The Geology Of The Interstate Highway 244 And 44 Exchange, Kirkwood, Missouri, John Neil Thomas

Masters Theses

"During the summer of 1964, construction was completed on the intersection of Interstate Highways 244, 44 and U.S. Highway 66, one mile southwest of Kirkwood, Missouri. during the construction of the interchange, numerous artificial exposures of rocks of the middle Mississippian Meramecian Series were exposed. This provided an excellent opportunity for examining fresh exposures near the type Meramecian Series. The formations of the area were studied, and startigraphic [sic] sections were prepared from three of the more complete sections that were measured and described. The highway cuts expose complete sections of the Warsaw and Salem formations, and the lower part …

Lot Feeding Of Beef Cattle. 3. Facilities Required For A Feed Lot, W J O Wilkie

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MANY THINGS must be considered in planning a feed lot.

The site must be well chosen, fencing, gates and yards must be adequate for the cattle carried and feeding and watering facilities should be of a high standard.

Other things to consider are the provision of shelter and shade for the cattle and buildings for feed storage and other purposes.

Geology Of The Southwestern Part Of The Randolph Quadrangle, Utah-Wyoming, Steven C. Hansen May 1964

Geology Of The Southwestern Part Of The Randolph Quadrangle, Utah-Wyoming, Steven C. Hansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A detailed study of the southwestern part of the Randolph quadrangle was undertaken in view of the fact that Richardson (1941) mapped a large area of undifferentiated Ordovician rock. Therefore, the purposes of this investigation are: (1) to prepare a more detailed geologic map of the southwestern part of the Randolph quadrangle (Plate 1), (2) to describe the structure, stratigraphy, and geologic history of the area, and (3) to relate the geology to adjacent areas.

A Comparison Between The Direction Of Tornado Movement And The Associated 500 Mb. Level Wind Direction, Allen B. Johnson Jan 1964

A Comparison Between The Direction Of Tornado Movement And The Associated 500 Mb. Level Wind Direction, Allen B. Johnson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

An investigation to ( 1) determine the 500-milli-bar level weather patterns associated with tornadoes moving from northwest toward southeast and from southwest toward northeast and, (2) show the significance of the contrasts between the 500-mb. level weather patterns of the two tornado types. A very high relationship between the direction of the 500-mb. level winds and the tornado direction was substantiated by a coefficient of correlation of +0.88. The typical 500-mb. level low center associated with the northwest to southeast type tornado was located over Hudson Bay about 1300 miles north-northeast of the tornado area. The low center associated with …

Study Of The Ste. Genevieve Formation At Selected Localities In Southern Illinois And Western Kentucky, Mahlon Jack Apgar Reinhard Jan 1964

Study Of The Ste. Genevieve Formation At Selected Localities In Southern Illinois And Western Kentucky, Mahlon Jack Apgar Reinhard

Masters Theses

"The carbonate rocks of the Mississippian Ste. Genevieve Formation were studied megascopically in four quarries--Cave in Rock, Franklin, Three Rivers, and Fredonia Valley--within a small area of the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district and in a drill-core from the Cave in Rock Quarry. The rocks were studied microscopically in seventy-four thin sections prepared from samples from the quarries and the drill-core. The Ste. Genevieve Formation is typically an extremely oolitic, fragmentally fossiliferous limestone which is very light gray to white. The megascopic descriptions of the quarry exposures are presented as measured sections and columnar sections. A detailed log of the drill-core is …

Die Bedeutung Der Pleistozänen Vogelfaunen Der Höhlen Im Ungarischen Mittelgebirge, Tibor Farkas Jan 1964

Die Bedeutung Der Pleistozänen Vogelfaunen Der Höhlen Im Ungarischen Mittelgebirge, Tibor Farkas

