Réponses Locomotrices Du Poisson Cavernicole Astyanax Jordani (Pisces, Characidae) À Des Signaux Périodiques Et Apériodiques De Lumière Et De Température, G. Thines, M. Weyers

International Journal of Speleology

The locomotory activity of adult cave fishes Astyanax jordani was recorded in isolation in the following light and temperature conditions: constant conditions (100 Lx - 20°C), in a light cycle (LD:11/11 -10 Lx -100 Lx) and in a temperature cycle (11/11; 17/20, 19/22, 20/23, 27/30 °C). All longitudinal time series extended for a minimum of 30 days. Results show: (1) That no circadian regulation appears in constant conditions; (2) that passive entrainment occurs in LD (Amplitude: 90 Lx) and in periodic temperature conditions (Amplitude: 3°C). The entrainment effect damps out and varies individually; (3) that the mean activity increases with …

Niveaux De Base Actuels Dans Les Principaux Canyons Du Languedoc Oriental Et Des Plans De Provence, G. Fabre, J. Nicod

International Journal of Speleology

In a karstic country cut by a canyon in which runs an allogenic river, there are several base levels (karstic, fluvial...); chiefly if the limestones develop greatly under the bottom of the gorge. The difficulty of characterizing them appears in all the definitions given. From the example of the three most important canyons of the Eastern Bas Languedoc (South-East of France) and with the different geological controls (s.l.) one ascertains that at present: a) When an allogenic and surface river is perennial without important loss there is a total connection between fluvial level and karstic base level. b) When an …

The Parmo De Berlin, Colombia: A Study Of Water Resources In A Rural Andean Community, Daniel Bodo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. The quality of surface waters, as revealed through analysis …

Growth-Form-Analysis And Paleoecology Of The Corals Of The Lower Mississippian Lodgepole Formation, Bear River Range, North-Central Utah, Judith M. Miller May 1977

Growth-Form-Analysis And Paleoecology Of The Corals Of The Lower Mississippian Lodgepole Formation, Bear River Range, North-Central Utah, Judith M. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Mississippian (Kinderhookian-Osagean) Lodgepole Formation contains a diverse fossil assemblage. Taxa present include brachiopods, crinoids, gastropods, cephalopods, trilobites and corals. Corals and associated fauna were collected from four localities within the Bear River Range. These are, from north to south, Beirdneau Hollow, Spring Hollow, Leatham Hollow and Porcupine Dam. The well-preserved tabulate and rugose (compound and solitary) corals exhibit a high degree of morphologic variability. The colonial corals of the Lodgepole Formation (particularly Lithostrotionella, Syringopora) exhibit a morphologic gradient from platy to hemispherical forms. The six morphologic categories of colonial corals discussed in this study are identified by mean …

Using A Prediction Model In Forecasting Appeals, Paul A. Rake Apr 1977

Using A Prediction Model In Forecasting Appeals, Paul A. Rake

IUSTITIA

Following the 1972 reorganization of the Indiana Court of Appeals into three panels serving defined geographical districts, the Court soon found itself floundering with too many unevenly distributed cases. Lacking a sufficient base of statistical data from which to formulate a plan to cope with the problem, various proposals, including redistricting the court, adding more judges, and developing a more sophisticated staff research, could not be measured for effectiveness or advisability.

In response to these problems, the Court developed a project to deal with the future caseload by constructing a regression model to predict appeals. This model generated estimates of …

Surface Area Measurements And Seasonal Variation Of Selected New Mexico Lakes, Mike Edwin White Apr 1977

Surface Area Measurements And Seasonal Variation Of Selected New Mexico Lakes, Mike Edwin White

Geography ETDs

This research compares the ability of various areal measuring techniques to accurately measure reservoir surface area from Landsat imagery. Water volume and surface area data obtained from reservoir management agencies for six New Mexico reservoirs were used as test data. Acreage estimates obtained from a dot grid, an electronic planimeter, a 32-level color density slicer and a 16-level black and white density slicer, were compared to the test data. Surface area measurements were taken from Landsat infrared images by these devices at scales of 1:1,000,000, 1:500,000 and 1:250,000. The acreage estimates were obtained for four seasons during 1973. The results …

