The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas Apr 1987

The Military Sealift Command: Their Potential Role In Providing Military Logistic Support To The Persian Gulf, Kevin W. Nicholas

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The ultimate goal of the U.S. Maritime Strategy is to project power into all the oceans of the world. By projecting power over this vast a geographic area, the U.S. is able to provide a deterrent force that will inhibit the development of a significant hostile military action, anywhere in the world. The ability to support this global peacekeeping force hinges on the capability of the U.S. to provide a strong logistic support organization. From a waterborne perspective, the Indian Ocean is the one geographic area of the world that presents the greatest logistic challenge. The U.S. Navy and the …

The Exclusive Economic Zone: The Impact Of The 1982 Law Of The Sea Treaty On Worldwide U.S. Naval Operations, John C. Meyer Jan 1987

The Exclusive Economic Zone: The Impact Of The 1982 Law Of The Sea Treaty On Worldwide U.S. Naval Operations, John C. Meyer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The focus of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III) was on the development of an international legal regime for the peaceful use of the world's oceans. The maritime powers, particularly the United States, viewed this new regime in terms of preserving traditional high seas freedom of navigation and overflight, and limiting expanding coastal state claims over their adjacent water and airspace. Developing countries, emerging from a period of decolonization, sought to enhance their security and gain economic benefit from this new legal regime, through the seaward extension of claims to jurisdiction over what …

Boston-Halifax Ferry Service: Capturing An Existing Market, Melissa P. Madeira Jan 1987

Boston-Halifax Ferry Service: Capturing An Existing Market, Melissa P. Madeira

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The viability of a Boston to Halifax ferry service is examined in light of the existing vehicle traffic entering that Province from the United States. The current cruise ship industry is outlined and the role which the Port of Boston plays in this market describes the Port's incentive for instituting such a ferry service. Statistics provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism show that a significant volume of vehicle traffic which enters Nova Scotia originates at points in the United States which are to the south and west of Boston. The existence of this traffic supports the assumption that …

Maritime Boundaries Between Trinidad And Tobago/Venezuela/Barbados And Grenada - Its Impact On Offshore Oil, Patty Marajh Jan 1987

Maritime Boundaries Between Trinidad And Tobago/Venezuela/Barbados And Grenada - Its Impact On Offshore Oil, Patty Marajh

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The future of the economy of Trinidad and Tobago is heavily dependent upon the exploitation of the hydrocarbon resources in its continental shelf. Trinidad's geographical proximity to the Venezuelan mainland is relevant because both states share the same continental shelf in areas not delimited by the 1942 gulf of Paria Treaty. The continental shelves of Barbados and Grenada also intersect and these areas have not been delimited and defined by any agreement. The current expansion of the exploration and exploitation of crude oil and natural gas have raised several problems within recent years. This thesis will focus attention to the …

An Analysis Of The Massachusetts Inshore Lobster Fishery, Peter Robertson Hoar Jan 1987

An Analysis Of The Massachusetts Inshore Lobster Fishery, Peter Robertson Hoar

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the limited entry alternative of fishery management by examining the history of a particular limited entry scheme: the Massachusetts inshore commercial lobster fishery license limitation law. A review was made of existing limited entry theory, followed by a description of limited entry programs extant in U.S. fisheries. The legislative and political histories of the Massachusetts lobster fishery limited entry program was then examined. The limited entry law was then analyzed by comparing what actually occurred with what is supposed to occur according to limited entry theory. A quantitative analysis of changes in …

Objectives Of The Soviet Merchant Marine, James T. Sharp Jan 1987

Objectives Of The Soviet Merchant Marine, James T. Sharp

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In the years since the end of the Second World War, no aspect of merchant shipping has created greater controversy than the phenomenal growth of the merchant fleet of the Soviet Union. Starting in 1945 with a makeshift fleet that was a motley collection of obsolete vessels, ships received as reparations from the defeated Axis nations and Lend-Lease Liberty ships, the Soviets have fashioned a modern, efficient merchant marine that is currently second in the world in numbers of ships and sixth in deadweight tonnage. Employed as a powerful instrument of the Soviet state, this fleet now competes effectively with …

Lithologic Controls On Karst Groundwater Flow, Lost River Groundwater Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, Christopher Groves Jan 1987

Lithologic Controls On Karst Groundwater Flow, Lost River Groundwater Basin, Warren County, Kentucky, Christopher Groves

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Lost River Groundwater Drainage Basin in Warren County, Kentucky, is a karst drainage system encompassing 55 square miles (143 square kilometers) developed within the Mississippian St. Louis and Ste. Genevieve Limestones. Near the contact between these two formations are two bedded chert units, the Lost River Chert Bed (Elrod, 1899) within the Ste. Genevieve and the Corydon Chert Member (Woodson, 1983) of the St. Louis, which appear to be perching layers to shallow karst groundwater flow. Groundwater may be seen flowing on top of these beds in various cave streams and at swallets and springs throughout the basin.