International Journal of Speleology

In the present study, the fossil bird fauna of the caves of the Hungarian Middle Mountains is examined for evidence in support of the hypothesis that the Carpathian Basin may have served as a faunal refugee during the last Quaternary glacial period. As an introduction, the reasons for the refugee hypothesis, including paleobotanical and glacial theoretical aspects, are discussed. Since the first bird fossils of the cave fauna considered in this paper belong to the Würm I-II, the faunistic conditions of the Riss glacial period are not discussed in detail, The known faunas up to the Würm II are interstadial, …

Observations Sur L'Évolution Des Grottes, Albert Cavaillé Jan 1964

Observations Sur L'Évolution Des Grottes, Albert Cavaillé

International Journal of Speleology

In this note, which results from a paper published in France, the author defines the “karst system” formed by several successive levels, at the heart of a limestone mass: joints of surface feeding, vertical chimneys, galleries which are alternatively dry and full of water according to the season, a network of continually drowned clefts. He then studies modifications in this system resulting from internal causes, corrosion, filling and sedimentation, concretion. Then he shows how this evolution of the karst system may be modified by general conditions: geology, tectonics, geography with the losses, resurgences and the role of surface formations. The …

Firebreaks Without Erosion : Hints To Prevent Firebreak Erosion, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1963

Firebreaks Without Erosion : Hints To Prevent Firebreak Erosion, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

AGRICULTURAL fire risks are now greater than they have been in the past and are steadily increasing with the advance of agriculture in Western Australia.

During the past 20 years the area of cleared arable land and the area under crop have more than doubled.

The area of established pasture is four times as great as it was. Pastures and crops are much more productive —and more liable to carry destructive fires than they were.

Hydrogeology Of Reservoir Sites In The Meramec River Basin, Missouri., John H. Anderson Jan 1963

Hydrogeology Of Reservoir Sites In The Meramec River Basin, Missouri., John H. Anderson

Masters Theses

"Governmental and private agencies have proposed construction of multiple purpose dams in the Meramec River Basin for flood control, conservation, recreation and possible power development. Evaluation of the effects of reservoirs created by these dams on ground water conditions has not been published. Study of possible effects led to the thesis that prediction of changes in ground water conditions could be made.

Several limited applications of ground water geology techniques to the problem of reservoir-ground water relations were studied; no thorough previous studies were found. Apparently, complete studies have not been undertaken by even the larger agencies.

Inspection of the …

Sedimentary Petrography And Environments Of Deposition Of The Plattin Group, Cliffdale Hollow, Jefferson County, Missouri., Narendra M. Naiknimbalkar Jan 1963

Sedimentary Petrography And Environments Of Deposition Of The Plattin Group, Cliffdale Hollow, Jefferson County, Missouri., Narendra M. Naiknimbalkar

Masters Theses

"Petrographic and depositional environments studies were completed on selected Plattin Limestone rock-samples from the Drill-cores of Cliffdale Hollow area, Jefferson County, Missouri.

Petrographic analysis of forty-four thin sections and the detailed megascopic study of the samples revealed the different types of limestone rocks which were classified on the basis of Folk's (1959) Carbonate Classification. As to the environments of deposition of the Plattin Limestone determined by petrographic study, it has been concluded that this environment was one of low to medium agitation and low to medium organic activity.

Chemical analysis of the Plattin Limestone samples revealed the presence of the …

Geology Of The Northern Half Of The Ellington Quadrangle Missouri., Robert Charles. Thornton Jan 1963

Geology Of The Northern Half Of The Ellington Quadrangle Missouri., Robert Charles. Thornton

Masters Theses

"Geologic mapping has been completed for the northern half of the Ellington Quadrangle, Missouri. Rocks exposed in the thesis area are Precambrian and Paleozoic in age. The Precambrian rocks are granites and felsite. The Paleozoic rocks include the Potosi and Eminence Formations, of Upper Cambrian age, and the Gasconade Formation of Ordovician age. Distinction between the Potosi and Eminence Formations is difficult because of conformable and transitional relationships. In the thesis area sufficient evidence was available to separate the dolomites of the Potosi and Eminence as mappable units. This mapping should be useful as a basis for more detailed geologic …

