Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Waters Of The Springfield Area, Missouri, Anita Louise Williams Jan 1973

Heavy Metal Concentrations In The Waters Of The Springfield Area, Missouri, Anita Louise Williams

Masters Theses

"Water samples consisting of streams, springs, lakes, deep wells, and shallow wells were collected from various locations around the Springfield area. These were analysed for concentrations of the heavy metals of lead, copper, cadmium, zinc, mercury, and iron. Heavy metal contents in the waters occasionally show local concentrations. The zinc content can be related to known minor mineralized areas around Springfield. Some iron content in the surface waters and shallow aquifers is contributed by the iron-bearing clays and pyrites in the shallow formations.

The ranges of heavy metal values in the Springfield area are in ppb: lead, 1 to 70; …

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1973

Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Grey Kangaroo Management Programme, introduced in 1971 by the Department of Fisheries and Fauna, is designed to ensure the long-term conservation of the grey kangaroo, while at the same time recognising the right of the landholder to protect his primary production from damage.

One of the points which has arisen after examination of the programme is that some individual farmers are not fully aware of the requirements of the regulations.

The Contribution Of Phonon-Induced Tunneling To Donor Esr Spectral Narrowing In Semiconductors, David Lawrence Meier Jan 1973

The Contribution Of Phonon-Induced Tunneling To Donor Esr Spectral Narrowing In Semiconductors, David Lawrence Meier

Masters Theses

"The narrowing of donor electron spin resonance spectra with increasing donor concentration ND and increasing temperature T has been observed in semiconductors in the past. One proposed explanation for this phenomenon has been narrowing due to electron motion caused by phonon-induced tunneling (hopping) between donor sites. According to the Anderson narrowing theory, the line width of the narrowed line can be expressed in terms of the average square spread of the non-narrowed spectrum, < H²>ave, and the average frequency of electron motion, ωn. Previous work has been done on narrowing by hopping, but rigorous expressions for ω …

D.C. Background On Predator Control Legislation, Michael Frome Jan 1973

D.C. Background On Predator Control Legislation, Michael Frome

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The tragic fiasco of federal predator control as we have known it is finished. The American people will no longer tolerate it. In this age of environmental concern, the people will not allow their tax dollars to be diverted for such a destructive and wasteful war against living wild creatures for the exclusive benefit of the sheep industry. There is now no turning back to old ways.

Indiscriminate trapping, shooting and poisoning have reduced some of the rarest, most beautiful and superbly adapted species of our wildlife heritage to the brink of extinction, although they consitutue a resource that could …

How Important Are Livestock Management Methods To The Orevention And /Or Reduction Of Losses To Coyotes, Don Good Jan 1973

How Important Are Livestock Management Methods To The Orevention And /Or Reduction Of Losses To Coyotes, Don Good

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Professor.E. K. Faulkner, Extension Sheep Specialist from the University of Wyoming, stated that fencing the range was too expensive to be practical. He indicated that flares, pop-guns, color painting on sheep, and dogs have been used to cut down losses to coyotes but these methods have not been nearly so effective as the use of cyanide guns and 1080. He also indicated that losses to coyotes along with labor problems are the number 1 and 2 reasons for 200 sheepmen going out of the business the past 5 years in the range country. He said that shed lambing or lambing …

The Sport Hunting Of Coyotes, Edward L. Kozicky Jan 1973

The Sport Hunting Of Coyotes, Edward L. Kozicky

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

In an effort to gain some insight into the sport hunting of coyotes in Kansas, Bob Henderson circulated 586 detailed questionnaires and received 228 replies--an excellent voluntary response.

Time does not permit detailed comments on each question and reply. We shall only hit the highlights, and add some editorial comment where it seems appropriate.

It should be remembered that those who took the time to answer the 35 questions were devotees of the sport. This point is emphasized by the fact that of the 225 hunters who responded, 95 have been hunting coyotes for 20 years or more. The next …

Sport Hunting As A Method Of Damage Control, L. Boddicker Jan 1973

Sport Hunting As A Method Of Damage Control, L. Boddicker

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Predator damage control is an area of concern to the livestock producer. He is also often the most likely person to choose sport hunting of coyotes as a recreational activity. Sport hunting of problem coyotes can be an effective tool.

Agricultural producers want to know the skills to control depredating wildlife. A high powered rifle, traps, and various related equipment are standard for most livestock production operations.

