Sixth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference Summary And What Lies Ahead, James E. Miller
Sixth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference Summary And What Lies Ahead, James E. Miller
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
I want to begin by expressing appreciation to Ed Jones, Mike King, Greg Yarrow, Pete Bromley, John Heisterberg, and others on the program committee for hosting and conducting this Sixth Eastern Wildlife Damage Management Conference. I also want to express our appreciation to the exhibitors, the National Animal Damage Control Association, and The Wildlife Society (TWS) for their support. I think those of you who are still here will join me in congratulating these people, organizations, and TWS for helping ensure a successful conference. As one of the people who perceived the need for this conference in the early 1950’s, …

The Microcomputer And Kansas Wildlife Damage Reports, Martin Ottenheimer
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
When F. Robert Henderson, the Extension State Leader of Kansas' Wildlife Damage Control Program, asked me for assistance in setting up a microcomputer system that would enable him to organize and analyze wildlife damage reports, I was surprised. "Certainly," I thought, "it's not because I am a social anthropologist and in my travels around the world I deal with some pretty wild life" No, Bob knew about my work with microcomputers in Anthropology and since we have been friends for some years he also knew that I would talk with him about the problems in using microcomputers. He also knew …
Guardian Dog Research In The U.S., John C. Mcgrew
Guardian Dog Research In The U.S., John C. Mcgrew
Great Plains Wildlife Damage Control Workshop Proceedings
Research on the use and effectiveness of guardian dogs has been conducted since 1977 at 3 locations in the U.S.: the Livestock Dog Project (Amherst, MA), the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station (Dubois, ID), and Colorado State University (Ft. Collins). Their findings are quite consistent: dogs guard sheep and goats directly, i.e., they respond aggressively to predators, chasing them away when necessary, then returning to the flock. This aggressive response toward predators is apparently defense of personal space rather than territorial defense. The development of attentiveness toward sheep, beginning early in life, is probably the most important aspect of training a …

13C Nmr Investigation Of Nonenzymatic Glucosylation Of Protein, Carolyn I. Neglia, Helga J. Cohen, Albert R. Garber, Paul D. Ellis, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Faculty Publications
Nonenzymatic glucosylation of protein is initiated by the reversible condensation of glucose in its open chain form with the amino groups on the protein. The initial product is an aldimine (Schiff base) which cyclizes to the glycosylamine derivative. The aldimine can undergo a slow Amadori rearrangement to yield the relatively stable ketoamine adduct which is structurally analogous to fructose. 13C NMR has been used to characterize these early products of nonenzymatic glucosylation, using RNase A as a model protein. C-1 of the beta-pyranose anomer of the glycosylamine was identified at 88.8 ppm in the spectrum of RNase glucosylated approximately 1:1 …
Plasma Polymerization Of Tetramethyldisiloxane By A Magnetron Glow Discharge, Ashok K. Sharma, H. Yasuda
Plasma Polymerization Of Tetramethyldisiloxane By A Magnetron Glow Discharge, Ashok K. Sharma, H. Yasuda
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Plasma polymerization of tetramethyldisiloxane by a magnetron glow discharge was studied. The glow discharge was created between parallel electrodes with a 10 kHz electric power source with a superimposed magnetic field using permanent bar magnets. Polymers were deposited onto moving substrates placed on the surface of a rotating disc located in between the electrodes. The deposition rates were determined with a quartz crystal thickness monitor placed on the plane of the rotating disc and just outside the edge of the disc. The current-voltage relationship observed for plasma polymerization of the monomer depends on the monomer feed rate and the conditioning …

The Joint Venture Controversy: A Short-Term Solution For A Long-Term Fisheries Policy, Laurie A. Frost
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
This paper will examine the development of joint ventures under the FCMA, the legislative and regulatory measures designed to control these ventures and the procedures for establishing a joint venture. More recent developments in joint venture policy will be examined, including the controversy over squid joint ventures on the East Coast, to determine what the objectives are and what current policy is regarding join ventures. The debate between harvesters and processors will be put forth as a way of summarizing the costs and benefits of joint ventures to the industry as a whole.

A Microsystem Sediment-Water Simulation Study For The Proposed Jordanelle Reservoir, Heber City, Utah, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Reclamation
Water
The technique of microsystem sediment-water simulation was used to predict water quality data for the proposed Jordanelle Reservoir, Heber City, Utah. Simulation microsystems were prepared for four sites located in the north arm of the reservoir basin including two sites located in an abandoned acid mine tailings pond. Data obtained from the tailings pond microsystems indicated that low pH water and high trace metal concentrations will exist in the north arm of the reservoir. These data suggested that some kind of membrane or compacted earth lining will be necessary to seal and contain the mine spoilage. Other sites in the …

Four experimental filter fields were constructed with built-in monitoring equipment in Nixa soils. These soils contain many chert fragments and a fragipan about 60 cm below the soil surface. The fragipan restricts downward movement of water and is the designlimitingfeature. The four filter fields were: 1. A "standard" filter field, 76 cm deep. The bottom of the trench was in the fragipan. 2. A "modified standard" filter field, 30 cm deep. The bottom of the trench was above the fragipan. 3. A "modified pressure" filter field, 40 cm deep. The bottom of the trench was above the fragipan. In addition, …

