Long-Term Decline In Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Western Basin Of Lake Erie, Thomas F. Nalepa, Bruce A. Manny, James C. Roth, Samuel C. Mozley, Donald W. Schloesser Jan 1991

Long-Term Decline In Freshwater Mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae) Of The Western Basin Of Lake Erie, Thomas F. Nalepa, Bruce A. Manny, James C. Roth, Samuel C. Mozley, Donald W. Schloesser

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Long-term trends in the abundance of unionids in the western basin of Lake Erie were examined from data collected at 17 stations in 1961, 1972, and 1982. The mean number of unionids at these stations declined over this time period, decreasing from 10 m-2 in 1961, to 6 m-2 in 1972, down to 4 m-2 in 1982. This decline in abundance was reflected in the decrease in the number of stations where mussels were found; unionids were found at 16 of the 17 stations in 1961, but at only 6 stations in 1982. Reasons for the decrease …

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink Jan 1991

13.2.8. Rescue And Rehabilitation Of Oiled Birds, Sallie Welte, Lynne Frink

Waterfowl Management Handbook

Oil contamination of waterfowl and seabirds has been documented as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in birds for more than 50 years. Each year more than one million birds may die from oil contamination in North Atlantic waters alone; worldwide mortality is unknown.

Of special concern is that many of the seabirds commonly affected are not prolific breeders, and assessment of each species’ status is handicapped by the difficulty of accurately monitoring trends in marine bird populations.

Oiled bird rehabilitation is an intensive, crisis-oriented response, requiring an experienced management agency, specialized medical expertise, stockpiles of specially designed equipment, …

Predation Risk And The Importance Of Cover For Juvenile Rainbow Trout In Lentic Systems, R. A. Tabor, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh Jan 1991

Predation Risk And The Importance Of Cover For Juvenile Rainbow Trout In Lentic Systems, R. A. Tabor, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss stocked in midelevation reservoirs in Utah inhabit shallow nearshore areas and are vulnerable to predation from piscivorous fish and birds. We determined the use and importance of nearshore habitats by (1) measuring habitat selection by, prey availability to, and feeding of juvenile rainbow trout in two reservoirs with populations of predators, and (2) measuring survival and growth rates in the presence and absence of cover in a pond experiment where adult brown trout Salmo trutta were predators. In the reservoirs juvenile rainbow trout (60–120 mm standard length) were abundant in complex inshore habitats but avoided …

Ab Initio Study Of The Intermolecular Potential Of Ar–H2o, G. Chalasinski, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner Jan 1991

Ab Initio Study Of The Intermolecular Potential Of Ar–H2o, G. Chalasinski, M. M. Szczesniak, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The combination of supermolecular Møller–Plesset treatment with the perturbation theory of intermolecular forces is applied in the analysis of the potential‐energy surface of Ar–H2O. The surface is very isotropic with the lowest barrier for rotation of ∼35 cm−1 above the absolute minimum. The lower bound for De is found to be 108 cm−1 and the complex reveals a very floppy structure, with Ar moving freely from the H‐bridged structure to the coplanar and almost perpendicular arrangement of the C2 –water axis and the Ar–O axis, ‘‘T‐shaped’’ structure. This motion is almost isoenergetic (energy change …

Size Classification Of Bed Sediment And Selection Of Resuspension Monitoring Sites In Upper Tampa Bay, Florida, David H. Schoellhamer, Southwest Florida Water Management District (Sfwmd), City Of Tampa, City Of St. Petersburg, Hillsborough County, Pinellas County, Tampa Port Authority

Reports

The size classification of surficial bed sediments in upper Tampa Bay, Florida, including Hillsborough Bay, Old Tampa Bay, and middle Tampa Bay south of the Interbay Peninsu la, was determined during 1987-89. Fathometer transects were performed throughout the study area to determine the reflective characteristics of the bed, and grab samples were collected to relate the fathometer data to size classifications of sediments. The data collected during this study indicate that fine bed sediments are most abundant in Hillsborough Bay and least abundant in the southern part of the study area closest to the mouth of Tampa Bay. Generally, the …

