Comparative Anatomical Study Of The Grasses In The Range Lands Of Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu Of India, B. Makesh Kumar, J. Stephan, P. Kumar

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Grasses are the crucial component of the rural rangeland ecology. Besides the morphological studies, micro-morphological characters such as stem anatomy were also investigated in this study. So as to get detailed understanding about variations during the summer and monsoon within species and also differentiating the species with the help of supplementary characters such as number of cortical layers and vascular bundles, xylem vessel length etc. In grass anatomy the characters are rather constant for some species and highly variable for others probably often due to the climatic variation. Still the characters are very helpful to differentiate and determine the genus. …

Background

Kuwait had its first COVID-19 in late February, and until October 6, 2020 it recorded 108,268 cases and 632 deaths. Despite implementing one of the strictest control measures-including a three-week complete lockdown, there was no sign of a declining epidemic curve. The objective of the current analyses is to determine, hypothetically, the optimal timing and duration of a full lockdown in Kuwait that would result in controlling new infections and lead to a substantial reduction in case hospitalizations.

Methods

The analysis was conducted using a stochastic Continuous-Time Markov Chain (CTMC), eight state model that depicts the disease transmission and …

Remote Sensing Application To Grassland Monitoring, Z. B. Nan Jan 2022

Remote Sensing Application To Grassland Monitoring, Z. B. Nan

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Application of remote sensing to the management of grassland resources, the role this plays in developing sustainable grassland farming systems and opportunities for further development are outlined. Use of remote sensing technologies in grassland monitoring has a history of more than 30 years. Both fine- and coarse-grained remote sensing techniques are used to monitor and study grasslands. Fine-grained techniques are used to study landscape scale processes through the use of sensors providing spatial resolution of a few meters, whereas coarse-grained techniques are used to study catchment scale areas, and even entire biomes, using satellite-based sensors with a spatial resolution of …

Hurricanes Substantially Reduce The Nutrients In Tropical Forested Watersheds In Puerto Rico, Jiamei Sun, Xinyuan Wei, Yu Zhou, Catherine Chan, Jiaojiao Diao Jan 2022

Hurricanes Substantially Reduce The Nutrients In Tropical Forested Watersheds In Puerto Rico, Jiamei Sun, Xinyuan Wei, Yu Zhou, Catherine Chan, Jiaojiao Diao

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Because nutrients including nitrogen and phosphorus are generally limited in tropical forest ecosystems in Puerto Rico, a quantitative understanding of the nutrient budget at a watershed scale is required to assess vegetation growth and predict forest carbon dynamics. Hurricanes are the most frequent disturbance in Puerto Rico and play an important role in regulating lateral nitrogen and phosphorus exports from the forested watershed. In this study, we selected seven watersheds in Puerto Rico to examine the immediate and lagged effects of hurricanes on nitrogen and phosphorous exports. Our results suggest that immediate surges of heavy precipitation associated with hurricanes accelerate …

In 2006, Walker et al. published an article titled, “A Handful of Heuristics and Some Propositions for Understanding Resilience in Social-ecological Systems.” The article was incorporated into the Ecology and Society special feature, Exploring Resilience in Social-Ecological Systems. Walker et al. identified five heuristics and posed 14 propositions for understanding resilience in social-ecological systems. At the time, the authors hoped the paper would promote experimentation, critique, and application of these ideas in resilience and social-ecological systems research. To determine the extent to which these propositions have achieved the authors’ hopes, we reviewed the scientific literature on socialecological systems since the …

Agricultural crop cover identification is a major issue and time-consuming effort to verify the crop type through surveys of the individual field or using prehistoric methods. To establish the scenario of crop identification, the stage of crop provides diverse spatial information about the variety of crops due to its spectral changes. The main aim of this study was to the identify the crop types and their behavior using remote sensing and geographical information system-based approach. Moreover, two main methods were applied to the Sentinel-2 satellite data in which one is random forest based supervised classification and another was Normalize Difference …

Imaging spectroscopy provides the opportunity to incorporate leaf and canopy optical data into ecological studies, but the extent to which remote sensing of vegetation can enhance the study of belowground processes is not well understood. In terrestrial systems, aboveground and belowground vegetation quantity and quality are coupled, and both influence belowground microbial processes and nutrient cycling. We hypothesized that ecosystem productivity, and the chemical, structural and phylogenetic-functional composition of plant communities would be detectable with remote sensing and could be used to predict belowground plant and soil processes in two grassland biodiversity experiments: the BioDIV experiment at Cedar Creek Ecosystem …

Tree rings provide an invaluable long-term record for understanding how climate and other drivers shape tree growth and forest productivity. However, conventional tree-ring analysis methods were not designed to simultaneously test effects of climate, tree size, and other drivers on individual growth. This has limited the potential to test ecologically relevant hypotheses on tree growth sensitivity to environmental drivers and their interactions with tree size. Here, we develop and apply a new method to simultaneously model nonlinear effects of primary climate drivers, reconstructed tree diameter at breast height (DBH), and calendar year in generalized least squares models that account for …

