Impact Of Cooling Towers On Bird Migration, Edward J. Rybak, William B. Jackson, Stephen H. Vessey Oct 1973

Impact Of Cooling Towers On Bird Migration, Edward J. Rybak, William B. Jackson, Stephen H. Vessey

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Construction of the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station on the SE shore of Lake Erie near Port Clinton, Ohio brings a massive, natural draft cooling tower (495 ft. high and 410 ft. wide at base) into migration pathways. Preoperational observations were undertaken to determine whether conditions existed under which the station structures intercepted migrating birds. Preliminary observations were made at the site (Fig. 1) in the fall of 1972 and intensified during the spring and fall migrations of 1973. Construction on the shell of the cooling tower was not completed until late in 1972; thus the full height had not been …

The Monk Parakeet And New Jersey Agriculture, Charles A. Wagg Oct 1973

The Monk Parakeet And New Jersey Agriculture, Charles A. Wagg

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Parrots and parakeets have been brought into the United States for as long as our sailors have sailed to the distant tropics. In more recent years, the keeping of exotic pets increased to almost fad proportions. The pet shops and importers have kept the United States supplied with a vast array of these species. Among them is the Monk Parakeet. Large numbers of Monk Parakeets have been imported to satisfy the demand for parrot-like birds. The largest percentage of these birds went to pet stores and ultimately ended up in homes as pets. Unfortunately, some of these birds were released …

Epa Registration And Licensing, Len P. Quattrochi, John R. Beck Oct 1973

Epa Registration And Licensing, Len P. Quattrochi, John R. Beck

Bird Control Seminars Proceedings

Originally we had the old Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) which involved Health, Education and Welfare, Interior, Food and Drug Administration but was administered by USDA. This has been changed by the passage of the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act (FEPCA). Now in certain cases you will find that EPA is working through the States under the FEPCA law to develop policy. You will find EPA and the amended FIFRA will play a very important role in your business for several years.

On A Boundary Value Problem For A Class Of Differential Equations With A Deviating Argument, V. Lakshmikantham, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

Recently, J. Chandra [1] obtained comparison estimates for differential equations with deviating argument (1) [see pdf for notation] on the interval I: to [see pdf for notation] , where [see pdf for notation] is a given continuous function defined on a suitable interval (containing I ), together with the boundary conditions (2) [see pdf for notation] for [see pdf for notation] The class of BVP (1) - (2) is incorporated in a larger class discussed in [3]. The introduction in [1] of a maximal solution has furnished comparison results and an iterative procedure for obtaining solutions. The use of the …

Comparison Principle And Non Linear Contract In Abstract Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, Jerome Eisenfeld Oct 1973

Comparison Principle And Non Linear Contract In Abstract Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, Jerome Eisenfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

The theory of differential and integral equations exploits comparison and iterative techniques which do not fall under the Contractive Mapping Principle. For they make use of partial orderings and maximal solutions; concepts which have no significance in a metric space. These methods take their proper place in the theory of cones [1], [2]. In this paper, Banach's Contraction Mapping Principle and comparison and iterative methods are brought together under a single roof which houses various results from the theory of differential equations [3], in addition to an interesting generalization of Banach's Theorem [4]. One 'It thus led, in a natural …

Synthesis Of Some N2-Alkyl- And Dialkylsubstituted 2'-Deozyguanosines, Carl D. Carter Sep 1973

Synthesis Of Some N2-Alkyl- And Dialkylsubstituted 2'-Deozyguanosines, Carl D. Carter

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Various N2-alkyl- and dialkylsubstituted 2’-deoxyguanosines have been synthesized. After future conversion into nucleotides, these compounds are to be used for incorporation into DNA. The modified DNA is expected to be useful in complexing studies with actinomycin. The presence of the 2-amino group in a purine has earlier been shown to be required for binding of actinomycin. Possible reasons for this requirement are an electronic effect or a precise steric fit involving hydrogen bonding. By comparing the relative stability of the complex formed between actinomycin and modified DNA versus actinomycin and normal DNA a better understanding of the mechanism …