Through the Extension effort we attempt to help the producer develop wildlife damage control skills. It is also our responsibility to help develop alternatives to aid the livestock producer with persistent wildlife damage …

A Crystalline Fragment Of The Double Helix: The Structure Of The Dinucleoside Phosphate Guanylyl-3',5'-Cytidine, Roberta Ogilvie Day, Nadrian C. Seeman, John M. Rosenberg, Alexander Rich Jan 1973

A Crystalline Fragment Of The Double Helix: The Structure Of The Dinucleoside Phosphate Guanylyl-3',5'-Cytidine, Roberta Ogilvie Day, Nadrian C. Seeman, John M. Rosenberg, Alexander Rich

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

The sodium silt of guanylyl-3',5'-cytidine crystallizes in a monoclinic unit cell with one molecule in the asymmetric unit. Each molecule is related to another molecule by a 2-fold rotation axis which results in the formation of an antiparallel; right-handed .double helix with complementary hydrogen bonding between the guanine and cytosine residues. The crystal is heavily hydrated with 36 water molecules in the unit cell. The geometry of this crystalline double helix is. very similar to those which have been derived from studies of fiber x-ray diffraction patterns of double-stranded RNA; even though the latter do not yield data at atomic …

Hydrogeology Of A Sanitary Landfill, Mandan, North Dakota, Raymond D. Butler

Theses and Dissertations

The data from this study can be applied to much of southwestern North Dakota because the geologic and climatic conditions are similar.

The Mandan landfill is on the Heart River floodplain and next to the river on the north and steep valley wall on the south. The sanitary landfill bas been used for over 20 years.

The only pre-Pleistocene unit exposed is the Cannonball Formation, which is interbedded sand, silt, and clay. Quaternary units consist of till, fluvial sand, silt, clay, and gravel, and eolian sand and silt.

A local flow system recharges on the upland next to the valley …

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz Jan 1973

Compatibility And Stability Of 8% Amino Acids Solution In Combination With Electrolytes, Vitamins And Antibiotics, David Harold Schuetz

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For centuries, researchers have attempted to devise the ideal parenteral nutritional product readily amenable to physiological requirements. Hyperalimentation, intravenous alimentation, parenteral alimentation, parenteral feeding, and total parenteral nutrition are synonyms which refer to a method of complete intravenous nutrition reserved for patients demonstrating negative nitrogen balance.

The nutrient solution appeared to accommodate levels of potassium phosphate, calcium gluconate, and magnesium sulfate well in excess of “usual” therapeutic concentrations. Similarly, commonly employed vitamin supplements and insulin were examined in combination with the hyperalimentation solution and failed to demonstrate signs of physical incompatibility. However, instrumental analysis, i.e., U.V. spectroscopy and thin-layer chromatography, …

Polarographic Trace Analysis Of Copper, Lead And Cadmium, Donald Paul Jepson Jan 1973

Polarographic Trace Analysis Of Copper, Lead And Cadmium, Donald Paul Jepson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The area of study for this project was the development of an accurate, reliable, and inexpensive method of trace analysis for copper, cadmium, and lead in foods. AT this time, the Association of Official Analytical Chemists Manual, eleventh edition, (4) has only official and recognized methods of analysis for copper (25.023), cadmium (25.018), and lead (25.041). In general, these procedures are long and tedious. The digestions involved often require many hours and are quite dangerous due to leakage of metallic and organometallic fumes from the digestion apparatus. The official methods of analysis for these elements require a very large outlay …

Some Aspects Of Mercury Accumulation By The Purple Shore Crab Hemigrapsus Nudus Dana (Crustacea: Decapoda), Ralph Gene Swanson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The present study has attempted to investigate some of the more basic questions concerning the toxicity and accumulation of mercury in the purple shore crab, Hemigrapsus nudus. This rocky intertidal denizen is found in abundance along the entire Pacific coast of the United States from Sitka, Alaska, to the Gulf of California where it dominates the mid-tide pool region. Local specimens were collected just north of the Pacific Marine Stations, Dillon Beach, Marin County, California. The animal is hearty and can be kept in a state of good health for long periods of time in the laboratory with minimum care …

Scavenging Of Atmospheric Particles By Water Drops, Ming-Shian Wu Jan 1973

Scavenging Of Atmospheric Particles By Water Drops, Ming-Shian Wu

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the first paper, the mechanisms of particle capture and coalescence of aerosols by a moving water drop in the atmosphere are studied using the boundary-layer flow approximation. The particle trajectory is computed by solving the equations of motion of the particle both outside and inside the boundary layer using the Adams-Moulton method. The grazing trajectory is found by a trial-and-error technique. The collision and collection efficiencies of scavenging due to particle inertia and to the velocity gradient of the flow field are then computed for water drops ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mm in radius and for particle of …

