This study investigates the educational potential of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) platforms based on large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, as tools for studentcentred learning. Recognizing the current limitations of GenAI, particularly its propensity for generating inaccurate or misleading information—the paper proposes a novel instructional strategy: an interdisciplinary laboratory designed to foster critical evaluation of GenAI-generated outputs. In this pedagogical model, students engage with GenAI systems by posing questions or solving problems drawn from topics they have already studied and understand. Equipped with correct answers, students are positioned to assess the accuracy and relevance of AI-generated …

Learning Spatio-Temporal Dynamics For Trajectory Recovery Via Time-Aware Transformer, Tian Sun, Yuqi Chen, Baihua Zheng, Weiwei Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In real-world applications, GPS trajectories often suffer from low sampling rates, with large and irregular intervals between consecutive GPS points. This sparse characteristic presents challenges for their direct use in GPS-based systems. This paper addresses the task of map-constrained trajectory recovery, aiming to enhance trajectory sampling rates of GPS trajectories. Previous studies commonly adopt a sequence-to-sequence framework, where an encoder captures the trajectory patterns and a decoder reconstructs the target trajectory. Within this framework, effectively representing the road network and extracting relevant trajectory features are crucial for overall performance. Despite advancements in these models, they fail to fully leverage the …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Large Language Models (LLMs) have recently shown remarkable capabilities in various software engineering tasks, spurring the rapid growth of the Large Language Models for Software Engineering (LLM4SE) area. However, limited attention has been paid to developing efficient LLM4SE techniques that demand minimal computational cost, time, and memory resources, as well as green LLM4SE solutions that reduce energy consumption, water usage, and carbon emissions. This article aims to redirect the focus of the research community toward the efficiency and greenness of LLM4SE, while also sharing potential research directions to achieve this goal. It commences with a brief overview of the significance …

Enhancing Vulnerability Detection Via Inter-Procedural Semantic Completion, Bozhi Wu, Chengjie Liu, Zhiming Li, Yushi Cao, Jun Sun, Shang-Wei Lin
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Inspired by advances in deep learning, numerous learning-based approaches for vulnerability detection have emerged, primarily operating at the function level for scalability. However, this design choice has a critical limitation: many vulnerabilities span multiple functions, causing function-level approaches to lose the semantics of called functions and fail to capture true vulnerability patterns. To address this issue, we propose VulnSC, a novel framework designed to enhance learning-based approaches by complementing inter-procedural semantics. VulnSC retrieves the source code of called functions for datasets and leverages large language models (LLMs) with well-designed prompts to generate summaries for these functions. The datasets, enhanced with …

Despite the growing promise of artificial intelligence (AI) in supporting decision-making across domains, fostering appropriate human reliance on AI remains a critical challenge. In this paper, we investigate the utility of exploring distance-based uncertainty scores for task delegation to AI and describe how these scores can be visualized through embedding representations for human-AI decision-making. After developing an AI-based system for physical stroke rehabilitation assessment, we conducted a study with 19 health professionals and 10 students in medicine/health to understand the effect of exploring distance-based uncertainty scores on users’ reliance on AI. Our findings showed that distance-based uncertainty scores outperformed traditional …

Sla Evaluation And Composition In Reconfigurable Cloud-Based Services, Michael Iannelli
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Given the business model of offering data and computing services in a cloud setting, a major question arises: How do the services of one cloud provider compare to those of others? With the ubiquitous use of smartphones and tablets, the ability of a cloud provider to support QoS and client mobility becomes paramount. This research proposes a methodology for evaluating service-level agreements (SLAs) between cloud providers and their consumers, with a particular focus on dynamic SLA composition to adapt to changes in the application requirements and the external environment—such as traffic surges, security threats, or evolving business models.

A Novel Closed Monoidal Structure On The Nucleus Of A Profunctor, Samantha K. Jarvis
A Novel Closed Monoidal Structure On The Nucleus Of A Profunctor, Samantha K. Jarvis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We describe a novel closed monoidal structure on the nucleus of a profunctor enriched over a posetal category, a distinguished subcategory of the category of presheaves given by the invariant part of an adjunction induced by the profunctor. Our structure is motivated by a connection to a notion of type given by orthogonality. For specific examples, we consider the two-element enriching category {0,1} and the reals.
A Toda Bracket Convergence Theorem For Multiplicative Spectral Sequences, Eva Belmont
A Toda Bracket Convergence Theorem For Multiplicative Spectral Sequences, Eva Belmont
Faculty Scholarship
Moss’ theorem, which relates Massey products in the -page of the classical Adams spectral sequence to Toda brackets of homotopy groups, is one of the main tools for calculating Adams differentials. Working in an arbitrary symmetric monoidal stable simplicial model category, we prove a general version of Moss’ theorem which applies to spectral sequences that arise from filtrations compatible with the monoidal structure. This involves the study of Massey products and Toda brackets in a non-strictly associative context. The theorem has broad applications, e.g., to the computation of the motivic slice spectral sequence and other colocalization towers.

