Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee
Entity Labels Are Not Entity Signals: A Framework For Observable Relevance In Document Re-Ranking, Utshab Kumar Ghosh, Shubham Chatterjee
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Entity-aware document retrieval uses query-associated entities as ranking signals, assuming that semantically relevant entities are also useful retrieval signals. We show this assumption is insufficient - and explain why. Unlike terms, which are ground-truth observations, entity links are hypotheses produced by an imperfect linker: an entity can be topically central yet provide no discriminative signal if the linker fires indiscriminately across relevant and non-relevant documents. We formalize this as a distinction between Conceptual Entity Relevance (CER) - whether an entity is topically related to a query - and Observable Entity Relevance (OER) - whether its observed presence in a collection …

A Blockchain-Integrated Federated Learning Model And Autoencoder-Based Feature Reduction For Improving Iot Intrusion Detection, Tahseen A. Wotaifi
Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity
The rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) environments has brought forth a wealth of security challenges in detecting network intrusions in diverse and resource-restricted systems. Privacy, scalability, and single point of failure issues plague traditional centralized intrusion detection solutions. To address these challenges, the study proposes a secure and adaptive intrusion detection model using Federated Learning (FL) and Blockchain, augmented with autoencoder-based feature reduction. The ToN-IoT dataset is pre-processed, and then an unsupervised autoencoder is used to build informative low-dimensional feature representations. The processed data is deployed to various clients to mimic a real federated situation. Every client will …

Cultural Traits May Replace Human Mobility Data In Forecasting Covid-19 Mortality: A Deep Learning Approach, Saif Abbas, Tamer Oraby, Michael G. Tyshenko, Samit Bhattacharyya
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for accurate epidemic forecasting to support public health decision-making. Most existing approaches depend heavily on human mobility data, while largely neglecting population behavior shaped by socio-cultural norms. In this study, we analyze daily COVID-19 mortality and Google mobility data from 72 countries during the first 130 d of the pandemic, a period characterized by high uncertainty and behavioral heterogeneity. In particular, we examine whether Hofstede’s country-level cultural dimensions can serve as latent behavioral forecasters of mortality in lieu of dynamic mobility indicators. Using 100 d for training and 30 d for forecasting, we employ …

Selenoprotein P And Selenium As Potential Diagnostic Biomarkers For Breast Cancer Patients, Farah A. Rashid, Rawaa A. Ali, Hanaa A. Ali
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Breast cancer incidence increases in last decade. Oxidative stress increases during cancer development causes consuming of antioxidants. Selenium and its transporting protein, selenoprotein P have an important role in redox homeostasis. This study aims to investigate whether or not selenium and selenoprotein P could be diagnostic biomarkers for breast cancer patients. This study was included 30 individuals in control group who is age- and BMI-matched with 60 breast cancer patients. Selenium was measured by colorimetric assay kit and selenoprotein P was determined by Sandwich ELISA kits. The results indicate significant decrease (p < 0.0001) of serum selenium and selenoprotein P in breast cancer patients compared to control. A positive significant correlation (r = 0.6214, p < 0.0001) was found between selenium and selenoprotein P in breast cancer patients. Selenium has an excellent diagnostic accuracy with area under curve 0.9831, sensitivity 95% and specificity 100% at cut-off less than 3.54 mmol/L. Furthermore, selenoprotein P has also an excellent area under curve 0.9958 with sensitivity 96.77% and specificity 100% at cut-off less than 4.15 ng/ml. These exploratory findings appear that selenium and selenoprotein P could be potential diagnostic biomarkers for breast cancer patients. Further investigations in large-multicenter populations are needed to confirm results.

Differentiating And Accommodating Ocd And Anxiety In Mathematical Contexts, Madeline F. Gavares
Interdivisional Studies Summer Fellows
Students in mathematics classrooms may experience emotional and cognitive challenges that affect how they engage with coursework and assessments. While math anxiety has been widely documented, less attention has been given to how obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), particularly checking behaviors, may influence students’ experiences in math settings. This study explores how students who report math anxiety and those who report OCD symptoms describe their engagement with math tasks and test-taking. Drawing on survey and interview data from students and teachers, this study examines how these experiences are articulated and perceived in academic math contexts, rather than evaluating ability or outcomes. By …

