Prediction Method For Health Degree Of Front Bearing Of Wind Turbine Generator And Implementation, Yin Shi, Guolian Hou, Chi Yan, Linjuan Gong, Xiaodong Hu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the deterioration trend of front bearing of doubly-fed wind turbine generator, a new combined modeling method is proposed to predict health degree of front bearing of generator. The GMM is used to identify operating conditions of wind turbines. The temperature model of front bearing based on ELM is established respectively in each sub-condition. Combining with temperature residual characteristics and time-frequency characteristics of vibration signal, the health degree of front bearing is calculated. Based on attention mechanism, the Bi-LSTM neural network is proposed to model and predict health degree of front bearing. The result shows that the …
The Early Medieval Transition: Diet Reconstruction, Mobility, And Culture Contact In The Ravenna Countryside, Northern Italy, Anastasia Temkina
The Early Medieval Transition: Diet Reconstruction, Mobility, And Culture Contact In The Ravenna Countryside, Northern Italy, Anastasia Temkina
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research project evaluates the effects of increased mobility and culture contact on dietary practices, and on dietary variation among people buried at two northern Italian sites, Chiunsano di Ficarolo and Chiesazza di Ficarolo, located near the ancient Roman capital of Ravenna and dating 4th to 7th century CE. The Early Medieval period was a time of change, political instability, migration and invasion of the “barbarian” tribes, and diet was not unaffected. In particular, it is hypothesized that a new staple crop, millet, was introduced and that meat consumption had increased. The goal of this research is to use stable …
Turkic Interlingua: A Case Study Of Machine Translation In Low-Resource Languages, Jamshidbek Mirzakhalov
Turkic Interlingua: A Case Study Of Machine Translation In Low-Resource Languages, Jamshidbek Mirzakhalov
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Machine Translation (MT) has the potential to bridge the gap between the developed world and the marginalized communities by making information more accessible in real-time. While there are over 7000 spoken languages in the world, only about a hundred have access to high-quality MT systems and even fewer enjoy the benefits of more advanced language technologies. Unfortunately, resource scarcity and the lack of digital infrastructure are only some of the many challenges associated with globalizing NLP. Many large-scale multilingual studies and datasets often get little to no feedback from native speakers or linguistic experts of the languages involved, leading to …
Spatial Knowledge Representation Model Of Simulation Scenario Based On Ontology, Zhu Jie, Hongjun Zhang
Spatial Knowledge Representation Model Of Simulation Scenario Based On Ontology, Zhu Jie, Hongjun Zhang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Military simulation scenario has abundant spatial knowledge and is closely related to various models of combat simulation. In view of the lack of uniform specification for the description of simulation scenario knowledge, it is necessary to construct a spatial knowledge representation model in line with spatial thinking to effectively analyze the spatial entities and their interrelationships in simulation scenario. The ontology method is used to establish spatial knowledge domain ontology and form the formal description specification of spatial knowledge concept; the spatial knowledge structure is described hierarchically by using the method of concept knowledge tree, clarifying the semantic logic …
Identifying Optimal Course Structures Using Topic Models, Tehut Tesfaye Biru
Identifying Optimal Course Structures Using Topic Models, Tehut Tesfaye Biru
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
This research project investigates whether there exists an optimal way to structure topics in educational course content that results in higher levels of engagement among students. It is implemented by fitting topic models to transcripts of educational videos contained in the Khan Academy platform. The fitted models were used to extract topic trajectories across time for each video and subsequently clustered based on whether they have similar “shapes”. The differences in mean engagement metrics per cluster suggest that some course shapes are more palatable to students regardless of subject matter. Additionally, the topic trajectories suggest a constant progression of topics …

