Final Report: Lake Mead Monitoring Program, James E. Deacon
Publications (WR)
The Lake Mead Monitoring Program has continued to develop information on the limnological condition of Lake Mead. We have significantly increased our analytical capabilities this year by developing a cooperative project with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and continuing our cooperative program with E.P.A. We also were able to derive significant benefit from the reviews of the Pollution Abatement Project written by Clair Sawyer and Charles Goldman. Partially as a result of these reviews we have had the opportunity to interpret and more fully explain the significance of our work to a wider public audience than would otherwise have been …

Beef Cattle Feedlot Runoff And Control In Eastern Nebraska, L. P. Schram, Lynn R. Shuyler
United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications
This study was initiated to determine operational characteristics of runoff control facility components for beef cattle feedlots.
A runoff control facility was designed and constructed for a 3,000 head capacity feedlot in eastern Nebraska. Components of the runoff control facility included debris basins inside the pen and outside the pen, a holding pond, and a disposal system.
Results indicated that design volumes for the debris basins and holding ponds were effective in controlling runoff from the lots caused by snowmelt and rainfall for climatic conditions within eastern Nebraska. Characteristics of runoff transported solids from this large lot compared favorably with …

The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay
The Synthesis Of Novel Macrocyclic Multidentate Compounds From Dioxodioic Acids (1), R. Elliott Asay
Theses and Dissertations
A series of novel macrocyclic multidentate crown compounds have been prepared from a series of dioxodioic acids. The dioxodioic acids were prepared by treating various oligoethylene glycols or amines with maleic, succinic, citraconic, and glutaric anhydrides. The crown compounds were then synthesized from the dioxodioic acid chlorides obtained from the diacids and various oligoethylene glycols or ethylene diamine.

Relationship Between Some Demographic Characteristics And Adverse Reactions Experienced By Women Undergoing A Therapeutic Abortion While Awake, Karen K. House
Relationship Between Some Demographic Characteristics And Adverse Reactions Experienced By Women Undergoing A Therapeutic Abortion While Awake, Karen K. House
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
With the liberalization of abortion laws by the Supreme Court in 1973, American women have been able to obtain therapeutic abortions in hospitals and out-patient clinics in ever increasing numbers. With the increased number of women seeking abortions the medical field has responded with abortion procedures that are safe and relatively quick. With the speed doctors use to perform the procedure, many women may wish to take advantage of the medically safer method of abortion under local anesthesia. However, some women are unable to withstand the psychological and physical stress associated with a therapeutic abortion while awake. It would be …
Community Health Nurse Influence On Retiree Health Planning, Patricia Hora
Community Health Nurse Influence On Retiree Health Planning, Patricia Hora
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The number and percent of the population over the age of 60 in the United States is increasing. The majority of these people (96%) are functioning in their own homes (Shanas, 1965). Physical health is important to the enjoyment and utilization of the added years of life. Therefore it seems important to find ways to meet the older citizen before the time of illness and help him/her to develop health goals and plans that will facilitate an optimal level of functioning and improve the quality of life.
The purpose of this study was to describe a method of intervening at …

A Proposal For Renewable Resource Management In Long Island Sound, Oliver T. Edstrom
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
In the United States, prior to Public Law 94-265, the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976, regulation of the harvest of oceanic fishery stocks was complicated by the principles of common property resource laws founded by Grotius' dissertation on freedom of the seas. Public Law 94-265 vests ownership in the right to manage stock of fish within 200 miles of the United States' coast to the United States as trustee of that fishery resource. Within the framework of extended jurisdiction of fishery management, individual states in the republic keep and maintain control of fishery resources. within their respective territories.

An Epornitic Of Avian Cholera In Waterfowl And Common Crows In Phelps County, Nebraska, In The Spring, 1975, Joseph Zinkl, Norm Dey, Joseph Hyland, James Hurt, Kenneth Heddleston
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications
In the spring of 1975, many species of waterfowl and common crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) were found dead in Phelps County, Nebraska. About 25,000 waterfowl and at least 3,000 crows died in the epornitic. Few waterfowl were seen dying, but the crows experienced a chronic illness during which they became debilitated and were lethargic and dyspneic. Gross and microscopic lesions in the waterfowl were typical for acute avian cholera. The crows had dank, firm areas within the lungs, a loosely adhered yellow fibrous material in the pericardial sac and air sacs and, occasionally, liver abscesses. Microscopically, focal punulent pneumonia …

