Geology In The Vicinity Of The City Of Fossil, Wheeler County, North-Central Oregon, Patrick W. Riseley Jun 1989

Geology In The Vicinity Of The City Of Fossil, Wheeler County, North-Central Oregon, Patrick W. Riseley

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The area of study is located on the north flank of the northeast-southwest trending Blue Mountains Anticlinorium in north-central Oregon. The primary geologic problems investigated were: 1) the age and stratigraphic position of leaf-bearing tufts mapped as Oligo-Miocene John Day Formation but surrounded by andesitic basalts of the Eo-Oligocene Clarno Formation, 2) the age of "olivine basalt" mapped as John Day Formation by some workers but referred to the Clarno Formation by others, and 3) the petroleum potential of the Fossil area.

To resolve these three problems I mapped a 25 square mile area surrounding Fossil at 1 :24,000 scale. …

Recent Geologic History Of Mud-Dominated Sediments In Hillsborough Bay, Florida - Phase I Report, Gregg R. Brooks, Larry J. Doyle

Reports

The primary objective of this project, one phase of a potentially larger investigation on sediments of Hillsborough Bay, was to determine vertical distribution patterns of mud-dominated sediments. Vertical distribution patterns represent the recent geologic history of the study area. For this project the term 'recent geologic history' refers to the past several thousand years, or the period since being flooded by the Holocene rise of sea level.

Geographic Information Systems, Data, And Water Resources, Dwight A. Brown, Philip J. Gersmehl

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT-We evaluate three data handling methods for use in a GIS analysis of land-cover change impacts on runoff. A universe of 2560 point samples is analyzed to provide runoff calculations that would se1:7e _as a comparison base to evaluate different attribute logic systems. The attribute logics ~e evaluate are two va~1at1ons of tag and one of count. We chose a two by five mile area of Dakota County, Mmnesota as the test site, and prepared raster GIS maps of soil hydrologic groups and two plausible land covers. The count 1:1~thod for handling the generalization of data produced results that were …

Origin And Developmental History Of Minnesota Lakes, H. E. Wright Jr. Jan 1989

Origin And Developmental History Of Minnesota Lakes, H. E. Wright Jr.

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT-Most lakes in Minnesota owe their origin directly or indirectly to glacial deposition or erosion 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The lakes' shapes have since been modified by waves and currents near the shores and by the deposition of sediment off-shore-principally the sediment produced by growth of algae and other organisms. This sediment is a receptacle for pollen grains blown into the lake from the surrounding vegetation, and the stratigraphic succession of pollen grains records the postglacial vegetational and thus climatic history of the area. The sediment also preserves the fossils of microorganisms that reveal by their chemical composition the …

Formulation Of A Management Scheme For The Swordfish Fishery Of The Eastern Caribbean, Harold F. Upton Jan 1989

Formulation Of A Management Scheme For The Swordfish Fishery Of The Eastern Caribbean, Harold F. Upton

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

During the 1983 season, two U.S. longline vessels initiated the first attempts at the commercial exploitation of swordfish in the Eastern Caribbean. In 1986, the number of U.S. vessels participating in the fishery surpassed 40 with landings of nearly two million pounds per season. The sudden influx of participants and technology to the region has resulted in a variety of user conflicts and associated policy issues. Major areas of concern involve the conservation of a heavily exploited resource and the distribution of benefits which accrue from resource exploitation among the resource-adjacent island states and U.S. fishing operations. This study examines …

North Carolina Ports: A Search For Identity, Clifford S. Sharpe Jan 1989

North Carolina Ports: A Search For Identity, Clifford S. Sharpe

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

North Carolina's development in colonial times and in the early stages of statehood was greatly affected by her coastline. An abundant coastline did not translate into an abundance of good ports, in fact, difficult coastal and inland navigation hampered early commercial development. North Carolina's barrier islands and numerous inlets served as a haven for pirates in colonial days, for privateers during the Revolution, and later defied the North's blockade during the Civil War. There were several attempts by individuals to encourage maritime trade in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Shortly after World War II the state mobilized to …

Geographical Constraints To Soviet Maritime Power, Brian Needham Jan 1989

Geographical Constraints To Soviet Maritime Power, Brian Needham

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The aim of this paper is to identify the geographical constraints to Soviet marine power, assess their impact and explore alternatives that may be considered to reduce their detrimental effects. The paper will provide a background by addressing the recent history, status and current missions of the Soviet Navy, which is the vehicle for maritime power. The nature of the geographical constraints will then be discussed before assessing individually the impacts on the four Soviet Fleets: Northern, Baltic, Black Sea, and Pacific. Finally, some alternatives will be explored to counter the vulnerability of maritime power to those geographic constraints. It …

Resources For Inventorying Plants In The Southeast Asian Tropics: Plans For The Future, J.S. Burley, P.F. Stevens, E.A. Wood

Biology Department Faculty Works

We aimed to cover two issues in this workshop; the third arose during the course of the discussion: 1. The need for an increased rate of collecting in the Southeast Asian tropical area (‘Malesia’ for short) if taxonomic decisions in the ‘Flora Malesiana’ and other taxonomic projects are to be soundly based and, more generally, if there are to be materials adequate for the future needs of taxonomy. 2. The likelihood that any attempt to increase collecting, or even simply to continue collecting at the present rate, without paying adequate attention to the distribution, mounting, and preservation of the specimens …

Endemismus In Der Flora Der Mongolei, V. I. Grubov

Erforschung biologischer Ressourcen der Mongolei / Exploration into the Biological Resources of Mongolia, ISSN 0440-1298
