Magma In A Beaker: Analog Experiments With Water And Various Salts Or Sugar For Teaching Igneous Petrology, John B. Brady Jan 2009

Magma In A Beaker: Analog Experiments With Water And Various Salts Or Sugar For Teaching Igneous Petrology, John B. Brady

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Solutions of water and a salt or sugar make excellent experimental analog magmas for teaching concepts of igneous petrology because of the comparatively low temperatures involved, the simplicity of the apparatus needed, and the responsiveness of familiar chemical systems. Boiling of these aqueous solutions on a hot plate can be used to increase the concentration of a dissolved salt or sugar to levels that may be predicted by steam-saturation curves. Sufficiently concentrated solutions will crystallize, partially or completely, upon cooling to room temperature. Binary temperature–composition phase diagrams for H2O and KCl, NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, …

Painting The Voice: Weblogs And Writing Instruction In The High School Classroom, Marilyn V. Olander Jan 2007

Painting The Voice: Weblogs And Writing Instruction In The High School Classroom, Marilyn V. Olander

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Writing is a complex cognitive skill, a technology for capturing speech whose forms and conventions began in the dawn of civilization and were in place and stable by the Middle Ages. Writing and reading are the foundation of literacy, fundamental to success in school and in the adult world. No comprehensive theory of composition guides the teaching of writing, although historically two approaches have been favored: writing as a skill acquired through the memorization and recognition of principles of grammar and usage, and more recently, writing as a process of recursive strategies of pi arming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. …

Introducing Semantics In Web Personalization: The Role Of Ontologies, Magdalini Eirinaki, Dimitrios Mavroeidis, George Tsatsaronis, Michalis Vazirgiannis Jan 2006

Introducing Semantics In Web Personalization: The Role Of Ontologies, Magdalini Eirinaki, Dimitrios Mavroeidis, George Tsatsaronis, Michalis Vazirgiannis

Faculty Publications

Web personalization is the process of customizing a web site to the needs of each specific user or set of users. Personalization of a web site may be performed by the provision of recommendations to the users, high-lighting/adding links, creation of index pages, etc. The web personalization systems are mainly based on the exploitation of the navigational patterns of the web site’s visitors. When a personalization system relies solely on usage-based results, however, valuable information conceptually related to what is finally recommended may be missed. The exploitation of the web pages’ semantics can considerably improve the results of web usage …

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Case-Control Study: Past Chemical Exposures And The Measurement Of The Red Blood Cell Acetylcholinesterase Reactivity In Vitro When Challenged At Various Dosages By Chlorpyrifos-Oxon, Naomi J. Bienfang Jan 2005

Bienfang

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to analyze the red blood cell acetylcholinesterase (RBC AChE) reactivity levels among persons with amyothropic lateral sclerosis (PALS) (cases) and their controls when challenged with the oxon form of the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos. The ultimate objective was to determine if a correlation exists between the RBC AChE reactivity level and the participants' disease status and/or exposure to toxins through occupations and hobbies.

Cases in this study were individuals diagnosed by a neurologist with sporadic ALS. Controls were individuals who were not genetically related to the PALS and were neuromuscular disease free. Controls were a …

Pope’s ‘Suidas’ is not a man but a work, The Suda (or Stronghold): a massive 10th century Byzantine Greek historical encyclopedia of the ancient Mediterranean world, covering the whole of Greek and Roman antiquity and also including Biblical and Christian material.

Preserved in several medieval manuscripts, it has been edited and published several times since the end of the 14th century in traditional hard-copy scholarly editions, most recently that of Ada Adler (Teubner, 5 volumes: 1928-1938, reprinted 1971). The Suda On Line (SOL) project, begun in 1998 as part of the Stoa Consortium, opens up this stronghold of …

Optical Machine Recognition Of Lower-Case Greek Characters Of Any Size, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha Oct 1989

Optical Machine Recognition Of Lower-Case Greek Characters Of Any Size, Ivan X. D. D'Cunha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

An algorithm utilizing a syntactic approach and a criterion based on normalized moments is defined for the reliable, automatic, machine recognition of handwritten and printed Greek characters of any size and font. In this approach a binary image of the character in question is obtained initially; its skeleton is then produced by utilizing a standard thinning algorithm. The classification process then incorporates the topological features of the characters such as existence of closed curves, number of intersections, number and location of free ends, axial symmetry, and the criteria derived from normalized moments to uniquely identify each pattern. Experiments conducted demonstrated …