Enhancing Ecological Resilience: Evaluating Peanut Island's Breakwater Impacts On Coral Reef And Shoreline Dynamics, Dayana Castillo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic shoreline modification and inlet-driven hydrodynamic processes can alter sediment transport pathways and sediment deposition in adjacent coral reef environments. This study evaluated how coastal engineering structures, sediment transport dynamics, and localized hydrodynamic processes influence sediment distribution and coral-associated habitats at Peanut Island, Florida. Beach profile surveys, shoreline mapping, sediment grain size analyses, coral monitoring, and historical aerial imagery were used to assess shoreline variability, sediment characteristics, and long-term shoreline evolution between October 2024 and July 2025. Results indicated that much of the eastern shoreline remained relatively stable, while greater variability was observed along the southern shoreline adjacent to the …
Ai-Powered Knowledge Engines As Research Infrastructure For Systematic Knowledge Discovery, Gary Welz
Ai-Powered Knowledge Engines As Research Infrastructure For Systematic Knowledge Discovery, Gary Welz
Publications and Research
This paper proposes knowledge engines as a framework for understanding how intelligent systems — both human and artificial — systematically discover, integrate, and generate knowledge. We argue that history’s greatest scientific minds functioned as knowledge engines, processing information through iterative cycles of ingestion, analysis, synthesis, and communication, guided by curiosity and willingness to challenge established beliefs.
We propose a taxonomy of nine integrated capabilities — ingestion, digestion, analysis, calculation, comparison, connection, association, analogy, and multimodal communication — that any serious knowledge engine must combine systematically. The argument is deliberately integrative: achieving ambitious research goals requires orchestrating all nine capabilities within …

Ni2-Imido Bispincer Platforms: Cooperative Reactivity Enabled Through Substrate Addition Across A Ni2n Unit, David De Los Santos, Kritika Gour, Manar M. Shoshani
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications
Transition metal imido complexes are renowned for their capacity to undertake challenging 1,2 additions owing to the high basicity of the imido moiety. Access to transition metal imidos is often limited to the addition of organic azides to metal precursors, hindering the design of molecular constructs incorporating imido units. Bimetallic bispincer complexes, 1 and 2, are presented, which are anchored by a central imido moiety supported by pyridyl imine donors, forming highly planarized Ni2N-aryl cores. Complex 2, which also features a Ni─Ni σ-bond, is able to engage in cooperative substrate cleavage of main group hydrides via a formal 1,2 addition …

This paper explores the evolving transition from automation to adjudication by examining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in dispute settlement processes. It assesses how AI can enhance procedural efficiency, support judicial reasoning, and improve access to justice. Adopting a qualitative and interpretive approach, the study analyzes academic scholarship, policy frameworks, and comparative international practices to understand the integration of AI within judicial and quasi-judicial settings (Abedi et al., 2025). The findings suggest that while AI significantly improves administrative processes and provides valuable decision-support tools, it also raises critical concerns regarding algorithmic bias, lack of transparency, and the risk of …
Harmful Algal Blooms: Risks For Food In Utah, Jose Brandao, Sarah Erwin, Stephanie Vaughn, Clare Entwistle
Harmful Algal Blooms: Risks For Food In Utah, Jose Brandao, Sarah Erwin, Stephanie Vaughn, Clare Entwistle
All Current Publications
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a problem because they can produce toxins that make water unsafe for people, animals, and the environment. In recent years, HABs have emerged as a growing concern in freshwater systems throughout Utah, including irrigation canals, reservoirs, and livestock ponds. HABs in freshwater are caused by cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae. These microorganisms can release dangerous toxins that can harm swimmers, pets, and the food supply. Unlike foodborne pathogens, these toxins cannot be removed by boiling, cooking, or washing the food. Therefore, regular monitoring is essential to detect HABs early and reduce exposure risks. This fact …

Water Scarcity On Arizona’S Navajo Nation, As An Environmental Justice Issue, Chenoa Marks
Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal
For the Navajo–or Diné, meaning ‘the people’ in Diné Bizaad (Navajo language)–water is not only a resource. It is life, story, and relationship. It is tied to origin, movement, and balance within the natural and spiritual world. Water exists not only in rivers and rainfall, but in teachings, ceremonies, and the way knowledge is passed down from one generation to the next. In this sense, water is both physical and cultural, shaping how people live, understand the land, and connect to one another.
At the same time, water on the Navajo Nation–known by the Diné as Diné Bikéyah, also translated …
