The Finite Embeddability Property For Some Noncommutative Knotted Varieties Of Rl And Drl, Riquelmi Salvador Cardona Fuentes Jan 2015

The Finite Embeddability Property For Some Noncommutative Knotted Varieties Of Rl And Drl, Riquelmi Salvador Cardona Fuentes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Residuated lattices, although originally considered in the realm of algebra providing a general setting for studying ideals in ring theory, were later shown to form algebraic models for substructural logics. The latter are non-classical logics that include intuitionistic, relevance, many-valued, and linear logic, among others. Most of the important examples of substructural logics are obtained by adding structural rules to the basic logical calculus FL. We denote by the varieties of knotted residuated lattices. Examples of these knotted rules include integrality and contraction. The extension of by the rules corresponding to these two equations is …

The ‘New’ Heidegger, Babette Babich Jan 2015

The ‘New’ Heidegger, Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

If discussion of “new” approaches to Martin Heidegger contradicts Heidegger’s own indictment of the passion for “novelty” in philosophy, today’s Black Notebooks scandal reminds us of the ontic problem of new news. Indeed the backwards working evidence of the notebooks kept before, during, and after WWII both vindicates and problematizes his notion of temporality temporalizing from the future -- lapsing into the past -- setting up what is now regarded as patent in the present. Simultaneously, we see that if heretofore many philosophers of technology sought to dismiss engagement with Heidegger’s critique of technology, these critical contributions turn out to …

Tr-2015001: A Survey And Critique Of Facial Expression Synthesis In Sign Language Animation, Hernisa Kacorri Jan 2015

Tr-2015001: A Survey And Critique Of Facial Expression Synthesis In Sign Language Animation, Hernisa Kacorri

Computer Science Technical Reports

Sign language animations can lead to better accessibility of information and services for people who are deaf and have low literacy skills in spoken/written languages. Due to the distinct word-order, syntax, and lexicon of the sign language from the spoken/written language, many deaf people find it difficult to comprehend the text on a computer screen or captions on a television. Animated characters performing sign language in a comprehensible way could make this information accessible. Facial expressions and other non-manual components play an important role in the naturalness and understandability of these animations. Their coordination to the manual signs is crucial …

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero Jan 2015

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero

Open Access Dissertations

The conceptualization of the term "system" has become highly dependent on the application domain. What a physicist means by the term system might be different than what a sociologist means by the same term. In 1956, Bertalanffy [1] defined a system as " a set of units with relationships among them". This and many other definitions of system share the idea of a system as a black box that has parts or elements interacting between each other. This means that at some level of abstraction all systems are similar, what eventually differentiates one system from another is the set of …

Physical Engagement As A Way To Increase Emotional Rapport In Interactions With Embodied Conversational Agents, Ivan Gris Sepulveda

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

One of the major goals in research on embodied conversational agents (ECAs) is to increase the believability and perceived trustworthiness of agents. To improve the efficacy of the interaction between humans and ECAs, I focus on the development of rapport, which is a complex and extensive behavioral state of affinity, synchronicity, coordination and mutual understanding that is difficult to model, measure and interpret. I present our AGENT Framework and our ECA, Adriana, which is capable of speech recognition and gesture recognition over long periods of time. Our current system provides up to 60 minutes of human-ECA interaction in a jungle-survival …

This paper presents two main topics: a linguistic analysis of Japanese morphological lexicon focused on verb conjugation and a computational analysis of Japanese verb conjugation in Prolog programming. Prolog is one of the computer programming languages and is used to solve a problem logically with a number of statements called "clauses," which are defining various relationships of the entities. With respect to the linguistic aspect, this paper discusses Japanese verb formation, its conjugation patterns, twelve basic forms of Japanese verbs, and a Japanese morphophonemic process called “音便 (onbin)” by investigating 304 regular verbs and 2 irregular verbs. Among the several …

Virtual Rapport With Extraverted Agents, Jacqueline Brixey Jan 2015

Virtual Rapport With Extraverted Agents, Jacqueline Brixey

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Studies from psychology conclude that "birds of a feather flock together"- or, in other words, people tend to seek companionship with those who have a similar personality to their own. Researchers in the fields of Linguistics and Psychology have found numerous markers that differentiate the dialogue of extroverts from that of introverts. Recent work in Human Computer Interaction has sought to understand the nature of creating and maintaining rapport between humans and Embodied Conversational Agents (ECAs).

