Effects Of Cadmium On Streams And Irrigated Agriculture In The Presence And Absence Of Oil Shale Leachate, Douglas A. Selby, Jean M. Ihnat, Fredrick J. Post, Jay J. Messer Jan 1983

Effects Of Cadmium On Streams And Irrigated Agriculture In The Presence And Absence Of Oil Shale Leachate, Douglas A. Selby, Jean M. Ihnat, Fredrick J. Post, Jay J. Messer

Reports

Artificial streams, soil perfusion columns, and potted plants were exposed to 20 ug Cd/l in the presence and absence of unretorted oil shale leachate. High cadmium accumulations occurred in the stream biota, but did not measurably affect community structure or function. The presence of oil shale leachate had no effect on bioaccumulation or ecosystem structure or function. Nitrification in soil columns was enhanced by the presence of the organic fraction of oil shale leachate, but this effect was not observed when cadmium was present. Crop accumulation of cadmium was somewhat higher in alfalfa and radishes irrigated with leachate, but did …

Reports

Comprehensive planning is an elusive ideal. The practical planner must sort the relevant information from the vast amounts of data that modern technology can collect. The objective of this study was to use the Upper Blackfoot watershed in the mountains of Southeastern Idaho as an arena for developing methods for construction, refinement, and application of indices needed to design land and water management schemes, compare alternatives, and influence the public in their uses of the area. A total of 21 uses were examined on 242 land units of a 160 square-mile area ranging in elevation from 6300 to 9000 feet …

Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Some Utah Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat Jan 1983

Reconnaissance Of Sediment-Phosphorus Relationships In Some Utah Reservoirs, Jay J. Messer, Jean M. Ihnat

Reports

Introduction: Phosphorus inputs to lakes and reservoirs from tributary streams and non-point sources are well-known contributors to nuisance algal growths that degrade water quality for potable and recreational uses in lakes and reservoirs. However, phosphours inputs to the euphotic zone may also occur from within the lake itself, as a result of releases from both oxic and anoxid sediments. Such releases may originate from phosphorus inputs to a lake or reservoir during high runoff periods in the previous winder or spring, or they may represent phosphorus trapped in the sediment many years earlier, when phosphorus contributions from natural or anthropogenic …

Adapting Water Services To Urban Growth: A Case Study Of Salt Lake County, Dean T. Larson, Kirk R. Kimball, Calvin W. Hiibner, Jay M. Bagley

Reports

Urbanizing areas thorughout the nation are considering governmental reorganization or consolidation to coordinate planning and improve the cost effectiveness of the delivery of public services. More efficient water supply and wastewater services may become important in the political debate over reorganization. However water factors figure politically, accomplished reorganizations must carefully plan for efficent provision of water services. This study profiles the structure and interactions of municipalities and water service agencies in Utah's Salt Lake County during the 1970s. Both 1975 and 1978 attempts to consolidate Salt Lake City and the unincorporated areas of the county failed. The voting patterns, interest …

Adapting Appropriation Water Law To Accommodate Equitable Consideration Of Instream Flow Uses, Jay M. Bagley, Dean T. Larson, Lee Kapaloski

Reports

The increasing public interest in naturally flowing streams has fostered efforts to obtain their protection under existing state water laws. In this study, the water laws of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming were examined and compared 1) with each other, and 2) against a set of aleitn criteria, to assess shortcomings in accommodating instream flow protections. It was determined that the appropriation system has the essential features of and ambodies legal principles that should allow the accommodation of instream flow values but, at this time, purchase of existing rights or the exercise of governmental reservation/withdrawal/appropriation …

Impediments To Effective Interactions Between Multipurpose Water Districts And Other Governmental Institutions In Urbanizing Areas, Jay M. Bagley, Frank W. Haws, Wendell B. Anderson, Daniel H. Hoggan, Lee Kapaloski

Reports

Water institutions are highly diffused throughout society. These institutions interact with one another in various ways. As water needs and services expand, collaborative and cooperative arrangements are commonly sought as a means of meeting common goals of providing a safe, dependable adn least cost water supply to particular constituencies. Of the many different institutions involved in the development, managment, distribution, and use of water, perhaps the most significant in terms of extensive interactions with other institutions is the kind that is typified by Water Conservancy Districts and Metropolitan Water Districts in Utah. The statutory and operating framework of counterpart organizations …

The Effect Of Fetal Age On Skin Permeability In Guinea Pigs, Benita Stiles Whitted Dec 1982

The Effect Of Fetal Age On Skin Permeability In Guinea Pigs, Benita Stiles Whitted

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Preliminary investigation has indicated large decreases in fetal skin permeability during the latter half of gestation (Parmley and Seeds, 1970; Treager, 1966). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the degree of skin permeability in fetal guinea pigs at various gestational stages. The test hypothesis was that these skins would show a significant decrease in permeability to tritiated water when tested at time increments through out the latter half of gestation.

