Studies On 4-Hydroxycoumarin Anticoagulants Part I: The Reversible Removal Of Carbon 2 Of 3-Substituted-4-Hydroxycoumarins Part Ii: The Synthesis And Urinary Excretion Rates Of The Enantiomers Of Warfarin-4-14c And Marcumar-2-14c, Lloyd Allen Goding
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The hydrolytic removal and subsequent reinsertion of carbon 2 of a series of 3-substituted-4-hydroxycoumarins has been accomplished. The removal of carbon 2 presents an effective synthetic route to o-hydroxyketones with complex side chains. o-Hydroxyketones when condensed with alkyl carbonates gave good yields of 4-hydroxycoumarins. When this was carried out with ethyl carbonate-carbonyl-14C a radio label was inserted in position 2. It was shown that this decarboxylation-carboxylation cycle did not involve racemization of an optically active α-carbon on a side chain in position 3. This method was used to prepare the enantiomers of Marcumar-2-14C(3-α-ethyl-benzyl-4-hydroxycoumarin). The enantiomers of …

Effects Of Main Stem Impoundments And Channelization Upon The Limnology Of The Missouri River, Nebraska, Larry A. Morris, Ralph N. Langemeier, Thomas R. Russell, Arthur Witt Jr.
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
Rigid control has been imposed upon the Missouri River by impounding over one-half of the upper 1,500 miles and by channeling most of the remaining river within permanent, narrow banks. These controls have caused environmental changes in the lower Missouri River, as shown by this study, of adjacent unchannelized and channelized sections of river below the main stem impoundments. Impoundments have regulated flow by evening maximum and minimum discharges and improved downstream water quality by decreasing turbidity and indirectly raising the dissolved oxygen. In addition the impoundments have contributed a limnetic cladoceran, Leptodora kindti, to the drift and have …

Activities Of The Faa Inter-Agency Bird Hazard Committee, John L. Seubert
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The Federal Aviation Administration established an Inter-Agency Bird Hazard Committee in September 1966 in recognition of the increased hazard of birds to aviation. This inter-agency group was formed to obtain and consolidate informa-tion about the bird-aircraft problem and to develop ways of lessening collisions between birds and aircraft. The committee includes representatives from the Fed-eral Aviation Administration, Civil Aeronautics Board, Department of Health, Edu-cation & Welfare, National Aeronautics & Space Administration, U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and the U.S. Navy. The activities of the committee have been limited primarily to an advisory role. It is …
Status Of Starlicide, Philip J. Spear
Status Of Starlicide, Philip J. Spear
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Starlicide is described as a slow-acting avicide for the control of starlings and blackbirds around livestock and poultry operations. The active ingredient is 3 -chloro-p-toluidine hydrochloride which has been identified by the Denver Re-search Center of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as DRC-1339. A casual review of information about this bird control material suggests the following paradoxes: The use of the chemical in bird control appears to be covered by a patent, but the licensor wishes to remain anonymous. The licensee, which produces and sells the commercial material, seems unwilling to discuss the product. Let me hasten to point …
Significance And Control Of Fungal Diseases Related To Bird Roosts, Robert J. Weeks
Significance And Control Of Fungal Diseases Related To Bird Roosts, Robert J. Weeks
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Certain fungi have been found frequently as saprophytes in areas containing large amounts of bird excreta. These fungi have the ability to survive, multiply, and cause disease once they have entered a host. Two of these are Crypto-coccus neoformans and Histoplasma capsulatum. Both may easily become airborne and be disseminated throughout an area by the prevailing winds. C. neo-formans is commonly isolated from the excreta of pigeon habitats, and in turn has been associated with clinical cases of cryptococcosis, while blackbird roosts, harboring H. capsulatum, have been responsible for several outbreaks of histoplasmosis. When either of these fungi have become …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
I guess the impetus for laws in our state, really was the action of the city of Boston in 1963, when the Parks and Recreation Department felt that it was time to do something about massive populations of pigeons on the Boston Commons and in the city. The Parks Department came to our agency to find out what could be done. We immediately found as a result of a reorganization and recodification of the laws some 20 years before, that it was illegal to use or apply poisons for the purpose of killing any birds or mammals in the Commonwealth …