Seeking an interdisciplinary approach that combines knowledge from HCI, Linguistics, and Psychology, I sought to establish whether introverted users report the highest level of …

Synthetic Steganography: Methods For Generating And Detecting Covert Channels In Generated Media, Philip Carson Ritchey Jan 2015

Synthetic Steganography: Methods For Generating And Detecting Covert Channels In Generated Media, Philip Carson Ritchey

Open Access Dissertations

Issues of privacy in communication are becoming increasingly important. For many people and businesses, the use of strong cryptographic protocols is sufficient to protect their communications. However, the overt use of strong cryptography may be prohibited or individual entities may be prohibited from communicating directly. In these cases, a secure alternative to the overt use of strong cryptography is required. One promising alternative is to hide the use of cryptography by transforming ciphertext into innocuous-seeming messages to be transmitted in the clear. ^ In this dissertation, we consider the problem of synthetic steganography: generating and detecting covert channels in generated …

Characterization Of Prose By Rhetorical Structure For Machine Learning Classification, James Java Jan 2015

Characterization Of Prose By Rhetorical Structure For Machine Learning Classification, James Java

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Measures of classical rhetorical structure in text can improve accuracy in certain types of stylistic classification tasks such as authorship attribution. This research augments the relatively scarce work in the automated identification of rhetorical figures and uses the resulting statistics to characterize an author's rhetorical style. These characterizations of style can then become part of the feature set of various classification models.

Our Rhetorica software identifies 14 classical rhetorical figures in free English text, with generally good precision and recall, and provides summary measures to use in descriptive or classification tasks. Classification models trained on Rhetorica's rhetorical measures paired with …

Motivation And Learning Of Non-Traditional Computing Education Students In A Web-Based Combined Laboratory, Michael Jesse Green Jan 2015

Motivation And Learning Of Non-Traditional Computing Education Students In A Web-Based Combined Laboratory, Michael Jesse Green

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Hands-on experiential learning activities are an important component of computing education disciplines. Laboratory environments provide learner access to real world equipment for completing experiments. Local campus facilities are commonly used to host laboratory classes. While campus facilities afford hands-on experience with real equipment high maintenance costs, restricted access, and limited flexibility diminish laboratory effectiveness. Web-based simulation and remote laboratory formats have emerged as low cost options, which allow open access and learner control. Simulation lacks fidelity and remote laboratories are considered too complex for novice learners.

A web-based combined laboratory format incorporates the benefits of each format while mitigating the …

About thirteen ichnogenera were systematically described, including Arenicolites, ?Balanoglossites, Chondrites, Cylindrichnus, Diplocraterion, Planolites, Palaeophycus, Phycodes, Rhizocorallium, Rusophycus, Skolithos, Thalassinoides, and Zoophycos. Six trace fossil associations under different sedimentary environments have been recognized as follows: the Skolithos and Diplocraterion-Skolithos associations mainly consist of domichnia derived from a high-energy zone of …

A New Systematic And Flexible Method For Developing Hierarchical Decision-Making Models, Ulaş Beldek, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu Jan 2015

A New Systematic And Flexible Method For Developing Hierarchical Decision-Making Models, Ulaş Beldek, Mehmet Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The common practice in multilevel decision-making (DM) systems is to achieve the final decision by going through a finite number of DM levels. In this study, a new multilevel DM model is proposed. This model is called the hierarchical DM (HDM) model and it is supposed to provide a flexible way of interaction and information flow between the consecutive levels that allows policy changes in DM procedures if necessary. In the model, in the early levels, there are primary agents that perform DM tasks. As the levels increase, the information associated with these agents is combined through suitable processes and …

A Robust Algorithm Based On A Failure-Sensitive Matrix For Fault Diagnosis Of Power Systems: An Application On Power Transformers, Yunus Bi̇çen, Faruk Aras

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a robust algorithm for fault diagnosis of power system equipment based on a failure-sensitive matrix (FSM) is presented. The FSM is a dynamic matrix structure updated by multiple measurements (online) and test results (offline) on the systems. The algorithm uses many different artificial intelligence and expert system methods for adaptively detecting the location of faults, emerging failures, and causes of failures. In this algorithm, all data obtained from the power transformer, which have various nonlinear input and output parameters, are processed using the parallel matrix structure of the FSM to reach a global solution quickly. The parameters …

We evaluate the built framework and report its performance in the applications of word sense disambiguation and named entities matching. The system performance is compared …

