The Potential Energy Surface Of (Nh3)2, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner Jan 1986

The Potential Energy Surface Of (Nh3)2, Z. Latajka, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Ab initio calculations at the SCF and correlated levels are carried out to characterize the potential energy surface of the NH3 dimer. The two basis sets used are 4‐31G∗ and a larger one containing two sets of d‐functions on N centers, 6‐31G∗∗ (1p, 2d). The only minimum occurring on the surface is a cyclic C2h structure in which the two H‐bonding protons are displaced 42° from the N‐‐N axis. The surface contains a very shallow valley along the direction leading from this geometry to a single linear H bond although …

Analysis Of A Worst Case Oil Spill Eis, Galveston, Gail Elizabeth Meisner Jan 1986

Analysis Of A Worst Case Oil Spill Eis, Galveston, Gail Elizabeth Meisner

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

On July 8, 1980, the Galveston district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) issued the permits required for the construction of an onshore deepwater port. The proposed port expansion project has been the subject of extensive controversy and litigation. The primary conflict has centered on the exclusion of a worst case oil spill analysis, as required by recent Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations. A rational-deductive approach to this decision leads to the conclusion that the economically and environmentally favored choice would have been to include the worst case analysis in the initial Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Because …

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton Jan 1986

Satellite Remote Sensing And Fisheries Applications, Holly M. Turton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Satellite remote sensing has the capacity to aid the three major components of a fishery: research, management, and the fishing industry. An evaluation of the potential of satellite-derived data to the fishery is based upon six case studies which are presented as evidence of the capabilities of satellite-borne sensors. Peripheral applications pertaining to the marine environment and possible applications for the future are reviewed. Three basic categories of remote sensing programs related to the fishery are defined: one to test the applicability of the technology to the field of fisheries; another to employ the technology to fisheries research; and a …

The Cruel Deception, Robert Sharpe Jan 1986

The Cruel Deception, Robert Sharpe

Experimentation Collection

With new legislation to replace the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 near at hand, the powerful vested interest groups whose profits and livelihood depend on laboratory animals are stepping up their campaigns to ensure the survival of vivisection. Have the benefits really been so great, and can vivisection achieve major advances in our present state of health?

History shows (McKeown 1979) that the real reasons for the dramatic increase in life expectancy since the middle of the last century are improvements in nutrition, living and working conditions, hygiene and sanitation, with medical measures only having a relatively marginal effect. The …

Correction Of The Basis Set Superposition Error In Scf And Mp2 Interaction Energies. The Water Dimer, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner Jan 1986

Correction Of The Basis Set Superposition Error In Scf And Mp2 Interaction Energies. The Water Dimer, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

There has been some discussion concerning whether basis set superposition error is more correctly evaluated using the full set of ghost orbitals of the partner molecule or some subset thereof. A formal treatment is presented, arguing that the full set is required at the Møller–Plesset level. Numerical support for this position is provided by calculation of the interaction energy between a pair of water molecules, using a series of moderate sized basis sets ranging from 6‐31G∗∗ to the [432/21] contraction suggested by Clementi and Habitz. These energies, at both the SCF and MP2 levels, behave erratically with respect to changes …

Grazing And Management Of Saltland Shrubs, C V. Malcolm, J. E. Pol Jan 1986

Grazing And Management Of Saltland Shrubs, C V. Malcolm, J. E. Pol

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

areas of bare saltland on farms need not be unproductive etesores. Many Western Australian farmers are now successfully growing salt-tolerant or halophytic shrubs such as bluebush (Maireana brevifolia), saltbushes (Atriplex spp.) and samphires (Halosarcia spp.) on these areas.

Department of agriculture trials and farmers' experience indicate that if saltland is planted with recommended shrubs, it can provide two months' valuable grazing for sheep during autumn and early winter, a time when paddock feed is scarce. Research by the Department has also identified a range of salt-tolerant shrubs suited to the various types of saltland.

Grazing trials to …

Global Competition For Environmental Markets - The Case Of The Water-Pollution Control Equipment Industry, Andrew C. Gross Jan 1986

Global Competition For Environmental Markets - The Case Of The Water-Pollution Control Equipment Industry, Andrew C. Gross

Marketing

Describes how pollution control spending around the world is set to increase from $70 billion (1979) to $115 billion in 1990 in real terms. Expands on the theory that cleaning up - or preventing mistakes - in the environment makes for financial and healthwise good sense. Posits that cleaner air leads to fewer respiratory problems and cleaner water in most areas of manufacturing results in lower fuel use. Focuses on trade, end use competitive modes and marketing patterns regarding water pollution control equipment (WPCE). States that WPCE shipments world wide are projected to rise from $3.3 billion in 1979 to …

The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier Jan 1986

The Effects Of Trace Organic Carbon On Aluminum Solubility, Fernand J. Tiblier

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Alum jar tests were performed on raw portable waters of varying TOC. Parameters monitored include alum dose, pH and mixing conditions. Finished waters were analyzed for residual aluminum, residual TOC and hardness in order to investigate the effects of TOC on aluminum residual as would be encountered by alum coagulation and lime softening process in practice.

