Nutrient Transport In The Lake Poinsett System, Jack M. Skille

Concentrations and loads of nutrients transported through the Lake Poinsett system were monitored from April 1, 1970 to April 1, 1971. An annual 2.07x 10~ m3 surface discharge into Lake Poinsett transported 1.66 x 104 kg (PO4) phosphorus, 1.28 x 104 kg nitrate nitrogen, and 3.90 x 104 kg organic carbon. The Big Sioux River-Dry Lake system contributed 63% of the phosphorus, 45% of the nitrate nitrogen, and 43% of the organic carbon load. The remaining portion entered Lake Poinsett from the Lake Albert drainage. Of the annual load of nutrients transported into Lake Poinsett, 33% of the nitrate nitrogen …

Benthos samples were collected in Lake Poinsett, a highly eutrophic eastern South Dakota lake, from March 1970 through February 1971. The lake bottom was divided into three substrate types (sand, sand-sapropel mixture and sapropel) and the percent of each substrate type was calculated. Nineteen macroscopic genera were taken from ten sampling stations located throughout the lake. Descriptions are presented for organisms in this group. Diversity of organisms was greatest in the sand substrates, in that all 19 genera were collected. Chironomus spp. (Chironomus plomosus, Chironomus attenuates and six unidentified species) was the most abundant group of organisms and occurred most …

Humboldt Bay is a coastal lagoon, 14 mi. long and a maximum of 4 mi. wide. The bay has three distinct segments, South, Entrance, and Arcata Bays, each of which occupies the seaward end of one or more stream valleys cut into Plio- Pleistocene paralic sediments. The segments are linked by narrow tidal channels which are bounded by a barrier spit on the west and by high valley interfluves on the east. Climate of the area is rainy temperate . Tides are of the mixed type with a mean range of 6.5 ft.

The study was conducted to explore the extent to which communication about high-risk infants identified prior to hospital discharge, influences the public health nursing supervision to these infants during the neonatal period. A high-risk infant was defined as one that stands a greater than average chance of developing neonatal, life threatening disease or sequellae (physical, intellectual, or social handicap) due usually to maternal health or social factors, infant factors such as length of gestation, birth trauma, or complications at birth. The purpose of this study was to determine whether uncooperative behavior and a quantitative measurement of depression exist in the same patient in a public health nurse's caseload. Seven full-time public health nurses were randomly selected from the San Bernardino Public Health Department staff. They reviewed their caseloads and selected all the patients who met the general criteria.

A study of different solvent systems for the atomic absorption determination of cobalt revealed that acetone results in best sensitivity. Acetone is the solvent of choice for the sensitive measurement of several metals. Hence, methods were investigated for the separation of acetone from water by salting out so that possible solvent extraction of metal chelates into this solvent could be performed. About two-thirds saturated calcium chloride proved to be the best system for salting out of the acetone. It is essentially a neutral salt and is in general a weakly complexing salt, resulting in minimum interference in solvent extractions. Solvent …

The widely-used approach for estimation of flood damages does not take into account the fact that the frequency of the annual flood peak may not be the same as the frequency of the total annual flood damages. Progressive increases in concentration of dissolved solids in the Colorado River water from Lake Powell to Imperial Dam seem to alter plankton dynamics and biological productivity of the river. Also, changes in biological productivity and micronutrients concentrations occur within the same reservoir. Development of a digital simulation model to predict micronutrients concentrations and biological productivity is necessary for diagnosing changes in plankton population and effluent-carrying capacity of the system. Results from that study indicated that poor-quality water was flowing into the Las Vegas Bay reach of Boulder Basin, Lake Mead. The thermochemical technique of static bomb calorimetry was used to determine the heats of combustion for some twenty chelated metal complexes. Studied were the first row transitional metals (Mn⁺² through Zn⁺²) bis-beta diketone complexes of acetylacetome and their related ligands and the acetyl ·· acetonates of Pd⁺², Pt⁺², Be⁺², Ce⁺³, Tl⁺¹, and Zr⁺⁴.

Several N¹-alkyl-N²-(N,N-dialkylamino)carbodiimides, which were found to form dimeric species, were prepared, and the structure of the dimeric species determined. A study of the reaction chemistry of both the monomeric and dimeric carbodiimides led to the conclusion that dimerization occurred via a (π2s + π2a) ground-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism, and that thermal decomposition of the dimeric species occurred via a (π2s +-π2s) excited-state, symmetry-allowed mechanism. Although dialkylphosphoramidates have been shown to be useful intermediates in the preparation of unsaturated organic nitrogen compounds, N-acyl- and N-imino-dialkylphosphorohydrazidates were found to be too unstable, forming trialkylphosphates upon distillation, to be of …

Crustaceans, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food items found in stomach samples. Black crappies depended on zooplankton and aquatic insects as their major food source as they occurred in all samples and were major food items in 70 percent and 40 percent respectively. Insects, zooplankton and fish were the major food items of white crappies. Insects were the dominant forage present in 54 percent of the samples while zooplankton and fish were dominant in 36 percent and 21 percent of the samples respectively. Malaria is still a world health problem. Established antimalarial drugs have become ineffective in many areas because of the emergence of resistant strains of malaria. New efforts have been initiated to study variations of new untried compounds and earlier structures shown to have activity. The 4-quinolinemethanols fall into the latter class. The great activity of the 4-quinolinemethanols is offset by their phytotoxic activity.

The possibility that substituted o(-dialkylaminomethyl-3-phenyl-1- naphthalenemethanols, as analogs of the 4-quinolinemethanols, would be effective antimalarials, yet not have the phototoxic side effect, is discussed in this paper. Precision measurements of the Debye-Waller factor of Fe⁵⁷ in Au using the wide black absorber technique have been made in the temperature range from room temperature to 830 K. The major source of error arises from Au L_y x-rays which are unresolved by the radiation detection system from the 14.4 KeV gamma ray. The K absorption edge of Br has been used to correct for the presence of x-rays.