New Materials For Bird Control, John W. Degrazio, Philip J. Spear
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
A variety of methods is necessary to solve the many bird damage problems that occur in agriculture and other fields of interest. It is apparent that no one method can be used to provide answers for all damage situations; each problem and problem area is unique and requires thorough knowledge and investigation before intelligent measures of bird control can be applied. Thus, basic research in the laboratory and initial field studies are necessary to arrive at the most safe, efficient, and economical method of bird damage control possible for each situa-tion. The use of chemicals for damage control is one …

A Conservation Department Approach To Environmental Contamination And Surveillance Problems, Leroy J. Korschgen
Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Historically, the Conservation Commission has allied itself with other state, federal, and private agencies that are concerned with control and management of wildlife. It was suggested about a year ago that a Memorandum of Understanding, specifying the policy and procedure for bird control and rat and mouse control by the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife in Missouri, would be desirable. Subsequent discussion with Bureau representatives led to the conclusion that a formal memorandum of understanding was unnecessary. The primary purpose of such documents is to formalize operating procedures in states where the Bureau carries on a continuous control program …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
The total scope of chemosterilants is very wide so I will comment only on the pigeon chemosterilant developed by G.D. Searle & Co. and then briefly on the role of chemosterilants, generally, in bird control. Searle's ORNITROL (SC-12937, azacosterol) is a chemosterilant which in-hibits reproduction in the pigeon and is to be used as a means of controlling pigeon populations. It is fed as a treated whole corn bait (0.1%) for a period of ten days and inhibits reproduction for about six months. We recommend treat-ment in the early spring just before the onset of the peak reproduction season to …

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings
Encephalitis or "inflammation of the brain" is a general term applied to a disorder which may have many causes. Usually this disorder is caused by a virus but it may also be produced by other types of micro-organisms. Encephalitis may also occur after an initial infection with mumps, measles and other childhood diseases, or following a vaccination, or as a result of a non-infectious process such as poisoning. Since encephalitis affects the brain, which in turn controls all body functions, encephalitis from any cause can show symptoms of general illness throughout the body such as headache, nausea and vomiting, fever, …

The Food & Drug Administration is concerned about birds in two areas. One is the direct contamination of foods, drugs and cosmetics by birds and the other is the possible contamination of these products by the chemicals used to control birds. Since its conception, the Food & Drug Administration has been concerned about the contamination of foodstuffs by birds. Like all animals, they have both their good and bad points. The one bad point is that they are carriers of certain diseases. In addition, the consumer of today is not ready to accept products which have been contaminated by fecal …

We are offering some remarks on what the entomologist would call the areas of cultural control. Our interest in this approach developed out of a series of information discussions we've had concerning regional planning pro-grams at Penn State. Our ideas on the applications of this to bird management are not well developed; we'd be happy to hear your suggestions and comments. The ideas of cultural control are not new and are only one of many approaches. But perhaps we are reaching a stage of public concern about bird problems and about environmental contamination which make the climate for long range …

I would like to bring to your attention a survey conducted by N.P.C.A. a couple of years ago that found that 45% of our Industry was willing to engage in the bird management field. The first thought that came to my mind was: what about the other 55% of our industry that was not willing to do bird management work? Why was this? Perhaps their interests are elsewhere in the Pest Control field; maybe they do not like heights or perhaps the tools of the bird management field are developed by each individual company and, therefore, not available through the …

New Computer Methods For Protein Crystallography, Martin Zwick
Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
New Computer Methods for Protein Crystallography, by Martin Zwick. Submitted to the Department of Biology on 30 August 1968 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The section, "MYOGLOBIN REFINEMENT," describes the fitting of an idealized polypeptide chain to a set of approximate backbone coordinates for the protein, sperm whale myoglobin. This procedure refines the structure by imposing upon it known bond distances and angles, and simultaneously derives a representation of the polypeptide conformation in terms of the values of the rotation angles about its single bonds. The overall rms and mean deviation between …

