Structure Contours On The Top And Base Of The M Bed, The Relationship Of Mineralization To Structures, And The Variation Of The M Bed Thickness In The Tri-State District, Missouri, Kansas And Oklahoma, Arvind A. Desai

Masters Theses

"Regional structure and thickness of a single horizon, the M bed, have been studied in the Tri-State district by picking the top and base of the M bed in the logs of 557 selected drill holes and contouring this data together with the aid of local detailed structural information available for individual mining fields. Structures determined from these data were compared to the positions of mined mineralization to determine the control of regional structure upon the localization of ore. Variations in the M bed thickness were compared to the positions of fields of mineralization to examine possible spatial relationships which …

Theory Of The Lunar Photoelectron Atmosphere, Hal Emerson Mccloud Jr. Jan 1966

Theory Of The Lunar Photoelectron Atmosphere, Hal Emerson Mccloud Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"By considering the mechanics of an electron projected into an arbitrary potential field together with Poisson's equation it is possible to set up a differential equation for the electrostatic potential. The equation may be integrated and the photoelectron density found as a function of height for four approximate models. A simple model based upon monoenergetic photons and monoenergetic electrons ejected vertically upward yields rough estimates of the parameters of interest. Another model takes into account the fact that the photoelectrons are ejected at all angles. A general model takes into account the illumination of the lunar surface by solar (black …

An Investigation Of The Control Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through The Inclusions Of Prefractures, William Joseph Kabeiseman Jan 1966

An Investigation Of The Control Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through The Inclusions Of Prefractures, William Joseph Kabeiseman

Doctoral Dissertations

"Among the methods for determining the in-situ state of stress within the earth’s crust, hydraulic fracturing has been and is receiving much attention. This method, in principle, measures stress directly with no delicate electronic equipment required nor knowledge of the elastic modulus of the material.

This dissertation investigates experimentally whether or not control of fracture orientation can be achieved by the introduction of circular and elliptical prefractures along with sand inclusions into cast hydrostone blocks which are hydraulically fractured. A mathematical model is presented and analytically solved for the stress condition associated with a circular crack containing fluid pressure with …

A second important objective was the determination of characteristics which might aid in the location of buried Precambrian hills. A final objective was the testing of the magnetic surface integration method for identification and determination of depth of buried Precambrian hills.

This investigation is limited to buried and resurrected Precambrian hills of the Central Ozarks. It is concerned primarily with the structure and stratigraphy of sediments adjacent …

Re-Evaporation Nuclei And Evaporation In A Wilson Cloud Chamber, James G. Smith Jan 1966

Re-Evaporation Nuclei And Evaporation In A Wilson Cloud Chamber, James G. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

"Experimental techniques are developed for observing droplet evaporation in the submicroscopic size range. An expansion-compression cloud chamber with an atmosphere of tank helium saturated with water vapor is employed. This work was undertaken with the aim of examining submicroscopic droplet behavior and the existence of re-evaporation nuclei, a form of memory effect.

The theories of evaporation and nucleation on submicroscopic drop residues were re-examined, and alterations which appear to be consistent with the results of this work were incorporated into the evaporation theory.

The observed continually decreasing evaporation rate with diminishing droplet size confirms the existence of re-evaporation nuclei, but …

Absolute Soft X-Ray Dosimetry For Radiation Chemistry Studies, Howard Sajon Joyner Jan 1966

Absolute Soft X-Ray Dosimetry For Radiation Chemistry Studies, Howard Sajon Joyner

Masters Theses

"A homogeneous, variable plate separation ion chamber consisting of a polyethylene body and employing flowing ethylene as the cavity gas has been designed and tested for the specification soft x-ray (<75kV) energy deposition in typical hydrocarbons. The variable plate separation feature provided primary data on the differential specific ionization originating within the cavity gas occupying the effective collector volume which is independent of inherent chamber inhomogeneities associated with the electrically conducting films comprizing the chamber electrodes. These data demonstrated that charged particle equilibrium is established within the first few ten thousandths of an inch in typical solid hydrocarbons irradiated with this class of sources. Comparison of this type of chamber with a fixed plate separation, static cavity gas mode of operation showed that the latter may predict dose rates with inherent errors exceeding 100%. With the quality of electronic readout accessories presently available, the variable plate separation chamber yielded dose rate data exhibiting a probable error of 3.8 percent (plus the unknown uncertainty in the literature data on the energy required to form an ion pair), and an ultimate limiting error of less than 2 percent appears feasible"--Abstract, page ii.