On The Generalization Of Interval Valued Fuzzy Generalized Bi-Ideals In Ordered Semigroups, Muhammad S. Ali Khan, Saleem Abdullah, Kostaq Hila
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, a new general form than interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideals in ordered semigroups is introduced. The concept of interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideals is initiated and several properties and characterizations are provided. A condition for an interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideal to be an interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideal is obtained. Using implication operators and the notion of implication-based an interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideal, characterizations of an interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideal and an interval valued fuzzy generalized bi-ideal are considered.
Why Cauchy Membership Functions: Efficiency, Javier Viana, Stephan Ralescu, Kelly Cohen, Anca Ralescu, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Cauchy Membership Functions: Efficiency, Javier Viana, Stephan Ralescu, Kelly Cohen, Anca Ralescu, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Fuzzy techniques depend heavily on eliciting meaningful membership functions for the fuzzy sets used. Often such functions are obtained from data. Just as often they are obtained from experts knowledgable of the domain and the problem being addressed. However, there are cases when neither is possible, for example because of insufficient data, or unavailable experts. What functions should one choose and what should guide such choice? This paper argues in favor of using Cauchy membership functions, thus named because their expression is similar to that of the Cauchy distributions. The paper provides a theoretical explanation for this choice.
Lexical Complexity Prediction With Assembly Models, Aadil Islam
Lexical Complexity Prediction With Assembly Models, Aadil Islam
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Tuning the complexity of one's writing is essential to presenting ideas in a logical, intuitive manner to audiences. This paper describes a system submitted by team BigGreen to LCP 2021 for predicting the lexical complexity of English words in a given context. We assemble a feature engineering-based model and a deep neural network model with an underlying Transformer architecture based on BERT. While BERT itself performs competitively, our feature engineering-based model helps in extreme cases, eg. separating instances of easy and neutral difficulty. Our handcrafted features comprise a breadth of lexical, semantic, syntactic, and novel phonetic measures. Visualizations of BERT …
Fine-Grained Detection Of Hate Speech Using Bertoxic, Yakoob Khan
Fine-Grained Detection Of Hate Speech Using Bertoxic, Yakoob Khan
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
This thesis describes our approach towards the fine-grained detection of hate speech using deep learning. We leverage the transformer encoder architecture to propose BERToxic, a system that fine-tunes a pre-trained BERT model to locate toxic text spans in a given text and utilizes additional post-processing steps to refine the prediction boundaries. The post-processing steps involve (1) labeling character offsets between consecutive toxic tokens as toxic and (2) assigning a toxic label to words that have at least one token labeled as toxic. Through experiments, we show that these two post-processing steps improve the performance of our model by 4.16% on …
Deterring Intellectual Property Thieves: Algorithmic Generation Of Adversary-Aware Fake Knowledge Graphs, Snow Kang
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Publicly available estimates suggest that in the U.S. alone, IP theft costs our economy between $225 billion and $600 billion each year. In our paper, we propose combating IP theft by generating fake versions of technical documents. If an enterprise system has n fake documents for each real document, any IP thief must sift through an array of documents in an attempt to separate the original from a sea of fakes. This costs the attacker time and money - and inflicts pain and frustration on the part of its technical staff.
Leveraging a graph-theoretic approach, we created the Clique-FakeKG algorithm …
Exploring The Long Tail, Joseph H. Hajjar
Exploring The Long Tail, Joseph H. Hajjar
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
The migration of datasets online has created a near-infinite inventory for big name retailers such as Amazon and Netflix, giving rise to recommendation systems to assist users in navigating the massive catalog. This has also allowed for the possibility of retailers storing much less popular, uncommon items which would not appear in a more traditional brick-and-mortar setting due to the cost of storage. Nevertheless, previous work has highlighted the profit potential which lies in the so-called "long tail'' of niche, unpopular items. Unfortunately, due to the limited amount of data in this subset of the inventory, recommendation systems often struggle …
Beyond Streamflow: Call For A National Data Repository Of Streamflow Presence For Streams And Rivers In The United States, Kendra E. Kaiser
Beyond Streamflow: Call For A National Data Repository Of Streamflow Presence For Streams And Rivers In The United States, Kendra E. Kaiser
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Observations of the presence or absence of surface water in streams are useful for characterizing streamflow permanence, which includes the frequency, duration, and spatial extent of surface flow in streams and rivers. Such data are particularly valuable for headwater streams, which comprise the vast majority of channel length in stream networks, are often non-perennial, and are frequently the most data deficient. Datasets of surface water presence exist across multiple data collection groups in the United States but are not well aligned for easy integration. Given the value of these data, a unified approach for organizing information on surface water presence …
Interpreting Attention-Based Models For Natural Language Processing, Steven J. Signorelli Jr
Interpreting Attention-Based Models For Natural Language Processing, Steven J. Signorelli Jr
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
Large pre-trained language models (PLMs) such as BERT and XLNet have revolutionized the field of natural language processing (NLP). The interesting thing is that they are pre- trained through unsupervised tasks, so there is a natural curiosity as to what linguistic knowledge these models have learned from only unlabeled data. Fortunately, these models’ architectures are based on self-attention mechanisms, which are naturally interpretable. As such, there is a growing body of work that uses attention to gain insight as to what linguistic knowledge is possessed by these models. Most attention-focused studies use BERT as their subject, and consequently the field …
Krippendorffsalpha: An R Package For Measuring Agreement Using Krippendorff's Alpha Coefficient, John Hughes
Krippendorffsalpha: An R Package For Measuring Agreement Using Krippendorff's Alpha Coefficient, John Hughes
The R Journal
R package krippendorffsalpha provides tools for measuring agreement using Krippendorff’s α coefficient, a well-known nonparametric measure of agreement (also called inter-rater reliability and various other names). This article first develops Krippendorff’s α in a natural way and situates α among statistical procedures. Then, the usage of package krippendorffsalpha is illustrated via analyses of two datasets, the latter of which was collected during an imaging study of hip cartilage. The package permits users to apply the α methodology using built-in distance functions for the nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio levels of measurement. User-defined distance functions are also supported. The fitting function …