In vitro skin permeability to tritiated water was measured in samples from 22 guinea pig fetuses. Gestational age ranged from 30 to 65 days in increments of five, …

Spermidine-Condensed Phi X174 Dna Cleavage By Micrococcal Nuclease: Torus Cleavage Model And Evidence For Unidirectional Circumferential Dna Wrapping., Kenneth A. Marx, Thomas C. Reynolds Nov 1982

Spermidine-Condensed Phi X174 Dna Cleavage By Micrococcal Nuclease: Torus Cleavage Model And Evidence For Unidirectional Circumferential Dna Wrapping., Kenneth A. Marx, Thomas C. Reynolds

Dartmouth Scholarship

Spermidine-condensed phi X174 replicative form (RF) II DNA was digested with micrococcal nuclease to yield seven identifiable DNA bands forming an arithmetic fragment-length series. The DNA monomer unit length was found to be 780 +/- 80 base pairs. This result is most consistent with a proposed model for micrococcal nuclease cleavage of a DNA torus organized by the unidirectional, circumferential wrapping of B-geometry DNA. By a topological consideration, the blunt-end-rod-fusion model for torus formation [Eickbush, T. H. & Moudrianakis, E. N. (1978) Cell 13, 295-306] is shown to be inconsistent with our empirical solution results. We propose a continuous, circumferential …

Soil Ph: What It Is, How It Is Measured, Why It Is Important, John H. Grove Oct 1982

Soil Ph: What It Is, How It Is Measured, Why It Is Important, John H. Grove

Soil Science News and Views

Soil pH is related to the hydrogen ion (H+) activity of the soil-water system. The chemical definition of pH is as follows: pH=-log (H+). In other words, for a pH drop of 1 unit (e. g. from pH 6 to pH 5) there will be a ten~fold increase in H+ activity in the soil solution. If pH 1 rises by 1 unit, only one-tenth as much acidity will be present in solution. As such, pH is only a measure of the active acidity in the soil water solution bathing plant roots. This fraction of total …

Morphological Variation Of The Foraminifer Elphidium Excavatum (Terquem) On Crumps Bank And Willoughby Bank, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Pamela Kay Painter

OES Theses and Dissertations

Six variants of the highly variable foraminiferal species, Elphidium excavatum (Terquem) were recognized in the Crumps Bank and Willoughby Bank areas of the southern Chesapeake Bay. Measurements of the size of the test, the number of chambers, the number of umbilical bosses, and the number and average length of the sutural bridges on the last formed chamber, and opaqueness or translucence of the test were made on 30 specimens from each of 36 stations selected for differences in environmental parameters. The measurements were statistically analyzed by discriminant analysis to test the hypothesis that the variants are distinct morphotypes and to …

The Effects Of Dredged Material (Suspended Solid Phase) On The Hatching Success Of Spot Eggs (Leiostomus Xanturus), Meryl A. Masters

OES Theses and Dissertations

A 24-hour static bioassay was performed with the suspended solid phase of bottom sediment from a highly industrialized river utilizing eggs of the spot, Leiostomus xanthurus. Hatching success was measured at four concentrations of elutriates prepared from sediment obtained from the confluence of the eastern and southern branches of the Elizabeth River adjacent to the Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock in Norfolk, Virginia. Test results indicated no significant effect on hatching success at any of the four test concentrations.

Seafarers And International Shipping Standards, Richard David Poisson Aug 1982

Seafarers And International Shipping Standards, Richard David Poisson

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Merchant seafaring, as the subject of modern research and study, is a profession that has not received an undue amount of attention or attraction. The modern seafarer thus remains a 20th century enigma. Of particular concern here will be the international standards of employment, particularly as they are implemented under circumstances of open-registry shipping where their enforcement is commonly called into question. Thus this study will present some of the debate surrounding the issue of conditions of employment aboard open-registry ships, indicating to what extent, if any, seafarers are adversely affected. This study is further intended to indicate the degree …

The Effect Of Self-Help Support Groups On Self Esteem And Blood Glucose In Young Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Linda L. Woertz Aug 1982

The Effect Of Self-Help Support Groups On Self Esteem And Blood Glucose In Young Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Linda L. Woertz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Successful adaptation to diabetes is probably a function of many factors: the stress involved, the rewards, the motivation of the individual, and the self concept. The more optimal the self concept the more optimal the behavior may be. By helping the patient shape a positive self concept, a base can be built for blood glucose control (Bruhn, 1977, pp. 93-97). One method of improving self concept or self esteem may be through the development of self-help support groups for diabetics.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of self-help support group intervention on the levels of self …

Analysis Of Organic N-Chloramines In Chlorinated Drinking Water, John Po Wen Yang Jul 1982

Analysis Of Organic N-Chloramines In Chlorinated Drinking Water, John Po Wen Yang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

This thesis describes the development of a sensitive method for the separation and quantitation of organic N-chloramines in chlorinated tap water. 5-Dimethylaminonaphthalene- l-sulfinic acid has been synthesized and characterized. It yields highly fluorescent dansyl derivatives on reaction with N-chloramines. Conditions of the derivatization were optimized for the detection of N-chloropiperidine at concentrations in aqueous solution of 10-7 M. The technique gives a quantity of derivative which is proportional to the concentration of chloramine present over the range examined (10-7 M to 10-4 M). High pressure liquid chromatographic separation of dansyl derivatives of amines and amino acids has …

Water-Soluble Material On Aerosols Collected Within Volcanic Eruption Clouds, David B. Smith, Robert A. Zielinski, William I. Rose, B. J. Huebert

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

In February and March of 1978, filter samplers mounted on an aircraft were used to collect the aerosol fraction of the eruption clouds from three active Guatemalan volcanoes (Fuego, Pacaya, and Santiaguito). The samples were collected on Teflon (Fluoropore) filters with a nominal pore diameter of 0.5μm. The mass of air sampled by the filters ranged from 0.15 to 6.6 kg. The particulate material collected consisted of fragments of angular silicate ash and droplets of what is interpreted as dilute H2SO4 and HCl. After collection of the samples, each filter was rinsed with 60 ml of distilled-deionized …