A Study Of The Development Of A Heuristic Program That Solves Symbolic Laplace Transformation Problems, Arthur E. Zackrison Jan 1966

A Study Of The Development Of A Heuristic Program That Solves Symbolic Laplace Transformation Problems, Arthur E. Zackrison

Masters Theses

"A medium-speed general purpose digital computer (IBM 1620 Model II) was programmed to solve symbolic Laplace transformation problems. Although the applied mathematician and modern engineer has many uses for the symbolic solution of a problem, the potential of symbolic manipulation by a computer has not yet been sufficiently developed to help them because of many problems. This paper discusses the program and based on the author’s experience with it’s [sic] performance, clarifies the position of several of these difficulties and reaches some conclusions concerning computer solution of such problems"--Abstract, page ii.

Two-Dimensional Seismic Model Studies, Joong Hee Chun Jan 1966

Two-Dimensional Seismic Model Studies, Joong Hee Chun

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research was to design and construct apparatus suitable for two-dimensional seismic model studies.

A new technique for two-dimensional seismic model testing was devised which allows wide application of the equipment. This enabled the author to place the source and receiver in any desired position on the model, thereby permitting the recording of seismic events as function of distance and depth at any position

Two simple geometric models were tested to demonstrate the experimental range of the apparatus designed. The recorded data were compared with theoretical predictions and were found to be in good agreement"--Abstract, page ii.

Origin And Factors Affecting Distribution Of Solid Oil In Mid-Western Missouri, Rafid Abdul-Halim Jasim Jan 1966

Origin And Factors Affecting Distribution Of Solid Oil In Mid-Western Missouri, Rafid Abdul-Halim Jasim

Masters Theses

"A textural analysis was made of the heavy oil-bearing sandstones in the Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) Warner and Bluejacket formations of mid-western Missouri in order to determine and compare their depositional environments.

Grains of the Bluejacket sandstones are smaller and more rounded than grains of the Warner sandstones. The Bluejacket sandstone is also better sorted than the Warner sandstone.

The Bluejacket sandstone is thin-bedded; the Warner is mostly massive-bedded. These differences in bedding between the two formations have affected distribution of oil in the area of study.

Both the Bluejacket and Warner sandstones are better sorted than the Warrensburg sandstones; the …

Cenozoic And Recent Lunulitiform Bryozoans Of The Gulf And Atlantic Coasts, Ronald Greeley

Doctoral Dissertations

"Free, cup-shaped colonies of cheilostomatous bryozoans, equipped with vibracula, are termed lunulitiform bryozoans. This group is found in sandy and calcareous Cenozoic deposits of the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains. Cupuliform bryozoans are taxonomically distinct from, but in many ways similar to, lunulitiform bryozoans; the two groups are frequently found together.

Known lunulitiform genera of the Gulf and Atlantic Coastal Plains are diagnosed and their species described: Lunulites Lamarck, fifteen species, one new; Oligotresium Gabb and Horn, six species, two new; Discoporella d'Orbigny, two species; Cupuladria Canu and Bassler, two species; Selenaria Busk, one species; Otionella Canu and Bassler, four …

Calculated Cohesive Energy Of The Ordered Copper-Gold Alloy Cu Au I, Richard W. Hannum Jan 1966

Calculated Cohesive Energy Of The Ordered Copper-Gold Alloy Cu Au I, Richard W. Hannum

Doctoral Dissertations

"The ordered alloy CuAu is the fifty atomic per cent alloy in the copper-gold system. It was observed by Johansson and Linde(1) and was one of the first ordered alloys to be studied by x-ray diffraction methods(Z, 3). Two ordered superlattices of CuAu are observed. CuAu I exists below 380° C and has a tetragonal structure which is a slight distortion of the face- centered cubic. It is very highly ordered, with all copper and all gold atoms in alternate (002) planes, as shown in Figure 2. CuAu II, which exists between 380° and 415° C, is orthorhombic in structure(4) …

Diffusional Drop Growth In A Supersaturated Atmosphere, John C. Carstens Jan 1966

Diffusional Drop Growth In A Supersaturated Atmosphere, John C. Carstens

Doctoral Dissertations

"The effect which a growing droplet has on the supersaturated atmosphere surrounding it is analyzed by assuming a macroscopic diffusional growth mechanism involving both heat and vapor. The problem is solved, for cloud-chamber conditions, first for very short times assuming a fixed radius, and then for longer times assuming the establishment of "quasi" steady-state conditions. Knowledge of the way in which droplet growth affects supersaturation is important in the evaluation of nucleation rates"--Abstract, page ii.