An Inventory And Condition Survey Of Rangelands In The Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, A L. Payne, G F. Spencer, P J. Curry

Technical Bulletins

The inventory and condition survey of rangelands in the Carnarvon Basin, undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA) between 1980 and 1982, describes and maps the natural resources of the region’s pastoral leasehold land. This survey report provides a baseline record of the existence and condition of the natural area’s resources, to assist with the planning and implementation of land management practices. The report identified and described the condition of soils, landforms, vegetation, habitat, ecosystems, and declared plants and animals. It also assessed the impact of pastoralism and made land management recommendations. The area surveyed covers …

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus Jan 1987

Seepage Interceptor Drains And Topsoil Salinity, T R. Negus

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Department of Agriculture established 121 trials in its Narrogin advisory district starting in 1972 to measure the effect of bulldozer and grader built seepage interceptor banks and drains on the topsoil salinity of the land downslope of them.

After 14 years of moniterin, there was no evidence that seepage interceptor drains and banks reduced the top soil salinity on 10 of the 11 sites in the Pingelly, Brookton and Wickepin Shires.

Stable Isotope Compositions Of Fossil Mollusks From Southern California: Evidence For A Cool Last Interglacial Ocean, Daniel R. Muhs, T. Kurtis Kyser Jan 1987

Stable Isotope Compositions Of Fossil Mollusks From Southern California: Evidence For A Cool Last Interglacial Ocean, Daniel R. Muhs, T. Kurtis Kyser

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Stable isotope compositions have been determined for modem mullusks and fossil mollusks collected from uplied marine terraces at three l d t i e s in southern California. By using a paleocliatic model that decouples the temperature and ice-volume signals in ocean water, ocean-water temperatures off southern California are estimated to have been -3.8 °C at ~85 ka, -3.0 °C at ~107 ka, and -2.2 °C at ~125 ka relative to present temperature. These results indicate rather cool conditions during the peak of the last interglacial stage at 125 ka and conflict with results from terrace faunal studies that suggest …

Coral Reef To Eolianite Transition In The Pleistocene Rocks Of Great Inagua, Bahamas, Brian White, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Great Inagua Island, the southernmost of the chain of Bahamian islands, lies approximately 100 km northeast of the eastern tip of Cuba. This paper reports the results of reconnaissance geologic field work conducted on Great Inagua Island in January, 1985, and of more detailed observations made in January, 1986, near Matthew Town, between South West Point and Devil's Point.

Botanical Evidence For Holocene Movement Of Rock Streams In Arkansas, S. Marie Lookingbill, Malcolm K. Cleaveland, Margaret J. Guccione Jan 1987

Botanical Evidence For Holocene Movement Of Rock Streams In Arkansas, S. Marie Lookingbill, Malcolm K. Cleaveland, Margaret J. Guccione

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Botanical studies of rock streams on the western half of Rich Mountain and on the north slope of Mt. Magazine in Arkansas question the common presumption that such streams require periglacial conditions to form, and are now inactive relict features in this area. Trees along the margins of the streams examined show abundant evidence of trauma resulting from Late Holocene movement, in the form of bent and tilted stems. Cross sections of trees demonstrate marked eccentric growth associated with tilting and cambial trauma associated with corrasion by rocks. That this damage is not the result of excessive snow loading is …

Les Mésaventures Des Sources De L'Estavelle Et De L'Inversac En Languedoc Méditerranéen, Bernard Gèze Jan 1987

Les Mésaventures Des Sources De L'Estavelle Et De L'Inversac En Languedoc Méditerranéen, Bernard Gèze

International Journal of Speleology

The Estavelle and the Inversac are two celebrated springs in the Mediterranean Languedoc (South of France). Unfortunately, the first one has been chosen as a type for the karstic cavities alternatively absorbing or discharging the waters, according to the season, which has never been the case. On the opposite, the second one can be taken as model for this alternation as swallow hole or emergence.

