Treatment Of Displaced Indigenous Populations In Two Large Hydro Projects In Panama, Mary Finley-Brook, Curtis Thomas Jun 2010

Treatment Of Displaced Indigenous Populations In Two Large Hydro Projects In Panama, Mary Finley-Brook, Curtis Thomas

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

The World Commission on Dams provided an analytical overview of the cumulative effects of years of dam development. A lack of commitment or capacity to cope with displacement or to consider the civil rights of, or risks to, displaced people led to the impoverishment and suffering of tens of millions and growing opposition to dams by affected communities worldwide. However, after the WCD, little has changed for the better in terms of resettlement policies. In fact, the standards of key agencies, like the Asian Development Bank, have been lowered and diluted compared to prior policies. Dam-induced development and displacement are …

A Critical Constructionist View Of "At-Risk" Youth In Alternative Education, Rachelle Silverstein Touzard Jun 2010

A Critical Constructionist View Of "At-Risk" Youth In Alternative Education, Rachelle Silverstein Touzard

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Family therapists and school counselors are increasingly called upon to provide services for youth in alternative education (Carver, Lewis, & Tice, 2010). Alternative education systems are programs for youth who have been defined as at risk. This study explored the at-risk discourse and asked the questions (a) how do youth and staff define the term at risk, (b) construct their experience in alternative education systems, and (c) experience their relationships with each other.

Combined elements from critical theory and a social constructionist perspective guided this study. A qualitative, grounded theory method was used that included semi structured interviews with …

Parallel Active Learning: Eliminating Wait Time With Minimal Staleness, Paul Felt, Robbie Haertel, Eric K. Ringger, Kevin Seppi Jun 2010

Parallel Active Learning: Eliminating Wait Time With Minimal Staleness, Paul Felt, Robbie Haertel, Eric K. Ringger, Kevin Seppi

Faculty Publications

A practical concern for Active Learning (AL) is the amount of time human experts must wait for the next instance to label. We propose a method for eliminating this wait time independent of specific learning and scoring algorithms by making scores always available for all instances, using old (stale) scores when necessary. The time during which the expert is annotating is used to train models and score instances–in parallel–to maximize the recency of the scores. Our method can be seen as a parameterless, dynamic batch AL algorithm. We analyze the amount of staleness introduced by various AL schemes and then …

Electronic Discovery: A Fool’S Errand Where Angels Fear To Tread?, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma May 2010

Electronic Discovery: A Fool’S Errand Where Angels Fear To Tread?, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Electronic discovery has transformed the discovery phase of civil litigation in recent years. The expectations of lawyers and parties were initially established in the Rowe and Zubulake cases that led to a complete revision of the electronic discovery rules contained in the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Subsequent cases have underscored the importance of document search methodologies and implications for attorneys, IT professionals, and digital forensics professionals. The authors review how electronic discovery has evolved thus far and offer recommendations regarding the electronic discovery process.

Derivation Of Mass Independent Quantum Treatment Of Phenomenon, David Parker May 2010

Derivation Of Mass Independent Quantum Treatment Of Phenomenon, David Parker

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The derivation and applications is presented of a spatial variable or spatial radius which is related to the inertia or mass-energy of any quantum body by a Lorentz invariant relation. Mass independent DeBroglie and Schroedinger equations are derived and applied to the resolution of the linguistic incompatibility between quantum theory and the geometrical weak equivalence principle. The equivalence principle is restated in terms of the spatial radius. The gravitational attraction between bodies and the relativistic energy are both presented in terms of the spatial radius follows. The ratio of the gravitational force to the Coulomb force at the Planck scale …

Focused Multi-Document Summarization: Human Summarization Activity Vs. Automated Systems Techniques, Quinsulon L. Israel, Hyoil Han, Il-Yeol Song

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Focused Multi-Document Summarization (MDS) is concerned with summarizing documents in a collection with a concentration toward a particular external request (i.e. query, question, topic, etc.), or focus. Although the current state-of-the-art provides somewhat decent performance for DUC/TAC-like evaluations (i.e. government and news concerns), other considerations need to be explored. This paper not only briefly explores the state-of-the-art in automatic systems techniques, but also a comparison with human summarization activity.