Geology Of The Sedillo-Cedro Canyon Area, Bernallio County, New Mexico, Bert Norman Brown Jun 1962

Geology Of The Sedillo-Cedro Canyon Area, Bernallio County, New Mexico, Bert Norman Brown

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This report was undertaken primarily as a study of Pennsylvanian strata which crop out in the Sedillo-Cedro Canyon area. The subdivision of the Madera formation as proposed by Read and others (1944) was adopted for purposes of mapping. This subdivision is based on a dominance of either limestone or clastic rocks in the formation.

The writer was unable to measure a Pennsylvanian section in the field due to thickness changes, facies gradations, and faults which were often concealed by dense soil cover. However, by visually traversing the area on aerial photographs using arbitrarily chosen zones, estimated thicknesses for the members …

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler May 1962

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler

Faculty Honor Lectures

Even in such a wide-ranging and eternally changing field as biology, a few statements about certain aspects can be made with a minimum likelihood of their being refuted. In this class are the following: No two lakes are identical. Any given lake is simultaneously many things to many people. A lake is never static. The influence of a lake reaches far beyond its shores.

Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, can be used to good advantage to exemplify the truth of these statements. It defies meaningful comparison with other lakes unless a mass of detailed statistics is employed. To the fisherman and water …

The investigation primarily concerns contemporary geomorphological features and processes in the Upper Indus Basin, Past work, and theories of the denudation chronology of the region are described, and the broad climatic and geological setting. The bulk of the work examines characteristics of weathering, slopes and mass-movements, glacial and fluvial features in the Biafo Gyang area of the Central Karakoram. The nature and role of glacier surges and natural damming in the region are discussed. An effort is also made to support the central theme with background information and visual illustration not normally available, and a comprehensive regional bibliography is provided. …

Early Records Of Some Mammals From Nebraska, J. Knox Jones Jr. Jan 1962

Early Records Of Some Mammals From Nebraska, J. Knox Jones Jr.

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum (1924–2023)

Ten species of Recent mammals that formerly occurred in Nebraska have been extirpated there by European man. Surprisingly few specimens of the species concerned are preserved in museum collections. Perusal of a representative segment of the historical literature pertaining to Nebraska has revealed records of occurrence of most of the extirpated species that provide a basis for estimating the former distribution of each in the State.

Seismic Investigation Of Flint Clay Deposits In East Central Missouri, Roland D. Dayley Jan 1962

Seismic Investigation Of Flint Clay Deposits In East Central Missouri, Roland D. Dayley

Masters Theses

"Seismic refraction surveys were conducted in several localities within the east central Missouri clay districts in order to determine the applicability and economy of this method as a clay exploration tool. Results of these surveys revealed that the sink-type clay deposits possess lithologic and structural characteristics that lend themselves favorably to this method of exploration.

Seismic records obtained from profiles shot across known deposits indicate that several factors other than velocity contrast serve to produce apparent seismic anomalies.

Some unforeseen time loss and expense was encountered because of malfunctions of the seismic equipment employed, which necessitated the purchase and installation …

Mineral Paragenesis And Trace Element Distribution In The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Richard D. Hagni Jan 1962

Mineral Paragenesis And Trace Element Distribution In The Tri-State Zinc-Lead District Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Richard D. Hagni

Doctoral Dissertations

"A review of the literature pertaining to the mineral paragenesis and trace element distribution in the Tri-State zinc-lead district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma revealed inconsistencies in observation and in interpretation and divergent hypotheses regarding the origin of the ores. In an attempt to reconcile the data collected by many investigators over nearly three-quarters of a century, the writer observed working faces in 37 mines, collected over 2,000 specimens for binocular examination and prepared and studied 110 polished surfaces and 60 thin sections of the ores and associated rocks utilizing mineralographic, petrographic, and x-ray techniques. This detailed study resulted in …