Relationships Between The Internal And External Evolution Of The Monte Cucco Karst Complex, Umbria, Central Italy, Fausto Guzzetti Jan 1987

Relationships Between The Internal And External Evolution Of The Monte Cucco Karst Complex, Umbria, Central Italy, Fausto Guzzetti

International Journal of Speleology

The relationships between the internal and external evolution of the Mt. Cucco karst complex are studied. A classic set of equations, involving the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide, originated at depth in an evaporitic formation, is used to explain the presence of massive gypsum deposits in the Mt. Cucco and the Faggeto Tondo caves. The distribution and the morphology of more than 30 caves in the system, the presence of gypsum, always located along faults, and the presence of broken stalactites and columns, suggest that the evolution of the karst system has been controlled by tectonic movements. Relationships between the development …

Genesis Of Marine Terrace Soils, Barbados, West Indies: Evidence From Mineralogy And Geochemistry, Daniel R. Muhs, Russell C. Crittenden, John N. Rosholt, Charles A. Bush, Kathleen C. Stewart Jan 1987

Genesis Of Marine Terrace Soils, Barbados, West Indies: Evidence From Mineralogy And Geochemistry, Daniel R. Muhs, Russell C. Crittenden, John N. Rosholt, Charles A. Bush, Kathleen C. Stewart

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Well-developed, clay-rich soils dominated by interstratified kaolinite-smectite are found on the uplifted coral reef terraces on the island of Barbados. The reef limestone is unlikely to have been the soil parent material however, because it is 98 per cent CaCO, and geomorphic evidence argues against the 20 m of reef solution required to produce the soils by this process. The mineralogy of the sand, silt, and clay fractions of the soils, and trace element geochemistry, suggest that aeolian materials carried on the trade winds from Africa, volcanic ash from the island of St. Vincent, and quartz from Tertiary bedrock on …

Scarcity-Induced Conflict: The Lebanese-Israeli Conflict Over Water, Hussein A. Amery Jan 1987

Scarcity-Induced Conflict: The Lebanese-Israeli Conflict Over Water, Hussein A. Amery

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis sets out to determine possible links between the depleting water resources in Israel and the country’s hegemony over the water-rich area of south Lebanon. The early Zionist and later Israeli leaders have coveted the Litani river of Lebanon, to which Israel has had access since 1978. Israel’s replenishable water stock is being fully utilized. This fact is the basis of the theoretical motif of the thesis, namely the state conflict induced by resource scarcity. Thus conflict theory is discussed and a model of conflict process is derived.

Also discussed are 1) the reasons for the high water consumption …

An Assessment And Comparison Of Hazardous Waste Management Hessen, Frg And Ontario, Canada, Elaine F. Collis Jan 1987

An Assessment And Comparison Of Hazardous Waste Management Hessen, Frg And Ontario, Canada, Elaine F. Collis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Hazardous waste management has recently become an issue of great concern for governments in industrialized countries. In spite of this, no one country has established a successful framework which guarantees the safe handling and disposal of hazardous wastes. The ideal system would generate no hazardous wastes in the first place but this, of course, is wishful thinking for highly industrialized societies. The next best or “preferred” solution is a system which emphasized reduction and recycling of hazardous wastes. The existing waste management systems in the world today, however, almost exclusively emphasize treatment and disposal. This thesis assesses the hazardous waste …

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Snow Accumulation In The Central Karakoram, Northern Pakistan, Cameron Parker Wake Jan 1987

Spatial And Temporal Variation Of Snow Accumulation In The Central Karakoram, Northern Pakistan, Cameron Parker Wake

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Runoff from the Upper Indus Basin depends upon snowfall at high elevations in the northern mountains of Pakistan. However, very little is known concerning the amount of snowfall in the major source area, the high Karakoram, or its spatial and temporal distribution. Glaciers contain well preserved records of snow accumulation and provide a unique tool for retrieving data. A number of studies on temperate and tropical glaciers indicate that variations in chemical content and microparticle concentrations delineates seasonal stratigraphy. In addition, the chemical record of the snowpack can usually be used to determine the source of precipitation. Field work in …

The Effect Of Particle Size On Phosphate Adsorption By Fluvial Sediment, Michael F.A. Stone Jan 1987