Bridging Lightweight And Heavyweight Task Organization: The Role Of Tags In Adopting New Task Categories, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey May 2010

Bridging Lightweight And Heavyweight Task Organization: The Role Of Tags In Adopting New Task Categories, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In collaborative software development projects, tasks are often used as a mechanism to coordinate and track shared development work. Modern development environments provide explicit support for task management where tasks are typically organized and managed through predefined categories. Although there have been many studies that analyze data available from task management systems, there has been relatively little work on the design of task management tools. In this paper we explore how tagging with freely assigned keywords provides developers with a lightweight mechanism to further categorize and annotate development tasks. We investigate how tags that are frequently used over a long …

Compassion-Focused Reappraisal, Benefit-Focused Reappraisal, And Rumination After An Interpersonal Offense: Emotion-Regulation Implications For Subjective Emotion, Linguistic Responses, And Physiology, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Ross W. Knoll, Nova G. Hinman, Paul Deyoung May 2010

Compassion-Focused Reappraisal, Benefit-Focused Reappraisal, And Rumination After An Interpersonal Offense: Emotion-Regulation Implications For Subjective Emotion, Linguistic Responses, And Physiology, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, Ross W. Knoll, Nova G. Hinman, Paul Deyoung

Faculty Publications

This repeated measures psychophysiology experiment studied three responses to a past interpersonal offense (38 females and 33 males). We compared rumination with two offense reappraisal strategies. Compassion-focused reappraisal emphasized the offender's humanity, and interpreted the transgression as evidence of the offender's need for positive transformation. Benefit-focused reappraisal emphasized insights gained or strengths shown in facing the offense. Supporting the manipulations, compassion-focused reappraisal stimulated the most empathy and forgiveness, whereas benefit-focused reappraisal prompted the most benefit language and gratitude. Both reappraisals decreased aroused, negative emotion, and related facial muscle tension at the brow (corrugator). Both reappraisals increased happiness and positive emotion …

The Sitac Approach For Time-Aware Query Translation In Text Archives, Amal Kaluarachchi May 2010

The Sitac Approach For Time-Aware Query Translation In Text Archives, Amal Kaluarachchi

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

With an exponential growth in archival of time-stamped documents such as newswire articles, blog posts and other web-pages, information retrieval (IR) has become a challenging task. The degree of complexity in this IR task increases when these archives cover long time-spans and the terminology in them has undergone significant changes. When users pose queries pertaining to historical information over such document collections, the queries need to be translated, incorporating temporal changes, to provide accurate responses. For example, a query on Sri Lanka should automatically retrieve documents with its former name Ceylon. We call such concepts SITACs i.e., Semantically Identical Temporally …

Creating A Biomedical Ontology Indexed Search Engine To Improve The Semantic Relevance Of Retreived Medical Text, William Taylor Ii May 2010

Creating A Biomedical Ontology Indexed Search Engine To Improve The Semantic Relevance Of Retreived Medical Text, William Taylor Ii

All Dissertations

Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is a controlled vocabulary used by the National Library of Medicine to index medical articles, abstracts, and journals contained within the MEDLINE database. Although MeSH imposes uniformity and consistency in the indexing process, it has been proven that using MeSH indices only result in a small increase in precision over free-text indexing. Moreover, studies have shown that the use of controlled vocabularies in the indexing process is not an effective method to increase semantic relevance in information retrieval.
To address the need for semantic relevance, we present an ontology-based information retrieval system for the MEDLINE collection …

Neutrosophic Physics: More Problems, More Solutions, Florentin Smarandache May 2010

Neutrosophic Physics: More Problems, More Solutions, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

When considering the laws of theoretical physics, one of the physicists says that these laws – the actual expressions of the laws of mathematics and logics being applied to physical phenomena – should be limited according to the physical meaning we attribute to the phenomena. In other word, there is an opinion that a theoretical physicist should put some limitations onto mathematics, in order to “reduce” it to the observed reality. No doubt, we can do it. However, if following this way, we would arrive at only mathematical models of already known physical phenomena. Of course, this might be useful …

