross-media web content summarization. Specifically, we employ a similarity-based multilingual retrieval model and adopt a vague transformation technique for measuring the information similarity between visual features and textual features. The experimental results on a terrorist domain document set …

Numbers And Polynomials- 50 Years Since The Publication Of Wittgenstein's Bemerkungen Über Die Grundlagen Der Mathematik (1956): Mathematical And Educational Reflections, Giorgio T. Bagni

The Mathematics Enthusiast

According to L. Wittgenstein, the meaning of a mathematical object is to be grounded upon its use. In this paper we consider Robinson theory Q, the subtheory of firstorder Peano Arithmetic PA; some theorems and conjectures can be interpreted over one model of Q given by a universe of polynomials; with respect to nonconstant polynomials some proofs by elementary methods are given and compared with corresponding results in the standard model of PA. We conclude that the creative power of the language can be pointed out in how the language itself is embedded into the rest of human activities, and …

Ontology-Based Free-Form Query Processing For The Semantic Web, Mark S. Vickers Jun 2006

Ontology-Based Free-Form Query Processing For The Semantic Web, Mark S. Vickers

Theses and Dissertations

With the onset of the semantic web, the problem of making semantic content effectively searchable for the general public emerges. Demanding an understanding of ontologies or familiarity with a new query language would likely frustrate semantic web users and prevent widespread success. Given this need, this thesis describes AskOntos, which is a system that uses extraction ontologies to convert conjunctive, free-form queries into structured queries for semantically annotated web pages. AskOntos then executes these structured queries and provides answers as tables of extracted values. In experiments conducted AskOntos was able to translate queries with a precision of 88% and a …

Multihierarchical Xquery For Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2006

Multihierarchical Xquery For Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Text has a non-hierarchical structure. Not surprisingly, searching for information in the content of a document often yields results that overlap the structure within the document. It is often of a great interest to relate such results to the embedded document structure. In this work we present an extension of the XQuery language over multihierarchical document-centric XML documents. We illustrate the benefits of using multihierarchical XQuery for text-and-structure searches in document-centric XML documents More specifically, multihierarchical XQuery allows representing relationships between textsearch results and document structure even for cases wheresuch search results overlap markup boundaries and even incases when only …

Python First: A Lab-Based Digital Introduction To Computer Science, Atanas Radenski Jun 2006

Python First: A Lab-Based Digital Introduction To Computer Science, Atanas Radenski

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

The emphasis on Java and other commercial languages in CS1 has established the perception of computer science as a dry and technically difficult discipline among undecided students who are still seeking careers. This may not be a big problem during an enrolment boom, but in times of decreased enrolment such negative perception may have a devastating effect on computer science programs and therefore should not be ignored. We have made our CS1 course offerings more attractive to students (1) by introducing an easy to learn yet effective scripting language - Python, (2) by making all course resources available in a …

Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai Jun 2006

Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in text mining and natural language understanding. Current approaches to NER (mostly based on supervised learning) perform well on domains similar to the training domain, but they tend to adapt poorly to slightly different domains. We present several strategies for exploiting the domain structure in the training data to learn a more robust named entity recognizer that can perform well on a new domain. First, we propose a simple yet effective way to automatically rank features based on their generalizabilities across domains. We then train a classifier with strong emphasis on the …

The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On The Bionomics Of Six African Egg Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), A. Kalyebi, W. A. Overholt, F. Schulthess, J. M. Mueke, S. Sithanantham

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The life table statistics of six native Kenyan species/strains of Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea were established using a factitious host Corcyra cephalonica, Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), at eight different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35°C) and two humidity levels (40-50 and 70-80%). The objective was to select insects with superior attributes for augmentative release against lepidopteran pests in horticultural crops. Both temperature and humidity affected developmental time and life table parameters of the parasitoids but temperature played a more critical role. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase increased with temperature …

Structural Auditing Methodologies For Controlled Terminologies, Hua Min May 2006

Structural Auditing Methodologies For Controlled Terminologies, Hua Min

Dissertations

Several auditing methodologies for large controlled terminologies are developed. These are applied to the Unified Medical Language System XXXX and the National Cancer Institute Thesaurus (NCIT). Structural auditing methodologies are based on the structural aspects such as IS-A hierarchy relationships groups of concepts assigned to semantic types and groups of relationships defined for concepts. Structurally uniform groups of concepts tend to be semantically uniform. Structural auditing methodologies focus on concepts with unlikely or rare configuration. These concepts have a high likelihood for errors.