The Effect Of Particle Size On Phosphate Adsorption By Fluvial Sediment, Michael F.A. Stone

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The quantitative phosphate adsorption behaviour of ten grain size fractions of an experimental sediment (silica sand) and fluvial sediment from two Southwestern Ontario rivers, were evaluated and compared to determine the effect of particle size on phosphate absorption. In addition, the elemental composition of grain size fractions of fluvial sediment were determined by X-Ray fluorescence spectrometry to study the combined effect of particle size and sediment geochemical composition on phosphate adsorption. Results of the adsorption studies indicate that phosphate adsorption per unit mass increases in non-linear fashion with decreasing grain size. The capacity of grain size fractions of silica sand …

The Incorporation Of Environmental Perception Information Into Wilderness Park Safety Planning, Thomas Craig Waldichuk Jan 1987

The Incorporation Of Environmental Perception Information Into Wilderness Park Safety Planning, Thomas Craig Waldichuk

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The park safety planning process currently in use limits users’ inputs to accident statistics. It would be better to more accurately anticipate accident-prone locations and to take preventative measures. A planning methodology is proposed which integrates the safety perceptions of park users into the decision-making for locating facilities and services: the Recreation Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) serves as a systematic planning guide for such decision-making and is compatible with park policy and objectives. Applications to Garibaldi Provincial Park, British Columbia, and statistical and cartographic analyses of 273 questionnaires returned from there, indicate that park users’ perceptions can be advantageously incorporated into …

Carbonate Surface Solution In The Classical Karst, Franco Cucchi, Fabio Forti, Furio Finocchiaro Jan 1987

Carbonate Surface Solution In The Classical Karst, Franco Cucchi, Fabio Forti, Furio Finocchiaro

International Journal of Speleology

The current research on the dissolution of carbonate rocks in the Karst of Trieste indicates that the average degradation of surfaces exposed to atmospheric agents is 0.028 mm/year with an average rainfall of 1350 mm. The maximum levels (0.031 mm/year) correspond to micro-crystalline limestones, the minimum values (0.014 mm/year) to dolomites.

Irrigation Water Use In Southern Ontario, Kenneth Iain Macdonald Jan 1987

Irrigation Water Use In Southern Ontario, Kenneth Iain Macdonald

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The appreciation of water as a finite resource has engendered a renewed research interest in producing effective water management policies and practices in order to reduce both current and potential demands on existing reserves. Unfortunately, such research, especially in the humid regions of North America, has concentrated on water use in urban areas and has neglected the use of water in irrigation agriculture; even though irrigation is a major consumptive use of water in many localized areas. In addition, research has been dominated by physical, technological and economic viewpoints at the expense of an understanding of the human element in …

Paleoenvironmental Data For N. W. Georgia, U.S.A., From Fossils In Cave Speleothems, George A. Brook, Eugene P. Keferl, Rudy J. Nickmann Jan 1987

Paleoenvironmental Data For N. W. Georgia, U.S.A., From Fossils In Cave Speleothems, George A. Brook, Eugene P. Keferl, Rudy J. Nickmann

International Journal of Speleology

Pollen grains and gastropod shells in two speleothems from Red Spider Cave, Georgia indicate that ca. 10,000 yr B.P. the vegetation near the cave was Mixed Mesophytic Forest. Conditions were cooler and moister than today and a shallow pond existed in the doline above the cave. As these findings support palynologic evidence from nearby pond sites it is clear that cave speleothems are a potential source of paleoecological data to ca. 350,000 yr. B.P.

Spatial And Temporal Characteristics Of Surface Air Temperature For Portland, Oregon, Li-Min Yang Jan 1987

Spatial And Temporal Characteristics Of Surface Air Temperature For Portland, Oregon, Li-Min Yang

Dissertations and Theses

This study examines the spatial and temporal characteristics of the surface air temperature in Portland, Oregon. Spatial temperature patterns indicate that the dominant control factors on seasonal temperature distribution are local topography, elevation, and urban-rural differences in surface structure. A heat island exists in the Portland area; the intensity of the heat island rang€s from 4° to 10° F, and varies throughout the year. The strongest heat island is found in the July minimum temperature. Temperature distribution in Portland and the adjacent area is affected by winds and rainy conditions, but less influenced under overcast skies. The long-term temperature over …