The Synthesis And Reactivity Of Pyrrolopyridazines, Phillip Dan Cook Sep 1973

The Synthesis And Reactivity Of Pyrrolopyridazines, Phillip Dan Cook

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A new general synthetic sequence and cyclization method was developed which utilizes parts of both the Reissert and Madelung indole cyclization methods and leads to substituted pyrrolo[2,3-d]pyridazines,pyrrolo[3,2-c]-pyridazines, and pyrrolo[2,3-c]pyridazines. Thus, ethyl pyridazinylpyruvatel-oxides substituted with an ethyl formimidate or acetimidate group adjacent to the pyruvate group provides immediate precursors to pyrrolopyridazines. Mild acid hydrolysis of the acylimidate and subsequent cyclodehydration. Parallel to the latter stage of the Reissert indole cyclization method, affords ethyl pyrrolopyridazine carboxylates in high yields. On the other hand, treatment of the acylimidates with base provided ethyl pyrrolopyridazine glyxalates in high yields in a manner similar to the …

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson Aug 1973

State Of Bacterial Dna After Uptake Into The Roots Of Germinating Barley Seeds, Larry Dale Lawson

Theses and Dissertations

Germinating barley seeds have been shown to take up Bacillus subtilis DNA labelled with 5-bromouracil and tritiated thymidine and retain the DNA in the root system without substantially degrading it. The percentage of bacterial DNA recovered from the total root DNA was independent of the amount of bacterial DNA available for uptake. Four observations indicated the stability of bacterial DNA after uptake into barley roots: (1) the bacterial DNA retained its transforming ability after recovery from the roots; (2) the labelled B. subtilis DNA showed similar CsCl density gradient patterns before uptake and after uptake; (3) most of the radioactivity …

The Internal Chemical Shift. A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. I. Internal Shift Correlations, Donald W. Beistel, Holger E. Chen, P. J. Fryatt Aug 1973

The Internal Chemical Shift. A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. I. Internal Shift Correlations, Donald W. Beistel, Holger E. Chen, P. J. Fryatt

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The study of proton shift behavior in nine families of disubstituted benzenes has provided quantitative correlations of internal and meta shifts among all families. The equations of correlation are useful in the prediction of shifts to an error of 0.015 ppm. The studies demonstrate shift additivity for the 4-substituted halobenzenes and suggest a chain rule relationship for substituent effects in those compounds. For that reason, previous theories of substituent interactions involving inductive and resonance contributors appear incorrect when applied to proton shift data. In decreasing order of up field shift at the ortho protons the substituents studied include N(CH3)2, NH2, …

I. An Isothermal Titration Microcalorimeter. Ii. Importance Of Micronutrients In Nutrition. Iii. Zinc Bibliography, John Willard Gardner

Theses and Dissertations

I. An isothermal titration microcalorimeter having a colume of 4 ml and capable of temerature control to ±2 x 10-5°C is described. Major components include a constant temperature water bath controlled to ±3 x 10-4°C, a platinum reation vessel, and an isothermal control circuit consisting of constant Peltier thermoelectric cooling and variable Joule heating controlled by a thermistor in an AC Wheatstone bridge circuit. The calorimeter was tested by measuring the heat of ionization of water and was found to produce data accurate to ± 0.1% where small samples are used such as in the investigation of many biological systems.

A Method Of Moments Applied To An Invariant Imbedding Solution Of A Certain Class Of Fredholm Integral Equations., Grenfell Paul Boicourt Jul 1973

A Method Of Moments Applied To An Invariant Imbedding Solution Of A Certain Class Of Fredholm Integral Equations., Grenfell Paul Boicourt

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

This dissertation first develops a method for solving the integral equation when y(z') is a constant and then extends it to the case where y(z') is a step function. The solution of the integral equation is achieved by solving the integro differential invariant imbedding equations derived from the integral equation by varying the limits of integration. The imbedding equations are solved using a moment method which reduces the calculation to an initial value problem. Proofs of the existence and convergence of the method are given. In the case where y(z') is a constant, the solution of the integral equation is …