Determination Of Stability Constants At 25c For The Interaction In Aqueous Solution Of Serine With Co (Ii), Ni (Ii), Cd (Ii), Zn (Ii), And Cu (Ii) Ions, Liak Hwe Ma
Theses and Dissertations
Values of thermodynamic stability constants at 25°C for the complexes of serine with the metal ions. Co^2+, Ni^2+, Cd^2+, Zn^2+, and Cu^2+ were obtained from pH titration data. All measurements were made in aqueous solution, and data were obtained at three different ionic strengths for each metal ion studied. It was assumed that the activity of the zwitterion is unity. The effect of metal ion hydrolysis upon the log K values was taken into account for the calculations. For all the metal ions studied, stability constants for MA^+, MA_2, and MA_3^- were reported with the exception of copper (II) which …

An Instructional Method For Self-Administered Medications, Beryl Marx, Lorene Russell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
An experimental study was done to determine the effectiveness of an instructional method for older ambulatory patients taking prescribed self-administered medications. This method was developed to emphasize the physicians' specific orders, the purpose of medications, feedback of instruction and a plan for remembering and recording medications. The hypothesis tested was that a selected group of ambulatory patients age 60 and over with the instructional method would make significantly fewer errors than a similar control group with no instructions.
Sixty private patients from the Loma Linda University Hospital outpatient department were selected and randomly placed in the experimental and control groups. …

A new isothermal titration calorimeter has been designed to facilitate the study of heats of reaction and heats of solution at constant temperature. With this calorimeter, endothermic or exothermic processes can be studied at temperatures constant to ±0.0002°C. Heat effects are compensated by balancing the heat effect of the process taking place in the calorimeter against a variable heat and a constant cooling Peltier device. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and the heat of dilution of aqueous HClO_4 solutions. For these systems heats were measured to an accuracy of ±0.02 calorie. The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park
The Effect Of Thiamine And Its Antagonists On Plasma And Tissue Lactic Dehydrogenase In Rats, Dong Hwa Park
Theses and Dissertations
The lactic dehydrogenase activity in plasma and tissues was measured in the thiamine-deprived, the oxythiamine-treated and the pyrithiamine-treated rats as well as the control rats. The lactic dehydrogenase levels of brain and kidney were significantly increased by oxythiamine treatment. The enzyme activity in heart was markedly decreased only in the thiamine-deprived rats. Unlike the above tissues, the enzyme levels in liver were decreased by 29-44 per cent in all three types of thiamine deficiency, However, the enzyme activity in plasma was significantly increased only by pyrithiamine administration. The distribution patterns of lactic dehydrogenase isozymes were electrophoretically examined in these deficiencies. …

Economic Analysis Of Alternative Flood Control Measures, L. Douglas James, Thomas M. Rachford, James Ray Villines, Clyde R. Dempsey, James Norris Cline, Carlos Fix Miller
KWRRI Research Reports
Within the last few years, the growing realization that an effective flood control program must include non-structural measures (land use management and flood proofing) has resulted in Presidential Executive Order 11296 requiring Federal agencies to seek the optimum combination of structural and non-structural measures for flood control. The requirement has created a dilemma. No methodology is available for systematic evaluation of alternative combinations of structural and non-structural measures. Prospective procedures are too time consuming to be feasible under current financial and manpower limitations.
The only way out is to perform much of the planning process by digital computer. With this …

Concurrent Infections Of Schistosoma Mansoni And Trypanosoma Equiperdum In Mice, Venus Ee-Siriporn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to determine factors which may influence the survival time of mice infected with Trypanosoma equiperdum and the effects of T. equiperdum on mice infected with Schistosoma mansoni.
In order to maintain experimentally obtained standard hours of survival (88 hrs) in mice inoculated intraperitoneally with 150,000 T. equiperdum, it was found that trypanosomes removed from the donor rat should be kept at 25 C and all counts, dilutions of the organisms, and injection should be completed within 1 hour after removal from the donor host. Survival time of mice is increased as the …