Stable Predictor-Corrector Methods For First Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Terrell Lester Carlson Jan 1966

Stable Predictor-Corrector Methods For First Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Terrell Lester Carlson

Masters Theses

"Because of the wide variety of differential equations, there seems to be no numerical method which will affect the solution best for all problems. Predictor-corrector methods have been developed which utilize more ordinates in the predictor and corrector equations in the search for a better method.

These methods are compared for stability and convergence with the well known methods of Milne, Adams, and Hamming"--Abstract, page ii.

The Mössbauer Effect In Bismuth Ferrate, Bruce A. Banks Jan 1966

The Mössbauer Effect In Bismuth Ferrate, Bruce A. Banks

Masters Theses

"The magnetic hyperfine structure of the Fe⁵⁷ nuclei in bismuth ferrate was investigated using the Mössbauer effect. A Mössbauer effect spectrometer was built with consideration given to the elimination of vibration and the optimizing of the source, absorber, and detector geometries to produce the largest fractional Mössbauer effect per fractional standard deviation. The internal magnetic field at the Fe nuclei in BiFeO₃ was determined to (482 ± 9) kilooersteds at room temperature"--Abstract, page ii.

Ecology And Distribution Of Foraminifers Of A Traverse In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Faiz Nassir Thomas Jan 1966

Ecology And Distribution Of Foraminifers Of A Traverse In The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Faiz Nassir Thomas

Masters Theses

"Foraminiferal populations have been analyzed from five bottom samples along a traverse in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, approximately 27⁰20' to 97⁰15' north latitude and 97⁰20' to 97⁰05' west longitude. Eighty-eight species and twenty-nine genera, belonging to eighteen families, were recorded. Species were identified and described.

Statistical studies indicate that probably five benthonic foraminiferal depth facies could be recognized in the area at the following approximate depths: 4 fathoms, 4-8 fathoms, 8-12 fathoms, 12-16 fathoms, and 16-20 fathoms. Determination of facies is based largely on the range of species. The frequency distribution of species of foraminifers was plotted against change …

Contribution À L'Etude De Bathynella D'Europe: Bathynella Natans Vejdovsky, Un Dilemme À Résoudre, Eugène Serban

International Journal of Speleology

After a minute study of the structure of the 8th male pereiopod in some Bathynella populations from Romania and England, the structure differences which were found allowed to identify two well individualized kinds of pereiopods; they were named type natans and type stammeri. Taking into account the striking differences between these two types, B. stammeri (Jakobi), which since 1954 is considered to be a subspecies of the natans species, was separated out of the species B. natans sensu Jakobi (1954). The populations understudied were collected in England and Romania, their minute study being the object of an other note, …

Algological Studies In The Cave Of Mátyás Mount, Budapest, Hungary, Lajos Hajdu Jan 1966

Algological Studies In The Cave Of Mátyás Mount, Budapest, Hungary, Lajos Hajdu

International Journal of Speleology

Experiments were designed to test the ability of the aphotic speleoenvironment to support algal growth. The first series contained gelatin cultures of Scenedesmus placed in the cave at different localities in order to establish whether or not the microhabitats have any particular effect on the multiplication of the algae. No differences were found in the cultures after a three month incubation period in the cave, which could be traced to influences of microenvironmental conditions. Chlorella cultures in sterile Knop’s solution showed measurable growth in the cave whereas if the cultures were installed into sterilized cave water or were shielded by …

Calcite-Aragonite Speleothems From A Hand-Dug Cave In Northeast Kansas, Frederic R. Siegel, Wakefield Dort Jr. Jan 1966

Calcite-Aragonite Speleothems From A Hand-Dug Cave In Northeast Kansas, Frederic R. Siegel, Wakefield Dort Jr.

International Journal of Speleology

Speleothems in the form of stalactites, linear stalactitic growths, flowstone, and crusts, from a hand-dug cave in Northeast Kansas (Sec. 2 NENW, T2S, R22E) are composed of calcite and aragonite. If the estimated age of the cave is correct, i.e., 150 to 200 years old, the stalactites have grown at a maximum rate of 0.20 to 0.15 millimetres per year along their vertical axes. All of the speleothems examined contain about one percent strontium (based on qualitative emission spectrograph analyses). Rate of supply and evaporation of the vadose waters may dictate whether aragonite or calcite is the polymorph that precipitates …

Contribution À La Systématique Des Stenasellinae D'Afrique (Crustacés, Asellotes), Guy Magniez Jan 1966

Contribution À La Systématique Des Stenasellinae D'Afrique (Crustacés, Asellotes), Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

From 1897 to 1962, many species have been described as belonging to the genus Stenasellus Dollfus. Among all these the forms from Central Africa and one of Western Africa are not conform to the generic description of Racovitza 1924 obliging us to institute two new genera, Metastenasellus and Parastenasellus. The archaeic Asellota belong to the genus Stenasellus Dollfus, Johannella Monod, Metastenasellus nov.gen. and Parastenasellus nov. gen. are thus grouped in a sub family of Stenasellinae and the relationship between the different groups has still to be explained.

