Effects Of Organic Compounds On Amphibian Reproduction, Wesley J. Birge, Jeffrey A. Black, Robert A. Kuehne Jan 1980

Effects Of Organic Compounds On Amphibian Reproduction, Wesley J. Birge, Jeffrey A. Black, Robert A. Kuehne

KWRRI Research Reports

Aquatic toxicity tests were conducted with atrazine, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, methylene chloride, trisodium nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and phenol. Each compound was administered to developmental stages of three to five amphibian species. Exposure was initiated at fertilization and maintained through 4 days posthatching. Test responses included lethality and teratogenesis. Different amphibian species exhibited varying degrees of tolerance to the selected compounds. Greatest tolerance usually was observed for the more broadly adapted semi-aquatic and terrestrial species (e.g., Bufo americanus, Bufo fowleri). The more sensitive amphibians usually included those species which normally are restricted to aquatic or moist habitats (e.g., Rana …

High-Carbonate And Low-Silica Stone In The High Bridge Group (Middle Ordovician), Fayette County, Central Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr. Jan 1980

High-Carbonate And Low-Silica Stone In The High Bridge Group (Middle Ordovician), Fayette County, Central Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr.

Information Circular--KGS

The High Bridge Group (Middle Ordovician) of central Kentucky, a major source of limestone and dolomite for construction and agricultural stone, is also a potential source of stone for industrial uses requiring carbonate rocks of high chemical purity. Chemical analyses of foot-by-foot samples from a Fayette County core show that several thick zones of high-carbonate and low-silica stone are present in the High Bridge at a minable depth.

The Removal Of Viruses From Water By Conventional Water-Treatment Practices, Janet S. Ziegle Jan 1980

The Removal Of Viruses From Water By Conventional Water-Treatment Practices, Janet S. Ziegle

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of conventional water-treatment methods in removing viruses from raw water sources. Those processes studied included alum flocculation, rapid sand filtration of fleeced and unflocced water samples, and chlorine disinfection.

This study was approached using coliphage f2 as a seeded indicator of treatment efficiency. Coliphage f2 was chosen as an indicator because of its similarities to enteric viral pathogens in both morphology and sensitivity to water-treatment processes. Coliphage f2 was found to occur naturally in surface waters, but not in numbers sufficient to interfere with calculations.

Kaolinitic Weathering Zone On Precambrian Basement Rocks, Red River Valley, Eastern North Dakota And Northwestern Minnesota, Lynne Irvine Kelley Jan 1980

Kaolinitic Weathering Zone On Precambrian Basement Rocks, Red River Valley, Eastern North Dakota And Northwestern Minnesota, Lynne Irvine Kelley

Theses and Dissertations

A suite of 26 drill cores recovered from the Red River Valley Drilling Project has provided new information on the Precambrian basement of eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota. Basement rocks in this area consist of intermediate to felsic coarse-grained massive or gneissic rocks, and intermediate to mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary schists. The Precambrian rocks of the region are interpreted to be a buried extension of the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield, and are divided into terranes of granitic rock and mafic schist, on the basis of drill-hole samples, patterns seen in Superior Province rocks which crop out to …

Food Habits And Growth Of Rainbow Trout In A Prairie Pond, Ronald Marvin Koth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) were introduced into Lower Abbey Pond, South Dakota, at a stocking rate of 772/ha in June 1977. Sampling was begun in January 1978 to determine food habits and growth of the fish. Trout and environmental samples were taken at 10 day or monthly intervals depending upon the season. A linear index of food selection was calculated and growth data was analyzed using the SHAD computer program. Food habits were determined for 159 rainbow trout collected from January 1978 to October 1978. Stomachs contained a total of 5,700 food organisms with major constituents by number being notonectids …

Federal Protection Of Unique Environmental Interests: Endangered And Threatened Species, Ronald H. Rosenberg Jan 1980

Federal Protection Of Unique Environmental Interests: Endangered And Threatened Species, Ronald H. Rosenberg

Faculty Publications

Endangered species protection has long been favored by many Americans, who watched regretfully as the numbers of American eagles, buffaloes and other species dwindled toward extinction. Only recently, however, has species protection become a matter of public controversy, subsumed in the more general "development v. environment" debate. In this Article, Professor Rosenberg surveys the federal government's role in species protection, with a special focus on the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Prompted by the much-publicized Supreme Court decision in the "snail darter case"--TVA v. Hill-Congress extensively amended the Act in 1978. After a detailed analysis of these amendments, Professor Rosenberg …

Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney Jan 1980

Evaluation Of Livestock Runoff As A Source Of Water Pollution In Northern Utah, Stephen T. Wieneke, Dennis B. George, Daniel S. Filip, Brad Finney

Reports

A mathematical model was developed to predict the impact of dairy and beef cattle feedlot runoff on receiving streams. The mathematical expressions used in the model describing runoff quantity and quality were not only a function of single rain or snow precipitation events but also consecutive events prior to the runoff occurrence. The runoff quantity and quality were also a function of feedlot surface. Computer simualtions indicate that pollutants from feedlot runoff may have a significant impact on receiving streams during winter months. Runoff from feedlots located within the study area, however, had little impact on water quality in the …

The 60,000 people, who live in these counties according to the 1975 census, are largely …