New Metrics For Clustering Of Identical Products Over Imperfect Data, Zeki̇ Yetgi̇n, Furkan Gözükara Jan 2015

New Metrics For Clustering Of Identical Products Over Imperfect Data, Zeki̇ Yetgi̇n, Furkan Gözükara

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper introduces the concept of product identity-clustering based on new similarity metrics and new performance metrics for web-crawled products. Product identity-clustering is defined here as the clustering of identical products, e.g., for price comparison purposes. Products blindly crawled over web sources, e.g., online marketplaces, have different description formats, where the features describing the same products differ in both number and representation formats. This problem causes imperfect feature vectors, where the vectors are considered to be not uniform in length and structure, with the features of various data types (numeric, categorical), and unknown vector structures. Furthermore, the product information usually …

Optimization Of Electrical Power Transmission Lines'' Routing Using Ahp, Fuzzy Ahp, And Gis, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin Jan 2015

Optimization Of Electrical Power Transmission Lines'' Routing Using Ahp, Fuzzy Ahp, And Gis, Hasan Eroğlu, Musa Aydin

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

With the increase of people's need for energy, electrical energy transmission has become a very important issue as well as electrical power generation. One of the most important problems in energy transmission is finding the best route in a very complex study area. To date, many people from different disciplines have come together to find the best routes by manual methods like using paper maps and deciding which route is the least-cost path (LCP) to the destination point. Today it is known that, in engineering problems, and especially in path-finding or site-placing problems, the Geographic Information System (GIS) is the …

Variable Charge/Discharge Time-Interval Control Strategy Of Bess For Wind Power Dispatch, Wei Chai, Zheng Li, Xu Cai Jan 2015

Variable Charge/Discharge Time-Interval Control Strategy Of Bess For Wind Power Dispatch, Wei Chai, Zheng Li, Xu Cai

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A variable charge/discharge time-interval ($T_{C/D})$ control strategy of a battery energy storage system (BESS) for wind power dispatch is proposed in this paper, aiming at: 1) extending the BESS life, 2) reducing the total BESS energy loss, and 3) increasing the dispatch tracking accuracy. A multifactor life model of a large-scale BESS containing four factors, charge/discharge rate, times, $T_{C/D}$, and temperature, is developed, which has taken into account the cell series/parallel effects and BESS operational characteristics. A comprehensive evaluation system including BESS aging level (BAL), energy loss index (ELI), and tracking inaccuracy index (TII) is proposed, and the relationships between …

Speech Emotion Recognition Using Nonlinear Dynamics Features, Ali Shahzadi, Alireza Ahmadyfard, Ali Harimi, Khashayar Yaghmaie Jan 2015

Speech Emotion Recognition Using Nonlinear Dynamics Features, Ali Shahzadi, Alireza Ahmadyfard, Ali Harimi, Khashayar Yaghmaie

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Recent developments in man--machine interaction have motivated researchers to recognize human emotion from speech signals. In this study, we propose using nonlinear dynamics features (NLDs) for emotion recognition. NLDs are extracted from the geometrical properties of the reconstructed phase space of speech signals. The traditional prosodic and spectral features are also used as a benchmark. The Fisher discriminant ratio acts as a filter to remove irrelevant features quickly. Then a wrapper method based on a genetic algorithm and support vector machine is employed to find the best feature subset that obtains the maximum recognition rate. The classification accuracy of the …

Exploring Hierarchical Visualization Designs Using Phylogenetic Trees, Shaomeng Li, R. Jordan Crouser, Garth Griffin, Connor Gramazio, Hans-Jörg Schulz, Hank Childs, Remco Chang Jan 2015

Exploring Hierarchical Visualization Designs Using Phylogenetic Trees, Shaomeng Li, R. Jordan Crouser, Garth Griffin, Connor Gramazio, Hans-Jörg Schulz, Hank Childs, Remco Chang

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Ongoing research on information visualization has produced an ever-increasing number of visualization designs. Despite this activity, limited progress has been made in categorizing this large number of information visualizations. This makes understanding their common design features challenging, and obscures the yet unexplored areas of novel designs. With this work, we provide categorization from an evolutionary perspective, leveraging a computational model to represent evolutionary processes, the phylogenetic tree. The result — a phylogenetic tree of a design corpus of hierarchical visualizations — enables better understanding of the various design features of hierarchical information visualizations, and further illuminates the space in which …
