Comment On ''Inelastic Scattering In Atom-Diatomic Molecule Collisions. I. Rotational Transitions In The Sudden Approximation'', Russell T. Pack

Faculty Publications

It is argued that conflicting approximations in a recent paper [J. R. Stallcop, J. Chem. Phys. 61, 5085 (1974)] render the resulting theory invalid.

A Class Of Functional Equations And Mielnik Probability Spaces, S. J. Guccione, Caslav V. Stanojevic Jan 1976

A Class Of Functional Equations And Mielnik Probability Spaces, S. J. Guccione, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let S be the unit sphere of a normed real linear space N and let (S, p) be a Mielnik space of dimension two. For p(x, y) = f(‖x+y‖), x, yєS, where /is a continuous, strictly increasing function from [0, 2] onto [0, 1], it has been shown that (S, p) being two dimensional is equivalent to N being an inner product space. In some polarization problems modeled on the unit sphere of an inner product space, the transition probability p(x, y) may not be as well behaved as p(x, y) = f(‖x + y‖). In order to provide a …

On L¹ Convergence Of Certain Cosine Sums, John W. Garrett, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is shown that to a certain cosine series f, a Rees-Stanojević cosine sumn can be associated such that gn converges to f pointwise, and a necessary and sufficient condition for L1 convergence of gn to f is given. As a corollary to that result we have a generalization of the classical result of this kind. Other corollaries are given concerning the well-known integrability conditions. © 1975, American Mathematical Society.

On L¹ Convergence Of Certain Cosine Sums, John W. Garrett, Caslav V. Stanojevic

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rees and Stanojevic introduced a new class of modified cosine sums (equation omitted) and found a necessary and sufficient condition for integrability of these modified cosine sums. Here we show that to every classical cosine series f with coefficients of bounded variation, a Rees-Stanqjevic cosine sum gn can be associated such that gn converges to f pointwise, and a necessary and sufficient condition for Lx convergence of gn to f is given. As a corollary to that result we have a generalization of the classical result of this kind. Examples are given using the well-known integrability conditions. © 1976 American …

The Definition Of Programming Languages, J. A. Robinson Jan 1976

The Definition Of Programming Languages, J. A. Robinson

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - Technical Reports

There is no need to argue in favor of concise, clear, complete, consistent, descriptions of programming languages, nor to recite the cost in time, energy, money, and effectiveness which is incurred when a description falls short of these standards. Reliable, high-quality computer programming is impossible without a clear and precise understanding of the language in which the programs are written—this being true quite independently of the merits of a language as a language. In this study we tried to discover the current state of the methodology of definition of programming languages. We sought to separate the question (as far as …

The Extremal Structure Of Locally Compact Convex Sets, J. C. Hankins, Roy M. Rakestraw Jan 1976

The Extremal Structure Of Locally Compact Convex Sets, J. C. Hankins, Roy M. Rakestraw

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let X be a locally compact closed convex subset of a locally convex Hausdorff topological linear space E. Then every exposed point of X is strongly exposed. The definitions of denting (strongly extreme) ray and strongly exposed ray are given for convex subsets of E. If X does not contain a line, then every extreme ray is strongly extreme and every exposed ray is strongly exposed. An example is given to show that the hypothesis that X be locally compact is necessary in both cases. © 1976 Pacific Journal of Mathematics. All rights reserved.

Iron Dynamics In A Gas-Water-Sediment Microcosm, Peter A. Cowan, V. Dean Adams, Donald B. Porcella Jan 1976

Iron Dynamics In A Gas-Water-Sediment Microcosm, Peter A. Cowan, V. Dean Adams, Donald B. Porcella

Reports

Iron dynamics in eutrophic systems were studied in the laboratory utilizing gas-water-Sediment phase sealed microcosms. Sediments from Hyrum Reservoir (2.4 percent iron by weight) were placed in the dark to simulate the hypolimnetic regions of a eutrophic impoundment. Iron both chemically and physically was readily available to microorganisms of the aqueous phase because iron in these systems was soluble. In the light microcosms, which simulated shallow littoral regions of eutrophic impoundments, iron was found in higher aqueous phase concentrations than was predicted chemically and physically; this was rationalized through biological mechanisms. The experiment was conducted in two phases: Phase I …

Polymerization Of Amino Acids On Kaolinite, Z. Badri Adnani-Gleason Jan 1976

Polymerization Of Amino Acids On Kaolinite, Z. Badri Adnani-Gleason

Dissertations and Theses

In the origin of life on the primitive earth a major step must have involved the condensation of amino acids to form the first polypeptides. Several suggestions as to how this might have occurred have been made by other workers. One of the more appealing proposals is that the polymerization was catalyzed by clay minerals. It has been reported, for example, that L-apartic acid polymerizes significantly faster than D-aspartic in the presence of kaolinite in aqueous suspension at 90˚. In this work an attempt was made to repeat this report and extend the pH range to include values presumably present …

