Polymerization Of Methane, Ashok K. Sharma, H. Yasuda
Polymerization Of Methane, Ashok K. Sharma, H. Yasuda
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
Plasma polymerization of methane in a magnetically enhanced capacitively coupled bell jar reactor operating at a frequency of 10 kHz is reported. Dependence of polymer deposition rate on monomer feed rate (F), composite power parameter (W/FM), electrode temperature, and electrode cleanliness have been examined. Such functional properties as wettability, adhesion, and thermal stability of the polymer are found to depend on the composite power parameter (W/FM) of the plasma. The permeability studies indicate highly crosslinked nature of the polymer. ESCA studies reveal code position of electrode material with the polymer under high W/FM conditions, potential applications of plasma polymer of …

Anti-Cancer Action Of Metal Complexes: Electron Transfer And Oxidative Stress?, Peter Kovacic, William J. Popp, James R. Ames, Michael D. Ryan
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Evidence is presented in support of an electron transfer mechanism for various metal complexes possessing anti-neoplastic properties. Cyclic voltammetry was performed on several metallocenes, bis(acetato)bis(imidazole)Cu(II), and coordination compounds (Cu or Fe) of the anti-tumor agents, bipyridine, phenanthroline, hydroxyurea, diethyldithiocarbamate, and α, α1-bis(8-hydroxyquinolin-7-yl)-4-methoxytoluene. The favorable reduction potentials ranged from +0.5 to -0.5 V. Electrochemical behavior is correlated in some cases with structure and physiological activity. Relevant literature data are discussed.

Interactions Of Water-Soluble Metalloporphyrins With Nucleic Acids Studied By Resonance Raman Spectroscopy, Jinghua H. Schneider, Junichi Odo, Kazuo Nakamoto
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The resonance Raman spectra of water-soluble porphyrins, M(TMpy-P4) (M = Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(III)) and their mixtures with poly(dG-dC)2, poly(dA-dT)2 and calf thymus and salmon DNAs were measured using a divided rotating cell to determine the magnitudes of frequency shift and intensity variation resulting from M(TMpy-P4)-nucleic acid interactions. Bands II(Cβ-H bending, ˜ 1100 cm-1) and VIII(Cβ-Cβ stretch, ˜ 1570 cm-1) show a large and small upward shift, respectively, when Cu(TMpy-P4) and Ni(TMpy-P4) are intercalated at the G-C sites. In contrast, these bands show a small upward and downward shift, respectively, when Co(TMpy-P4) is groove-bound at the A-T …

Inulin-125I-Tyramine, An Improved Residualizing Label For Studies On Sites Of Catabolism Of Circulating Proteins, Janet L. Maxwell, John W. Baynes, Suzanne R. Thorpe
Faculty Publications
Residualizing labels for protein, such as dilactitol-125I-tyramine (125I-DLT) and cellobiitol-125I-tyramine, have been used to identify the tissue and cellular sites of catabolism of long-lived plasma proteins, such as albumin, immunoglobulins, and lipoproteins. The radioactive degradation products formed from labeled proteins are relatively large, hydrophilic, resistant to lysosomal hydrolases, and accumulate in lysosomes in the cells involved in degradation of the carrier protein. However, the gradual loss of the catabolites from cells (t1/2 approximately 2 days) has limited the usefulness of residualizing labels in studies on longer lived proteins. We describe here a higher molecular weight (Mr approximately 5000), more efficient …

Differential Cross Sections For Secondary Electron Production By 1.5-Kev Electrons In Water Vapor, K. W. Hollman, G. W. Kerby Iii, M. Eugene Rudd, J. H. Miller, S. T. Manson

Discrepancies between previous experimental values of differential cross sections for electron-impact ionization of water vapor and recent model calculations have been largely resolved. A new measurement with improved suppression of spurious electrons has removed most of the discrepancy in the midrange of detected electron energies. A second discrepancy at secondary energies just below the primary energy has been explained by a more accurate accounting for electrons scattered at angles between zero and the minimum angle of the experimental apparatus. The improved data show more clearly the oxygen K-shell edge in the spectra at small angles and the Bethe ridge at …
The Synthesis And Evaluation Of 5-Phenyloxazolidines As Potential Cardiovascular Drugs, Tammy C. Wang
The Synthesis And Evaluation Of 5-Phenyloxazolidines As Potential Cardiovascular Drugs, Tammy C. Wang
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Drugs such as adrenoceptor antagonists and certain centrally acting agents are known to lower blood pressure and thus serve as clinically useful antihypertensive agents. Norepinephrine 4, a natural ∝-adrenoceptor agonist, is the major agent associated with increased blood pressure in the periphery. Based on a careful structure-activity comparison, a series of substituted oxazolidines, 20, 21, 22 and 23, have been designed as possible antihypertensive candidates. Specifically, 22 and 23 have been synthesized to serve as potential norepinephrine antagonists.
Preliminary evaluation of these compounds indicated that they were not antihypertensive in nature. The more active compound, 23, …

Singular-Value Decomposition And The Grassberger-Procaccia Algorithm, Alfonso M. Albano, J. Muench, C. Schwartz, A. I. Mees, P. E. Rapp
Physics Faculty Research and Scholarship
A singular-value decomposition leads to a set of statistically independent variables which are used in the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm to calculate the correlation dimension of an attractor from a scalar time series. This combination alleviates some of the difficulties associated with each technique when used alone, and can significantly reduce the computational cost of estimating correlation dimensions from a time series.

The Effect Of Preozonation On The Anaerobic Biodegradability Of Resistant Phenolic Compounds, Yi-Tin Wang, Pin-Chieh Pai, James L. Latchew
KWRRI Research Reports
Ozone pretreatment studies of four model phenolic compounds were conducted to evaluate the effects of ozonation on the anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of these compounds. Two types of batch studies, the Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) and the Anaerobic Toxicity Assay (ATA), were performed on samples ozonated upon phenol, o-cresol, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol.
Experimental results showed that toxic and refractory phenolic compounds were converted to methane gas by means of preozonation. In general, the biodegradable fraction of the oxidation products increased as the ozone dose was increased. However, ozonation to achieve at least 60% COD reduction was necessary to faciliate methane …

The chemistry of Maillard or browning reactions of glycated proteins is being studied in model systems in vitro in order to characterize potential reaction pathways and products in biological systems. In previous work with the Amadori rearrangement product N alpha-formyl-N epsilon-fructoselysine (fFL), an analog of glycated lysine residues in proteins, we showed that fFL was oxidatively cleaved between C-2 and C-3 of the carbohydrate chain to yield N epsilon-carboxymethyllysine (CML) and D-erythronic acid. We then detected CML in proteins glycated in vitro, as well as in human lens proteins and collagen in vivo (Ahmed, M. U., Thorpe, S. R., and …