Radon In Iowa Homes: Results Of Screening Measurements, Laurent Hodges, Lynne Gillette Jan 1991

Radon In Iowa Homes: Results Of Screening Measurements, Laurent Hodges, Lynne Gillette

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Homeowner-initiated short-term radon screening measurements in Iowa homes show that only about 30% of the homes have low enough radon levels - below 148 Bq/m (4.0 pC1/L) - that no follow-up measurements are necessary. Over 6 percent of the homes have screening measurements in excess of 740 Bq/m3 (20 pCi/L), a level at which prompt follow-up measurements are recommended. In all parts of the state, the range of radon results extends from low levels (below 37 Bq/m3 = 1 pCi/L) to high levels (above 740 Bq/m3). The average radon results tend to be higher than the …

Lxodes Dammini (Acari, Ixodidae) And Borrelia Burgdorferi In Iowa, Mark G. Novak, Wayne A. Rowley, Kenneth B. Platt, David M. Bartholomew, Michelle D. Senne

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

A statewide study to evaluate the presence, distribution and abundance of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini, and the spirochete, Borrelia burgdorfen, in Iowa was initiated in 1989. Six hundred and seventy-one tick collections were received from health professionals, conservation employees and concerned citizens. Additional ticks were obtained by flagging, small mammal trapping and deer checks in selected areas of Iowa. Nine I. dammini were collected in 1989 from seven counties in the eastern half of the state. Six of these were tested for B. burgdorferi and all were negative. Flagging, small mammal trapping and deer checks in eastern Iowa failed …

The Axr1 Mutation Of Arabidopsis Is Expressed 10 Booth Roots And Shoots, Cythia Lincoln, Mark Estelle Jan 1991

The Axr1 Mutation Of Arabidopsis Is Expressed 10 Booth Roots And Shoots, Cythia Lincoln, Mark Estelle

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

In order to identify genes involved in auxin action we have isolated a number of mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana which are resistant co exogenous application of either indole-3-acetic acid or 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacecic acid. One of the genes identified in chis way is the Axr1 gene. Recessive mutations in this gene confer resistance co auxin as well as a number of morphological defects. In this report we describe the isolation of at least two new axr1 alleles. In addition, we show that the axr1 mutation affects gravitropic growth of the root, auxin-induced ethylene biosynthesis and growth in tissue culture. Our results …

Low-Silica And High-Calcium Stone In The Newman Limestone (Mississippian) On Pine Mountain, Harlan County, Southeastern Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr., Jack R. Moody, Thomas L. Robl, Lance S. Barron Jan 1991

Low-Silica And High-Calcium Stone In The Newman Limestone (Mississippian) On Pine Mountain, Harlan County, Southeastern Kentucky, Garland R. Dever Jr., Jack R. Moody, Thomas L. Robl, Lance S. Barron

Information Circular--KGS

The coal industry of Kentucky is an important market for limestone. Coal producers use limestone as rock dust for explosion abatement in underground coal mines and as a neutralizing agent in surface-mine reclamation and acid-drainage control. Crushed stone is also used for constructing and maintaining haulage roads.

In the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field, the coal-bearing rocks of Pennsylvanian age generally do not contain limestones that are thick enough to quarry or mine economically. But movement on the Pine Mountain overthrust fault has brought the Newman Limestone (Mississippian) to the surface along Pine Mountain in the southeastern part of the coal …

An Expert Inference Engine For Generation Of Nursing Diagnoses, Tom Edgar

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Expert computer systems for use in the nursing profession are emerging as a potentially viable alternative to manual procedures. As nursing science continues to develop, the intellectual requirements of assessment and diagnosis are demanding that the professional nurse draw on an ever increasing bank of knowledge to interact effectively with clients. An expert system appears a promising tool to assist the nurse in storing and accessing some of the knowledge necessary to perform the assessment and diagnostic functions.