Suspended And Dissolved Solids Effects On Freshwater Biota: A Review, Darwin L. Sorensen, Margaret M. Mccarthy, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella
Reports
It is widely recognized that suspended and dissolved solids in lakes, rivers, streams, and reservoirs affect water quality. In this report the research needs appropriate to setting freshwater quality criteria or standards for suspeneded solids (not including bedload) and dissolveed solids are defined by determining the state of our knowledge from a critical review of the recent literature in this field. Common literature sources and computer searching routines were used as an initial source of information followed by detailed journal searches. Although some 185 journal articles, government reports, and other referecnes were cited herein (about 45 percent publicshed since 1974) …
Isolation, Purification, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Bacterial Dna Uptake Of Plant Protoplasts, Bronwyn G. Hughes
Isolation, Purification, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Bacterial Dna Uptake Of Plant Protoplasts, Bronwyn G. Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
Protoplasts were isolated from tobacco and barley leaves in sucrose or mannitol using commercially available cellulases and macerozymes. Barley growth and protoplast isolation and purification conditions were optimized so that protoplasts were obtained in high yields free of unwanted debris and organelles. A technique for processing barley and tobacco protoplasts for examination by scanning electron microscopy was developed in which protoplasts seem to have maintained their structural integrity. Barley and tobacco protoplasts took up 3H-B. subtilis DNA, 125I-B. subtilis DNA or 125I-M. luteus DNA as a linear function of time (0-6 hr) and DNA concentration (0-200 μg/ml). Up to 16 …

Comments On The Pine Vole In Orchards And Its Control, J. G. Barrat
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
There are many present orchard problems, most of them seasonal in nature, but few cause the serious losses that extensive vole injury does. Voles do their damage by feeding on the bark of the roots and at the crown of the trunk causing partial or complete girdling which weakens or kills the tree. Vole damage is feared because it means the loss of a tree or a group of trees as a maximum producing unit which takes several years to replace. Partially girdled trees may survive for years with low production. The lack of mouse control is often blamed on …

The Basis Of College Recommendations On Orchard Mouse Control In New York, James W. Caslick
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
We all depend heavily upon the advice of others, in making our day-to- day decisions. Months, and perhaps years, before the first ounce of a new rodenticide is used by an orchardist, a series of successful "convincings" must occur. A market analyst must convince his company that a new rodenticide is needed and that a suitable market exists. The company's researchers must convince management that their candidate rodenticide has potential worth exploring. Perhaps researchers outside the company then convince management that outside research services would be beneficial. Researchers must then convince regulatory agencies that the new rodenticide is effective against …

My View Of Our Pine Vole Control Problem, Steve Clark
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
In a recent survey of pine mouse infestation, it was determined that approximately 37% of the orchard land had serious enough damage to warrant control measures. Some growers are using chlorophacinone as a ground spray. We are also putting out tarpaper bait stations and baiting with either Ramik Brown or Rozol pellets. There has been mixed results with both methods and our growers are still looking for a better control method.

A number of anticoagulant baits were found to be effective for the control of pine voles in apple orchards. The more toxic and acute the anticoagulant bait, the more effective the compounds appeared to be in field trials. A single 10 lb/A application of ICI 581, LM 637, and CPN gave excellent control in 1976 trials. Apple baits of ICI 581 and RH 787 also performed very well as a single 10 lb or 5 lb application per acre, respectively. Endrin applied to an orchard with a history of 10 years or more of annual applications did not control the …

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
The object of this study was to provide an estimate of the financial losses caused in Michigan's apple orchards by members of the genus Miarotus, and, if possible, to discover some of the factors affecting the amount of damage. Information was collected from apple growers and from direct observation of 1,520 Michigan apple trees. Data was collected concerning the winters of 1972-73 and 1973-74. Both of these years were characterized hy relatively low populations of microtine rodents in Michigan.

Economic Implications Of Using Zinc Phosphide To Replace Endrin In Apple Orchards, Walter L. Ferguson
Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia
Consideration is being given to suspend or restrict the use of endrin for controlling mice in orchards. If endrin were not available for this use, State extension and experiment station personnel in 6 Eastern States and 2 Western States estimated that apple production losses would increase from mice injury on 33,400 endrin-treated bearing acres, (12,500 acres in the Eastern States and 20,900 acres in the Western States). The 6 Eastern States include Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia: the 2 Western States are Idaho and Washington. Estimates of production changes without endrin were made assuming zinc …