Management Of Rural Domestic Water Systems In Utah, Trevor C. Hughes Jan 1980

Management Of Rural Domestic Water Systems In Utah, Trevor C. Hughes

Reports

Introduction: There are now more than 400 community type public drinking water systems in Utah. Considerable state and federal assistance is available for construction or renovation of such systems, but once the system is constructed and the consulting engineer leaves, the managers of the smaller systems find themselves quite isolated from sources of professional assistance. The larger systems have a revenue base which can provide ongoing services of a consultant or salaried engineer and well trained operators. The smaller systems, particularly low density rural systems where the length of pipeline per user is very high, usually find themselves barely able …

Management Of The Hydrologic System In Areas Subject To Coal Mining Activities, Rollin H. Hotchkiss, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley Jan 1980

Management Of The Hydrologic System In Areas Subject To Coal Mining Activities, Rollin H. Hotchkiss, Eugene K. Israelsen, J. Paul Riley

Reports

Publicity given to the detrimental effects of mining activities on the environment has tended to overshadow somewhat the hydrologic opportunities and benfits that could be associated with these activities. For example, many areas disturbed by surface mining have proved to be excellent recharge areas for groundwater aquifers. The degree to which mine sites can be exploited to improve management of the hydrologic system depends on both the local geology and the mining techniques used. The report examines the effects of present mining activities on the associated hydrology system, and identifies specific mining procedures and management techniques which not only minimize …

Water Demand At Recreation Developments, Simon Lam, Trevor C. Hughes Jan 1980

Water Demand At Recreation Developments, Simon Lam, Trevor C. Hughes

Reports

Design criteria for drinking water systems at recreation developments, particularly summer home type, cause frequent confrontations with regulatory agencies. Developers claim extremely low water use rates due to low occupancy rates, but regulatory agencies are concerned about changes over time from essentially weekend use to more permanent residency and also about occasional peak day water demands similar to those of municipal systems. Little empirical data have been available to resolve such questions. This study included the gathering and analysis of both historic water use measurements and additional daily and instantaneous measurements during peak seasons at 11 Utah and one Wyoming …

Data Summary: The potential hazards of the surface impoundments assessed to groundwater is based on two values established during the assessment procedure. These values are identified as the pollution …

Feasibility Study Of Establishing A Water Rights Banking/Brokering Service In Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Kirk R. Kimball, Lee Kapaloski Jan 1980

Feasibility Study Of Establishing A Water Rights Banking/Brokering Service In Utah, Jay M. Bagley, Kirk R. Kimball, Lee Kapaloski

Reports

Changes in water use patterns are an inevitable consequence of relentless social transformations taking place. Especially where waters have been fully appropriated, the needs of a dynamic society must be met through transfers in water ownership. Yet, there are a variety of factors that may operate as impediments to the shifting of water according to social preferences as expressed through water markets. As a mechanism for facilitating water transfers, exchagnes, or rentals, the concept of "water banking" and "water brokering" may be fruitful. This repot appraises the potential for initiating and operating such a service within the legal, institutional, and …

Effect Of Phenoxy Acids And Their Derivatives On The Ionic Permeability Of Bilayer Lipid Membranes, Malkanthi Paulis Illangasekare Dec 1979

Effect Of Phenoxy Acids And Their Derivatives On The Ionic Permeability Of Bilayer Lipid Membranes, Malkanthi Paulis Illangasekare

Dissertations and Theses

It has been found that the herbicide 2,4-D has the ability to increase the rate of transport of positive ions of several kinds and inhibit the transport of negatively charged tetraphenylborate ions in lipid bilayer membranes. Only the neutral molecules of 2,4-D are transport active. The ionized 2,4-D molecules do not modify the transport of ions, and do not by themselves permeate through lipid membranes. The results suggest that the enhancement of transport of positively charged ions is dominated by the increase of the ion translocation rate constant. It has been shown that membrane transport of negatively charged tetraphenylborate ions …

Program Planning For Extension Wildlife Damage Control: Rodents, Edward K. Boggess Dec 1979

Program Planning For Extension Wildlife Damage Control: Rodents, Edward K. Boggess

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Program planning is a necessary part of any educational program which is intended to progress in an orderly or logical manner. However, it must be realized that extension wildlife specialists often must deal with special sets of circumstances when it comes to resolving problems with wildlife. When faced with a particular damage problem, the wildlife specialist has two options: to act or to react. The choice of which course to take depends on the specific problem and on a number of related factors, such as uniqueness and severity of the problem and community attitudes.

Update Of Federally Registered Vertebrate Pesticides, Raymond W. Matheny Dec 1979

Update Of Federally Registered Vertebrate Pesticides, Raymond W. Matheny

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

The Environmental Protection Agency is charged by Congress under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) to regulate the use of pesticides in the United States. Section 3 of FIFRA requires that all interstate pesticides be federally registered. In this process applicants must submit data to support registration of their products. These data encompass the safety, basic chemistry, environmental chemistry, human toxicity and fish and wildlife toxicity of the product. Admittedly, registration of pesticides can be both costly and time-consuming. The objective is to protect the environment, both plant and animal, from adverse effects. Pesticides may also be used, experimentally …

Extension Program Planning For Predator Damage Control, Dale A. Wade Dec 1979

Extension Program Planning For Predator Damage Control, Dale A. Wade

Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings

Program planning for reduction of predator damage through the Extension approach normally involves producers, the county Extension agent and the Extension specialist in animal damage control. Please note that I will use the term "animal damage" rather than "wildlife damage", since free-ranging and feral dogs are frequently responsible for predator-caused losses and reducing these losses is equally as important as limiting losses to wild species.