Sat-Based Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler May 2010

Sat-Based Answer Set Programming, Yuliya Lierler

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Answer set programming (ASP) is a declarative programming paradigm oriented towards difficult combinatorial search problems. Syntactically, ASP programs look like Prolog programs, but solutions are represented in ASP by sets of atoms, and not by substitutions, as in Prolog. Answer set systems, such as SMODELS, SMODELSCC, and DLV, compute answer sets of a given program in the sense of the answer set (stable model) semantics. This is different from the functionality of Prolog systems, which determine when a given query is true relative to a given logic program. ASP has been applied to many areas of science and technology, from …

A Discriminative Model Approach For Accurate Duplicate Bug Report Retrieval, Chengnian Sun, David Lo, Xiaoyin Wang, Siau-Cheng Khoo May 2010

A Discriminative Model Approach For Accurate Duplicate Bug Report Retrieval, Chengnian Sun, David Lo, Xiaoyin Wang, Siau-Cheng Khoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Bug repositories are usually maintained in software projects. Testers or users submit bug reports to identify various issues with systems. Sometimes two or more bug reports correspond to the same defect. To address the problem with duplicate bug reports, a person called a triager needs to manually label these bug reports as duplicates, and link them to their "master" reports for subsequent maintenance work. However, in practice there are considerable duplicate bug reports sent daily; requesting triagers to manually label these bugs could be highly time consuming. To address this issue, recently, several techniques have be proposed using various similarity …

Exploiting Query Logs For Cross-Lingual Query Suggestions., Wei Gao, Cheng Niu, Jian-Yun Nie, Ming Zhou, Kam-Fai Wong, Hsiao-Wuen Hon

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Query suggestion aims to suggest relevant queries for a given query, which helps users better specify their information needs. Previous work on query suggestion has been limited to the same language. In this article, we extend it to cross-lingual query suggestion (CLQS): for a query in one language, we suggest similar or relevant queries in other languages. This is very important to the scenarios of cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) and other related cross-lingual applications. Instead of relying on existing query translation technologies for CLQS, we present an effective means to map the input query of one language to queries of …

Two-View Transductive Support Vector Machines, Guangxia Li, Steven C. H. Hoi, Kuiyu Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Obtaining high-quality and up-to-date labeled data can be difficult in many real-world machine learning applications, especially for Internet classification tasks like review spam detection, which changes at a very brisk pace. For some problems, there may exist multiple perspectives, so called views, of each data sample. For example, in text classification, the typical view contains a large number of raw content features such as term frequency, while a second view may contain a small but highly-informative number of domain specific features. We thus propose a novel two-view transductive SVM that takes advantage of both the abundant amount of unlabeled data …

Web 2.0 has changed the way we share and keep up with information. We communicate through social media platforms and make the information we exchange to a large extent publicly available. Linked Open Data (LOD) follows the same paradigm of sharing information but also makes it machine accessible. LOD provides an abundance of structured information albeit in a less formally rigorous form than would be desirable for Semantic Web applications. Nevertheless, most of the LOD assertions are community reviewed and we can rely on their accuracy to a large extent. In this work we want to follow the Web 2.0 …

Representing Propositional Logic Connectives With Modular Polynomials, Shawn Davis Apr 2010

Representing Propositional Logic Connectives With Modular Polynomials, Shawn Davis

McNair Scholars Research Journal

This paper explores the relationship between n-valued propositional logic connectives and modular polynomials. Namely the representing of logic connectives using modular polynomials. The case for n = 2 is explored and a method is developed for finding the coefficients of the unique polynomial that represents any given binary logic connective. Examples are then given for using the modular polynomial representations of connectives to determine the validity of propositional arguments. A similar procedure is shown for when n = 3 and an evaluation of the axioms of Łukasiewicz’s 3-valued logic is given using modular polynomials. The general case is explored to …

