An In Vivo Perfusion Apparatus For Studies On Gingival Disease In The Albino Rat : Assessment By A Perfusion Of The Enzymes Collagenase And Hyaluronidase, James A. Smith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …
Methods Of Controlling Jackrabbits, James Evans, Paul L. Hegdal, Richard E. Griffith Jr.
Methods Of Controlling Jackrabbits, James Evans, Paul L. Hegdal, Richard E. Griffith Jr.
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 4th (1970)
Since 1963, biologists of the Denver Wildlife Research Center have been investigating methods of alleviating agricultural damage by the black-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus californicus). Of the several approaches to control, most biological methods (predation, habitat manipulation, disease and parasites, and chemosterilants) appear impractical with present knowledge. Mechanical control except for fence barriers, usually has limited effectiveness. Currently, the most useful approach is still chemical control. Improved baiting techniques and several chemical control agents, including an experimental toxicant highly selective for jackrabbits, are described.
Concurrent Infections Of Schistosoma Mansoni And Trypanosoma Equiperdum In Mice, Venus Ee-Siriporn
Concurrent Infections Of Schistosoma Mansoni And Trypanosoma Equiperdum In Mice, Venus Ee-Siriporn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine factors which may influence the survival time of mice infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum and the effects of T. equiperdum on mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.
In order to maintain experimentally obtained standard hours of survival (88 hrs) in mice inoculated intraperitoneally with 150,000 T. equiperdum, it was found that trypanosomes removed from the donor rat should be kept at 25 C and all counts, dilutions of the organisms, and injection should be completed within 1 hour after removal from the donor host. Survival time of mice is increased as the …

A Survey Of The Hospital Experience Of The Isolated And Non-Isolated Patient, Rose Marie Olson Kuhn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The descriptive survey was the method used to conduct the study to find differences in the amount of nurse contact between the isolated patient's and the non-isolated patient's hospital experience, and to explore their feelings concerning their hospitalization. Ten patients, on the surgical units of three hospitals, were included in the study. Five of the patients were isolated because of an infectious disease and comprised Group I. Five patients who were not isolated served as a control and comprised Group II. Data were collected in two main categories: (1) the amount of nurse-patient contact, type of personnel visiting the patient, …

Identification Of Emotional Needs Of Patients With Infectious Hepatitis, Elizabeth Tidmore Shafqat
Identification Of Emotional Needs Of Patients With Infectious Hepatitis, Elizabeth Tidmore Shafqat
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It was the purpose of this study to identify the emotional needs of patients with infectious hepatitis through the use of nursing process studies. The information obtained, it was hoped, would be helpful in giving nurses better insight into the emotional needs of these patients and to give a basis for planning nursing care.
The descriptive survey was the method used; the tool, the nursing process study. Nursing care was given to six patients between the ages of 18 and 45 who had infectious hepatitis without other complications.
The nursing process studies were filled out by the investigator on each …

A Study Of Fever Differences Following Cardiac Surgery, Cleta Phyllis Lane
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to find out whether the temperature level following heart and great vessel surgery is greater following the use of the heart-lung machine than those following closed heart surgery or cardiac and great vessel surgery with the use of hypothermia.
The method used was the descriptive survey. Data were obtained from medical records in one selected hospital. The desired number of charts was 50 for each of the three categories. The categories were identified by groups as follows:
Group I: patients having had cardiac surgery by a closed heart technique. All of the patients in …
Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway
Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. The procedure of x-ray was selected as being common and typical. The method used was the descriptive survey. The tools used were the taking of a series of six blood pressure readings per child, the administration of two forms of a short psychological test …

Concluding Remarks Of Appreciation With Comments On Histoplasmosis And Cryptococcosis, Philip J. Spear
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)
The record of this meeting will stand as a permanent tribute to Dr. Walter Howard and his associates. It should remind them for years to come of their worthwhile contribution in conceiving, organizing, promoting, and handling the details of this first Vertebrate Pest Control Conference. Those of us privileged to attend will be grateful for the opportunity to enlarge our acquain¬tance with the workers in the vertebrate pest control field, and to share in this exchange of information. The National Pest Control Association, whose members provide among other services, control of many vertebrate pests, draw information and guidance from many …
Infectious Disease Hazards To Pest Control Operators, Paul Arnstein Dvm, Mph
Infectious Disease Hazards To Pest Control Operators, Paul Arnstein Dvm, Mph
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)
One of the primary reasons for controlling most vertebrate pests is the role these creatures play as links in the infection chain of certain agents pathogenic to man. It is reasonable to assume that the persons engaged in the eradication or removal of pests are at some risk of contacting zoonoses - diseases transmissible from animals to man. Unfortunately, histories or epidemiological data of occupational infections among pest control operators are not available; perhaps this society may become a future assembly point for statistics in this field. The hazards therefore have to be approached theoretically: diseases known to be associated …

The Pest Animal Problem: Keynote Speech, W. C. Jacobsen
Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 1st (1962)
There is an inscription across the top of the impressive facade of the National Archives Temple in Washington, D. 0., which reads: "What is Past is Prologue." So be it. Perhaps it applies to us here- At least the inscription furnishes a basis for me to indulge in a few com¬ments of historical significance as we undertake consideration of vertebrate pest control in its many phases. The earlier documents available to us reveal that with every expansion or westward advance into newer areas of agricultural production or livestock enterprises there also arose a variety of pest animal problems. However, it …

Bacteriol. 83:1140- 1146. 1962-Electron-transport particles (ETP) have been isolated from Bacillus stearothermophilus. They are capable of oxidizing such substrates as succinate, malate, diphosphopyridine nucleotide, p-phenylenediamine, and hydroquinone. Difference spectra indicated bands of cytochromes a3, b, and c. A chromatographic procedure for purification of cytochrome c has been described. The role of quinonelike intermediates in the ETP was implied by the restorative effect of coenzyme Q and vitamin K1 on material treated …
Fermentation Of Sugar Acids By Bacteria, Gordon B. Robbins, Keith H. Lewis
Fermentation Of Sugar Acids By Bacteria, Gordon B. Robbins, Keith H. Lewis
Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications
Bacterial fermentation of the sugar acids has received little attention in comparison with the wide-spread use of the common aldoses and sugar alcohols. These acids, and especially their sodium salts, are well suited to bacteriological techniques because of their solubility and heat stability, yet their usefulness for investigating the relationship of chemical structure to biological utilization has only recently been recognized. Their application to systematic differentiation of bacteria has also been neglected. Kendall, Bly and Haner (1923) concluded from a study of three monocarboxylic acids and three dicarboxylic acids that these compounds possessed little value for the differentiation of bacterial …

Aeroecological processes, especially powered flight of animals, can rapidly connect biological communities across the globe. This can have profound consequences for evolutionary diversification, energy and nutrient transfers, and the spread of infectious diseases. The latter is of particular consequence for human populations, since migratory birds are known to host diseases which have a history of transmission into domestic poultry or even jumping to human hosts. In this chapter, we present a scenario under which a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain enters North America from East Asia via postmolting waterfowl migration. We use an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the …