Simplified Intuitionistic Neutrosophic Soft Set And Its Application On Diagnosing Psychological Disorder By Using Similarity Measure, Veerappan Chinnadurai, Albert Bobin
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The primary focus of this manuscript comprises three sections. Initially, we introduce the concept of a simplified intuitionistic neutrosophic soft set. We impose an intuitionistic condition between the membership values of truth and falsity such that their sum does not exceed unity. Similarly, for indeterminacy, the membership value is a real number from the closed interval [0, 1]. Hence, the sum of membership values of truth, indeterminacy, and falsity does not exceed two. We present the notion of necessity, possibility, concentration, and dilation operators and establish some of its properties. Second, we define the similarity measure between two simplified intuitionistic …

Exploring The Use Of Social Media To Infer Relationships Between Demographics, Psychographics And Vaccine Hesitancy, Abhimanyu Kapur
Computer Science Senior Theses
The growing popularity of social media as a platform to obtain information and share one's opinions on various topics makes it a rich source of information for research. In this study, we aimed to develop a framework to infer relationships between demographic and psychographic characteristics of a user and their opinion on a specific narrative - in this case, their stance on taking the COVID-19 vaccine. Twitter was the chosen platform due to the large USA user base and easily available data. Demographic traits included Race, Age, Gender, and Human-vs-Organization Status. Psychographic traits included the Big Five personality traits (Conscientiousness, …
A Performance Survey Of Text-Based Sentiment Analysis Methods For Automating Usability Evaluations, Kelsi Van Damme
A Performance Survey Of Text-Based Sentiment Analysis Methods For Automating Usability Evaluations, Kelsi Van Damme
Master's Theses
Usability testing, or user experience (UX) testing, is increasingly recognized as an important part of the user interface design process. However, evaluating usability tests can be expensive in terms of time and resources and can lack consistency between human evaluators. This makes automation an appealing expansion or alternative to conventional usability techniques.
Early usability automation focused on evaluating human behavior through quantitative metrics but the explosion of opinion mining and sentiment analysis applications in recent decades has led to exciting new possibilities for usability evaluation methods.
This paper presents a survey of modern, open-source sentiment analyzers’ usefulness in extracting and …