The Extendability And Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Stephen R. Bernfeld Jan 1976

The Extendability And Uniqueness Of Solutions Of Ordinary Differential Equations, Stephen R. Bernfeld

Mathematics Technical Papers - Archive

In a recent paper [1] the author obtained results on the extendability of solutions of perturbed differential equations. The question of the extendability of solutions of differential equations is a fundamental and important property since questions of stability and boundedness require extendability. In this paper we continue our study of extendability of perturbed scalar differential equations. Our somewhat surprising results also extend to the question of uniqueness of the zero solution of perturbed equations satisfying an Osgood condition [4] (See also [2] for recent results on the uniqueness of perturbed systems.) Examples are provided to demonstrate the strength of our …

The thesis area is located in Colorado along the east flank of the southernmost Mosquito Range, bounded by Buffalo Peaks Volcanic field on the north and Trout Creek on the south. Units mapped include the Sawatch Quartzite (Cambrian), Manitou Limestone (lower Ordovician), Harding Sandstone (middle Ordovician), Fremont Limestone (upper Ordovician), Parting Quartzite (Devonian), Dyer Dolomite (Devonian), and Leadville Limestone (Mississippian). The Leadville …

On Estimating Functionals Of Probability Densities And Applications To Parameter Estimation, Dolores Marie Halper Tichenor Jan 1976

On Estimating Functionals Of Probability Densities And Applications To Parameter Estimation, Dolores Marie Halper Tichenor

Doctoral Dissertations

"Estimating the reciprocal of a scale parameter by means of frequency moments is investigated. An investigation of the bias and mean squared error is carried out and practical methods for implementing the method of frequency moments in the case of the Cauchy distribution are considered. A two-step estimation procedure is proposed, and a comparison of a one-step and two-step procedure is made. Uniform and normal distributions are considered as prior distributions for the interval width in the frequency moments method and mean squared error is tabulated.

A method to estimate I lxl j f k (x) dx is proposed where …

Hydrologische Und Chemische Untersuchungen An Den Fließgewässern Des Schlitzerlandes. A. Quellen. I. Übersicht, Jörg Brehm

International Journal of Speleology

In a Triassic sandstone woodland (Schlitzerland in Hesse, Western Germany) 17 springs were hydrologically and hydrochemically investigated throughout one year (April 1973 - April 1974). Measurements were carried out on water volume, temperature, electrolytical conductivity, pH, aikalinity, chlorinity, dissolved molecular oxygen, dissolved organic material (COD), ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and free phosphate. Among the hydrochemical factors investigated the pH-value was closely related especially to the micro-climate in the spring drainage area. In particular the pH rose both with increasing length of the drainage area and — within the same spring with decreasing water supply. On the other hand the pH-value diminished …

Remarques Sur L'Aselle Psammique Proasellus Walteri (Chappuis, 1948) (Crustacea, Isopoda, Asellota), Jean-Paul Henry

International Journal of Speleology

P. walteri, an eyeless species of tiny size and thin body, shows numerous original characters. By its general morphology, it is one form of Asellid best adapted to the phreatic waters where it exists in large settlements. It is also able to live in the psammic biotope in a manner similar to Microparasellids. The females lay only 6 to 10 normal sized eggs. There is no indication of oostegits outside the breeding period. In some populations, the small number of eggs, correlated with the small size, seems to be compensated by a sex-ratio favorable so the females.

Studies On Subterranean Drift Of Stygobiont Crustaceans (Niphargus, Crangonyx, Graeteriella), Siegfried Husmann Jan 1976

Studies On Subterranean Drift Of Stygobiont Crustaceans (Niphargus, Crangonyx, Graeteriella), Siegfried Husmann

International Journal of Speleology

In two groundwater canals of a water work in West Germany the drift of stygobiont groundwater organisms was investigated. The collections were made at two-hour intervals. Niphargus aquilex Schiodte, Crangonyx subterraneus Bate and Graeteriella unisetigera (Graeter) were considered more closely, because they were caught in greater numbers than other organisms. These stygobionts show no sign of dial periodicity.

Quelques Données Sur La Population De Proasellus Slavus Ssp. N. Sket (Crustacea, Isopoda) Dans L'Hyporhéique De La Rivière Drave Près De Legrad, Romana Lattinger-Penko

International Journal of Speleology

An analysis of the population in the hyporheic medium of the Drava river shows that Proasellus slavus ssp. n. is one of the smallest known Asellids. It is living in an interstitial biotope as a permanent population in which density varies in space and time. Our observations show that reproduction takes place throughout the year, however with a maximum rate at the beginning of summer. Females may produce a relatively great number of offspring, notwithstanding the smallness of the species.