Using the parallel-plate-capacitor method and a capacitance manometer to determine pressures, total cross sections for the production of positive and negative charges were measured for 5-4000- keV-proton impact on He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Hz, N2, CO, 02, CH4, and C02. From these, ionization and electron-capture cross sections were obtained and fitted to semi-empirical equations describing the energy dependence in terms of a few parameters. At high energies very good agreement is obtained in the comparison of the ionization cross sections to earlier proton- and electron-impact measurements and with theoretical treatments where they …

The Effect Of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons On The Fecundity Of Acartia Tonsa (Calanoid Copepoda), Juanita Y. Grabarczyk
OES Theses and Dissertations
The concentrations of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAHs) were determined for several stations in the Elizabeth River. Thirteen PNAHs of the sixteen EPA priority pollutant PNAHs were present in the particulate fraction. The concentrations ranged from 10.0 ng/1 to 1000 ng/1. Ten of the sixteen EPA priority pollutant PNAH were present in the dissolved phase. Concentrations ranged from 2.0 ng/1 to 100 ng/1.
The environmental PNAHs concentrations were used to determine test concentrations. Bioassays were conducted to determine the effects of indigenous concentrations of seven predominant PNAHs (0.01 mg/1 to 2.4 mg/1 concentrations) on the fecundity of Acartia tonsa (calanoid Copepoda). …

The Effects Of Dredged Materials On The Copeod, Acartia Tonsa, Renee Suzanne Crouch
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A study was conducted to determine the potential impact of open ocean disposal of sediments dredged from a highly industrialized seaport. Sediments from three potential dredge sites along the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River, Hampton Roads, Virginia were evaluated for acute toxicity. The suspended particulate fractions of dredged materials were tested in a series of 96-hour, static bioassays using the calanoid copepod, Acartia tonsa Dana. Significant mortalities were observed for all three sites with the sediments from the most heavily industrialized site producing immediate and severe mortality. Analysis of results indicates that mortality was highly related to the volatile …

Water Requirement For Coal Slurry Transportation, David T. Kao, Sandra L. Rusher
Water Requirement For Coal Slurry Transportation, David T. Kao, Sandra L. Rusher
KWRRI Research Reports
The amount of water required for coal slurry transportation is a function of the coal properties and the magnitude of coal movement. The pipeline system characteristics and the method of slurry preparation also affects the overall water requirement of the system. In the present study methodologies are developed based on reported and modified coal slurry flow correlation equations to determine the quantity of water needed under various coal transport and flow conditions. Auxiliary water requirements including start-up and flushing water storage; related evaporation and seepage losses are also included. A computer program and several monographs are presented to provide a …

Nonenzymatic Glucosylation And Glucose-Dependent Cross-Linking Of Protein, Albert S. Eble, Suzanne R. Thorpe, John W. Baynes
Faculty Publications
A model system using RNase A has been established for studying the nonenzymatic glucosylation and glucose-dependent cross-linking of protein (Maillard reaction) under physiological conditions in vitro. The rate of glucosylation of RNase was first order in glucose. Glucosylation was accompanied by a comparable decrease in primary amino groups in the protein and lysine recoverable by amino acid analysis. Analysis of glucosylation reaction mixtures by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of mercaptoethanol revealed the time-dependent formation of RNase dimer and trimer. The polymerization reaction was mixed order with respect to glucose concentration, but was approximately first order with …

The Binding Of Ribosomal Protein Si To Si-Depleted 30s And 70s Ribosomes. A Fluorescence Anisotropy Study Of The Effects Of Mg2+, Dixie J. Goss, Lawrence J. Parkhurst, Arkesh M. Mehta, Albert J. Wahba
Lawrence Parkhurst Publications
We have determined the equilibrium constants for the binding of AEDANS-labelled Si to Sl-depleted 30S and 70S ribosomes. For “tight” ribosomes, the association of S1 increases with the sixth power of Mg2+ concentration, but for 30S subunits and "loose" ribosomes, there is virtually no dependence of the association on Mg2+ over the same concentration range, 2-1O mM in Mg2+. The binding of S1 to 70S ribosomes at 10 mM Mg is stabilized by 2 kcal/mol compared to the binding to 30S subunits. When intact Si binds to tight ribosomes, the fluorescence anisotropy is that for virtually …

Information on fluorescent dyes used for water tracing and the results of six studies are reported. Optical brightener, direct yellow, fluorescein, rhodamine (WT), and other dyes are described and the procedures employed in their use ·in the field and in equilibration experiments are discussed. Three of the six studies consisted of investigations of the equilibration with passive detectors of three of the dyes. The absorption of optical brightener on fabric detectors was apparently linear with concentration and with immersion time, while detectors became rapidly saturated with direct yellow. Equilibrium of fluorescein on charcoal detectors with an elutriating solution was not …

The Effect Of Crowding On Growth Of The Cichlid Fish, Oreochromis Mossambicus, Bonnie A. Barrows
OES Theses and Dissertations
It has been reported that the Java tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, displays hypersensitivity to a substance it produces when biomass levels in a flow-through culture system exceed 20 g/1, resulting in reduced growth and high mortality. Experiments on the growth of this species in small tanks were conducted in order to determine whether O. mossambicus produces a growth-inhibiting compound under crowded conditions. This species was successfully maintained at biomass levels of 38 g/1 and 57 g/1 with a total mortality of only 4.5%.
The Java tilapia can grow rapidly in small aquaria, as indicated by the data taken during Experiment …