Is Twitter A Bad Place? The Responsibility That Social Media May Have Had In The 2021 Storming Of Capitol Hill., Ioannis Stavrakakis, Damian Gordon, Dympna O'Sullivan, Andrea Curley
Conference papers
The events of 6 th January 2021 in the United States of America, where rioters stormed the heart of their democracy, the US Capitol Complex (which houses their bicameral parliament) were shocking to see. The reasons for this riot were myriad, including to protest the outcomes of the presidential elections and two senate elections, as well as to prevent the counting that day of the electoral votes that formally certify the election result. These events will be analysed and reflected upon for years to come, and blame will be placed at many people’s doors, and inevitability one that has already …

Check Your Tech, Whose Responsibility Is It When Cyberharassment Occurs?, Dympna O'Sullivan, Damian Gordon, Michael Collins, Emma Murphy
Conference papers
Social media has become a dominant aspect of many people’s lives in many countries. Unfortunately that resulted in widespread issues of bullying and harassment. While frequently this harrassment is intentional, there have been occasions where automated processes have been inadvertently responsible for this sort of harassment. The software tools that allow people to harass others could have further features added to them to reduce the amount of harassment that occurs, but more often than not, where programmers are developing these systems then don’t anticipate the range of ways that these technologies will be used (this is called “consequence scanning”). The …
Hierarchical Hyperbolicity Of Graph Products And Graph Braid Groups, Daniel James Solomon Berlyne
Hierarchical Hyperbolicity Of Graph Products And Graph Braid Groups, Daniel James Solomon Berlyne
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis comprises three original contributions by the author concerning hierarchical hyperbolicity, a coarse geometric tool developed by Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto to provide a common framework for studying aspects of non-positive curvature in a wide variety of groups and spaces.
We show that any graph product of finitely generated groups is hierarchically hyperbolic relative to its vertex groups. We apply this to answer two questions of Genevois about the electrification of a graph product of finite groups. We also answer two questions of Behrstock, Hagen, and Sisto: we show that the syllable metric on a graph product forms a …

On Predicting Personal Values Of Social Media Users Using Community-Specific Language Features And Personal Value Correlation, Amila Silva, Pei Chi Lo, Ee-Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Personal values have significant influence on individuals’ behaviors, preferences, and decision making. It is therefore not a surprise that personal values of a person could influence his or her social media content and activities. Instead of getting users to complete personal value questionnaire, researchers have looked into a non-intrusive and highly scalable approach to predict personal values using user-generated social media data. Nevertheless, geographical differences in word usage and profile information are issues to be addressed when designing such prediction models. In this work, we focus on analyzing Singapore users’ personal values, and developing effective models to predict their personal …
Clickbait Detection In Youtube Videos, Ruchira Gothankar
Clickbait Detection In Youtube Videos, Ruchira Gothankar
Master's Projects
YouTube videos often include captivating descriptions and intriguing thumbnails designed to increase the number of views, and thereby increase the revenue for the person who posted the video. This creates an incentive for people to post clickbait videos, in which the content might deviate significantly from the title, description, or thumbnail. In effect, users are tricked into clicking on clickbait videos. In this research, we consider the challenging problem of detecting clickbait YouTube videos. We experiment with logistic regression, random forests, and multilayer perceptrons, based on a variety of textual features. We obtain a maximum accuracy in excess of 94%.
Towards A Machine Learning Based Generalizable Framework For Detecting Covid-19 Misinformation On Social Media, Yuanzhi Chen
Towards A Machine Learning Based Generalizable Framework For Detecting Covid-19 Misinformation On Social Media, Yuanzhi Chen
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, online social media has become a conduit for the rapid propagation of misinformation. The misinformation is a type of fake news that is created inadvertently without the intention of causing harm. Yet COVID-19 misinformation has caused serious social disruptions including accidental death and destruction of public property. Timely prevention of the propagation of online misinformation requires the development of automated detection tools. Machine learning (ML) based models have been used to automate techniques for identifying fake news. These techniques involve converting text data …