Maximizing Edge Connectivity In Graph Partitioning Using Hotspots, Isam A. Alobaidi, Hiba G. Fareed, Jennifer L. Leopold, Andrea E. Smith
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Graphs have long been used to model relationships between entities. For some applications, a single graph is sufficient; for other problems, a collection of graphs may be more appropriate to represent the underlying data. Many contemporary problem domains, for which graphs are an ideal data model, contain an enormous amount of data (e.g., social networks). Hence, researchers frequently employ parallelized or distributed processing. The graph data must first be partitioned and assigned to the multiple processors in a way that the workload is balanced and inter-processor communication is minimized. The latter problem may be complicated by the existence of edges …
Indigenous Science And The Legacy Of Fire: Resilience, Fuels, Mosaics, And Eco-Cultural Landscapes In Oregon’S Coastal And Cascade Range, Julia Alcalá
University Honors Theses
Most of Oregon's western Cascade and Coastal range is a landscape that has historically been considered devoid of mid to low-intensity fires by Western science. However, for time immemorial, Indigenous peoples have been stewarding the forests through the use of "good fire," creating diverse and heterogenous landscapes with mixed fire regimes, ranging from less than a decade to several centuries since the last fire, resulting in a mosaic of patchy forest, oak savannas, prairies, and wetlands. Yet centuries of Indigenous displacement, cultural assimilation, and suppression of cultural burning contributed to this prevailing belief. Despite that, in recent decades, Western scientists …

Rebuilding Consent: Fear, Trust, And The Future Of Nuclear Energy, Austin Dunham
Rebuilding Consent: Fear, Trust, And The Future Of Nuclear Energy, Austin Dunham
University Honors Theses
This thesis traces the cultural and emotional roots of nuclear fear in the United States and explores how those inherited anxieties continue to shape public resistance to nuclear energy in the face of a worsening climate crisis. Drawing on personal narrative, risk perception theory, and the history of nuclear discourse - from Hiroshima to Chernobyl to today - the research examines how trust, rather than technology, remains the largest barrier to progress. By analyzing the stories we tell about energy, disaster, control, and overall perceived risk, this work asks what it would take for Americans to imagine nuclear energy not …
Raising The Roof For All: Integrating Companion Planting Ecology, Policy And Community In Portland's Green Roof Future, Zoe Edelman
University Honors Theses
Green roofs, or ecoroofs, provide environmental and social benefits in urban areas. Ecoroofs manage stormwater by absorbing rainfall, reducing rooftop temperatures, supporting pollinators, and offering green space in densely developed cities. Portland, Oregon has adopted progressive policies that encourage green roof installation through incentives and building requirements. However, many ecoroofs in the city are underperforming due to poor maintenance, low public awareness, and limited access to rooftop spaces. This thesis explores whether companion planting can improve the ecological performance and long- term viability of extensive green roofs. A rooftop experiment at Portland State University tested the growth of radishes, with …
Early-Stage Detection Of Copper Ion Release From Bronze Corrosion Using Uv/Vis Spectroscopy And Hydrogel Sensing, Hibah Khan
University Honors Theses
Detecting copper(I) (Cu⁺) release at early corrosion stages is important for preserving bronze heritage materials. This study investigated the use of neocuproine (NC), a Cu⁺-specific ligand, for simple and selective colorimetric detection of Cu⁺ in solution. NC reacts with Cu⁺ to form a Cu(NC)₂ complex, which produces a distinct orange-red color with peak absorbance at 455 nm. Solutions were prepared with varying concentrations of Cu⁺ generated by reducing Cu²⁺ with excess ascorbic acid. Ultraviolet/Visible (UV/Vis) spectroscopy was used to quantify absorbance changes. The absorbance at 455 nm increased linearly across the tested Cu⁺ concentration range (6.25–200 µM) with an R² …

On Lexicographic Proof Rules For Probabilistic Termination, Krishnendu Chatterjee, Ehsan Kafshdar Goharshady, Petr Novotný, Jiří Zárevucký, Dorde Zikelic
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We consider the almost-sure (a.s.) termination problem for probabilistic programs, which are a stochastic extension of classical imperative programs. Lexicographic ranking functions provide a sound and practical approach for termination of non-probabilistic programs, and their extension to probabilistic programs is achieved via lexicographic ranking supermartingales (LexRSMs). However, LexRSMs introduced in the previous work have a limitation that impedes their automation: all of their components have to be non-negative in all reachable states. This might result in a LexRSM not existing even for simple terminating programs. Our contributions are twofold. First, we introduce a generalization of LexRSMs that allows for some …

Runtime Backdoor Detection For Federated Learning Via Representational Dissimilarity Analysis, Xiyue Zhang, Xiaoyong Xue, Xiaoning Du, Xiaofei Xie, Yang Liu, Meng Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Federated learning (FL), as a powerful learning paradigm, trains a shared model by aggregating model updates from distributed clients. However, the decoupling of model learning from local data makes FL highly vulnerable to backdoor attacks, where a single compromised client can poison the shared model. While recent progress has been made in backdoor detection, existing methods face challenges with detection accuracy and runtime effectiveness, particularly when dealing with complex model architectures. In this work, we propose a novel approach to detecting malicious clients in an accurate, stable, and efficient manner. Our method utilizes a sampling-based network representation method to quantify …