Problems and opportunities In applying artificial intelligence techniques to nursing science are documented and the current state of expert systems for nursing …

The Relationship Between Plaintiff Sucess Rates Before Trial And At Trial, Theodore Eisenberg Jan 1991

The Relationship Between Plaintiff Sucess Rates Before Trial And At Trial, Theodore Eisenberg

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Legal cases that reach trial are a biased subset of underlying disputes. This makes it difficult to study the legal system by observing tried cases. This paper examines the relationship between plaintiff success at pretrial motion and trial stages across many categories of cases. The large, significant positive relationship between plaintiff success rates at these two procedural stages suggests that characteristics of case categories influence outcomes at both stages. Observers of a category of tried cases or cases resolved by motion can make informed judgments about how that category of cases fares at the other procedural stage.

El Papel De Las Mujeres En La Conservación De Los Bosques Del Nepal, Augusta Molnar Jan 1991

El Papel De Las Mujeres En La Conservación De Los Bosques Del Nepal, Augusta Molnar

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Effect Of Age Misreporting In China On The Calculation Of Mortality Rates At Very High Ages, Ansley J. Coale, Shaomin Li Jan 1991

The Effect Of Age Misreporting In China On The Calculation Of Mortality Rates At Very High Ages, Ansley J. Coale, Shaomin Li

Management Faculty Publications

When mortality rates by age are calculated from recorded deaths and enumerated populations, rates at higher ages are typically in error because of misstated ages. Mortality rates for China in 1981 have been calculated from the number of deaths in 1981 in each household recorded in the 1982 census, and from the census population back-projected one year. Because age was determined from date of birth, and because persons of the Chinese culture have very precise knowledge of date of birth, the mortality rates even at high ages should be unusually accurate. This expectation is fulfilled for most of China, but …

Using Viruses To Examine Soil Treatment Of Septic Tank Effluent, Mark A. Gross, Jenna Hestir, Duane C. Wolf, E. Moye Rutledge Jan 1991

Using Viruses To Examine Soil Treatment Of Septic Tank Effluent, Mark A. Gross, Jenna Hestir, Duane C. Wolf, E. Moye Rutledge

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Viral contamination of drinking water supplies due to inadequate renovation of septic tank effluent (STE) is a public health concern. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the use of a bacteriophage to evaluate virus movement in a soil treatment system. Viruses - MS2 bacteriophage - were injected into a wastewater treatment system with soil absorption trenches and drainage tiles, and the drain tile effluent was collected and assayed for the phage. The virus suspension was assayed and a measured amount of STE and virus suspension was pumped into the system allowing for calculation of the influent virus titer. …

Predictive Probabilities In Employee Drug-Testing, John M. Gleason, Darold T. Barnum Jan 1991

Predictive Probabilities In Employee Drug-Testing, John M. Gleason, Darold T. Barnum

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Substance abuse in the U.S. has been estimated to cost $99 billion annually through lower productivity. Yet the authors urge caution in attempting to reduce these costs and health and safety Risks. In doing so, they cite commonly high frequencies of false negatives and false positives in employee drug tests - the latter having the potential to do great injustice to many drug-free employees.

Migration Patterns Of Double-Crested Cormorants East Of The Rocky Mountains, Richard A. Dolbeer Jan 1991

Migration Patterns Of Double-Crested Cormorants East Of The Rocky Mountains, Richard A. Dolbeer

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The 5589 recovery records for Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) banded in North America from 1923 to 1988 were analyzed to determine migration patterns and the source of populations wintering in the lower Mississippi Valley and Gulf of Mexico coastal region. Autumn migration from areas north of latitude 42°N primarily occurred in October and November. Spring migration occurred mainly in April for birds >2 yr old and in May for birds <1 yr old. During summer,1-yr-old birds were recovered significantly farther from their natal colony than were older birds. Cormorants nesting in Canada and the northern United States from Alberta to the Gulf of St. Lawrence migrated in winter primarily to the southern United States between Texas and Florida. There was considerable mixing and overlap in winter of nesting populations from widely divergent areas. From 38 to 70% of the birds from Saskatchewan throughout the Great Lakes region were recovered in the lower Mississippi Valley as were 10% of the birds from such disparate areas as Alberta and the New England coast. There was little mixing of populations from east and west of the Rocky Mountains.