Pronounced Increases In Nitrogen Emissions And Deposition Due To The Historic 2020 Wildfires In The Western U.S., Patrick C. Campbell, Daniel Tong, Rick Saylor, Yunyao Lii, Siqi Ma, Xiaoyang Zhang, Shoba Kondragunta, Fangjun Li

GSCE Faculty Publications

Wildfire outbreaks can lead to extreme biomass burning (BB) emissions of both oxidized (e.g., nitrogen oxides; NOx= NO+NO2) and reduced form(e.g., ammonia; NH3) nitrogen (N) compounds. High N emissions aremajor concerns for air quality, atmospheric deposition, and consequential human and ecosystemhealth impacts. In this study, we use both satellite-based observations and modeling results to quantify the contribution of BB to the total emissions, and approximate the impact on total N deposition in the western U.S. Our results show that during the 2020 wildfire season of August–October, BB contributes significantly to the total emissions, with a satellite-derived fraction of NH3 to …

“Abolition As Presence”: An East Bay Ca Case Study Of Black Food Geographies, Ayize James Jan 2022

“Abolition As Presence”: An East Bay Ca Case Study Of Black Food Geographies, Ayize James

Environmental Studies Honors Projects

Using abolitionist methodologies, the author argues that food activism contests “food deserts” by making food present in sources alternative to supermarkets. The project can be broken into two central inquiries: (1) How do race and class formations in the East Bay generate landscapes of food inaccess that are labeled “food deserts”? and (2) How does food activism in the East Bay generate lasting alternatives to supermarkets?, which is explored through three case studies of food justice organizing in the East Bay.

Guidebook For Omaha's Urban Geology And Anthropocene Nebraska Well Drillers 2022 Field Trip, Harmon Maher, Ashlee L. Dere, Melina Luethje

Geography and Geology Faculty Books and Monographs

This geologic field trip focus is somewhat atypical but arguably reflects an ongoing evolution within the geosciences. Instead of traveling out into rural settings to look at outcrops and the stratigraphy exposed, or rural landforms and their geologic history, this field trip is focused on built and engineered environments in the Omaha area and the ‘modified’ associated geologic processes such as surface and groundwater flow, weathering, and soil formation. The ongoing evolution includes an increase in a multidisciplinary system science approach and is driven by a need to address environmental and resource management challenges using new tools and conceptual frameworks. …

Evaluating A Peer Assisted Learning Programme For Mature Access Foundation Students Undertaking Computer Programming At An Irish University, Nevan Bermingham, Frances Boylan, Barry J. Ryan

Articles

Access Foundation Programmes are a widening-participation initiative designed to encourage engagement in higher education among under-represented groups. This includes socioeconomic and educational disadvantage. Mature students in particular enrolled on these programmes experience greater difficulties making the transition to tertiary education, especially when they opt to study disciplines traditionally considered difficult. Computer programming is perceived as a traditionally difficult subject with lower pass rates and progression rates typically than other subjects.

This paper describes the first of a three-cycle action research study examining the perceived effects of a structured Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Programme for mature students enrolled on a computer …

Towards Water Literacy: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of Standards For Teaching And Learning About Humans And Water, Silvia‑Jessica Mostacedo‑Marasovic, Brooke Colleen Mott, Holly White, Cory T. Forbes

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Water is critical to sustain human existence. Water literacy involves understanding the interactions within and between natural and human dimensions of water systems to support informed decision-making, an important outcome for learners of all ages. It is therefore critical to foster water literacy in today’s global citizens, particularly through formal education. The purpose of this study, in tandem with a parallel study focusing on natural dimensions of water systems (Mostacedo-Marasovic et al., in press), is to examine water-related K-12 standards for teaching and learning about human dimensions of water systems to develop a comprehensive and transdisciplinary perspective on water education. …

Understanding The Impacts Of Urban Agriculture In Gentrifying Neighborhoods In Denver, Kate Johnson Jan 2022

Understanding The Impacts Of Urban Agriculture In Gentrifying Neighborhoods In Denver, Kate Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urban Agriculture is prominent in cities across the United States and has been studied in relation to food security, sustainability, and gentrification. Urban agriculture is context specific and can include individual gardens, community gardens, guerilla gardening, and urban farms. Urban agriculture is a product of the community it is based in, depending on politics, history, and social environments. For these reasons, the relationship between urban agriculture and the community is an area where more research is needed. This thesis explores the role visible gardens play in community building, sustainability, and food security in gentrifying neighborhoods in Denver. Through qualitative methods …

Provenance Of The Northern Range, Trinidad Using Detrital Zircon U-Pb Geochronology: Implications For Northern South American River System Paleogeography, Cheyenne Bartelt

Geology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

The Northern Range of Trinidad is located in a key area for evaluating the Mesozoic-Cenozoic evolution of the Caribbean and South American plates. Here, we present detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology for 2391 grains from ten samples collected from metasedimentary rocks of the Northern Range. These data are used to bracket the maximum depositional age of the fossil-poor metasedimentary rocks from the Northern Range and to investigate the provenance of their sedimentary protoliths. Detrital zircon ages range between 3136.5 ± 22.9 Ma and 139.0 ± 5.4 Ma, reflecting apparent contribution from a variety of crustal affinities; however, since the youngest ages …