Pelodrilus Bureschi Mich. 1924 (Oligochaeta Haplotaxidae Dans Les Grottes Du Banat (Roumanie), Francise Botea, Lazare Botoşaneanu Jan 1966

Pelodrilus Bureschi Mich. 1924 (Oligochaeta Haplotaxidae Dans Les Grottes Du Banat (Roumanie), Francise Botea, Lazare Botoşaneanu

International Journal of Speleology

Pelodrilus bureschi Mich., one of two species of limicolous oligochaetes strictly confined to a subterranean environment and previously known from several caves in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia, was recently found in three caves in the Banat Mountains, Romania. Examination of sexually mature worms showed that they are within the range of variability of P. bureschi and that there is no reason to describe a form peculiar to the caves of Banat. Pelodrilus has almost always been found in the mud or clay covering the bottom of pools of variable size, which are filled by periodic flooding of underground water courses. The …

International Journal of Speleology

A new species of Mideopsis (Nudomideopsis) motasi n. sp. coming from a well near Gorni-Ciflik, close to Belogradchik in NW Bulgaria, is described. For the structure of the palp it is distinguished from the other subterranean European species Mideopsis (Mideopsis (Nudomideopsis) longipalpis Szalay and Mideopsis (Nudomideopsis) fonticola Tanasachi et Orghidan and resembles some Japonese Mideopsis species found also in wells.

Remarques Sur L'Espèce Asellus Cavaticus Leydig (Crustacé Isopode Hypogé) Et Description D'Une Sous-Espèce Nouvelle, Jean-Paul Henry Jan 1966

Remarques Sur L'Espèce Asellus Cavaticus Leydig (Crustacé Isopode Hypogé) Et Description D'Une Sous-Espèce Nouvelle, Jean-Paul Henry

International Journal of Speleology

In Europe, Asellus cavaticus Leydig until 1963 was the only species known of a phyletic line that extended from Britain to Austria. Until the works of Racovitza in 1919 all the Asellus of the underground world were reported to this species, first known subterranean Asellus. The taxonomic criteria of Racovitza allowed to determine many subspecies. Later on Chappuis refuses to give names to the different encountered forms. Taking as type forms the individuals of the grotte de Sainte-Reine (Meurthe-et-Moselle), considered very similar to the original type forms, we think to be able to define a new subspecies puteanus for …

None of the mosses living in the caves developed sex organs.

Algae From The Cave Of Mátyás Mount, Budapest, Hungary, P. Palik Jan 1966

Algae From The Cave Of Mátyás Mount, Budapest, Hungary, P. Palik

International Journal of Speleology

Seven collections containing scrapings of speleoclay or samples from the cave waters were received from L. Hajdu and were cultured in light in a modified Knop’s solution. The cultures yielded 21 different algal taxa, of which five species belong to the Cyanophyta four to the Bacillariophycaea class of the Chrysophyta and twelve to the Chlorophyta. From the species distribution, the cave shows a similarity to the nearby cave of Pàlvolgy, namely both of them contained more than 50 per cent Chlorophyta. Among the Cyanophyta the occurrence of Baradlaia speluncaecola Palik is noteworthy. This species seems to be a true troglobitic …

All these species are trogloxenes.

Nouvelles Contributions À L'Ètude De Bathynella (Bathynella) Natans Vejd. Et Bathynella (Antrobathynella) Stammeri (Jakobi), Eugène Serban Jan 1966

Nouvelles Contributions À L'Ètude De Bathynella (Bathynella) Natans Vejd. Et Bathynella (Antrobathynella) Stammeri (Jakobi), Eugène Serban

International Journal of Speleology

In an earlier paper the author separated Bathynella stammeri (Jakobi) (formerly considered a subspecies) from B. natans Vejd. sensu Jakobi and showed that this new species justified the erection of a new subgenus (Antrobathynella) of Bathynella. Study of the morphology of the mandible, and the 8th pereiopod of the male and female, and examination of the chaetotaxy of the uropods have revealed new diagnostic characters which permit the unequivocal separation of B. natans and B. stammeri. A diagnosis of both species is given. The present study is the result of examination of numerous specimens from many …