Nexusgs: Sparse View Synthesis With Epipolar Depth Priors In 3d Gaussian Splatting, Yulong Zheng, Zicheng Jiang, Shengfeng He, Yandu Sun, Junyu Dong, Huaidong Zhang, Yong Du
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have noticeably advanced photo-realistic novel view synthesis using images from densely spaced camera viewpoints. However, these methods struggle in few-shot scenarios due to limited supervision. In this paper, we present NexusGS, a 3DGS-based approach that enhances novel view synthesis from sparse-view images by directly embedding depth information into point clouds, without relying on complex manual regularizations. Exploiting the inherent epipolar geometry of 3DGS, our method introduces a novel point cloud densification strategy that initializes 3DGS with a dense point cloud, reducing randomness in point placement while preventing over-smoothing and overfitting. Specifically, …

Irhunter: Universal Detection Of Instruction Reordering Vulnerabilities For Enhanced Concurrency In Distributed And Parallel Systems, Guohua Xin, Guangquan Xu, Yao Zhang, Cheng Wen, Cen Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Neal N. Xiong, Shaoying Liu, Pan Gao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Instruction reordering is an essential optimization technique used in both compilers and multi-core processors to enhance parallelism and resource utilization. Although the original intent of this technique is to benefit the program, some improper reordering can significantly impact the program correctness, which we call instruction reordering vulnerability (IRV). However, existing methods detect IRV by defining CPU instruction reordering rules to schedule execution paths while neglecting compiler reordering, and thus generate false positives that require manual filtering and resulting in inefficiency. To bridge this gap, in this paper, we propose the IRV detection method, , which analyzes IRV characteristics and extracts …
Outperforming The Best With Minimal Effort: Algorithm Selection For Constrained Multi-Objective Optimization, Mustafa Misir, Aldy Gunawan
Outperforming The Best With Minimal Effort: Algorithm Selection For Constrained Multi-Objective Optimization, Mustafa Misir, Aldy Gunawan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The present study performs algorithm selection on a suite of optimization algorithms targeting the constrained multi-objective optimization problems. The idea is to utilize the existing, relevant algorithmic experience in the literature to deliver an improved solver with limited effort. The reason being that algorithm development, in general, is a challenging and time-consuming process, especially with the goal of outperforming the existing methods from varying perspectives such as performance, speed, and robustness. Concerning the multi-objective optimization problems, the required development efforts happen to be even harder than addressing the single-objective ones. Furthermore, referring to the fact that the number of candidate …

De-Duplicating Silent Compiler Bugs Via Deep Semantic Representation, Junjie Chen, Xingyu Fan, Chen Yang, Shuang Liu, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The compiler bug duplication problem (where many test failures are caused by the same compiler bug) can lead to huge waste of time and resource in diagnosing test failures produced by compiler testing. It is particularly challenging with regard to the silent compiler bugs that do not produce any error messages. To address this problem, multiple white-box techniques were proposed, but they are inapplicable in many practical scenarios. Black-box techniques are more practical, but the existing ones are less effective as they often rely on irrelevant syntactic information. To bridge this gap, we propose a novel black-box technique (BLADE), which …

Interactive Generative Modeling: A Pathway For Improved Simulation And Decision Making, Changyu Chen
Interactive Generative Modeling: A Pathway For Improved Simulation And Decision Making, Changyu Chen
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation presents Interactive Generative Modeling (IGM), a unified perspective that integrates interactive paradigm and generative modeling to advance the development of general-purpose intelligent systems. IGM is motivated by the observation that while reinforcement learning (RL) has mastered a wide range of complex simulated tasks, it struggles to generalize in high-dimensional, open-ended tasks. In contrast, generative models excel in such settings due to their expressivity and their ability to serve as powerful priors (e.g., LLMs pretrained on massive corpora). By bridging these two paradigms, IGM offers a promising path forward.
The first direction explored in this dissertation is IGM for …
Learning And Optimization Under Human-Centric Considerations, Qian Shao
Learning And Optimization Under Human-Centric Considerations, Qian Shao
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation investigates learning and optimization problems shaped by humancentric considerations, such as preferences, demonstrations, behavioral patterns, and resource constraints. As real-world decision-making increasingly involves interaction with human agents, data, and limitations, modeling these factors becomes critical for building practical, adaptive, and robust systems.
The research spans four domains. First, we study preference-aware delivery routing by learning implicit practitioner preferences and incorporating them into a hierarchical route optimization framework. Second, we develop imitation learning methods for cost-constrained settings, enabling agents to mimic expert behavior while respecting safety and resource limitations. Third,we explore early rumor detection in data-limited environments, integrating large …