Three-dimensional graphs of residual aluminum, residual TOC and pH were constructed to illustrate the relationship among these measured parameters for the different sources. Statistical analyses were conducted to verify aluminum-organic complexation at reduced alum dosages for varying TOCs; initial TOC, reaction pH and dose …

Biological Control Of Parkinsonia, W M. Woods

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

One of the most troublesome weeds in northern Australia'a lastoral country is Parkinsonia aculeata, commonly called Parkinsonia, Jerusalem Thorn, Palo Verde or Retama. In 983 Western Australia, ueensland and the Northern Territory started a joint biological control programme against this perst by sending the author overseas to search for its natural predators in southern USA, Mexico and Central America. A few insects show promise and one, a bruchid beetle Mimosetes ulkei, is being tested under Quarantine in Queensland.

Continued Ddt Persistence In Mississippi River Delta Streams: A Case Study, Stephen A. Sewell, Luther A. Knight Jr. Jan 1986

Continued Ddt Persistence In Mississippi River Delta Streams: A Case Study, Stephen A. Sewell, Luther A. Knight Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fish samples representative of several trophic levels were taken from the Wolf and Loosahatchie Rivers of western Tennessee during the early 1980s. Results indicate that DDT, with metabolites DDD and DDE, remains common in fish tissues in these areas and approaches the levels recommended as maxima for human consumption by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Samples of top carnivores and forage fishes, particularly the gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedlanum, commonly exceeded 500 ppb DDE. The results are discussed in light of sediment disturbing activities.

Factors Affecting Anion Movement And Retention In Four Forest Soils, D. W. Johnson, D. W. Cole, H. Van Miegroet, F. W. Horng

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Three hypotheses concerning the movement and retention of anions in forest soils were tested in a series of laboratory and field studies on two Tennessee Ultisols with mixed deciduous forest cover and two Washington Inceptisols, one with deciduous (red alder Alnus rubra Bong.) and one with coniferous [Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco] forest cover. The first hypothesis, that sulfate and phosphate retention was related to adsorption to free Fe and Al oxides, which were in turn related to soil parent material and degree of weathering, was not supported by results of laboratory and field studies. The young, relatively unweathered Washington …

The Role Of Citizen Participation In Siting A High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility, Barbara J. Johnson Jan 1986

The Role Of Citizen Participation In Siting A High-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility, Barbara J. Johnson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

In order to have a successful radioactive waste management and disposal program, the federal government must build public confidence and trust in the siting process (1). To do this three requirements must be met: 1) the program must be technically feasible; 2) the program must be politically palatable; and 3) the program must be societally acceptable.

Citizen participation is necessary to ensure that a radioactive waste management program is accepted by society and is politically feasible. Citizen involvement indirectly impacts technical feasibility by addressing the ethical and moral implications of nuclear waste disposal, thus helping to establish the parameters of …

Contaminant Migration Of Oil-And-Gas Drilling Fluids Within The Glaciated Sediments Of North-Central North Dakota, William A. Beal Jan 1986

Contaminant Migration Of Oil-And-Gas Drilling Fluids Within The Glaciated Sediments Of North-Central North Dakota, William A. Beal

Theses and Dissertations

A common practice during oil and gas well-site reclamation in North Dakota is to bury the drilling muds in shallow trenches near the borehole. These muds are saltwater based (between 100,000 and 300,000 mg/L of NaCl) and can contain high concentrations of chromium, lead, and other. toxic trace metals.

Two reclaimed oil and gas well sites were chosen for study in north-central North Dakota: the Winderl site in southeastern Renville County, and the Fossum site in west-central Bottineau County. The Winderl oil well was drilled in 1959, and the drilling fluids were disposed of in a shallow pit excavated in …

Penetrating Ionizing Radiation Levels Observed In The Lower Arkansas And White River Valleys Of Arkansas, C. E. Epperson, S. Meiners, D. Swindle

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Environmental levels of penetrating ionizing radiation were measured in the lower Arkansas and White River valleys of Arkansas. Measurements of environmental gamma and cosmic rays were made using a portable high pressure ionization chamber. The surveyed area encompassed a large coal-fired industrial plant. Observed exposure rates ranged from 5.9 microRoentgens per hour (μR/h) to 13.4 μR/h. The average exposure rate for the region was 8.8 μR/h. This value corresponds to 77 millirem (mrem) or 0.77 milliSieverts (mSv) per year. In comparison, a prior state-wide survey reported an average dose equivalent rate of 78.2 mrem (0.782 mSv) per year in Arkansas.