Malware Classification is used to distinguish unique types of malware from each other.
This project aims to carry out malware classification using word embeddings which are used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to identify and evaluate the relationship between words of a sentence. Word embeddings generated by BERT and Word2Vec for malware samples to carry out multi-class classification. BERT is a transformer based pre- trained natural language processing (NLP) model which can be used for a wide range of tasks such as question answering, paraphrase generation and next sentence prediction. However, the attention mechanism of a pre-trained BERT model can …
Fake News Analysis And Graph Classification On A Covid-19 Twitter Dataset, Kriti Gupta
Fake News Analysis And Graph Classification On A Covid-19 Twitter Dataset, Kriti Gupta
Master's Projects
Earlier researches have showed that the spread of fake news through social media can have a huge impact to society and also to individuals in an extremely negative way. In this work we aim to study the spread of fake news compared to real news in a social network. We do that by performing classical social network analysis to discover various characteristics, and formulate the problem as a binary classification, where we have graphs modeling the spread of fake and real news. For our experiments we rely on how news are propagated through a popular social media services such as …
Wildfire Risk Prediction For A Smart City, Rekha Rani
Wildfire Risk Prediction For A Smart City, Rekha Rani
Master's Projects
Wildfires are uncontrolled fires that may lead to the destruction of biodiversity, soil fertility, and human resources. There is a need for timely detection and prediction of wildfires to minimize their disastrous effects. In this research, we propose a wildfire prediction model that relies on multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) to explicitly evaluates multiple conflicting criteria in decision making and weave the wildfire risks into the city’s resiliency plan. We incorporate fuzzy set theory to handle imprecision and uncertainties. In the process, we create a new data set that includes California cities’ weather, vegetation, topography, and population density records. The model …

Classifying Illegal Advertisements On The Darknet Using Nlp, Karan Shashin Shah
Master's Projects
The Darknet has become a place to conduct various illegal activities like child labor, contract murder, drug selling while staying anonymous. Traditionally, international and government agencies try to control these activities, but most of those actions are manual and time-consuming. Recently, various researchers developed Machine Learning (ML) approaches trying to aid in the process of detecting illegal activities. The above problem can benefit by using different Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. More specifically, researchers have used various classical topic modeling techniques like bag of words, N-grams, Term Frequency, Term Frequency Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) to represent features and train machine …
Translating Natural Language Queries To Sparql, Shreya Satish Bhajikhaye
Translating Natural Language Queries To Sparql, Shreya Satish Bhajikhaye
Master's Projects
The Semantic Web is an extensive knowledge base that contains facts in the form of RDF
triples. These facts are not easily accessible to the average user because to use them requires
an understanding of ontologies and a query language like SPARQL. Question answering systems
form a layer of abstraction on linked data to overcome these issues. These systems allow the
user to input a question in a natural language and receive the equivalent SPARQL query. The
user can then execute the query on the database to fetch the desired results. The standard
techniques involved in translating natural language questions …

Data is an important aspect in any form be it communication, reviews, news articles, social media data, machine or real-time data. With the emergence of Covid-19, a pandemic seen like no other in recent times, information is being poured in from all directions on the internet. At times it is overwhelming to determine which data to read and follow. Another crucial aspect is separating factual data from distorted data that is being circulated widely. The title or short description of this data can play a key role. Many times, these descriptions can deceive a user with unwanted information. The user …