Temperature Preference Responses Of Some Aquatic, Cave-Adapted Crustaceans From Central Texas And Northeastern México, William R. Elliott, Robert W. Mitchell Jan 1973

Temperature Preference Responses Of Some Aquatic, Cave-Adapted Crustaceans From Central Texas And Northeastern México, William R. Elliott, Robert W. Mitchell

International Journal of Speleology

The temperature preference responses of five species of troglobite crustaceans were studied in a 15°-30°C gradient. Stygonectes hadenoecus, S. russelli and Asellus reddelli had no discernible temperature preferenda. Speocirolana bolivari had a weak preference for 20-30°C. Cirolanides texensis had a pronounced preference for 20-30°C, temperatures much warmer than that of its habitat. The lack of temperature preferenda in three species agrees with the hypothesis that imprisoned troglobites tend to lose responses to those environmental variables which are constant in caves. S. bolivari may retain its temperature selectivity because of a slow rate of cave-adaptation. It is hypothised that C. …

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona Jan 1973

Fluorescent Dye Determination Of Groundwater Movement And Contamination In Permeable Rock Strata, Charles P. Giammona

International Journal of Speleology

A preliminary inquiry to the extent and boundaries of subterranean waterways within the Mystery Cave System was explored. Rhodamine WT dye in 500 ml quantities was used in fluormetry determinations of surface flow to ground water basins. A Turner Model 111 fluorometer was utilized for detection purposes powered by a portable 12 volt, 220 amp hour battery-inverter system. It was shown that water entered underground passageways through sinkholes or highly creviced limestone/dolomite rock strata and reappeared several kilometres downstream. The outflow appears in the form of “springs”. The possibility exists that contaminated surface water may seep through the soil for …

The Atomic Absorption Determination Of Ultra-Trace Tellurium In Rocks Utilizing High Sensitivity Sampling Systems, Richard D. Beaty Jan 1973

The Atomic Absorption Determination Of Ultra-Trace Tellurium In Rocks Utilizing High Sensitivity Sampling Systems, Richard D. Beaty

Doctoral Dissertations

"The sampling boat and the graphite furnace have been shown to possess the required sensitivity to detect tellurium at ultra-trace levels, in a variety of sample types, by atomic absorption. In the sampling boat approach, tellurium in sample solutions is chemically separated and concentrated by extraction into methyl isobutyl ketone before measurement. For samples exhibiting extraction interferences or excessively high background absorption, a preliminary separation of tellurium by coprecipitation with selenium is described. Using this technique, tellurium can be quantitatively detected down to 5 nanograms and linear response is observed to 100 nanograms. Relative standard deviations of better than 7% …

Irradiation Equivalence, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Homayoonfar Nov 1972

Irradiation Equivalence, Robert Katz, S. C. Sharma, M. Homayoonfar

Robert Katz Publications

Recent analyses of track structure show that the parameters describing a radiation field are not separable from those describing a detecting system; that is, it is impossible to write an expression describing the effect of irradiation as a product of 2 factors, one of which contains only parameters describing the detecting system, while the other contains parameters describing only the radiation field. From this perspective it is difficult to understand the use of a “quality factor,” applicable to all biological substances and given as a function of the “effective LET,” for the conversion of rads to rems. One cannot define, …

Phytoplankton Successions And Lake Dynamics In Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada, Ervon R. Koening, Richard W. Tew, James E. Deacon Oct 1972

Phytoplankton Successions And Lake Dynamics In Las Vegas Bay, Lake Mead, Nevada, Ervon R. Koening, Richard W. Tew, James E. Deacon

Publications (WR)

Phytoplankton successions, applications of the general growth equation, and physical measurements have been employed to investigate events occurring at the interface between industrial and sewage effluent contained in Las Vegas Wash and the waters of Lake Mead, Nevada. The data indicate that the entering waters tend to form a density current interrupted at intervals by dynamic effects generated in the lake. The dynamic relationships described here for the spring months suggest that a much more thorough understanding of physical, chemical and biological interactions is necessary to permit solution of the numerous problems of Las Vegas Bay discussed or alluded to …

Health Status Of Emergency Department Patients, Marjean J. Horning Sep 1972

Health Status Of Emergency Department Patients, Marjean J. Horning

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to help nursing develop a comprehensive care system for patients in selected emergency departments. To develop such a system, it was necessary to know the characteristics of and the health needs of that population.

The problem of this study was to describe the characteristics and health needs of patients in selected emergency departments.

Patients were interviewed using the Kisch Health Status Proxy (KHSP) and the Health Habits Inventory (HHI) as a guide. The KHSP listed acute and chronic conditions that an individual experienced. It gave a numerical score which rated the respondent in good, …