One of the methodologies is based on comparing hierarchical relationships between the META and SN, two major …

Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick May 2006

Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick

Computer Science Honors Theses

Artificial societies and virtual worlds are two areas of interest to modern social scientists that are distinctly separate in modern academic study, and are yet undeniably related. Artificial societies are multi-agent systems comprised of autonomous social agents, programmed with their own set of rules and behavior. While virtual worlds are occupied in large part by human controlled agents participating in a collective virtual experience and space. Within both types of virtual environments there can be found a scarcity of resources and intricate cross-entity interaction. This often results in the development and evolution of complex economic and cultural structures. In addition, …

Mutual Knowledge And Its Impact On Virtual Team Performance, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

This paper describes the notion of mutual knowledge and its potential impact on virtual team performance. Based on a review of the literature, including proponents and opponents for the concept of mutual knowledge in group interaction, we suggest that there is a gap in our understanding of what is known about mutual knowledge as it impacts team dynamics and ultimately virtual team performance. We conclude the paper by discussing the importance of mutual knowledge for virtual team performance and the research issues that need to be addressed in this domain.

A Preliminary Review Of Neotropical Primates In The Subsistence And Symbolism Of Indigenous Lowland South American Peoples, Loretta Cormier

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

This article provides a review of selected literature of nonhuman primates in the subsistence and symbolism of indigenous lowland South American groups. While few works have focused specifically on the relationship between human and nonhuman primates in Amazonia and the surrounding areas, a number of ethnographic works do incorporate information about the roles of monkeys in varied groups. The section on subsistence focuses on the use of primates as food, including preferences, avoidances, and taboos. The section on symbolism focuses on the role of monkeys in myths, folklore, and in delineating the humanity/animality divide.

A Fuzzy Approach For Detecting Anomalous Behaviour In E-Mail Traffic, Mark Jynhuey Lim, Michael Negnevitsky, Jacky Hartnett Apr 2006

A Fuzzy Approach For Detecting Anomalous Behaviour In E-Mail Traffic, Mark Jynhuey Lim, Michael Negnevitsky, Jacky Hartnett

Australian Digital Forensics Conference

This paper investigates the use of fuzzy inference for detection of abnormal changes in email traffic communication behaviour. Several communication behaviour measures and metrics are defined for extracting information on the traffic communication behaviour of email users. The information from these behaviour measures is then combined using a hierarchy of fuzzy inference systems, to provide an abnormality rating for overall changes in communication behaviour of suspect email accounts. The use of fuzzy inference is then demonstrated with a case study investigating the email traffic behaviour of a person’s email accounts from the Enron email corpus.

A Component Based Formal Ontology Model, A Method For Evaluating Such A Model, And The Results Of An Application Of That Method, Charles Tumitsa Apr 2006

A Component Based Formal Ontology Model, A Method For Evaluating Such A Model, And The Results Of An Application Of That Method, Charles Tumitsa

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

For systems to truly communicate effectively, more than just data interchange is necessary. The systems must achieve conceptual interoperability, which implies communicating with understanding.

The LCIM (Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model) describes a number of levels of interoperability, each of which shows systems with an increased amount of conceptual understanding of the other systems they are communicating with. The lowest levels of this model, technical and syntactic interoperability, are achieved (and there are many existing examples) via data exchange in a number of different ways. Research has shown, however, that to attain higher levels of conceptual understanding, that there must …

Surface Realization Using A Featurized Syntactic Statistical Language Model, Thomas L. Packer Mar 2006

Surface Realization Using A Featurized Syntactic Statistical Language Model, Thomas L. Packer

Theses and Dissertations

An important challenge in natural language surface realization is the generation of grammatical sentences from incomplete sentence plans. Realization can be broken into a two-stage process consisting of an over-generating rule-based module followed by a ranker that outputs the most probable candidate sentence based on a statistical language model. Thus far, an n-gram language model has been evaluated in this context. More sophisticated syntactic knowledge is expected to improve such a ranker. In this thesis, a new language model based on featurized functional dependency syntax was developed and evaluated. Generation accuracies and cross-entropy for the new language model did not …

Some New Methodologies For Pattern Recognition Aided By Self-Organizing Maps., Arijit Laha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis we develop several techniques for performing different pattern recognition tasks. In particular, the pattern recognition tasks considered here are classification and vector quantization. We propose several methods for designing classifiers and address various issues involved in the task. For vector quantization, we develop a method for image compression with superior psychovisual reproduction quality. We also propose a method for fast codebook search in a vector quantizer. We exploit different properties of Self-organizing Map (SOM) network for developing these methods. Along with SOM, we also use fuzzy sets theory and Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence to design classi- fiers …