Database Localization In A Test Environment, Thuy-Uyen Tran

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

One of the most significant challenges facing database software publishers is globalizing their products to tap into potentially profitable overseas business opportunities. The challenges of making products work overseas are many, ranging from budgeting for globalization projects to requiring developers to be skilled in localization. Over the years, software publishers have developed and implemented various tools and processes for globalization and localization. While there is considerable literature available on software development lifecycles and case studies, few studies have focused on globalization of database software. This thesis will examine the extent to which database publishers are using internationalization tools and processes …

BACKGROUND: The UVB component of solar ultraviolet irradiation is one of the major risk factors for the development of skin cancer in humans. UVB exposure elicits an increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are responsible for oxidative damage to proteins, DNA, RNA and lipids. In order to examine the biological impact of UVB irradiation on skin cells, we used a parallel proteomics approach to analyze the protein expression profile and to identify oxidatively modified proteins in normal human epithelial keratinocytes.

RESULTS: The expression levels of fifteen proteins - involved in maintaining the cytoskeleton integrity, removal of damaged proteins …

Measuring Variations Of Mimicry By Means Of Prosodic Cues In Task-Based Scenarios And Conversational Speech, Brian Vaughan, Celine De Looze Mar 2010

Measuring Variations Of Mimicry By Means Of Prosodic Cues In Task-Based Scenarios And Conversational Speech, Brian Vaughan, Celine De Looze

Other resources

Here, we address the measurement of mimicry, that is when speakers’ speech variations look like parallel patterns.

As a definition of mimicry, we often read in the literature description such as mimicry is “The situation where the observed behaviours of two inter-actants although dissimilar at the start of the interaction are moving towards behavioral matching”. These types of descriptions imply that mimicry is a linear phenomenon and that speakers tend to imitate over time. However, it can be assumed, especially when studying spontaneous speech, that there are rather phases of mimicry and non-mimicry and that mimicry should be rather …

A Multi-Objective Approach To A Bipartite Assignment Matching Problem Using Weighted Values From Multiple Contraints, Greg S. Jeong Mar 2010

A Multi-Objective Approach To A Bipartite Assignment Matching Problem Using Weighted Values From Multiple Contraints, Greg S. Jeong

Theses and Dissertations

US Air Force recruiters routinely assign new recruits to available jobs every month. The goal is to find the best assignments in an efficient manner. Although this problem is modeled as a bipartite assignment matching problem, it is not new to the field of Operations Research. This research presents a new approach to solve assignment matching problems given multiple side constraints. Using two multi-criteria optimization techniques, lexicographic optimization and the elastic constraint method, the assignment matching algorithm efficiently produces an optimal solution in a fraction of the time currently spent. This approach is demonstrated in assigning new USAF recruits to …

Software Internationalization: A Framework Validated Against Industry Requirements For Computer Science And Software Engineering Programs, John Huân Vũ Mar 2010

Software Internationalization: A Framework Validated Against Industry Requirements For Computer Science And Software Engineering Programs, John Huân Vũ

Master's Theses

View John Huân Vũ's thesis presentation at http://youtu.be/y3bzNmkTr-c.

In 2001, the ACM and IEEE Computing Curriculum stated that it was necessary to address "the need to develop implementation models that are international in scope and could be practiced in universities around the world." With increasing connectivity through the internet, the move towards a global economy and growing use of technology places software internationalization as a more important concern for developers. However, there has been a "clear shortage in terms of numbers of trained persons applying for entry-level positions" in this area. Eric Brechner, Director of Microsoft Development Training, suggested …

Effects Of Socioeconomic Status On Brain Development, And How Cognitive Neuroscience May Contribute To Levelling The Playing Field, Rajeev Raizada, Mark M. Kishiyama

Dartmouth Scholarship

The study of socioeconomic status (SES) and the brain finds itself in a circumstance unusual for Cognitive Neuroscience: large numbers of questions with both practical and scientific importance exist, but they are currently under-researched and ripe for investigation. This review aims to highlight these questions, to outline their potential significance, and to suggest routes by which they might be approached. Although remarkably few neural studies have been carried out so far, there exists a large literature of previous behavioural work. This behavioural research provides an invaluable guide for future neuroimaging work, but also poses an important challenge for it: how …