Intensity Correlation Spectroscopy Of Heme Proteins And Motile Microorganisms, Gordon E. Banks Jul 1973

Intensity Correlation Spectroscopy Of Heme Proteins And Motile Microorganisms, Gordon E. Banks

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The recently developed technique of autocorrelation of intensity fluctuations of Rayleigh (quasi-elastically) scattered light allows measurement of some dynamic properties of particles in solution. The origin of the intensity fluctuations and the form of the correlation spectra for various situations are discussed. The apparatus and methods are described along with methods of data reduction and sources of error. Measurements were made using a Spectra-Physics Model 125 (50mW) He-Ne laser (6328Å) in conjunction with a Saicor 43A 400 channel correlation and probability analyzer. The diffusion coefficient of cyanometmyoglobin was found to be D20, w = (9.47 ± 0.28) x 10 …

Line Critical Point Determining And Point Distinguishing Graphs.Geodetic Orientations Of Complete K-Partite Graphs., Larry Dean Gassman Jul 1973

Line Critical Point Determining And Point Distinguishing Graphs.Geodetic Orientations Of Complete K-Partite Graphs., Larry Dean Gassman

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

I. Sumner defined a graph to be point determining if and only if distinct points have distinct neighborhoods and he has characterized connected line-critical point determining graphs. Here a short alternate proof of his characterization is provided and arbitrary line-critical point determining graphs are then characterized. Next line-critical point distinguishing graphs are considered; a graph is point distinguishing if and only if it is the complement of a point determining graph. Finally line-critical graphs that are both point determining and point distinguishing are characterized.

II. Ore defined a graph to be geodetic if and only if there is a unique …

Estimation Of Probability Functions Using Splines., Douglas Wade Hill Jul 1973

Estimation Of Probability Functions Using Splines., Douglas Wade Hill

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this paper, three classes of spline functions are applied to the problem of estimating probability distribution and density functions. In each case, it is shown that the spline function approximating the sample cumulative distribution function converges almost surely to the unknown distribution, F, given that F has at least two continuous derivatives. If F has three or more continuous derivatives, the derivative of the spline converges to the density function. For polynomial splines of sufficiently high degree if F has k continuous derivative, the rate of convergence for the j-th derivative is shown to be 0(hk-j-1/2) where h is …

Remote Sensing Of Earth Resources System Capabilities V.S. Design Constraints, William Howard Grisham Jul 1973

Remote Sensing Of Earth Resources System Capabilities V.S. Design Constraints, William Howard Grisham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

There is new evidence that global earth resources satellite net will be practical. This paper weighs recent advances in remote sensing to pinpoint the dominant constraints. The data and sensor systems interfacing requirements are critically reviewed. It is shown that conventional optics constraints can be relaxed, with the newer systems, based on multi-spectral imagery and statistical processing methods. The most powerful computational methods use algorithms based on a Gaussian assumption for the species vector in feature space, but biases in the imagery limit their efficiency. A rationale is proposed: improving the observational network calibrating efficiency will also improve the photogrammetric …

A Method Of Analyzing Mandibular Movement, Richard B. Mccoy Jun 1973

A Method Of Analyzing Mandibular Movement, Richard B. Mccoy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Mandibular movement is considered to be a fundamental factor in the study, analysis, and treatment of occlusion. For many years, dentists have realized that dental health depends upon the compatibility of mandibular movements and occlusion. This realization has led to the development of new methods and techniques for recording accurately and scientifically the movements of the mandible. In order for this data to be of scientific value, it must be stored in a usable form which is easily available for analysis.

The purpose of this research project was to develop a procedure for storing and recalling mandibular-movement information. Before such …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to determine if the use of a repressive-inspirational discussion group has significance in changing the level of self-esteem of institutionalized essentially normal elderly individuals.

A review of literature indicates the need for a group method that can help in developing and maintaining self-esteem in the elderly. Different studies reveal the need for self-esteem in the aged. The development of self-esteem is necessary so that elderly individuals can cope with situations in daily living and maintain physical and mental health.