Remarques Sur La Biologie Et L'Écologie De Stenasellus Virei Dollfus (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota Des Eaux Souterraines), Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Recent observations indicate that a laying season seems to exist, in karstic as well as in phreatic populations. Nevertheless, a single female cannot lay each year, because the reproductive intermolt averages 15-16 months and is always followed by one (9-10 months) or several non-reproductive intermolts. So, the minimum laying rhythm of female St. virei is biennial. The cavernicolous population (St. v. virei) of the Padirac swallow-hole is not a relict, but a colony separated from the main settlement of the alluvial waters of the Dordogne river. On the contrary, it is possible to find, close to each other, …

Untersuchungen Zur Funktion Des Mesopsammon Bei Der Reinigung Von Infiltriertem Oberflächenwasser, Barbara Ritterbusch Jan 1976

Untersuchungen Zur Funktion Des Mesopsammon Bei Der Reinigung Von Infiltriertem Oberflächenwasser, Barbara Ritterbusch

International Journal of Speleology

Based upon the hypothesis that the Metazoa (nematoda and rotifera) in the interstitial stratum of a slow sand filter are of importance in the process of purification of surface water, a filter was built to check the substrate characteristics of different grain sizes compared with the natural soil. It was found that the granulometric composition of sands as found in the settling basins did have the best comparative screening properties. This was demonstrated by chemical analyses of NH4, NO2, NO3, PO4, KMnO4-consumption and O2-saturation. Only the NO3 …

The Karst Of Transvaal (South Africa), J. Martini, I. Kavalieris Jan 1976

The Karst Of Transvaal (South Africa), J. Martini, I. Kavalieris

International Journal of Speleology

The Transvaal Karst is a world important example of a Karst developed on a very old dolomite. Its unique character is due to the composition of the rock and history of development. The dissolution of the dolomite is interesting and has an important effect on the character of the caves developed. The caves preserved in this area include the longest known in South Africa and are perhaps among the largest dolomite systems known in the world. They are very old and in some cases contain important palaeontological deposits (Australopithecine fauna). The caves to various degrees are in a state of …

International Journal of Speleology

Following 8 months of observations in a richly populated cave, (Grotte de la Scierie, HauteSavoie, France), it has been possible to outline the movements and distribution of Meta menardi (Araneae), Nelima aurantiaca (Opiliones), Triphosa dubitata and Triphosa sabaudiata (Lepidoptera) and Culex pipiens (Diptera) within the cave ecosystem. Although no general rule can be postulated it appears that the morphology of the cave walls and the climatic conditions regulate the distribution of these 5 species within the cave ecosystem. The interactions between the 5 species have been investigated.

The Effect Of Cave Entrances On The Distribution Of Cave-Inhabiting Terrestrial Arthropods, Stewart B. Peck Jan 1976

The Effect Of Cave Entrances On The Distribution Of Cave-Inhabiting Terrestrial Arthropods, Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

Populations of cave invertebrates are generally considered to be food-limited. The cave entrance is a major source of food input into the community in the form of decaying organic matter. Thus, the densities of scavenging terrestrial cave invertebrates should be related to the distance from the cave entrance because this represents a measure of food abundance. A test showed this expectation to be true in Crossings Cave, Alabama. A population density peak occurred 10 m inside the cave where the dark zone and detritus infall regions meet. The greatest population peak occurred at 100 m where densities of crickets and …

The Effects Of Boating Upon Lead Concentrations In Fish, David Oates Jan 1976

The Effects Of Boating Upon Lead Concentrations In Fish, David Oates

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

The concentration of lead in fish muscle tissue from lakes where boating is heavy and where it is prohibited was measured. The lead levels ranged from less than 0.05 to 1.35 ppm but did not differ significantly between those in the controlled and non-controlled boating lakes. Lead levels apparently pose no public health hazard.

Part I. Thermodynamic Acidities Of Substituted Phenylacetylenes. Part Ii. Mercury Accumulation In Trout Of Southern Missouri, Eric T. Lloyd

Masters Theses

"PART I: THERMODYNAMIC ACIDITIES OF SUBSTITUTED PHENYLACETYLENES The thermodynamic acidities (pKa) of phenylacetylene and several para substituted phenylacetylenes in methanol were determined at 25ºC. These acidity constants were determined using a quenching technique which involves converting the phenylacetylenic anion, present at equilibrium as sodium phenylacetylide, to the tritium labelled carbon acid. By liquid scintillation counting techniques, the concentration of the anion was determined and the pKa of the phenylacetylene compound calculated. The resulting pKa's are: p-nitrophenylacetylene, 17.98, p-bromophenylacetylene, 18.10, p-fluorophenylacetylene, 18.14, phenylacetylene, 18.50, and p-methylphenylacetylene, 18.60. The effect of a substituent in the para position on the relative acidities is …