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea was divided along lines established for the preparitory Conference. The plenary consisted of all delegates of all delegations and was generally used to make formal what had already been negotiated in closed sessions. In the fifth session, it took on a new function as a forum for debating in closed session proposed articles on dispute settlement. In the future, it will look at drafts of the preamble and final clauses to the Convention. Each of three primary committees was empowered with specific issues to consider, again stemming from the …

Environmental Perception In Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico, Howard Graham Crow Ii Apr 1977

Environmental Perception In Bandelier National Monument, New Mexico, Howard Graham Crow Ii

Geography ETDs

The focus of this study was on visitor satisfaction in a natural area, as opposed to alternative use such as preservation of the area, with little or no visitor access. Visitor satisfaction can be approached through studies in environmental perception. Such studies integrate work in psychology, philosophy, and geography. This author sought to determine whether or not more precise information about the perceptual basis for visitor satisfaction in a natural area could be obtained through survey research. Bandelier National Monument served as a useful laboratory for carrying out this research.

Data collection was by a survey technique. A detailed questionnaire …

Successive Month Temperature Relationships For Twin Cities, 1820-1974, Charles J. Fisk Jan 1977

Successive Month Temperature Relationships For Twin Cities, 1820-1974, Charles J. Fisk

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Using a five category classification scheme of mean monthly temperatures, the long-term ( 1820-1974) relationships between Minneapolis-St. Paul successive months' temperatures were analyzed . Results show predominance of two-month persistence over two-month breaks in classification . Strong above norma11 and below normal persistence tendencies are revealed, particularly in summer and early fall sequences. In contrast, two month breaks in classification appear in spring and fall sequences. This emphasizes the uneven progression of warming (cooling) that occasionally occurs between winter (summer) and summer (winter). Overall, strongest month-to-month association was for August-September, weakest for April-May .

Distortion In Map Projections: Its Effect On The Interpretation Of Maritime Boundaries And Related Activities, Austin H. Gedney Iii Jan 1977

Distortion In Map Projections: Its Effect On The Interpretation Of Maritime Boundaries And Related Activities, Austin H. Gedney Iii

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Distortion inherent in map projections can effect the delimitation of maritime boundaries. Thirty-nine maps of three study areas representative of the world were drawn, and the envelope and median line offshore boundaries were constructed on them. Every country's enclosed boundary area was measure in each of the four categories of distortion; equivalency, conformality, equidistance and constant bearing. The result revealed a number of projections that indicate a wide range of usefulness depending on the degree of deformation and preservation of properties for a particular study area.

Hydrology And Water Quality In The Central Kentucky Karst: Phase 1, James F. Quinlan, Donald R. Rowe

KWRRI Research Reports

Study of springs and cave streams has shown that heavy metal-rich effluent from a wastewater treatment plant can be traced to Hidden River Cave (beneath the city of Horse Cave) and thence 4 to 5 miles north to a group of 39 springs at 14 locations along a 5-mile reach of Green River. Nickel, chromium, copper and zinc in these effluent-bearing springs are in concentrations of as much as 30 times greater than other springs upstream and downstream from this reach, 20 times greater than the Green River, and 60 times greater than in shallow domestic wells between Horse Cave …

The Prediction Of The Temperature Of Small Clear Streams, Robert Nelson Crittenden Jan 1977

The Prediction Of The Temperature Of Small Clear Streams, Robert Nelson Crittenden

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A theoretical energy balance model was used to predict water temperatures in small clear streams which have limited heat transfer due to ground water flow. The model was designed for application to coastal streams in central California to determine reservoir release policies that would improve downstream salmon habitat by altering stream temperatures. The results of the model are predicted to be applicable to small clear streams in moderately calm and humid areas throughout the temperate zone, where the winters are not prolonged, and where there is little ground Hater flow.. It predicts that all turbulently flowing wateracts ,. identically. It …

A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima Jan 1977

A Sedimentological Study Of Modern And Ancient Lacustrine Environments At Michael Bay, Lake Huron, Lindsay D. Nakashima

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Modern and ancient environments associated with Lakes Algoma and Huron were studied according to attributes of stratigraphy, sediment texture, parameters, sediment size distribution, bedforms, and primary sedimentary structures. Results from a computation of wave refraction diagrams and from an examination of the wave climate characteristics indicate that the modern embayment is low energy.

A sediment texture comparison between modern and ancient environments indicates that higher energy pervailed in the ancient environment relative to the present day environment. The cobble and gravel sediments as well as an extensive belt of foredunes preserved in the ancient environment are evidence of this high …