An experimental method was utilized in conducting this study. A sample of twenty elderly individuals was selected …

Selected Physiological Responses To A Back Rub, Norma (Ewing) Anderson Jun 1973

Selected Physiological Responses To A Back Rub, Norma (Ewing) Anderson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The back rub, which has been an established part of evening patient care for many years, is given to promote relaxation and sleep as well as to promote skin care. Yet its place in modern nursing seems questionable. Today's nurse is less willing to practice using empirically established procedures.

There have been few investigations showing the effect of massage to the back and no studies have shown that a brief back rub, as given by nurses, promotes relaxation. In cardiovascular nursing there is some controversy as to whether or not the back rub causes stimulation to the cardiovascular system that …

The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya Jun 1973

The Theoretical Distribution Of Forces In The Rigid Component Of The Buccal Arch Positioner, Dennis H. Teruya

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The distribution of an applied force to the rigid component of the Buccal Arch Positioner was determined with a theoretically formulated model. The rigid component was assumed to be a free body without the semi-rigid attachments and was evaluated at four points for the force distribution. The summation of the forces and the moments were equated to zero and were utilized to derive equations to solve for the unknown forces. The unknown forces at each point of the rigid component were solved for in terms of the given force applications.

A laterally directed force application at one of the posterior …

Dissertations and Theses

The author has sampled the recent bottom sediments in Tillamook Bay, Oregon. Sediment distribution is assessed in relation to sediment source areas and related to sedimentary environments. Particular attention was directed to the precision with which granulometric data can be stated. It was found that variance is quite high for granulometric parameters of the bay sediments.

Sediment distribution using different measures are displayed on charts of the bay. Size distributions of sediments at any given location are examined for geologic significance. Plotting of size distribution on graph paper using probability ordinate is shown to increase the ease of geologic interpretation. …

Solution Diffusion Coefficients -- New And Improved Methods For Their Determination, Newton C. Fawcett May 1973

Solution Diffusion Coefficients -- New And Improved Methods For Their Determination, Newton C. Fawcett

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The previously existing method of determining diffusion coefficients (D values) by diffusion from capillaries is critically reviewed. A differential error analysis of the method is given, and a formula is derived for the upper error bound on D as a function of capillary length, time span of the experiment, and ratio of final to initial diffusant concentrations. It is concluded that when the initial concentration and capillary length are not corrected for convective loss of diffusant solution from the capillary, the errors in concentration and length are additive and can significantly affect the accuracy of D. A new method (the …

A Tectonic Study Of A Part Of The Northern Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, Northeastern Oregon, Kenneth Gordon Neal May 1973

A Tectonic Study Of A Part Of The Northern Eagle Cap Wilderness Area, Northeastern Oregon, Kenneth Gordon Neal

Dissertations and Theses

Upper Triassic metavolcanic and metasedimentary strata in the study area are intruded by the Hurricane Divide and Craig Mountain Plutons of the Late Jurassic-Cretaceous Wallowa Batholith. The Clover Creek Greenstone is overlain by the Martin Bridge Limestone, which is in tum overlain by the Hurwal Argillite; although the sequence is in normal stratigraphic order, contacts are generally tectonic. Concurrent with Early-Middle Jurassic regional deformation, during intermediate to mafic dikes, emplacement of the plutons of the Wallowa Batholith began. The plutons intruded vertically through the greenstone and limestone and then horizontally above the greenstone. This resulted in intense penetrative plastic deformation …

A Test Of The Non-Uniform Distribution Of Azimuths Of Overlapping Lunar Craters, John Richard Dickson May 1973

A Test Of The Non-Uniform Distribution Of Azimuths Of Overlapping Lunar Craters, John Richard Dickson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The azimuths between the centers of overlapping lunar craters show a statistically strong preferred orientation over most of the lunar globe for those crater pairs where the younger crater is of relatively small diameter (10-25 km). A strong north-south preferred lineation also exists in a narrow belt along the east and northern limb of the full moon for those crater pairs involving relatively large diameter craters (45 km). Various endogenic and exogenic mechanisms which might create a preferred orientation of overlapping craters are considered in the light of these findings. The preferred orientation of the smaller craters could result from …
